Issues at 9 days postop
Pescador replied to mustangchick2008's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My personal opinion is that was way too much food, dense food. I remember eating a tsp of refried beans when allowed. They tend to gas up your stomach. If you jump back into this kind of food like baked potatoes you will watch the scale creep up. Take advantage of eating little right now because it is great. A time will come when you will stop losing and gain, especially if you eat like this. I have hardly any restriction now and I am back to dieting after putting back on 30 lbs in 4 years. I eat no bread, potatoes, sweets or carbs. -
Linling - I am so there with you. I am just over 2 weeks post op and my doc said that I could start gradually adding "regular" food back into my diet and I am worried about the choices I make, too. After all, that is what my problem was before. I too think that b/c I am eating less, it is ok...perhaps it is, but I do want to make good choices, too. Hang in there, first fills are around the corner. By the way - I bought a book from Amazon.com called Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery: Over 140 Delicious Low-Fat High-Protein recipes to Enjoy in the Weeks, Months and Years After Surgery. I am hoping to find some good recipes to help me with food choices.

He tries but not all the time, if he makes french toast he'll offer me some and i give him that look, he tends to forget im trying to not eat that stuff,he's fine with the way i am but i try to tell him im not fine with the way i am ,he can eat all he wants and not really gain weight ,so it's hard for him to understand me, he does try tho sometimes, he'll want chinese food but wont get it because he feels its not fair to me, so when the weekend comes i feel like okay i can eat some unhealthy stuff and go back to eating good on monday but i always over do it..., i guess i have to learn i can still have a good time eating healthy and picking healther choices that are still good, im still trying to rearrange my process in thinking about the foods i eat,im thinking if were on the road i should probaly start packing a small lunch for myself....

One week post op and scale won't move
JoJoBanana replied to jack&kota's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Your body is adjusting..it is familiar with your past diets~it fights the weight loss~it will slow down metabolism~ and then get confused when you don t return to binge eating and the weight will fall. Stop weighing every day~do what you are instructed to and be prepared for a pleasant surprise in a few days. Keep in mind~you will not fail with this.! It will work. I have been at a "leveling"plateau for about 2 months....losing only 4 #s.,,then one day -i m down 3#s---~~3 days later 5# s more...and i haven t done anything different. If you aren t losing pounds~you are probably losing sizes.........good luck to you~~you will succeed. -
Originally my goal was to lose 85 pounds by my first band-iversary. I've now changed my goal, and would like to lose 65 pounds by my first band-iversary. I'm really struggling. Does anyone else feel this way? I can't find a support group meeting that fits my schedule, so my Mom suggested I join Weight Watchers. I can do okay for a few days or a couple weeks, but after that it seems like I lose all control again. I'm now wearing a size that's 4 sizes smaller than what I was wearing, but my weight keeps fluctuating. Sometimes I lose a pound in a week, sometimes my scale tells me I've gained 4 pounds overnight. Can anyone give me some advice to help me stay motivated. My Dr's office is not supportive either. Thanks for the help!

I know it turns people off when you point out their faults but it just comes out. Like another poster, my mom also made snide remarks growing up about what I eat and my dad still corners me with questions even if I don't do anything "wrong". I guess I'm psychologically giving payback or something who knows. For about a week I quit eating and just worked out like crazy. I managed to lose a few lbs but my work outs began turning into crap because I just didn't have enough energy. So, I knew I needed to start eating again, but I felt like an 80 calorie apple is 80 calories more ill have to burn for a 3,500 calorie pound. I began throwing up food. One side of me knew this was wrong (I know all the problems it can cause. I've worked in the medical field for years) but it makes total sense to the other part of me. The problem kept getting worse so I confronted my parents about it. I guess they figure if I admit to it, then it's not really there versus if I turned to skin and bones and they caught me doing it. They don't understand at all and were just thrilled that it made me lose weight. When I quit doing it, I gained those few lbs back immediately so I feel like I need To go back to those bad habits, but at the same time I know it's going to reflect in my workouts. I'm completely torn down the middle.

