Sorry that this has happened. I know when i started my process i went to my PCP to have her start the 6 month documented diet only to realize that she was not the best person to follow me given she hardly recorded anything and I found out the surgeons office would need more info. So, I started over with the bariatric center of excellence that my insurance company recommended. Thankfully i was only one month into the process. I got much better guidance working with the nutritionist, physcologist and bariatric nurses and doctors in that 6 months. It set me up for success.

I do all liquid vitamins from Wellese. I'm on Multi Vitamin, Iron, Vitamin B 12 and Calcium with Vitamin D. Absolutely Love them, beats eating chalk, I would gag on the Calcium Lozenges. From Bariatric Advantage, I couldn't do it anymore.

Vitamin supplements are not as bioavailable as getting the vitamins through food.... You're not eating much food lately.... And I haven't been told to take any special vitamins per se, just "one a day" from the drugstore.... So I don't think you NEED to take special Bariatric vitamins. I am with you soooooooo much on hating to take them tho. My surgeon asked me if I'm getting my vitamins every day and I'm like "I um... I average taking them about 4.5 out of seven days. I am trying." He gave me a look and said to take them every day.... I couldn't take prenatals when pregnant (they made me nauseated), I couldn't stomach them when breastfeeding ('til now, and Baby is almost 1.5 yrs)..... I TRY. But they're gross and my stomach turns, especially with Iron supplements (which I KNOW I need)..... YUCK!! So I get a week where I take them every day and then I forget a day and then I take them three days then forget another day..... And overall I'd say 4.5/7 is my average for the last 2 months. I got a bunch of pill keepers and sorted out daily doses of vitamins for a month and I carry those little carriers around with me, and I try to remember to take them with my morning meds... -
Hi all! I'm new here. I'm 24, 5"2 and weigh 267 pounds. Ive been researching VSG and other bariatric surgeries for some time now, and it looks like the Sleeve would be the best choice for me. My family is trying to talk me out of it based on the fact that my mother a lot of complications after her gastric in 2001. My dad says "You two have the same genes, you will have complications too and you will regret it." Part of me is afraid that I will regret my decision. I'd like to hear from as many people as possible that have had VSG! Do you have any regrets whatsoever? Any complications? Would you recommend it to other people? What advice would you give someone that's going to have it? Thank you in advance!

MY DOCTOR WAS SO DISCOURAGING
ameteorsink replied to taweedeegirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Kaiser in Southern California and my PCP was VERY unsupportive! All I needed from her was a referral to the Health Ed dept and the Bariatric program takes over from there. Don't let the first DR discourage you! She's obviously closeminded and shouldn't be in a field where she helps people!! -

mrsgriffin2u replied to bonnn39's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
every insurance company is different as far as what is required. are you going through your insurance or self-pay? my insurance requires a letter of medical necessity from my PCP, 6 month weight-loss monitored program through PCP, surgeon consult, lap-band seminar, nutritionist consult, and psyc consult. i've done all but the psyc b/c it's hard to find one who does bariatric consultations. i finally found one yesterday and i'm scheduled for next week. i'm nervous though b/c i'm afraid they're going to find a crazy gene or something! right now i'm taking phentermine briefly before surgery to help with pre-op weight loss. i'm also trying to get the nerves to start these Protein Shakes. i hate milkshakes, so i really will have these... i love smoothies though so i'm going to try to make those instead. -

Hello! Another Iowan! (I'm a western Illinois transplant...). I had my surgery in Davenport at Genesis (can never remember if it's east or west) by Dr. Matthew Christophersen, also a bariatric center of excellence. Good luck at your meeting! -
Hey ladies, I discovered a really wonderful and unexpected side effect of surgery. I used to get horrific PMS cramps. The entire week before my period was me using machines, pain killers, hot baths, heating pads-anything and everything to stop the pain. I saw dozens of doctors and they all didn't know what to do. Sometimes it would be so bad I would be feverish and couldn't even go to work. Post surgery this stopped. I now get very minor pain that a painkiller can stop. If I had known that bariatric surgery could stop this I would have done the surgery years ago. I'm just wondering if anyone else experienced this?

