    Things that the Dr.'s didn't tell us!!!

    With the shoe size, is it just the width or also the length that goes down? I was just complaining to my boyfriend a few months ago that I seem to have gently progressed from size 9-9.5 to size 10 in shoes. I'm 25 and haven't grown vertically since I was 11 or 12, so I speculated that it was due to weight gain. I can barely squeeze my feet into a 9 these days, and only a few years ago I regularly wore size 9s. I'm also not that tall, so size 10 is really large.

My surgery is scheduled for the 6th, and I gained 5 lbs last week....I am so scared that because my weight went up they will not do the surgery....as of right now, nothing but liquids until wed....I cannot exercise do to over exercising these past two days and causing blisters on my feet...I can barely walk....any sugestions? Anyone have a weight gain before surgery???

    Thanks. You will get there. I got very discouraged a few weeks ago. I actually gained 5 pounds over 2 days, and I was horrified. I couldn't figure out what I had done that was different to cause me to gain weight. I still don't know what I did to cause the weight gain. I just know that I didn't want to do a "diet". I was also wondering if I would ever get to my goal. There are days that I still do wonder that.
  4. It sounds like things are going great. Its understandable that you would be nervous, you've had some traumatic experiences in the past. I have not been banded and pregnant but I have been pregnant and lost significant weight. On purpose, with the blessing of my doctor because I was 220 odd pounds when I conceived and I had had preeclampsia twice before. I did NOT want to pile on weight, although in the ironic way these things go, that is not the way my body tends to react to pregnancy. Statistically, gaining weight during pregnancy within normal limits is associated with a healthy pregnancy. That's only a statistic. As my doc pointed out for me, the baby needs nutrition, not fat. You need to take in adequate carbs, Protein, Vitamins and minerals, you do not necessarily need to take in a lot of extra calories and gain fat. You can gain the average weight during pregnancy by eating Big Mac's or ice cream and pickles or whatever(in fact most women do!) and you have not done one single thing to increase your odds of a healthy baby whereas you can eat perfectly, not gain weight and have done brilliant things for your baby. If you are sure you're eating the recommended intakes of various foods and you are supplementing well, dont let minor weight loss worry you, if its getting a bit out of control, supplement with somethign healthy like a fruit smoothie, made with some milk, some fruit, even a bit of cream or full fat yogurt. That packs in calories AND nutrition (I wouldnt turn to artificial foods like shakes at this time, if you want to go that way go for a weight gain supplement without all the artificial ingredients). If you really cant eat enough, the unfill a bit, you'll probably get tighter and need to eventually. good luck!
  5. I too was banded on 9/21.. Yesterday was the first time i really felt hungry. I have added 2 protien shakes between meals. I also bought some creamy Soups, they seem to fill me up more than regular broth base soups. Campbells has a large variety of flavors, so you don't have to eat cream of chicken all the time. I know they have more carbs,but since I am still on liquids I am not getting any other carbs. I am also worried about weight gain before my first fill, which isn't until 10/21. I have lost 41 pounds so far and don't wont to gain it back, but without some restriction I don't know how much longer I can keep it off..   6. Hi all, I was just wondering, in 3 days, I will be 4weeks post op, and have noticed that I have not lost a single pound in 2 weeks. I am starting to obsess that I am doing something terribly wrong. Highest weight ever 164kgs/382lbs Pre op diet start weight 159kgs/371lbs Pre surgery weight 143kgs/333lbs Discharge Hospital weight 147kgs/343lbs (Hospital staff advise this weight gain was Fluid?) Current Weight & Weight 2 weeks ago 132kgs/308lbs I take in small amounts, I am drinking diluted apple or pear juice, and can still only take in 2 tablespoons of food at one time. I am eating 6 x a day if i remember, but usually only 4, and keep up my fluid intake. I'm not 'grazing' and I am actually exercising, so I just dont get this 2 week stall so early in the game. Im feeling super discouraged, and honestly dont know where else to turn for help, can you tell me (anyone) if this is normal? if it would be impossible to NOT lose weight having undergone gastric sleeve? I keep trying to rationalise that for someone who has gone from eating as much as I used to (to get me to my start weight) to nearly eating / drinking bird like proportions, that surely one has no choice but to lose, but this is seeming very far from accurate at the current time. :thumbup: Many thanks to anyone reading/replying Kels
  7. I have found that, as I've pared out sugary (and most artificially-sweetened) foods, my previously overactive sweet tooth has gone into retirement. That doesn't mean that I don't sometimes have treats; I do. But they are just that, occasional treats. I now see the wisdom of my doctor's eating regimen. At first, I followed it simply because I believed (and experienced!) that it would best promote loss. But I know get it: removing certain foods from my repertoire for a period of time quashed the craving monster. And now, when I've been green-lighted to add foods back, they don't trigger craving. It's pretty darn magical--at least for me. The monster has been slain. So, I agree with the advice to get the stuff out of your house. Learn to manage your band, lose a significant percentage of your excess body weight, gain a sense of real mastery of the problem---YOU are in control! And when the time comes, you can indulge---and the strength of any cravings that result will be more manageable, because you will have great coping skills, great weight loss, and a greater sense of control under your belt.
  8. My husband was completely against me doing the surgery. He was angry that I made the decision despite his objections. 16 months later, he LOVES my thin body and agrees it was one of the best decisions ever ... although he blames me for his weight gain because he likes to finish my meals. :smile2:

