post op photos seem alien to me...I'm going a bit bonkers
James Marusek replied to AlbaGuBrath's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and the weight fell off fairly rapidly. I transitioned from the Weight Loss phase into the Maintenance phase at around 7 months. Sleeve patients lose weight at a slower pace but they lose weight over a longer period of time, sometimes 2 years, and can achieve almost the same weight loss as RNY patients. Even though I lost weight rapidly, it was not a shock. Some people no longer recognized me. It is good to take a good before photograph so that you have something to compare it with after surgery. Many people do not see how obese they really are. I never appeared in photographs because I was the photographer in the family. When I looked in a mirror, it was alway straight on. The problem is that many people do not see how obese they really are and after surgery do not see how much weight they really lost. So in my case I took a before photo and a 6 month after photo. I tried to strike the same pose so it was a good one to one comparison. Here is the photo. -
When do you get rid of clothes?
Deemar007 replied to Krestel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got rid of all my old clothes. I do not plan on going back. I can wear a size 4 now. However, I will not expect to stay that size. So I will keep the siz 8 to 10. I lost enough in case I gain the 20 pound average at year three. I am 26 months out. -
I am actually wondering if it was right for me or not. I'm 2 1/2 months post-op, eating between 800-1200 calories a day, 2 fills in with 5cc's in my 10cc band, and have continued to gain and lose the same 2-3 pounds for the last month. I have started to do some mild exercise, which is big for me since I hate exercising. But I have come to realize that calorie deficiency alone is not going to do it for me. But...with that said, I am frustrated, confused and over all, wondering if this is going to work for me.

8 Years later- back to the basics
JOANNE M HOLL replied to BackInTheSaddle's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I think this forum is where I will add my 2 cents into the conversation. I had had my band placed in 2006 and did very well until my mammogram showed breast cancer in 2012. Then I had the saline withdrawn from my band before my cancer operation. I am now "cancer free" and have been living with the band and trying to lose with no fill. The winter months went well but when spring arrived and all the outdoor activities boosted my appetite! I've gained too fast and would like to get back on my band wagon. It is soooo hard, now I'm going to have to ask for a refill, I guess. -
Hi, Has anyone had the Life style Lift? that they show on tv. Or have you sent away for the info. I feel like I need to do something even though I need to lose more weight. I think being 62 is the reason the face has sags. Thanks for the help.

