????A shout to the February sleevers ????
sallyomalley67 replied to ☁️9⃣B????'s topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
How is everyone doing? I went to my granddaughters' (twins) 9th bday party today and went walking. Forgot my pedometer, went home grabbed it, met my sister back at the park and walked a couple more miles! I love the energy Im finally feeling ahain!! Oh. And I attended my first bariatric support group meeting today. Missed the first one just after surgery (wasnt able to drive yet). Hit 5wks 1 day today. Down 23lbs. Slow and steady. Lol -
Biotin will NOT impact hair loss. It's a placebo effect. Bariatric surgery causes Hair loss temporarily. I cringe every day at the amounts I am losing but as a scientist I know the reasons & know it will grow back. However it is not easy to watch it fall. Hang in there everyone & focus On the Lbs falling off for now. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

I had the sleeve. I lost about 127 I gained back 25. How I handle stress lately varies. Sometimes eating, sometimes drinking sometimes working tour I don’t hate exercising I love it. Never gave that up. I don’t have a bariatric buddy to face time with or spend time with

I have not, but have had good luck with Bariatric Choice at this web site: http://www.bariatricchoice.com/ I used their chewable vitamins, hot chocolate mix, crispy treats, etc. Good luck!

My doctor says that gastric banding is a waste of time.
BrownEyes82 replied to tljohan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As most have said, there are pro's and con's. The most recent statistics actually show that up to 60% of banded patients choose to have their band removed or convert to a gastric sleeve within 10 years of the original procedure. I was well aware of this before I chose the band. Unfortunately people see that 60% and assume there must be something wrong with the band or procedure - but it's actually what's wrong with the patient. WAY too many people think they will get the surgery and they will be skinny and it will be easy. They don't truly prepare themselves for the way their life is going to have to change - just having the surgery won't fix everything, you have to be committed to making changes for the rest of your life. Additionally, there is no "long-term" data on gastric sleeves to compare to this. In order for medical studies to include legit long-term data, they must have ten years worth of documentation and the gastric sleeve is still too "new" to offer this kind of information. This means we don't really know what is going to happen 10 years down the line and if they might need a further procedure. While the sleeve might offer faster and more significant weight loss, it also offers the potential of much more severe complications. I'm a nurse and the hospital I work at is a certified bariatric procedure - the vast majority of our patients on the surgical floor are bariatric patients, and a good chunk of those are patients admitted for complications after sleeve or bypass. The thought of having a gastric leak and the infections and problems that can arise from that (and what I've seen from that!) terrify me. Yes, there is potential for complications from all procedures, but the lap band has the lowest risk. Knowing all of this, doing all of my research, I knew I wanted to do the procedure with the overall LEAST risk for me and something that I could still be in control. I chose to go through with the band and had my surgery last week. I know this will HELP me lose weight - but that's just it, this is a TOOL to HELP me. It's not the solution. My behavior and lifestyle changes are the solution. Until every single person being banded has that mindset, there's no way it can have a 100% success rate. Like everyone has said, do your research and get another opinion - but know yourself and what changes your CAN and are willing to make. Best of luck to you!! -
My doctor says that gastric banding is a waste of time.
tljohan posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have just started my new weight loss journey. Like many others, I have a history of failed diets and temporary weight loss. Several years ago, I managed to lose 70 lbs in one year using traditional methods such as exercising 6 days a week, eating one small meal a day and taking prescription diet pills. I ended up looking great except for the hair thinning, heart palpations and tachycardia and the loss of 3 teeth and gum disease. Starvation is not a good plan so I started eating 3 meals again. I only kept it off for a short while and within a year it was all back plus 30 lbs more. I now weigh more than I ever imagined I could ever weigh. I am pre-diabetic, borderline hypertension, borderline hyperlipidemia, have probable sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and severe GERD. I am way overdue for a lifestyle change but I need help. I had a consultation with a weight management doctor last week. He recommended bariatric surgery right off the bat. He suggested I have the gastric sleeve procedure. My insurance will not pay for it so he then recommended gastric bypass surgery or gastric banding. My insurance will pay for either one. He told me that he felt that the Lap-Band is a waste of time and that most of his patients end up having it removed. He recommended that I have the gastric bypass surgery. He has a stellar reputation as a bariatric surgeon. BUT..... Here is the problem: I do not want any part of my body cut off or re-routed. I do not want my intestines altered in any way as I have enough trouble with them as it is. I do not want my digestive system altered and suffer the effects of mal-absorption. Before I had the consultation with a bariatric surgeon, I had already decided I wanted the Lap-Band to use as a tool to help me lose the weight in a healthy way. So, why are some doctors now saying that it is a waste of time??? Is it really true? What to do now? I am more confused and frustrated as ever. -
I've had several colonoscopies through the years--this is just the first after my RNY. I probably should call my bariatric surgeon's office to see if there is anything in the prep peculiar to bypass patients. Izucks, the prep sheet I have has the same directions as the one you posted.