    Effectiveness of LapBand on men

    It absolutely “can” work. For me, it worked beautifully. I am 6’ tall and went from 282lbs down to as low as 170lbs. I am back up to 185-190, but that has been a welcome weight gain as I have been working out and gaining lean muscle mass. My BMI went from over 38 to under 25, more importantly my Body Fat percentage is hovering between 13-15% (which is considered excellent). Was it easy? No, nothing that works is. You have to learn how to work the tool, you have to set goals, and you have to do some work. Before this, I wasn’t always to most dedicated dieter or workout person. With the band though, I saw that my work was paying off (while losing weight I was dropping 2-4 lbs per week). Now I am careful about what I eat (but not super anal about it) and am very motivated to maintain and improve my physical fitness. I do some sort of workout 5 days a week (usually a couple of days in the gym, and a few days on the bike).

    13 weeks pregnant, high risk and banded

    During my pregnancy I didn't gain any weight until I was 38 weeks pregnant. Then I gain three. Then I gained 2 pounds making my pregnany weight gain of 5 pounds. If you are overweight from the beginning they don't stress out if you lose weight. My doctor didn't.
  12. One day at a time...today is Day 3 on Atkins Induction. Surprisingly, I'm not craving as much as I have in the past when I went on induction. Maybe it's the mental attitude of seeing my carbs as a true addiction and knowing that I'm avoiding them completely for that reason...and not just a diet to lose weight? Who knows the head games we play with ourselves. :smile: At any rate, my headache is finally gone and I feel better than I usually do the first week. The mental fog seems to be gone as well. Bonus - my belly is shrinking again. At some point, after that initial reshifting of body weight (skinny legs, no butt or hips, belly reducing) any weight gain (which I did when I went from onederland back up about 20 pounds) went right to the tummy so it's nice to see it shrinking back down. Since I'm on the induction phase I don't worry about monitoring the quantity...just making sure I'm eating minimal carbs. So, since it's a cold, rainy day I think I'm going to make a pot of my chinese Soup so I can sip on it throughout the day. It's pretty low calorie anyway but very satisfying. Only 4 more days to Disney! WOOHOO! .

    What are you asking Lemma? Do you think you should be losing more? As you say each of us is different. I think a lot depends on the amount of food you ate before, whether you lose it fast or not. I was never a big eater at one sitting, I grazed a lot, so in fact must have consumed a lot more calories than was good for me, hence the weight gain. But my weight loss has been slow, cos I still graze and mostly the wrong foods, I hold my hand up to that, but sometimes if I can only eat ice cream I will, the alternative being is to starve. Thats how i deal with my band and I am looking leaner these days. I feel much better when I get dressed to go out, I dont find myself continually looking in the mirror to see if that top makes me look fat, my clothes are much more comfortable. I am striving to fit into a jacket that I bought 30 years ago. its still tight but not like it used to be, thats my goal. I have a piccy somewhere I think of when it fitted me, I'll look for it.

    my surgery date is October the 6th. I have been waiting for about 4 months now and I did also read and watched a lot about the band. I am looking forward to that. I know I am the one to blame for all the weight gain but you know there are a lot of factors that made me gain weight. Like miscarriages, depression and so on so I look at it as a second chance to make my life better and to be able to move around more without hurting my back or my knees. That alone makes me look forward to it. I hope you will feel better about it.

