    One Year Slump

Hello! I need to hear from those that have contuinued to loose weight after their 1 yr. anniv. I have been STUCK for about 2 months. Even after exercising and eating good, the scales WON'T MOVE!!! i have lost 83 lbs to date, but for the past two months, I have been going up & down with the same 10 lbs! What is worse, is that I am going between 195 & 205. I am now pretty much staying under 200, but it is SO Frusterating to keep loosing the same 5 lbs over & over & over!!!! I am beginning to wonder, is this IT?? Please, share your experiences after a year has passed!!! :angry
  3. Congrats on your loss. I was wondering to what do you attribute the high weight loss success that you have had? Do you exercise a great deal? Any input would be appreciated. I see such varied losses. I was banded on the 15th and have lost 10 lbs (as of 1 wk post-op). Monday is my first follow-up, so I will wait to find out my official loss until then. It is a bit of a behavior issue I am working with myself not to give in to the "need" to hop on the scale on a daily basis. Just trying to limit it to once weekly. I would love to hear from you or anyone with their success strategies. I am exercising. In fact, back to the gym in the a.m. and cannot wait! Hope to hear from you when you have a chance. Enjoy the weekend.

    Nervous

Hey someone named cope tried to ask me if all I was paying was 8000.00 the true answer is 7900.00 Plus 450.00 /person for two to fly down and back. I can't even begin to tell you how impressed I was with the Hotel and facility that they promised me. It was really on the up and up. Dr. Arturo Rodriguez in Monterey Mexico is who took care of me and he was quit impressive. He came to see me every day at the hosp. and hotel he took care of all taxi services and the hospitality was outstanding. The hotel was cleaner than several places I’ve stayed at in the states. I was treated very well. I’m now 8 day post operation. My bruising is almost all gone. I have 5 hole 4 are small and 1 a little large. However that is because I had an enlarged liver and they had to work around it. I would do it all over again no question asked. I have lost 14 lbs some for and my goal is 80-100 lbs. I was banded 08-19-06. I hope who was asking me finds this I was trying to find you (COPE) I’m just not that good on the computer. Sorry I hope this isn’t too late for you. I have also research Dr. Rumbart and he also was recommended well. Good Luck.

    surgery on the 30th!!

I'm 7days post op I had my surgery on the 29th and I've been having pain (2 out of 10 on the pain scale) from these burp/hiccup things it hurts around my heart. I don't know how to really explain it. also I don't know if its from laying around too much or a signal that i'm too full but the middle of my back hurts alot. Other than that everything has been going well so far.

    Help please!

Hey. I'm exactly the same, I've had my band since last November, so around 7 months. I've lost around 10 or 11 kgs, and am completely discouraged, It's been so much harder for me than I thought it would be. I know the big thing for me is that I'm not eating properly, I don't eat for my full 20 minutes and often skip lunch and snack. I went to see my dietician a week ago and she told me that's probably the reason I'm not losing the weight like I should be!
  8. Happy Bandiversary to Me!!! One year ago today, I was banded. I was hoping to reach my goal by now but, I'm happy with my success so far. Hope to reach my goal this summer. So excited that my size 12 jeans fit me big and have to move down to size 10. Thanks for all the support this year follow Banditos!

    Where Do I Start?

Hi Robin! And good for you to be making the plans and jumping through the hoops to get your Sleeve. It is a life changing event and the time will pass more quickly than you think. How to get started.....maybe slowly. Do you watch tv? Get up at EVERY commercial and walk in place. Set a timer to walk outside for 5 or 10 minutes every couple of hours. Sometimes baby steps are really just baby steps. I loved, loved, loved food. My pre-op diet was not as strict as a lot of the ones I see posted here and it made me feel so good. All I had to do was cut out sugar and carbs. Everything else was unlimited. Meats and most veggies plus added 50 additional grams of protein per day. I lost more weight doing that than I've lost in the past 2 weeks; and I didn't feel deprived. Just some suggestions. I know you'll do it if it's what you want in your mind, body and soul. P.S. - Don't lay around with a cold (that's how colds turn into bronchitis and pneumonia) get outside and walk around. Your lungs will thank you! Good luck, we're here for you!

