It's Halloweenie! Since I'm still on liquids, I bought no candy for trick or treaters. I had one come up though my light wasn't on. Ignored. Then I had some middle schooler come up at 10:50pm. WTH! So anyway, I have one week left on liquids and it's REALLY getting old!!! I know my stomach is healing and all that but still - I wanna chew my damn shoe. It's funny b/c I'm craving a scrambled egg and I don't even eat eggs that often. Lulu told me that she has, for the most part, lost the desire for snacking. Please God, let that happen to me!!! Oh and I weighed yesterday and am down 16.5 pounds. :mad2:

    Hungry!

3 weeks post op and eating everything in sight HELP:thumbdown:

    Hungry!

Bandster Hell is a normal part of the process for most until you get enough fills. Be careful you're not overeating as it takes at least 6 weeks for the stitches on your stomach holding the band to heal and you could cause complications. Hang in there! -BG

    Hungry!

i lost 19lbs first 2 weeks and gained 3 back i feel no restriction at all
  5. I had a fill 2 weeks ago. Of course I followed the 2,2,2, stages like normal. I struggled then and I am still struggling now to keep down anything. I have 7cc's in my band. I plan to call the doctor tomorrow, but I was curious if anyone else has experienced this?
  6. Hi all! Have just found this site and I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you. I'm asking for a bit of encouragement. I'm 10 days post op from my gastric sleeve surgery. Doing well at getting in my Protein and my fluids but I am so craving something to eat!!! I am not craving a burger or pizza - just something with a little substance. I am scheduled to go back for my first post-op appt with the nurse practitioner on 1/6 but unless they change their usual post-op plan, I will still have another 2 weeks after that of just liquids before moving to "mushy" foods. I know I can do this but it's a challenge for sure! Any suggestions are welcome. I'm still using the protein supplements that I got from the doctor presurgery and do best with the Soups. I bought some whey powder from Walmart but really don't care for the taste of it. I'm thinking I'm going to try the premade shakes and see if I like them better. I have tried the Atkins shakes in the past and liked them ok but they are more expensive. But it will be worth it if it helps me stick to the liquid phase right?
  7. My surgeon didn't suggest that slippage and erosion are the bandsters fault, however, I have time and time again read on this forum..... "I am 5 days out from surgery, I had a steak, a baked potato and an apple pie with ice cream....Do you think this is harmful to my band or is it going to stretch my pouch?" "I ate 2 double cheeseburgers and an X-Large fries and its stuck, I am in so much pain, I don't know what to do" "Hi. I have been banded for 2 days and I ate a beef chopped steak, mashed potatoes and gravy. I slipped my band and had to go back in to get it placed back, I am in so much pain for 2 surgeries in one week. I just wanted to warn everyone not to do this. I was just so hungry and didn't think that I had to stick to the liquid diet." I am paraphrasing the above quotes, however they are from actual posts that I have read here on this forum. I could list 50+ more examples of complications that were recorded on this forum that were self induced and would be happy to provide the supporting links. I would also be happy to provide links to the non patient related complications as I have those saved for future reference as well, however there are a LOT less recorded complications. Yes, there can be complications from poor placement, however as technology and experience improve in the US for lap band doctors, those cases are less and less frequent. Yes, there can be complications from just fate or your body rejecting the foreign object of the band. However, I see too many times where bandsters don't take responsiblity for their own actions. Drinking carbonated drinks CAN cause slippage. The carbonation can build up in your lower stomach, put pressure on the band and push it upwards. LOL, do you think they tell you not to drink carbonated beverages because they are unhealthy for you? It confuses me that you do not know how harmful they are to you as a bandster, hence the patient related complications. LOL. I probably won't be back to this post as I can see that my advocacy was not appreciated. I just got the "tone" from hunnybunny's post that she saw the lapband as her "end all, be all" solution for weight loss. It takes committment, hard work and is not the "easy way" out like people dream that it is. I "reckon" I came to that conclusion when all of the options for additional money to fund the lap band surgery didn't list any jobs where actual concerted "effort" would have to be put forth.
  8. I lost 30 pounds prior to my first fill and 5 between my first and 2nd. which were 5 weeks apart The first fill of 5.2 gave me no restriction. I received 2.0 yesterday. Won't know for a few days yet if I will have restriction. As I have a 9cc band I only have 1.8 left so hopefully I will get restriction soon. Greg

    Honeymoon Stage?!?!?!?!?