    A sliver isn't bad....one average sized slice has about 800 cals. And, I used to always have to have it ala mode. Makes me cringe to think of the mindless eating I used to do. I have been going thru some photos while watching TV. Just so shocking to look at these photos and the not so gradual weight gain from year to year:crying:

    Just working towards page #1000 and watching Desparate Housewives. Arlene...pecan pie is my favorite also and think that it was the cause of at least 75#s of my weight gain. My grandmother was the best cook and baker. She baked every day. She was our neighbor and always had fresh baked good when the 8 of us kids came home from school. Glad your son liked the cake. Lori...glad things are resolve with DH. Janet....the work change next week sounds like a good plan. Less stress during a busy week.
  17. That's good you are aware of the weight gain and want to do something about it. Sounds like you need to go back to basics when it comes to food choices. What did you eat before when you where loosing? I would go back to those foods. Of course, keep up the cycling! You can correct this minor bump in the road.

I don't want to sound mean spirited but it sounds to me like you shut off your tool (took the saline out), and ate what ever you wanted. The question is was what you wanted unhealthy fattening foods/ and how much of it? I am a big proponent of the 90/10 theory of eating. Eat what you know is the the right way and good for you food 90% of the time and treats (not always dessert) 10%. When I was preband I was going to meet friends at Chili's for lunch. I normally ordered the bite size burgers with fries. Turns out that meal has 1,000 cal and 100 g of fat! What! No wonder even though I was doing more than 7 hours of cardio a week I was a slow looser. I have a friend who lost over 50 on WW and who bikes like a fiend. They were noticing some weight gain because they had reintroduced dessert. Guess what they had to cut back on. Again, I don't want to sound harsh because we all have our food issues. I don't keep carbs like bread, Cereal, crackers in my house because I don't have good control. I wonder if you journaled your food and if necessary went back to weighing all your food you would notice counter productive behavior.
  19. I do feel for you but am wondering as to whether you have gained muscle rather than fat? I know there is a scale that can do the reading which good gyms have. Would you feel happier if your weight gain is associated with muscle which is much heavier than fat?
  20. I am feeling so good now! I made my 100 lb loss mark this week! I was banded 4/14/10, 5 months ago. I lost 28 lbs pre-op (starting in the middle of March) with a ketosis diet prescribed by Dr. Hollis. I was 265 on surgery day. I used to wear XXXL, now just a large, and sometimes a medium in shirts. I still have 22 more lbs to go, but I am not worried about it. I am feeling so energetic and full of life again. Before I was very depressed and hating myself. I was only operating at 50%. There were may things I would not/could not do anymore. The biggest thing that stood out to me was riding horses! I have been a horse-person since I was 8 yrs old, owning my first horse at age 14. I have been riding and owning horses ever since (I am 42 now). But I had to give it up with this weight gain I expereinced over a 2 year period. I have been heavy before, and lost the weight with various aids. I think my biggest weight loss before this was 85 lbs, another time it was 65. I could not keep it off! I am hoping this will change this time and I can keep it off. I just have to remind myself how miserable I was when I was like that. I kept a diary (still do), so I can go back and read it when I feel weak. I can ride again! I have sold my horses a while back, but a friend has extras for me to ride, so I do (no $$!):smile2: So I am back in the saddle again! I look forward to mowing the 2 huge lots we have, riding bikes, exercising, etc.. because I know when I am sweating (in Texas!), I am burning calories, raising my metabolism, and dropping pounds, I get a nice body-high afterwards, I feel very light on my feet and strong! I have not felt this in many years. I am glad to be sharing this journey with all of you, and I hope you have sucess as well, and overcome any obstacles that have gotten in your way. I knowthere are a lot of you out there who are struggling with this still (from reading other posts here), and I truely hope and pray that something will work for you to help it happen like it should. My biggest incentives are putting on a pair of my XXXL clothes I saved, looking at old photos, and re-reading my diary I have been keeping. Maybe you could try the same>?   21. I have UHC Choice Plus through Georgia Pacific. My only prequalifications are a BMI over 40 (which I have just barely) and a 5 year medical history showing I've been overweight. I only need one Dr's note per year. I also have that with no issues. I also need a letter of medical necessity, which I'll obviously get from my PCP. I'm excited to move forward. I am gathering those Dr's notes now, which has been a little tedious, due to the fact that I would switch doctors because I was ashamed of my weight gain! (also, I had to find Dr's who would prescribe diet pills at different times. I am hoping that I was seeking diet help with MOST of the appointments HELPS me.) Anyway, I'm a step closer to actually being approved and my insurance coordinator at the Dr's office said that UHC is pretty easy to work with! I'm hoping to have surgery around February. THey did say my OOP share will be about 1500 including my 500 deductible.