What is the optimal amount of calories for max weight loss?
macman replied to atlchick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have logged my food since I started this journey. It works very well for me. Calorie intake is important but just as important is the make up of the calories. How much Protein, Fats and carbohydrates are you taking in. I am 5 months out and have been doing low carb, < 50 per day. In the last few weeks I have upped my carbs to 60-70 per day and it has made a big difference with energy levels. I am still losing weight steadily, but have the energy to exercise and I feel good about it. -
What led you to your decision to have surgery so young?
castiel replied to lilricanliz's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 21 and I was just sleeved a few days ago. I felt very conflicted about this surgery. I've spent the last 2 years navigating the world of feminism and the whole fat acceptance/body positivity movement. I felt that I was finally starting say that it's okay to be fat. And to me, IT STILL IS! There really is proof out there you can be fat and healthy. You just have to eat very well and exercise... and you don't have to lose weight in the process. However, my beliefs about the HAES movement and fat people do not change the social stigma about fat people. YES, THERE ARE MANY UNHEALTHY FAT PEOPLE OUT THERE because they don't eat right. But there are plenty of healthy fat people out there too. My choice was mobility and health. I have PCOS and diabetes runs in my family. Despite exercising, I have high cholesterol. I remember being in high school having a blood test and my doctor said I would need to be on medication to control it if I didn't lower it. Well, I never went on medication nor did I do anything to help it. I've been active since I was a child. I was on the soccer team in high school and in recreational leagues growing up. I've reached this point where I want to help my PCOS, I want to help my heart, and prevent diabetes (if possible) and I want to physically change my body. I also have a hard time not eating a lot and feeling full. The whole stomach being smaller sounded excellent compared to gastric bypass which may experience stretching. There are so many things I want to do with my body that I just can't at this weight. I bicycle, but I want to get into legitimate cycling and do races. I used to run, but now I can barely make it down a street. Hills kill me and so do stairs. I want to run a 5K and eventually do a triathlon. I want to do rock wall climbing and not have to worry about weight limits and the harness not fitting. I want to go kayaking and not worry about my hips not fitting. I'd like to go to a theme park and fit in ALL of the rides. And for once, I'd like the buy clothes that I love because the world of fashion is so crappy at making cute fashionable inexpensive clothing for young plus size men and women as well as older women. We live in a thin privileged society, and for once I'd like to live that privilege and examine its effects on me! -
What led you to your decision to have surgery so young?
Aleks replied to lilricanliz's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm pre-op. I have PCOS, thyroid disease, and high blood pressure. VSG is my last hope to gain control over my weight. I have been overweight my whole life. -
So far, as part of my pre-op preparation I have: 21/7/06 Met with the GP (Dr Richards) for initial referral to surgeon; was weighed at 132kg. He said to eat less and move more - and that I'm depressed - well der fred! Of course I'm depressed - without hope of losing weight until I heard about LapBanding. I need a new GP. 28/7/06 Met with surgeon (Mr Chris Hensman, EndoSurgery Victoria)for initial consultation; was weighed at 134.3kg Had chest x-ray at The Valley Private Hospital 5/8/06 Had blood, urine, ECG tests at Melbourne Pathology, Edithvale 5/8/06 Met with GP to discuss Enhanced Primary Care Plan (referrals for dietician and psychologist) recommended by the surgeon. 8/8/06 Met with physician (Dr Lim); was weighed at 132kg. Told I have a heart murmur. I'm to have an cardiac ultrasound (echo) on 10/8/06. Mum tells me that Nana Vi had one (which wasn't picked up until she was over 90!), as does Carla (cousin). Dad has a "missing heartbeat". 8/8/06 Dropped paperwork for EPCP to GP's office. He had secretary call in the evening to say he wouldn't do it / doesn't think it's necessary. This means I'll have to pay for these visits via health insurance, resulting in a much bigger out-of-pocket cost to me. Now I KNOW I need a new GP - one who is band-friendly and more supportive. I'll ask ESV for information, or go and talk to Dr Dillon. (TERESITA - THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENT!!) 18/8/06 Second visit to Dr Lim. Heart murmur due to turbulent blood flow. Blood tests all normal, including triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose. I am good to go. Booked surgery date with ESV for Oct 5th. Roller coaster of emotion today, as dad also announced his retirement - but am elated! 24/8/06 Met jenny from LBT for a coffee - very nice lady, and very reassuring. 26/8/06 Had psychological evaluation with weight loss counsellor. Going in, I was very sceptical, and feeling defensive, however I was determined to be open and get as much out of the experience as possible. She says my emotional cues for eating are likley to be anxiety / wellbeing imbalance related. So I need to take more time to sit in the sun and do more things for myself that promote my wellbeing. oooh goody - a prescription for massage! LOL! A life-changing and very positive experience. 29/8/06 Went to fist Bandworks meeting at TVP - wow so many people! I haven't really clicked into this group yet, however met some really nice people, including tolmc (Vicky)and tarajane (Lisa) from LBT. 31/8/06 Dietician group session #1. Went through pre-op diet and post-op liquid stage. tolmc (Vicky) was there also - she's being banded in a couple of weeks.