I am only averaging about 2 per week and that has been since the second month. I am almost five months out and have only lost 61 pounds since surgery. We are all different. I never really had a 'honeymoon' stage.

    Honeymoon Stage?!?!?!?!?

It all takes time...stick with your exercise maybe even increase and watch what you eat. Make sure your heart rate is in the fat burning zone when you work out, I use a heart rate monitor which helps me keep in the zone, its very important. Losing 2-3 lbs. a week is great. You don't want to lose it too quick.

    How long until mushies?

4 weeks after surgery I was allowed mushies, 5th week was solid food
  12. I was banded in Aug, 2011. At one year, I had lost 50 pound, which was my goal for being a year out. I have about 100 to lose, and I went into this journey knowing that the average weight loss for people with the band is 50% of their excess weight - I had decided that if I could lose 50 pounds, I was "successful". Anything more was icing on the cake (no pun intended ). About 8 weeks ago, I started to have very severe reflux at night. So bad, that it would wake me up and I would be choking. I also noticed very loud gurgling when eating or drinking and pain between my shoulder blades. I had not had a fill in approx 4 months, so it was a big surprise for me! I tried to live with it (the weight loss was great!!), but finally one night couldn't stand it. I called the surgeon on call and ended up going to the ED to have Fluid removed. After 12 hours, an xray, lab work and a resident that could not find the right needle to do the job, they removed 1cc. Immediate relief! 6 weeks later I returned to my surgeon and she decided to put back in 0.5cc. All good for a day or 2 - then BAMO - reflux, gurgling, pain... I went back and had the 0.5cc removed. Again, relief! Upper GI done and NO slip - so that was good. But also, it didn't appear that I had any restriction either! Today, she put back in 0.25cc and told me to stay on liquids for several days. Anyone else have this issue? I know the band is finicky, but I was really surprised to experience such an issue after things had been going so well. Any thoughs regarding what I could possibly be doing to cause this? Thanks!
  13. Welcome to the Loser's Bench and VST!!! I'm still a newbie (11 weeks out)... and I have to say, this was the best decision I ever made!!! Please utilize the board, you'll find a wealth of information and great people to talk to!!! Congrats again!!! Enjoy your journey!!!

    Need Dr on Long Island

Hi Kiki, 11 pounds the first week is VERy good. Don't worry it does slow down. I have had MANY slow times. Some months I have lost nothing, on average I lose about 2-4 pounds a month. It is slow but as long as it's down I am happy. I know why it is slow I don't exercise and many days I don't make the right food choices, but I love my band and feel great! Keep in touch and let me know how your doing! Welcome to the Band world!
  16. I have a "fill" apointment in 30 minutes. Don't think I will be getting a fill today. I'm feeling great, have great restriction and am down 10 pounds over the last 4 weeks. I am lovin my lap-band!
  17. Been struggling a LOT since the one year bandiversary. Last few months have been a nightmare, eating too much and even gaining back some weight. Even cancelled my last fill because I didn't want to weigh in. Then I got a bug. Started as a head cold-sinus infection and settled a couple of days in my colon. After I go well, I was eating as I had been, and suddenly had to run to the bathroom with a bite stuck. I spent about a week having a hard time eating without food getting stuck. Now I eat the way we are told, small bites and chew forever. Things are working and I've dropped the weight I had gained plus another 6 in the last 2 weeks. I'm exercising again, trying the couch to 5k. Seems really strange, like maybe my band had slipped into the wrong place and getting sick moved it back. Whatever the reason, I'm not complaining. Things are going the way I hoped when I had the surgery.
  18. I have Isopure RTD clear protein drinks that i plan on using as soon as i get home from surgery next week i dont think there is a time frame for protein drinks.
  19. Some of you know that I have been struggling for the past 6 weeks with one of those dreaded plateaus. I went to the doc for a fill and now I am 11lbs lighter. I guess I have to credit some of the weight loss to the fact that I have had the flu but hey at least it is weight loss and I am over the hump. Thanks to everyone that gave me words of encouragement.