Surgery Date SET!
mightyschratt replied to mightyschratt's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I went into my two week pre-op weighing 311.4 and lost down to 297.8 by the day of surgery. I was very excited for my new journey, but never expected to feel as bad as I did post-op. Sept 8th 2014 was the day! I felt terrible once awake. Horrible nausea that nothing would get rid of, vomiting, chest pain, and dizziness... I hope you all have a better time with this. My chest hurt so bad they called in the cardiologists to run tests! I ended up with round the clock labs being drawn, anti-nausea meds and pain meds being given like clockwork! Nothing seemed to help the chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, stomach spasms, gas etc! I couldn't urinate, couldn't pass gas, nor would my bowels move. I spent 48hrs in tears due to the overwhelming pain. I couldn't even keep down my ice chips on day two! By the 3rd day I started to feel a little better. The first 2 were the worst! The gas that they fill your abdominal cavity up with was a ruthless butch! The gas can't escape, so it just sits there and causes horrible, unimaginable pain. They finally gave me some morphine and Ativan to knock me out, and it was oh so sweet relief too! I was finally able to fall asleep, and ignore the pain even if it was only for a minute or two. On the third day the dizziness was very present, but everything else was clearing up. I actually felt like getting up, showering, and walking the halls by day 3. I wasn't sure how'd I'd feel once they removed the pain pump from my abdomen, but I found out by the end of day 3. Once they removed nearly 12 inches of pump cord from inside my chest cavity I began to feel the numbing sensation wear off. It became all too real that someone took a blade and sliced me 7 times with it. Not just scratching the surface but rearranging my internal organs. By discharge time on day 3 I finally was able to pass gas! I was so bloated, and fluid-logged due to the non-stop IV fluids, medications, antibiotics, etc! I walked out of the hospital weighing 305; I went in at 297.8! I didn't have a bowel movement until day 4, with the aid of a little laxative. I didn't want to risk C.Diff.! Today is day 5 post-op and I've finally gotten the hospital water weight off! This morning I hit 296.0 on the scale! I'm still very sore, but I couldn't be happier about my new life that is now within reach! -
Kicking butt and taking names (*shameless bragging alert*)
Tate777 posted a topic in Fitness & Exercise
I was sleeved 1/27. I have been exercising since day 3....started out with short, slow walks and just gradually added activity. I bought and am using a fibit Force (LOVE IT) and I have my first session with a personal trainer tomorrow after work. I am working out every day for about 60 mins-- 2 days weights, 2 days 90 min of hot yoga, 3 days 60 min or more of cardio. I have lost 21 pounds in 4 weeks. i have hope for the first time in a long time I might get back to the fit person I was about 6 years ago before I stopped exercising and ate my way up to 300 pounds. I am feeling really good about myself-- I LOVE exercise and I am excited to do more things (like kickboxing and racketball) as I lose more and gain mobility/reduce risk of injury!! I AM EXCITED!!! -
I just need to get this off of my chest. I hate working with most other women. All the drama, the back stabbing, the competition with clothes, jewelry so on. I work in a small lab with one other woman who I get along with quite well. We have similar likes and dislikes and are the same age. Recently a job was posted in our area that sounded a lot like my job. I inquired about the job and got no response for over two weeks. Finally, when I did get an interview for my own job it appeared it was only a formality. The new HR woman who does not like me for who knows what reason had already hand selected a new young girl with no experience to take the job. Naturally, I protesed loudly. I wound up with the job, raise, and this new girl to help me. This sounds good, but the girl is not only a tattle tail, she is a shark in the Water. She has already started telling stories about me to other people and has tried to get a married engineer she has been sleeping with fired. I do not carry much weight in our company and nepotism and cronyism is a real problem. I normally like to fly under the radar, but feel I wiil need to keep my eyes and ears on this girl at all times. I just do not have time for all of this crap in my life. I simply want to do my job to the best of my ability and go home. I hate playing games and despise back stabbers. Any advice on how to handle this new very pretty very young and very threating girl will be appreciated.

How to get a new body image as you loose the weight
vlp1968 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My psychologist that is part of my lapband surgery team gave me some great advice. She said to take a picture of myself once a month to see the progress. I do it in my bathing suit. She also said to keep one "fat" outfit to see how far you have come. I also spend a little time naked in front of the mirror (that came from dr. phil). Any other ideas for getting used to your new body? -
I have BCBSTX. I had to have BMI or 40 or greater with no comorbidities or 35 or greater with two. A five year weight history, a visit with a nutritionist, a physc evaluation, an endoscopy, and an EKG. This was in 2013, though.

Don't be scared just try and measure your food. Try not to eat more than 1cup. And make sure you go walking..excersise! Get up and get moving! You need to visualize yourself thinner and healthier! Try and think POSITIVE! You deserve this! I had my surgery on 9/23. I have lost 15lbs. Although I am happy with my weight loss, and feel soo much better already, I, like everbody else, wish the weight would come off quicker. I can tell the inches are coming off because I work out. I am not focusing on the number but more on how I feel, and the size of my clothes. The inches are coming off.. I know because I now wear a size 16/18 instead of a 20/22. I have my first fill on 11-9-09. From what I understand the restriction/weight loss starts after that. I am thankful because it is right before this dreaded "food holiday!" Good luck to you!

Newbie- 3 day post op gastric sleeve
LindafromFlorida replied to tabby76's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Try drinking liquids that are room temperature if the cold bothers you. Post op for 4 weeks we stuck to broth, FF soup, yogurt, pureed foods, and shakes. At 4 weeks I tried a small piece of soft chicken, choked on it, and stayed on soft food another 2 weeks. Bad experience. Try a different brand of protein shake. My husband liked Bariatric Advantage (milky tasting) and I liked EAS powder from Walmart. The best advice we got from our surgeon was: Do not eat 3 meals a day. Do not eat if you are not hungry. Even today, 7 months post surgery, we eat only when hungry, and we don't have sit down dinners at any certain time.