I was so impressed with her! Did you guys bring up weight loss surgery to your doctor? My Doctor continues to discuss my need to cut calories and exercise, but will not discuss weight loss surgery. I'm about 100lbs overweight! Should I just bring it up? I really want to change my life! -
I was in the process of all the prelim things you need prior to the sleeve then Hurricane Sandy hit and the hospital that I was doing this in NYU was hit hard . The hospital I work at went under water and I'm still not back to work. I have my husbands insurance at least so that's not a problem . I just feel like I'm hitting walls ( I went for EGD and I have an ulcer and Hiatal Hernia . I've been very down because I have to wait at least 10 weeks on medication until I have another EGD to see if it clears up . So I'm probably looking at July for surgery 9 months later then I thought I would have it and steadily gained more weight because if the stress issues I'm going this Friday to see the surgeon again to see when we can finally get the ball rolling on this . I pray it's sooner than later !!

I had my lap band surgery in May 2012, I've lost 59 pounds since then, the past few months my weight loss has slowed down to about 4 pounds a month, I still have good restriction, however I have never had a fill. Wondering if it's time to have one, due to the slow weight loss? I have 53 lbs to get to my goal weight, which I as hoping to reach by my one year anniv. Also I am diabetic, which also affects the amount of weight you lose due to having to take insulin. Any thoughts?

I got 2 cc as well on my first fill. My second fill is next week and I do not feel restricted at all right now in fact I have gained 2 lbs in the last two weeks and I don't want to feel like this wasn't worth it Sent from my iPhone using LapBandTalk

Congrats on your date! You will be so happy with your sleeve! It is an amazing tool : ) I wish I would have known about it sooner .... but truly, I needed the kick in the butt to get it done. It was very hard for me to admit "failure" and ask for help. However, after being told by two doctors in one week that I had to lose 50 lbs or more, I knew it had to be done. My advice to you would be to stay positive. You will feel yucky for a couple of days after surgery. Adjusting to a new eating style can be more of a mental than physical challenge. Look at the averages for weight loss and use it for general info, but do not get frustrated if your loss is at a different rate than someone else. When you get home, take a shower, put on clean clothes - and not pj's, go for a short walk or just around your house. You will feel better if you don't lay around in pj's all day. Good luck with your surgery! This will definitely change and improve your life!

I've done the 5 months of monitored weight loss. I'm having doubts. My acid reflux has gotten so bad I now have to take omeprazole everyday because apparently everything I eat now gives me heartburn. I'm doubting my surgeon, the type of surgery I originally picked, the hospital and this whole thing. The surgeon hasn't followed up with me at all. I've seen him once since my first meeting. Are they supposed to follow up? The sleeve makes acid reflux worse, I'm teetering with the idea of bypass but not sure my surgeon will agree to do it. The other surgeon in the practice that I originally met with does bypass but he is seemed so impersonable and quick to pass me to another surgeon that I don't know if I would want him to do it-but he's been doing it for 32years. If I move hospitals I'm afraid of issues with medical records and tests being transferred over. I know deep down I want to do this-so bad, but I'm having so much anxiety. I need help please.