Does Anyone Else Feel Like This..?
Arts137 replied to meaganchuckran's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
We all have such great (and "last ditch") hopes for this surgery. None of us would have chosen major surgery if we could have lost (and maintained) weight loss with diet. Physically the sleeve is a fine tool. Follow your program and heal from surgery. Get your Water in, then focus on Protein... Emotionally, however, the sleeve does NOT 'fix' you. And we all have fat brains. You MUST commit to a forever lifetime/lifestyle change and change your relationship with food. THIS IS HARD for each and every one of us. But with control of your fat brain, the sleeve cannot fail. Without control of our fat brains, I do not believe that the sleeve can ever work. Here's something that might also help: http://www.weightlosssurgeon.com/old/bariatric-surgery-guide/a-new-way-of-thinking/emotional-issues -

Surgeon disappointed in weight loss / Bandsters a Dying Breed?
A New Woman replied to A New Woman's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I did the psych eval and saw a nut before and in the beginning after being banded. I am not 100% on my food choices. Sometimes I'm excellent; sometimes not. But I am well aware of the choices I make when I eat and am accountable to my choices. I do exercise regularly too. I do zumba, kickboxing, walk at least 2 miles and do my Wii. I have made so many positive lifestyle changes over the last year and I 100% follow the band rules about eating/drinking, etc. What I think is odd with his attitude was initially I was told it would probably take me about a year and a half to reach my goal. They actually considered me "skinny" compared to other patients since I "only" had to lose 100 lbs. so I was told it might not be as fast for me. My bariatric nurse often says "it's a marathon, not a sprint." So why in the world would my surgeon make me feel like I'm a failure? I truly think it's all about his "stats" and I'm bringing down his success rate. He told me to come back in 6 months and I tried to get some positive encouragement out of him when I was leaving and I said "well, maybe by then we can start talking about a tummy tuck" and he basically said in a derisive voice, "well you have to lose another 50 lbs." as if it wasn't even a goal to shoot for in the next 6 months. It was just plain weird. I was the last patient of th day, I think. I think he was in a "mood" and I got all his frustrations. -
What do you think of these pre-op shake brands?

Bariatric advantage is the best. It tastes great, no grit and you can add one stevia to sweeten. Also I use almond milk to make it with. Hope this helps -
Share Your New Year’s Resolutions!
skinnyrita replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The focus of 2016 for me will continue to be centered on my health and weight loss journey. I plan to reach my goal weight by my birthday in March, but even if I don't I will continue my eating plan. I'm a bit of a foodie and love good food and wine but now realize that alcohol may need to drop off the menu along with the recreation of trying out new restaurants. My husband wanted to take me out for a big New Year's Eve dinner at a highly acclaimed restaurant, but when I saw the menu I realized I would be overeating ( several courses were being served) and over drinking. I didn't want to feel the regret of going off my plan and trying to eat all that food or the sting of him paying for food / wine I can't eat / drink. We opted for a fun evening with friends and I was able to take a few healthy appetizers for their buffet. Their celebration was alcohol- free. Surprisingly, neither one of us felt deprived and we had a great time. Even though this is sort of unrelated, I have been the recipient of some of my mom's estate - antiques and household items. Although I really love her, I'm not an antique kind of person contemporary and minimalist is more my style. The realization came that all stuff has been in my garage and storage for about 5 years, cluttering my space with its physical and emotional weight and costing extra money to store. My resolution is to find a way to let go of her things ( keeping the great memories of course) and lose the burden that having it entails. Having surgery has helped me to become lighter in so many ways that I cannot imagine the act of divesting myself of all the stuff I've been holding onto will not further enhance my journey going forward. So many things about having VSG have come as a surprise. I'm looking forward to more NSVs, optimizing my health and helping my hubby as he begins to lose weight too. Looks like we're off to a good start????????????????Happy New Year and wishes for your success to all my Bariatric Pals! -

MEXICO SLEEVERS?
SleevelessinSeattle replied to rollargirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am going to Tijuana and have heard the Marriott there is very nice. But i think going to Puerto Vallarta or Cancun would provide a more interesting experience for your friend. I also learned that a lot of the bariatric doctors practice medicine in more than one place. Tijuana is just convenient and MiHospital is located only 3 blocks from the border. I think that's why you hear so much about surgery in that area. -