Okay, take a deep breath and calm down Bariatric surgery will REDUCE your risk of death by 89%. And that includes the tiny risk of death associated with any surgery. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1356432/ What if i die on the operation table? We all have to die somehow, and my take on that possibility was (1) it's a tiny risk, less than a half of one percent; and (2) since we have to die, dying on an operation table is probably the best way to go. It's painless, you don't know it's happening, and there are people there to take care of your body and inform your family. Better that than having a massive stroke (huge risk for obese people btw) at home alone, being unable to summon help, dying slowly and painfully and then having your body be eaten by your pets. Wont the staples in my stomach cause cancer on a later stage? I'm not aware of any science showing that staples cause cancer. You know what probably does cause cancer though? Obesity! http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/causes-prevention/risk/weight-activity/obesity-fact-sheet http://www.asco.org/practice-research/obesity-and-cancer Will the staples not cause discomfort? No, you can't feel the staples. You will probably have some discomfort immediately after surgery, caused by the incisions and the gas they use to inflate your abdomen for surgical access, but you will get good pain meds to take care of it and it will go away quickly. Will the fact that i had the procedure not cut my life expectancy short? No, bariatric surgery is associated with a lower death rate than is found in morbidly obese people who choose not to have surgery: http://bariatric.stopobesityforlife.com/does-bariatric-surgery-increase-life-expectancy-in-obese-patients/ You know what will significantly decrease your life expectancy? Yes, you guessed it, remaining morbidly obese will! http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/12/01/weight.shortens.lifespan.health/ "According to recent NIH statistics obese individuals have a 50 to 100% increased risk of death from all causes compared to normal weight individuals." http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1473136/ All that emotional energy you are spending being afraid of surgery? Spend it on being afraid of obesity instead. That's what should scare you and make you willing to step outside your comfort zone to fight it with the most effective weapon possible, which for the vast majority of people is bariatric surgery.

  14. Every insurance policy is written differently. You will need to contact them to see if you have coverage and what their requirements are to be approved. I'm in the process right now and they require a 3 month medically monitored weight loss, a psych eval, 2 years of medically noted weight and an appointment with a nutritionist. My surgeons office takes it a step further and requires a 10% of access weight loss (for me this is 19lbs), a sleep study, a letter of support from PCP and to attend a support group meeting. All in all I'm looking at a total of 4 to 5 months before I am cleared for sugery.