Right after surgery especially, and still today, burping signalled we had eaten enough. Wonderful little reminder lol. Usually if you eat a small amount, you can walk away and be satisfied. Everyone is different with their weight loss, we have learned that well here. The soreness from the small incisions won't last long, we never needed any pain medicine after 24 hours in the hospital. Good luck!!!! -
So I am 3 days out from my sleeve and have a few questions: Did anyone else have spasms after drinking liquids, especially cold liquids? The protein shakes that I loved before surgery are now repulsive. I tried yogurt this morning and did okay with it, what did everyone's immediate post op diet consist of? No one has told me how much I should be 'eating' at one time, does anyone know? How much weight did you lose your first few weeks post op? How long were you sore from your larger incision? I had 5 incisions, one of them larger which is the most tender.

Stopped losing one month post VSG
catwoman7 replied to Sonar214's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
pretty much everyone has their first stall within the first month after surgery. It's so common it has a name - the three week stall (although it's not always the third week). Search the three week stall - you'll find hundreds of posts about it. Just stick to your plan, and the weight loss will start up again. -
Insulin resistance and skin darkening
KristenLe replied to Lema's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think the skin discoloration is related to PCOS - but don't remember for sure. Hopefully as symptoms of PCOS diminish with weight loss so will the discoloration. -
I have been very careful not to eat Pasta, and I slipped. You are probably right, but I am so afraid that I will do something to sabotage myself and gain weight back. I have been on too many diets, too many times, and always gained the weight back, and more. Thank you so much, for setting me straight. I appreciate your words. Edie

Advice to be supportive?
BryBro63 replied to ItsPronounced_Abear's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think it's a great thing you're doing!! I'm sure she'll be that much more successful with such a supportive friend as you!!! Right now I'm sure what she needs the most is your company and your motivating moral support. At first with many of us, we get that 'buyer's remorse' feeling, wondering if we did the right thing...this is where she may need to lean on you for a bit. Once she starts feeling better and the weight starts dropping, that feeling quickly fades, and then on to success!! With you by her side, I'm sure she will indeed be quite successful!! -
Ok,I am so glad everyone is so pumped up,But 95% of us all will gain your weight back and more .Im sure this will taken down,I nwas 279 in 2000 and bam in 6 months do ing the same routine I have picked up 60 pounds in 3mo.Dr doesn't know why,Still have my little pouch ,I am sure this will not be shared with you all.Just Saying

Ok I've lost like 110#'s but so afraid of regaining I only eat protein and very, very little carbs but I feel I can't loose anymore I'm at a stand still it feels like if I defer from protein AT all I gain 2 or 3 pounds and then I feel very bad I'm taking milk of magnesia every day or every other day yes because of constipation but also tying to make sure of not gaining any suggestions? Oh yea I'm post surgery a year and 3 months

I know that must have been scary. Use these 6 mos to take care of yourself and let your stomach heal. I'll bet that a lot of the things you have learned since 8/07 will stick with you and you'll do better than you think without the band. You've got a great jumpstart on the weight loss, just keep up that momentum. As you can see I also used Dr. Smith. Were you happy with the way he handled your emergency situation, and was he able to determine why this happened to you? Good luck.

Somebody? ANYBODY? Are my calories too high?
gamergirl replied to outwithbenjiboi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think your calories are too high. I'm 5'6 and started at 230. Am now 191 and I am eating about that many. Depending in your height and weight that may be too few. Can you share those stats? Sent from my iPhone using VST -
Just wanted to congratulate you on your tremendous weight loss so far especially as you haven't yet met your sweet spot!! It is a fabulous journey you are on and it will have it's ups and downs but the ups far out weigh the downs just as long as you remember that the band is there to help you do the hard work....like digging the garden - you try doing it without a spade...the band is your spade!!! Well done and keep us updated with your progress!!
-
Book chick, You're doing the hard part now. You've decided, you've paid, you've done it and the band...still hasn't actually started to work. At eight weeks out, your band should be healed into place. You should be able to eat most anything. There is no reason on earth you should be losing even a pound, because you have no restriction. You are normal. Not losing during this stage is normal. Gaining back some of the post-op weight loss is normal. Over-reacting during this periosd is textbook normal...which begs the question...so, why no fill? Sue

I am 8 weeks (give or take) post op- no fill yet- how much should I be eating? I'm not eating nearly as much as I was pre-op, but more than I think I should! Am I stretching out my pouch? How can I know? I was losing weight but have actually gained a couple of pounds back. Is this normal? Am I overreacting? HELP!!