In Edmonton Alberta in the Edmonton bariatric program.started doing the required modules over a year ago and I have completed them. Started seeing Nurse, dietician , internist and psychiatrist in June and they are telling me I am probably 9 months away from seeing the surgeon and then another at least 9 months before surgery. I have been very diligent and do everything they ask me to and still this is going to be a 3 year process and I am not waiting any longer I am going to go and pay for my own surgery. 18,000$ is a reasonable price to pay for my health. -
I've liked all of the Muscle Milk I've tried....cake batter, red velvet cake, banana cream and strawberry cream. Premier Protein chocolate is probably my favorite chocolate. I also like premier strawberry, but the vanilla is not my favorite. I like it as creamer in my coffee and tea, but not to just drink plain. Syntrax nectar cherry, lemonade, peach and apple are great summertime Protein drinks. Syntrax matrix vanilla is my goto vanilla. Garden of Life Raw Protein chai and vanilla are both good. I also add fruit and Torani syrups to my shakes for more variety. I did not like isopure grape or fruit punch...they were the only things that ever made me gag. Didn't like optimum nutrition vanilla ice cream and Not really a fan of the Jay Robb whey or egg flavors, except Piña colada. But you're right, there are so many different ones out there. You can get samples of dozens of different powders from Nashua Nutrition. Since I have a Protein shake everyday (even a year out) I just ordered a bunch to try some new flavors and so far the Bariatric fusion mint chocolate was a big thumbs down. I'll just stick with premier chocolate with peppermint Torani syrup.

Thank you all for responding it feels wonderful to know there are people out there I can talk to about the feelings I am experiencing and the hurdles I am putting up myself by binge eating. I don't have any close friends to speak to about any of this as the majority of my friends are at a very healthy weight. I am not comfortable talking to them about any of this in fact non of my good friends even know that I have been on this journey with the bariatric weight loss clinic for over a year now. I just told my daughter's about this process last week and they do not understand why I can't just "diet and exercise". I have made myself a promise this morning that when I want to eat a big bag of junk food that I will #1 NOT BUY IT and #2 sign onto this site for support. Did any of you experience slight allergies when you were heavy? I have found that in the past 2 years I feel a kind of shortness of breath and my nose is plugged. I am not sure but I think I may also have a gluten sensitivity which I completely ignore as well. I need to take care of ME for once and put on my big girl panties and be strong and vigilant and start getting healthy! Love and Light to all that read this and post a comment to help me through this process!!! -
Why is having surgery in Mexico such a taboo subject?
Cococat replied to jjinWA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We live in a litigious society. People will sue. Doctors have the right to protect themselves and their practices, or they might have no career. They have to follow the rules that a hospital has or they will not be able to practice there. Sometimes that entails not taking on follow-up care from surgery performed in another country, so, ACCEPT IT. You sound as if you are >entitled< to any bariatric surgeon taking you on as a patient. You would not risk your job, career, reputation or your financial solvency. Why do you expect a surgeon to fulfill your desires, yet risk his. As far as your saying, "This is great to hear that not all doctors and hospitals have a $$$ and legal thing first but consider the patient." Cry me a river. You have unreasonable expectations. Get real. -
Why is having surgery in Mexico such a taboo subject?
TheCurvyJones replied to jjinWA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery with Dr. Guillermo Alvarez with Endobaratric in Mexico. I felt like I was in expert hands and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I wish Dr. Alvarez was my primary care physician. From everyone that I've talked to that had their surgery covered by insurance, Aftercare typically comes with the cost of the surgery, meaning they don't get paid to provide aftercare for a surgery they didn't perform. Also keeping in mind that surgeons tend to be a little bit behind the eight ball… Think about it, some of the surgeons are still handing out RNY guidelines to VSG patients. Bariatric surgeons can't even come to a agreement on post surgery routines, let alone come behind another surgeon and provide support care for some other doctors work. He's already missing out on nearly $30,000 of income from a surgery he's not performed. Many surgeons just feel that the work done in Mexico is subpar and they don't want to be responsible for any complications. That said, there are innumerable doctors in the Seattle area. It should be relatively easy to find a weight-loss surgery friendly doctor to provide after care for your daughter. -
confused about the approval process
Sharon1964 replied to losinglily's topic in Insurance & Financing
Pre-authorization for surgery without a surgeon giving your medical information is not going to happen for the majority of insurance. Your surgeon needs to evaluate you to see if you are a good candidate for surgery, and then he will send in a pre-auth request form with your medical information. In the meantime, you can call your insurance company and get a copy of their bariatric policy in writing, so you will know exactly what the requirements are. -
Had my initial Plastics consultation
Daisee68 replied to Chrystee's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
@@Jesm1029 - Supposedly rule of thumb is waiting to you are at goal and stable for 6 no the to a year before having surgery. My NUT is insistent that I wait at least 18 months to 24 months post-op to have surgery. Having said that, I reached goal at 1 year and had my PS consultation right at 1 year and have scheduled my first surgery for October which will be 16 months post-op. My plastics surgeon just asks that you are at goal and stable for 3 months (which I will be). My bariatric surgeon and counselor (and various other drs) are fine with me preceding now. There are a few folks on here who had surgery less than a year out but I think when you get to or close to goal is really a better determination. Sent from my HTC One M9 using the BariatricPal App