    I need a pep talk

:think Hi everyone, Okay, so I went for my first appointment with the surgical center and everyone was terrific. The nurse, psychiatrist and nutritionist all thought I'd be a great candidate for the band. I have a goal of 8 lbs to lose in the next 6 weeks (piece of cake - well actually no more cake!) and if I do, they'll schedule the surgery. Problem is, my stupid insurance won't cover it. It's an exclusion so I'm completely out of luck. I'm going to appeal but my chances aren't good. I am thinking about taking a loan from my 401K but I feel so selfish. It will be $18000 for everything (pre-op, op, post-op and 2 fills) to get started and I don't feel right spending so much money. Part of me says "stop being weak and just try (again) to lose the weight yourself" and the other part of me says "if you want to live a long life, and see your kids grow up you HAVE to do this." I really don't know what to do. I'm so sad right now.....

    New Here

I also struggled with weight most of my life, i had the surgery on the 30th of July and am down 20 pounds, right now i am losing about 3 pounds a week but that is 3 pounds lost instead of gained and i feel WONDERFUL, remember it is a tool and not a quick fix and you have to be willing and ready,I was more then ready and am so happy I have elected to do the band and it is working well!! Good luck!!
  22. Okay, so I am about four weeks out from the surgery and doing well. I have lost 35 lbs...YAY! For the last week or so, I had lost that post-op "full" feeling and was able to eat almost anything. I wasn't eating nearly as much as I would have before the surgery but I don't think it was the band that was keeping me from overeating but more my paranoia of getting stuck and/or throwing up. Needless to say, it was time for a fill. So, at the doc's office, lie down, tighten abdomen, fluid in, no biggie. Although, I will say that I could FEEL the fluid going in which was a little weird. I told the nurse that I could already feel a difference. She asked me how it felt but I couldn't really put a word to it. She looked at me like I might be a little crazy but I'm okay with that  Stuck around the office and drank the obligatory two cups of water. Even after the water, I was feeling full. I attributed it to my having eaten a salad about an hour before my appointment. So, although I wasn't hungry, I just had "dinner" that consisted of about 1/3 cup of broth and I don't think I could have another drop. Feeling REALLY reflux-y. I don't want or need to vomit but I guess I thought I would be able to get more down. So, being new to this, I have to ask, is this normal? Is it that it is my first fill and the feeling subsides in a couple days or is this the sign of an overfill? I know everyone responds differently to the LB but any insight would be appreciated. Oh, and BTW, don't make fun of me but I have to ask.....what are PBing and sliming? I have read those words on many posts and I have no idea what they are talking about! Sliming sounds like something that happens in a show on Nickelodeon I am soooo not familiar with the jargon yet!

    Lap Band-Pseudo Tumor??

Thanks everyone for your candid and timely responses. I appreciate the insight. Although I am discouraged by the fact that most of you say weight loss does not help. I am so sad about that, since that is the only reason I got the band in the first place. I hate the effects of the drugs I am on, I need to think clearly and process information rapidly in my job and sometimes that is a huge challenge. I got off Topamax because it basically destroyed my short term memory and I feel like a big emotionless blob. Diamox Sequels are a bit better, but still make me feel like my mentation drag. It has been a long time since I had a really bad episode. The last time was over a year ago and I went to the Neuro-Ophthamologist and she refused to do an LP after I had been off work for a week puking and unable to move due to a debilitating headache. Needless to say I don't see her anymore. My PCP is willing to give me the medication I need to manage my symptoms. Thank God for small favors.

    Lap Band-Pseudo Tumor??

I am so freaked out right now in regards to this thread. In January of 2007 I was at a funeral of a really close friend and suddenly came down with the most painful headache I ever felt in my life. The headache went on non stop for another week until I finally went to the doctor and they attributed it to sinuses. The day after I went to the doctor I started having double vision and the right side of my face started to slope and my eye pretty much parked in the corner and shut half way. I went to the ER and they thought it was Bell's Palsey (which I had twice in the past) and were going to start treatment for it, but the he called Nurology and they wouldnt let me leave til he saw me. When he saw me he decided to admit me into the hospital. I was in the hospital for over a week until they came up with a disease called Tolosa Hunt Syndrome. They started me on 100 mg of steroids which immediatly opened my eye and brought it back to the normal position. Each time the Nurologist tried to wean me off the steroids my eye would start messing up again. He had me see an Opto/Nerologist and he was the one that said I had a Pseudo tumor where the orbits span out. He started me on a pill form of Chemo which is called Methotrexate and eased me off the steroids which caused me to get all the way up to 316lbs. I have been on the Methotrexate for over two years now and have no further problems with my eye. I notice what causes it to start acting up a little is when my stress volume increases or when I cry. I just thought I was alone and did not know anyone else or a support group of anyone who had it. I would love to talk more with those who have it just to get a better understanding of it.