    I MAKE 1 YEAR POST-OP ON APRIL 1st

It's been an interesting 10 months. I've had some ups and downs along the way. But im happy to say that things are finally coming together. Im getting healthier and Im definitely happier. Im currently down 90 pounds. Trying to it my 100 pound mark by my 1 year surgiversary (April 1St). I am extremely happy I had this surgery. I needed it. My knees and my feet couldn't take my weight anymore. I was having constant pain in my back, I had trouble sleeping. Dieting just hadn't worked for me in the past and my exercising was limited. I was in fear of getting diabetes and most of all dying young. I was tired of being depressed and unhappy. I had my surgery April 1St, 2014. I am now down 90 pounds from where I was (280). And I have 60 pounds left to get to my goal (130). This surgery has been one of the decisions I have ever made. But I am in no way shape or form saying it is easy. Because it sure isn't. The main thing to remember about this surgery and the other surgerys is to reach optimal results YOU MUST DO YOUR PART. Yes you will lose weight but if you don't do your part it will return. I've seen it. My mom and my sister have both had the surgery as well different times. My sister had it a year before me and my mom had hers over 10 years ago. They both struggle with their weight now. My mom was down to 180 at her lowest she lost 150pounds and struggles now a days and fluctuates between 215 and 240. My sister had lost 100 pounds and was down to 240. She's now at 260. The reason why they are struggling is because they didn't adapt and make a lifestyle change. You must eat better you must exercise. Im not saying go run a marathon (unless you want too). But just add a little 30min exercise to your day. It might not seem like a lot but it's an extra 30 minutes of exercises that you weren't going to do. You don't need a gym membership. Squats, lunges, push ups, sit ups, crunches, torso twists, kicks, walking, etc etc etc is all FREE! AND BE REALISTIC! This is the problem my sister and my mom have and it's normal. My mom noticed more that I was exercising more and she got inspired and motivated and that's awesome. So what did she do? She started on day 1: 90 sit ups!!! Really? I don't even do 90 sit ups yet. I mean I probably could but im not trying to hurt myself the point is to progress. Anyway...what happens with the 90 push ups. The next day she's in so much pain she can barely bend down to tie her shoes and what happens next? No more sit ups. The point im trying to make is be realistic. You don't have to kill yourself right off at the start. It's a gradual process. Start small and work toward a greater goal. If she would have done what I suggested start of 25 sit ups and then gradually increase by 5 she would ultimately get to 90 because she wouldn't be in so much pain and she wouldn't give up because your changing it up and your progressing. BE REALISTIC...RESULTS WILL COME. I do zumba at home, I work out at home. Im starting to go to the gym now though. Eating better is important!!! Diet is key. I'm not saying starve yourself. You will get no where with that. Plan your means ahead of time. I started doing this and it's helped me so much I don't have to think about it. I don't get tempted as much. It's great. The main thing is GET YOUR Protein IN FIRST...then your veggies then your carbs. Stay way from sugary things. Fruits will satisfy that sugary craving usually. And there is nothing wrong with giving into your temptation. This surgery is not only physical it is a mental one and it takes your mind longer to catch up to speed. It's going to keep thinking you can eat the things you were and the quantity. Example: my husband had texted me he was going to order pizza for dinner one day. I told him to order a medium pizza. He asked if i was sure amd i said yes. Normally we would have gotten 2 large pizza's.(there is a purpose to this) The whole time I was at work I was literally thinking about all the pizza I was going to eat. How many slices! Yum! I couldn't wait. I decided before I got home I was going to have 2 slices maybe 3! I got home he was eating his pizza. I went to the box. At first I thought im gonna put the 2 slices on my plate. Then I was like no. I'll put only half of one on my plate when I finish I'll get up and get another. I ate the half of a slice of pizza and I was full and content. If I would have put the whole slice of pizza on the plate I probably would have make myself eat it even if I was full. And the point in buying a smaller pizza is...if I would have bought 2 large pies...he would be the one eating it all by himself. Which isn't good or healthy. Medium size pizza smaller slices...he had only ate 4 slices which u can equate to 2 maybe 3 large pizza slices and he was content. food is all mental. Im not in no way shape or form saying pizza is healthy. Im just saying you can treat yourself...because not treating yourself can actually make you sabotage yourself, by binging or over eating. Complications I had along the way: 1. The day after I got sent home I found out I was allergic to the Tylenol and Codeine I was prescribed. My lip had swell like a balloon. Wasn't anything super major but I did go a whole day with out pain medication which was really ok. I did have pain but I still did move around. 2. About 3 weeks after my surgery, I went to the ER. I had a lot of abdominal pain. It felt like a pulling filling right at the incision above my belly button. Turns out it's the stitch that was there on the inside. It tends to kink at times and it was normal by readjusting myself and my position it but have kinked. 3. In September, I had a scare. I was working pretty much everyday 16 hour shift. It was the norm for me. I had 2 jobs. Well one day after I got out of work, I was driving and all of a sudden I began to shake. My body was shaking not like a seizure but like if I was cold. It was weird because I wasn't a cold night. I rolled up the window and proceeded. I was still shaking...teeth shattering cold...and it was painful. I was only 10mins from where I needed to be. I turned on the heat on high but the seat warmer on. I was still cold and my body was in excruciating pain. I was trying not to panic and I was afraid to stop. No one knew where I was and my phone was dead. My vision got blurred by the time I got to the house and my husband opened the door. I told him I wasn't feeling good and I was worried. He helped me up the stairs and I got so cold. I couldn't even hold a cup of Water my hands were shivering so much. He was going to take me to the hospital but I couldn't move I felt so faint when I stood up so he called 911. I went to the hospital. They did some tests. I had some kind of virus like a small 24 hr flu. My Iron, Vitamin D, and B12 levels were so low that I was pretty much running on Empty and my body was trying to reboot. It had no energy to fight off the virus so my immune system was compromised. Afterwards I was so weak and my body hurt. I had to take off from work until my levels were a little better. I was off for 2 months. Vitamin D deficiency sucks really bad. So be sure to be taking your Vitamins. I am now prescribed prescription strength vitamin D and have to get blood work every couple months. My levels still aren't where they need to be but they are a lot better than what they were and im able to function. This surgery is a journey lots of ups and downs along the way. But I believe it's well worth it and I would do it again. My journey isn't over yet....if you have any questions definitely message me!