I NEED THIS SURGERY

Ultimate Bariatrics -Dr Adam Smith and team. SELF PAY SLEEVE- $11k -
I've really been struggling for the last 2-3 weeks. I had RNY on May 11/15. As of today I am 178 lbs, down from 250 lbs (72 lbs). At 5 & 1/2 months out I feel I should have lost a little more. My weight loss has been quite slow since about the beginning of August. Today I finally came out of a 3 week stall. However, I know that the slowed weight loss is entirely my doing. My appetite has definitely returned and I have been making bad choices quite regularly over the last month or so. I do fairly well during the day, although I have had a slice of pizza more often than I should. However, it's mainly the evenings that are my downfall. After the kids are in bed and chores are done I end up snacking and the Snacks have changed from veggies & fruit to chips, pretzels, popcorn...anything salty and crunchy! I know it's not wise and everyday I tell myself today I won't succumb to the cravings...but I really feel like I'm losing the battle. I truly don't want to screw this up but it's so hard! I've recently joined a gym and have a personal trainer who requires that I keep a food journal but even that doesn't seem to be helping! I am due to see my nutritionist as well as the bariatric centre's psychologist in a couple of weeks and I'm hoping that they will have some support and tools to offer. I just don't know how to wire my brain to keep the motivation. Feeling so down.

LAP BAND NOT SUCCESSFUL????according to gastric bypassers. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FDATrialGuineaPig replied to jOANNE's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I always find it interesting when they tout how unsuccessful the Lapband is yet they ignore the statistic that at 5 years the average weight loss with the RNY is 50% of excess weight loss. Yep, 50%. There are plenty of RNYers who are thrilled with the band as a choice but for their own reasons decided against is. Not a biggie. But there are others out there who are poorly educated and refuse to acnknowledge that they have no real information about banding, only hearsay and conjecture. It's a very american attitude to sway towards the solution offering instant gratification. Myself, I prefer to look 5, 10, 15 years down the road at where I could end up with either surgery. I personally chose the less invasive route that was not going to compromise my absorption over the long term and that is ADJUSTABLE. The majority of RNYers screaming that loudly are either preop, newly postop or under 2 years postop (really--take a good look at who is spewing this stuff). The FACTS are you can gain ALL YOUR WEIGHT back with ANY bariatric surgery if you're motivated enough. There are groups on yahoogroups with several thousand people who are struggling with this post-RNY issue. Groups like OSSG-hungry come to mind. With all of the surgeries permanent behavioral changes are neccessary to sustain success. There is no magical solution. And honestly? I think for some people it makes them angry to have struggled so hard to come to terms with the RNY--the risks, the extremeness of it, and then to learn about banding. It's a much safer mental place to be in to convince yourself it "doesn't work". Therefore you don't have to acknowledge that you could have made a different decision. Insurances are coming around to covering banding, but for goodness sakes it was only just approved by the FDA two years ago! It's a relatively new procedure and it takes time to convince insurance companies to cover it. How quickly people forget that roughly five years ago it was almost impossible to ge them to cover bypasses. Use your common sense and do your own research. And most importantly--when you read an OPINION take into the consideration where the poster is in their journey and that they may have personal biases. Oh--and by the way I was very successful with the band . -
Hi Melissa, My fills have never been done in the hospital... always in my Doc's office. I think if the fills are approached slowly there is little reason to do them under flouro. Private pay cost for a fill with my surgeon runs 200.00. The bariatric surgeons here where I live charge 75.00 per fill and they also include 1 years worth of fills with the surgery. I don't think there should have been 2 charges in regards to the radiology. How experienced is your surgeon in regards to placing and caring for the Lap Band? Don't fret yet about not feeling the restriction... it is not unsual for the fill to "kick in" a few weeks down the road. All in all... I still think that banding is the best option for bariatric surgery... once you have restriction you will have the help you need for controlling food intake. Don't be afraid to express your concerns to your surgeon... and perhaps even ask why they feel it is necessary to do the fills in the hospital with radiology assist. Darcy