Hi Lorna and congratulations for joining this site for support. Only you can make the decision about which surgery, I can only tell you about making my decision for the gastric sleeve and here goes: Lap band was never a consideration for me because I have had two friends who've had theirs taken out because of slippage or fill problems. I was interested in something permanent. To my advantage, my next door neighbor had the sleeve surgery last October so I was able to witness her recovery and weight loss first hand. Although she is much younger than I am & realize her surgery might go much better than mine, I began intensive research not only on this site but also read any news reports I could get my hands on. I interviewed several people who had the sleeve with the same dr I was intending to use. I spoke to those who mattered to me for their reaction & support. Then, I began to prepare myself the months of eating liquids, then mushies, then soft solids. The thing which has encouraged me so much is my neighbor. She is 7 months out and can basically eat anything she wishes but in small amounts--3-5 bites, then she's finished. She's lost 52 lbs so far Something I know about my body is that it dosen't handle anesthesia very well. So my first day after surgery was rough however the next day was so much better, then the next day was even better and so on. I'm walking a lot and progressing on point as much as I can tell. I know the sleeve seems so permanent but my question was why would I want the extra stomach back at some time? Here are my stats: Age 59 Height 4ft 11& 3/4 in Weight at surgery 194 lbs Have not weighed again since surgery---am waiting for first dr appt. BMI 38 I wish you the best of luck in making your decision--it is not one to take lightly. And your comment about loosing weight on your own--of course that would be the optimal choice. I lost 59 lbs 6 yrs ago---it took a year of diligent work, eating low carb only, walking 3 miles a day for 5-6 days a week. Then you know what happened? I had an emotional crisis going on in my life so I began to eat as I did previously. I gained the lbs back and more. Then I went on a Quest to lose the weight year after year with nutri-system, HGC diet, Atkins, and nothing stuck. I am weak when it comes to food and like my dr told me, the sleeve will give me the control I need for those times when eating is out of control. I don't know if I've helped you but please continue to research. Oh by the way, I had little doubts pop up in my mind occasionally before the surgery, that is normal. This is a life altering experience.

Another study on "food addiction"
HHHappy replied to Arts137's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm a food addict, too. I've always told people who stressed eating more vegetables to lose weight... that wasn't the problem! Veggies don't satisfy my palate unless there is butter on them or some type of cheese sauce. -

Thanks Ladies. Melissa, I cannot wait to eat some eat post op. IN Three more weeks, I want a chicken quasedia (sp) and I already know I"m gonna get precooked chicken, cheese shreds, low car tortilla shells and low fat sour cream. I look forward to eating meats. Even if I can only have 2 bites. I do like veggies and fruits too. I'm glad it's not my 14 year old right now, it's so bad to be fat. Soceity looks down so heavily on body weight. Then, on top of that, the media is declaring war on being fat, everything is blown up. My husband and I do not allow our daughter to drink Soda. All her class mates bring this up and they are 5. Guess whose teeth are not rotting. One kid's teeth are nasty brown on the fronts, he's definitly a soda kid. Keep pumping. I get staples out today.

Welcome Rocio, your journey so far has been fast. Did you do a lot of research first, if you did not have time then use this site to get answers to questions. There is a search facility and lots of answers - you will find that the same questions come up on a regular basis. I would suggest that you look at the following to get started 3 week stall Depression after surgery/buyers remorse What to eat on purée/soft diet stage If you do have any questions then just post them and you will find that there are lots of helpful people on this site who have lots of experience. There is one thing I would urge you to do and tat is to take your measurements, you will find periods when the scale does not move and when this happens recheck your measurements and you will find you have lost inches. Also claim this weigtloss journey for yourself and do not try to compare yourself to others and their weigtloss, you will ALWAYS find someone who loses faster than you and if you compare yourself it is easy to get down. Your body will lose weight at the rate that is best for you - keep on mind that your journey may take longer than you think. Again welcome, this is a brilliant site. Cathy