    September Bandsters!

    Banded on 9/20 and doing better each day. Until today, even clear liquids were difficult. I find that mid day I can get cream soups and yogurt down, but morning and evening I start to feel restriction even with water. I am constantly sipping on water all day to attempt to stay hydrated. The gas pains were so much more than I ever remember with any other surgery, and that has been the most difficult part, but I just keep walking Prior to surgery I was doing about 45 minutes of cardio on the elliptical, and worried that the lack of exercise will lead to a weight gain, but I am sticking with the doctors orders. I am very excited to continue this journey!

Reduction in body fat: reducing the amount of fat found in the abdomen and the liver can decrease your surgical risks. ? Preserving muscle tissue: increasing Protein intake helps the body burn fat instead of muscle for energy during a low calorie diet. ? Preparing the patient for the post-operative diet: the pre-op diet is similar to the diet you will follow after surgery in that it is low carbohydrate, high protein, and reduced calorie. Following the diet prior to surgery allows your body to adjust to lower intake levels. The pre-operative diet will begin two weeks prior to surgery, unless otherwise specified by your surgeon. Week One: (14 days prior to surgery) ? Drink two *protein shakes per day, and consume one *meal. ? Consume a minimum of 64 ounces of Water per day. ? You may supplement with sugar free Jell-O Gelatin, sugar free popsicles, and chicken, vegetable, or beef soup broth. Week Two: (7 days prior to surgery) ? Drink four *protein shakes per day. ? Consume a minimum of 64 ounces of water per day. ? You may supplement with sugar free Jell-O gelatin, sugar free popsicles, and chicken, vegetable, or beef soup broth. One day prior to surgery: ? Consume only Clear liquids. This may include water, chicken, vegetable, or beef soup broth, sugar free Jell-O gelatin, sugar free popsicles, unsweetened decaffeinated tea, and Powerade Zero. You should not have anything to eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery. Recommendations: ? It is acceptable to begin supplementing with a daily Multivitamin prior to surgery. ? Resist the ?last supper syndrome.? Avoid consuming large quantities of food prior to surgery. This will only lead to dependence on higher calorie levels for satisfaction and possibly weight gain. ? If you are currently being treated with medications and/or insulin for diabetes, contact your primary care physician before beginning the pre-operative diet so that he/she can make the necessary adjustments to these medications. Pre-Op Diet: Protein shake Guidelines Per shake: 200 calories or less 15g protein or more

    Surviving Bandster Hell...

    I didn't have to survive bandster hell because my doctor doesn't believe in it. Two weeks post op and I was back on regular foods with the caveat to eat slowly, pay attention to the foods that were giving me problems and then avoid them. He was clear that until I had some restriction in my band I would most likely be able to eat as much as I used to. His advice..."if you're hungry, then eat" but he stressed making good choices and eating healthy meals. I didn't have the weight gain after surgery that many have and actually continued losing right up until I had restriction. You may be worrying needlessly, but just in case, look through your band literature or go online if you weren't given any. My band literature (Realize band) states the conditions where a fill is needed and it has nothing to do with weight loss. My says a fill is needed if the patient is hungry and still able to eat to excess. The band, when at the right restriction, will not let you eat to excess without serious consequences (sliming, PBing, regurgitating, pain)...assuming you are eating healthy meals. For some reason, the junk goes down without problem so avoid it. Then highlight this information and take it into your appointment. If you're hungry and eating to excess...and your doctor still refuses a fill...find a new doc. Just my .02. .