Fill Doctors in Austin TX not affiliated with Southwest Bariatrics
made1977 replied to lakewaylady10's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was banded in Mexico. Dr. Patel with Texas Bariatric Specialists has a location there in Austin. I go to him here in San Antonio. He is awesome and very knowledgeable. He did my first fill with no problems at all. Here is the link. Weight Loss Surgery San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Corpus Christi - Texas Bariatric Specialists Good Luck Marion -
I didn't have that problem but it was mentioned before I left the hospital. The bariatric nurse warned me to expect the unexpected when it comes to BM's. She said some will experience constipation, some won't. I had the liquids in, liquids out, problem. Mention it to your surgeon but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Your intestinal system is going through a lot of changes. Hope you feel better soon!

Should I get another Fill?
Jennifer44 replied to Jennifer44's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am going to see the nutrionist in two weeks and avoid another fill until October. I have to learn how to change my behavior around food. I just started seeing a bariatric psychologist and she is good. I have my third session this Saturday. She suggested I start exercising..........I will go tonight to the gym. I just hope I can start losing 1-2 pounds a week and get out of this plateau.......journaling and exercise will help!!!! -

Please help -- Scary Port Pain While Exercising
make33 replied to Xann77's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I experienced a lot of pain doing the leg press surprisingly enough (Didn't realize I use my abs for that too)! When I asked the surgeon, he said he had sewn my port into the abdominal muscles and the pulling is what would cause me the pain. Others here say their surgeon didn't sew down their port (?) but I would definitely say all the sit ups could be aggravating it. One idea would be to lay off those for a week for two and see if you still have pain running and on the eliptical. If so, I may be tempted to call my Bariatric Center and see what they have to say... -

Also, this can happen anywhere...I'm not blaming Mexico....but it's a good warning for folks to remember that they really need to line up post surgical support at home. If you feel like something might be wrong, don't wait. Get treatment promptly. https://www.abc15.com/news/region-phoenix-metro/bariatric-surgery-in-mexico-turns-deadly-for-phoenix-woman -
I understand where your coming from because I was at a Bariatric Support group last night and had to hear numerous people bash the band. You need to realize that this is for you and no one else. Everyone has an opinion its up to you to search within yourself and determine if this is for you. I have been overweight all my life and really had no support for my decision but I went through with it and have no regrets. The good thing about the band is it is reversable and they can take it out, but with the Gastric Bypass that is not an option. I want you to focus on you and your choice and try to close your ears to everyone not supporting you. before classes 06/24/07 316lbs. banded 01/24/08 292lbs. current 06/11/08 251.5

