  1. I wanted to see if anyone has had a problem with insurance approving revision surgery. I feel like an absolute failure. I had a band placed in 2010 and had to have it removed because of complications and converted to a sleeve in 2015. For some reason my body just didn’t let me lose the weight as easily as I did with the band. I’ve put back all the weight since then. Im going to see my surgeon on Monday. When I called to make the appointment the lady told me that I may have a hard time with approval since I hadn’t continued to follow up with the office. I went to all my scheduled appointments and was never told I needed to continue checking in. Im just trying to mentally prepare for my appointment. Im afraid they will tell me there is nothing they can do to help me get healthier. I just feel defeated.
  2. Technically yes but no... After we heal up sure we can eat pretty much anything but in smaller portions. But the whole idea is to eat healthier as well... the bad things that got us to this weight should be avoided for the most part like fast food and fatty items.
  3. I am about 7 weeks post op. I lost a lot of weight pre op and first 2 weeks. Since then i have slowed a lot. here are my measurements that i take on the 4th of every month. As you can see its not super fast. This process takes a while.
  4. I'm so sorry you're struggling. That sounds really hard. Have you talked to them about medications? I was hungry since day 2 after my surgery (but I did/do have restriction) and they put me on metformin and then also topamax, which have both helped. Also, what helps me is drinking a lot of coffee and tea with milk and splenda (the combination of milk and caffeine makes me feel more full) and drinking when I feel hungry, or keeping busy. A friend of mine didn't have any restriction and after her weight loss stalled they started her on ozempic. That has helped her to start losing weight again.

    @SleeveDiva2022. One word: Perspective. You’ve lost 26 net lbs in 6 weeks. That is a good amount. The glory of losing 15 lbs a week those 2 first weeks is just not sustainable. You were actually above the curve those first weeks. But really, it all evens out in the end for everyone. So long as we stick to plan and make intelligent adjustments along the way, we’ll lose weight. And yes, some at faster/slower rates than others. I know it probably feels like its over and that this is all the weight you are destined to lose, but frankly its just not true (if u stick to it). And basically impossible (so long as u stick to it). So another word for you as well: Patience. Good Luck! ❤️

    Blah...my first stall...

    why on earth are you eating burgers this early after surgery?????, you are not following the plan. you are meant to eat slowly, don't eat burgers or fries or anything like that. What are you drinking ? I suspect that could be a source of uncounted calories too. As I said before just because you can doesn't mean you should . for this to work you have to stick to the plan once you are 6 months out and lost most of your weight then you can play around with it a bit but while you are drinking and eat what you want and as much as you want its not going to work.

    Blah...my first stall...

    I'm so frustrated. I lost 30 pounds the first 2 weeks after surgery. Then I hit a stall for 2 weeks. Lost 5 pounds when the stall broke, and then literally lost nothing else. Stayed at that weight for a week, and now I'm gaining weight!!!!! I don't understand it. I bought a food scale and I weigh everything. I check the labels on everything to make sure Protein is high and carbs and fats are low. I work out once, sometimes twice, a day. I never have restriction, so I make sure to set alarms for when I can eat so I don't graze or eat too much (I eat 3 meals and 1 snack per day). I'm always hungry, but I do my best to ignore it and stick to the diet and eating schedule. I did a journal of what I eat and I sent it to my dietician and she said "it looks good, you're doing what you're supposed to. It might be that you have PCOS and it's holding on to your weight and even putting some back on. We see this a lot in PCOS patients." Wait....what??? I lost 100 pounds in 8 months on Keto, but I can't lose more than 30 with WLS??? And it took 2 months before the weight came back with keto, but I can't even make it to 6 weeks post op before the weight starts coming back with WLS??? I went down from a size 30 in clothing to a size 22 before the weight came back with keto. I haven't gone down any clothing sizes with WLS and my clothes are still fitting pretty much the same (I've gained 6 pounds back from the 30 I lost). I can drink as much as I want, eat anything I want, don't have to eat slow because there's no restriction and nothing to make me slow down, I could only eat 1/3 of a burger a week or so ago, now I can eat a whole one with no issues and not quite feel comfortable yet (I still stop, even though I'm still hungry). I know everyone says my stomach is still healing, but I never lost my hunger hormone, I never had food aversion, I never really had any restriction. After the first 2 weeks (my stomach was still very sensitive and I had to crush pills and be careful what I ate because PAIN), I never had any other ANYTHING that would even indicate I had surgery. Literally nothing has changed. So I follow the diet, weigh my food, eat only at my designated times, work out, journal what I eat, stay hungry, gain weight back, and basically just live miserably every day.