    I MAKE 1 YEAR POST-OP ON APRIL 1st

I think my biggest concern is I never know when I am eating too much OR too little because I'm usually preoccupied with counting grams of Protein and carbs. I'm one month post-op and have lost 19 lbs post-op (27 total) but have had 2 stalls already (one due to monthly cycle). I really don't want to be one of those people who go thru all this and don't lose anything which I have to admit is one of my greatest fears.

  19. Good luck to you. I start my 10 day liquid diet on Sunday. My husband and I are going to the Final Four in Dallas. I am going to stick to the diet. I just hope I won't be grumpy. We'll be walking a lot and my knees aren't in the best of shape. I'm so happy to be getting closer and closer to my surgery date.
  20. My dr put me on the 2 week pre-op mostly liquid diet, and asked that I try to lose 10 lbs before surgery. Well after 3 days I've lost about 7.5 lbs. I'm fairly close to the 40 BMI cutoff (I only had 15 lbs before going under 40) and am afraid that if I go under the 40 BMI that insurance won't cover the procedure. Has anyone run into this? I have BCBS of MA if that matters.
  21. Oh yeah. I almost forgot about that part of the hospital stay. My heart rate averaged around 40 bpm and at night it would drop to 35 or 30. I thought, wow my heart rate is getting low. The nurses had to reset the alarm threshold 5 times I think. The most annoying part was that the alarm would go off every 10 minutes at night and the nurses would stop coming in. I finally got the alarm silenced so I could get some sleep. Hand in hand, my o2 levels were also getting low at 75. Walking around the halls caused them to drop more. I finally got to go home after a week when the bpm and o2 levels stabilized. I did a ton of walking for the next 3 weeks, 3-5 times a day slowly improving my endurance. I think I felt myself again at about 1 month.

If It's Not One Thing Its Another!

I don't think I could stand constant nausea:(. My biggest concern right now is i am not even getting enough fluids in. For instance today I've only had about 30oz and its already 10:47pm
  23. I decided to post this so we can all remember the basic rules to succeed with vsg. I have noticed my weightloss has slowed down allot mostly due to eating too many carbs. Im in the calorie range my doc wants to be in but my carbs are high. according to his book if you stall or plateau its either 3 things:too much carbs, not enough exercise, or your building muscle. For me i think its the first 2. Here we go! 1. I will exercise 5 times a week for 30-45 minutes. 2.I will watch my carbohydrate intake 3.I will try to eat 3-5 meals per day with no unhealthy snacking in between 4.I will drink 8 glasses of Water per day 5.I will eat a minimum of 60-70 grams of Protein daily 6.I will honor my commitment to good health and healthy choices 7.I will have follow up care appointments with my doc as needed 8.I will always take my Vitamins 9.I will weight my self once a week 10.I will remember that this is my own journey and not compare my self to others 11.I will always keep in mind that practicing my new habits will make me healthier happier stronger and more energetic. This is what I turn to when I fall off the wagon sort of speak. I need to drink more water, eat more protein, exercise more, and drink more water. Gotta keep my head in the game. Thanks to my Dr.Alvarez for his awesome book about vsg. Hope this helps others

    Aug 22 is my date!

How are you feeling? I ended up staying in the hospital until Sunday. Feeling pretty good but exhausted. Doc says it's because I'm not getting enough nutrition. I'm averaging about 700 calories a day. Today I was weighed at his office. I've lost 15 pounds. He said 10-15 at this point was average.
  25. Hi ladies--- I'm 10 days post op, and I've noticed that if I try to wear an underwire bra I get a strange indigestion kind if pressure. Let me just say--- I need an underwire. The tatas are not so fluffy since I've dropped 40lbs;(. Will this last forever or am I just moving too fast? Appreciate your thoughts, Sara