Surgery is 3 days and a wakeup away! I am staring to think more and more about it of course. On my liquids I have lost 13.5 pounds. I have "cheated" though and the guilt is killing me. I am not hungry, stomach wise, but my mental hunger is still there. Please tell me someone understands that. I am used to eating even when I am not hungry. This battle is going to be mostly mental for me anyway. I am spending time this week making homemade Soups and pureeing them, then freezing them. I hate how much sodium store bought soups have. I am going to be making homemade popsicles today and homemade chicken broth so I should be set. I haven't had the surgery yet, obviously, but I scared to death of my first fill. My doc does mainly bypasses and sleeves but since he is an insurance provider that is where I needed to go. He does first fills at 2 weeks post op and I am worried about it. We live 3 hours one way away from the doc so I can't just come back in a few days or so if he tries and it doesn't work...especially not with gas prices :-)! The bad thing is walking around WalMart last night is I saw a lot of people just like me, morbidly obese. It is so sad to me that this surgery isn't easier for people to get if they need it. Seeing those folks renewed my wanting to do this. I want to be healthier and I want to look better :tongue2:. My hubby was helping me take off my bra last night cause it was hurting so bad on my shoulders, he saw the bruises the straps had caused and he just said, you need this surgery, you are going to feel so much better very soon. He is a sweetie, said what I needed to hear! Laura

My band is great and has changed my life .......
Kimber-lilly replied to jillrn's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
i LOVE MY BAND AND IT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE BECAUSE....... it has made me feel NORMAL about food. I am able to do what I want, instead of censoring my activities according to who will see me, etc......I don't care about stuff that doesn't matter anymore--I literally only sweat the BIG stuff. I feel renewed, have more energy, sleep better, laugh more. I feel like I can be seen for who I really am, instead of a physical image that didn't match what was inside. -
Has anyone been following the upheaval on "The View?" It appears Star Jones/Reynolds is history and upstaged Barbara Walters by announcing her departure without warning. Star went to "People" magazine and told her version of the story forcing Barbara to make a public announcement on the show and deciding not to have Star return to work out the remainder of her contract. Barbara provided Star the opportunity to become a star and kept her employed for 9 years. Star's contract was not being renewed and ABC said Star could state whatever reason she wanted to for leaving and they would back her up. I think Star's actions were juvenile and a slap in the face to Barbara Walters. She might have been ticked and felt that Rosie O'Donnell was the causative factor in her contract not being renewed but she lacked grace in departing with dignity. OK, I know many of you will disagree with me but it's good to get different points of view... pun intended. LOL.
-
I watched the Larry King interview last night and I listened to what she had to say and I have kind of hopped the fence and gone a little towards her side. First of all, she found out about the executive producers not renewing her contract from her husband through her agents and managers, not form Barbara or Bill. That was not cool to me...as closely as she had worked with Barbara Walters I thought she would have found out from her...I would have wanted it that way. Then, she knew about this since 04-21-06 and she was still a professional everyday and never let it be known that she wasn't renewed in her contract on air. And then I guess what drove her to finally crack and say something on Tuesday instead of Thursday like they planned was the way it was becoming a media circus outside her home and she didn't want it to be that way. Would you? She is an attorney, first and foremost and she knows that she can screw herself by going on national TV and lying...so why would she. And as far as her weightloss, everyone knows how personal it can be and yes she is a celebrity but she is still a person with feelings. So she didn't come out and say..."I had WLS!!!" But she did say that she had 'medical intervention' and anyone with a brain knows what that means. But at the end of the day, what does it really matter and who is it hurting. So what, she had it, she lost the weight and is probably healthier now than she was before and I hope that she can go on with her life and be 'healthy'...to me that is all that matters. All this other BS is just a bump in the road of being a celebrity. Everyone has their own opinion and this is mine. Agree or disagree. Life is too short to worry about what other people think, you pick up and move on and i think that is what she is trying to do.

Post op experiences and support
general_antiope replied to can_do's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I like the visualizations part. Do you mean how you're going to handle surprise donuts/goodies at work? Going out to eat? That sounds VERY smart! I agree it's great to have the support. It's hard being alone. Do you have a support group that your bariatric center offers? Some places have monthly real life meet ups with other banded folks. My doc is in NY and I'm in Philly so I can't take advantage of this. I think it harmed me the first time around being banded...had I had support groups to attend, I might have known I had a leak sooner than I did and lost all my weight, not just most of it. oh this you have to share, when you hit the milestone!!