    June 2022 surgery buddies

    Hi there! I'm in the same boat as you, with similar stats as well. Highest weight was around 300, but I'm down to around 276 after over a YEAR of jumping through hoops to get insurance approval (I started the process in February of 2021!). The weight loss I've experienced so far can be attributed to giving up soda (even diet) and alcohol, which I did last summer. My surgery is June 24th, so today is the first day of my two week liquid diet, and someone at work has already offered me candy...uuuuuuugh. I've only told my closest colleagues about my surgery (I work at a school and today is the last day for students, so my surgery will be over summer break when I don't work anyway) but I might end up telling more of my co-workers at the end-of-year faculty luncheon later today, because some people might wonder why I'm sipping a protein shake staring longingly at everyone else's plates. How has your pre-op diet been going? What is your surgery date? Edit: Oh derp, I just saw you said your surgery is on the 20th. >_<

    June 2022 surgery buddies

    Hi- I'm new to the group. Just joined yesterday. I'm 38 years old and started the process on Jan10th with a starting weight of 305.4. Currently on my 2 week pre-op diet (no fun lol) and am at about 291. I'm having the sleeve done on the 20th. Like most of us, I am extremely worried about the after effects of the surgery and the recovery process. The biggest fear is that I will have gone through all of this and just not see the results. I have had so many appointments, clearances, tests and procedures to make sure that I'm able to have this done and now that that is all over, I'm just scared. Also I'm worried about the COVID test. I really don't want to come up positive and have my whole schedule ruined. How are you all? How is everyone coping?

    May 2022 surgery?

    I had a sleeve reconstruction due to the first time they used an old technique and left the sleeve large at the top of the stomach, so I am a slow loser this time. The first time I lost a pound a day the first month. I lost 50lbs by 3 months and 60 by 6 months. So stick really to the diet for max weight loss. I lost total of 65 lbs but 4 years later gained 25 back. I had surgery May 13. I was so swollen because of scar tissue. The surgeon said my surgery lasted over double the time due to scar tissue. I had no nausea or heartburn like I did the first time. I am sticking to the diet and monitoring everything I eat by logging it in the barasitic app. I have lost total of 14lbs but that counts the weight I gained after surgery due to swelling. I have heard slow losers will pick up weight loss as they heal and the body adjust. I definitely can tell the restriction compared to last time. It's just hard to have patience. Just follow your diet plan and take measurements so if the scales are not moving you can see inches lost.

    How did I get to this weight?

    Yes! I was so excited to finally decide to have surgery that I told everyone. I got almost totally positive responses. My friends and family had all seen me lose and gain tons of weight. I beat myself up a lot, but that didn't work, and I needed to find something that did.
  13. many women complain that their cycles and moods get wonky for a few weeks or months after surgery. It's due to estrogen being released during the rapid weight loss (estrogen is stored in fat cells). It'll eventually stabilize.

    Day 4 Post-Op

    a lot of people lose their hunger for a few months after surgery. It almost always returns sometime during the first year (mine came back at five months out). Take full advantage of that - it'll never in your life be easier to lose weight than it will be these next few months, when you're not dealing with hunger. I think it was about three weeks before I could sleep on my side again.

    VBG to Gastric Bypass

    First of all, I would meet with a bariatric surgeon, not a general surgeon. You want a bariatric surgeon because they see these issues regularly, and are at the top of their game with weight loss surgeries. Secondly, if you live in an area that has a university with medical school, find out which hospital they teach at and find a professor of bariatric surgery that is practicing and teaching. They are on the forefront of bariatric surgery. My bariatric surgeon is a professor and she told me that she does revisions that other bariatric surgeons won't touch. Don't take the general surgeons word for it. Seek second opinions with bariatric surgeons. Best wishes!

    May 2022 surgery?

    How are all the early May surgery folks doing? I was 5/6 and down 30lbs. Maybe more but it’s my cycle week so I’m off the scale for fear I’ll throw it at the wall if I see the result 🤣 How we feeling? Getting close to cleared for weight lifting and harder exercises? My workout clearance appt is 6/27 🥳

    multiple sclerosis and gastric sleeve

    My surgery went well. Haven't had any MS flares at all. Had a bit of a slow recovery because of the incision they removed the stomach from. That one really hurt for a while. Other than that, things went well and I didn't have complications. Don't really have any restriction, and my hunger definitely never went away. I lost a lot of weight really fast, and then hit a 2 week stall, and now the weight is coming off super slow. Like SLOOOOW. But this is a marathon, not a sprint. I'll get there in the end.
  18. Hi everyone, I am wanting to get a revision surgery done from a Vertical Banded Gastroplasty to a Gastric Bypass . I had the VBG done 30 years ago, unfortunately required a couple revisions back then as the staple lining had come undone. I have been having issues for years, food getting stuck, having to purge regularly, herd etc…. I met with a General Surgeon who said, nope, too much scar tissue. Has anyone gotten the same answer but then found a bariatric surgeon to do the revision? After the revision did you lose all your weight, or only a small amount? Any help regarding this would be so helpful to me. Thanks so much!
  19. That’s a great perspective. Not a lot of guidance outside of the “allowed foods” list and macro goals and I feel like I’m never going to be able to hit my Protein marks. I’m just in constant fear of not hitting those numbers and overeating in pursuit. Doctor gave me pretty steep weight loss goals and very little post-surgery guidance so the struggle is real! Thank you for the feedback! Feeling much better about enjoying that wrap but definitely cutting back going forward. Learning journey!

    Losing weight except Belly!!

    You are still pretty early out so it will take a while to start to lose your belly but just so you know As we get older we carry weight more around our midsections so even if you are a size you have been before, assuming it has been a few years, your belly may be bigger this time that it was before.

    I feel your pain. As everyone else has said, weight loss definitely slows the more you lose. Sounds like you've recognised that your body dysmorphia is a big issue and feeding into your concern, so I agree that you need to address that asap. Is there any way you can correct your stats in your side bar as they're not correct and they would help people to help you!

    Pity Party - Frustrated - Venting!

    I am seeing this complacency in myself this month. In a few days I will be 9 month PO and I have GAINED a pound this last month (of course, I just spent yesterday in a plane so I'm certainly retaining water). I eat sweets almost every day. I am annoyed because all the YouTube videos I watched from Dr. Matthew Weiner promised me I would be craving produce and wouldn't want sweets anymore. LIES. Not only do I still crave sweets, I can eat a fair amount of sweets and crap, and I still haven't learned to stop when I've had ENOUGH rather than when I'm FULL/stuffed. I also find that my brain wasn't operated on: I have this same desire to eat when faced with travel delays/cancellations, which happens a lot in my job. I keep trying to schedule visits with the bariatric therapist, but the office doesn't even call me back....

    LOL... You're two weeks out and you're expecting your stomach to be tiny? In addition to what everyone else said, your stomach may still be swollen from the surgery process itself. I am 9 months out and my stomach still sticks out compared to what I expected for the size I wear (medium/10). Like others have said, it may be that it will always be where I carry excess weight and it may be that there's some excess skin in the mix.

    I'm just about 9 months and this month is the first month I haven't lost any weight. It's very frustrating, isn't it? I have about 15 lbs to my "goal" but I'm not at all happy with my body. I try to focus on things like how small my clothes are compared to what they used to be, because when I look at myself nekkid I don't see much progress. I'm hoping that focusing on the "basics" of tracking calories, avoiding sweets, focusing on whole foods rather than processed junk, and listening to my fullness cues will help me start losing again, but I know I may have lost all the weight I can.

    To be fair ... also consider the fact of being a woman, for those that are. Our bodies are completely different from men biologically. Due to things our bodies do that men don't, our weight can readily fluctuate from day to day. Water weight, menstruation, stressors - just to name a few - can affect our weight loss/gain even with something as restricting as bariatric surgery. The weight comes off differently from women compared to men as well. Men don't plateau as often or as long typically either. Being a woman comes with a whole different scope of resistance that we have to battle through to get the same results. Just stick with it and, as stated, if weighing less often is better for you personally to see a bigger picture of loss then do that. It doesn't hurt anything. Edit: Another thing that could help is to fluctuate your caloric intake. If you steadily take in 500 calories, your body will adjust to living on that 500 calories. Meaning suddenly. you aren't burning more than you're taking in. This is why most calorie restricting diets do not work long-term. Edit2: Along with changing up caloric intake, adjusting how much you're burning as well can help. You just have to not let your body get set into a routine and get comfortable.
