    Shakes without food

I didn't have to do a liquid pre-op diet, but I did have to do 2 weeks of very low calorie and low carb. The first three days were rough but after that my body adjusted and I was fine. I was on liquids for four weeks post-op. People's experiences vary, but I can tell you that for me, I was tired and sore from the surgery, but the lack of solid food or tons of calories was not an issue. My body had plenty of fat reserves to fuel itself, I had no interest in eating anything, and I'm pretty sure that even if I had wanted to eat, the terror of damaging my very injured stomach would have stopped me dead in my tracks. It was an adjustment period but not a huge deal. I live alone and managed to take care of my household just fine without any assistance post-op. Went back to work full time after a couple of weeks. It really wasn't anything to worry about or fear. Good luck!
  2. Hi everyone, I've seen the Nutritionist, psychologist and had my blood tests. I've got the letters to support my funding application and I have one more Dr visit before I can apply for my funding. I'm in Australia and I"m applying to my Superannuation Fund to be able to access my own money to pay for this surgery. I've been feeling really good about the surgery and I'm still going to do it. I'm just a bit scared. For instance, how bad is the nausea? Are you vomiting for weeks? are you in pain at the site of the band? How long until all of you could return to work comfortably? I may also have to have a small bowel biopsy at the same time and a camera stuck in there to have a look for celiac disease and I think this is what has thrown me into disarray. I'm still going ahead with the surgery, nothing is going to stop me there, I'm just feeling worried. I would really appreciate any of your stories about your own post-operative experiences. Thank you so much in advance.

    pre op diet?

I am on a high protein, low carb, low fat diet. No starchy foods; no sodas; no dairy (with the exception of low-fat cottage cheese and low-fat cheese). Non-starchy veges (3 or less servings per meal) and on serving of low-carb fruit per day. On this for at least 2 weeks. One week down and not bad.

    I'm SO Ready

I have had a similar experience as well, because my surgeon's office and insurance required a 6-month supervised diet period. So effectively I have been waiting since January to make the leap into sleeve land. I did the same thing - start making changes one at a time as I get closer to my date. For instance, I haven't had anything fizzy, including soda, since January 6th. (My surgeon calls soda 'liquid candy'.) I also took that long period of time to say goodbye to things I wasn't going to be able to have for a while after the surgery - if I craved something, I went and got it. Not bingeing, just having some as a meal and then being done. That has helped me immensely with learning to identify emotional eating and sticking to the 6-month diet. I'm on the 2-week pre-op low carb diet now... 2 Protein shakes a day, one meal. I've only been on it two days, but so far so good. Good luck to you on your path! Enjoy Memphis!

    Getting Paid

Thank you, Don. I've been an accompanist for a musical theater class at a junior college for the past five or six years. They have always sent checks to me, and I did have to sign a written form, which I suppose was a little different. The past few times they were slower and slower in sending my money, and I finally had to say to my friend, who taught the class, that I wouldn't play any more unless I could be assured of getting paid in a timely manner. With this Christmas gig, I'm just going to have to tell this woman that I want the money the same night, and if she offers transportation for me, it doesn't mean she gets to deduct that from my check. I play for a good three hours, and more if people are enjoying the music, and that's not counting the time when the hostess likes to lead everybody singing. Looks like I'm going to have to tell her what I need. But contracts from now on, I think is a good idea. Debbien
  6. August 5 now I'm starting to get scared. Actually freaking out a bit. Last week was the my last NUT until after and she said I was HPYLORI positive. They scared the hell out of me because she said I might have to wait 6 weeks to have the surgery. She called my Dr. and he said it was fine to just put me on antibiotics until the surgery. I know he said it was OK but now my anxciety is kicking in and I'm questioning it. Should I wait or is this my excuse because I'm starting to freak out. Also this is a post-op question. I've been reading about the constipation after surgery. Sorry if this is TMI but I've suffered from this my whole life. I was wondering can we take Probiotics after surgery and does it help? Promise the pre-op pics will come soon just trying to get the nerve up. Love this site can't get enough, Lori

    Cigna NY

I have Cigna and I'm in TX. Requirements are three months waiting, bmi 40+, or 35+ with co-morbidities, pcp referral, supervised diet visits, etc. It's pretty nice actually and not too much (for me at least-I have no co-morbidities-that's what I'm preventing!) The waiting is the worse part.

Update for my dates!!! Yesterday I had my last visit with my dietician. I will be seeing my surgeon on 4/11/17 for my last visit with him before surgery. Seeing my Primary Care for clearance on 4/18/17. Starting my pre op optifast diet on 4/19/17 and then having my surgery on 5/3/17!!! I am so excited I can't stop smiling. My boss knows what's going on so she is already approved all of my dates off. Now the reason why I don't start my pre op diet till 4/19 is because they said it takes about 2 weeks for insurance to review everything to approve the surgery. [emoji847]

    Looking For Advice

What type of Protein enriched carbs are you referring to? I saw my primary doctor today and he took very detailed notes about everything that has happened so far. Instead of running off to another surgeon, he would like me to have an appointment with the doctor who did the stretching and ask the surgeon at the next appointment if maybe I should see a GI specialist. He wants to be an advocate for me. He plans on speaking with my surgeon directly and asking him for a plan for me. I feel better knowing he is on my side. I hope I get some answers next week when I have appointments and an upper GI series (barium swollow). Thank you everyone for your input! I appreciate it!

    6 Month Pre-op Diet

Next week will be # 5 of 6 for me! Since I started my 6 mo doctor supervised diet - it's opened my eyes on how to eat better! I try make my meals a well balanced meal - (which I never did before) and watch my portion sizes. I've completely cut out junk food, and have weaned myself off of caffeine. I'm taking the weight off slowly. I weighed myself on my bathroom scale this morning and I'm down 15 lbs since January. The best piece of advise I can give you is - if they required a food diary from you - use MyFitnessPal.com! I print off my monthly diary of food & exercise to take with me for each appointment. That way my NUT can see that I'm staying on track and it makes it easy for her to provide me suggestions on things I need to change in my diet.

    August 5th Buds!

I am having my surgery on August 6th, I have purchased my vitamins and protein drinks, but they told me to wait until after my surgery to start them. I am so excited, but so nervous at the same time. My family are big Italian eaters, so they are not taking my surgery very well. To them I do not look overweight, I wear it well. But i am 5'2 and 204 pounds in a size 14, with high BP, high cholesterol, and now after my first sleep study sleep apnea. I need to go back for a second study and wear a CPAP 2 weeks before surgery, oh joy

    2 days left

I am actually excited for you! Your whole life is going to change! Good luck and I hope you have an uneventful and painless week.

    6 days left

Good news. Good luck on your surgery. Here are some suggestions: Take an unflattering before photograph of yourself. Later when the weight is off, take an after photo. You and everyone you show it to will be astonished. Thirty minutes of walking everyday. This will help the recovery process immensely. If you drink caffeinated drinks, cut that out now. I gave up my 6 Coke a day habit cold-turkey. I suffered through a week of withdrawal syndrome (very bad headaches). It is better to get that over with now, than compound it with the effects of surgery.

    I wish I knew..

Your pre-op and post-op diet will depend on your surgeon. Most people pre-op are put on liquids for 1-2 weeks to help shrink the liver and overall prep the body for surgery. Some people are put on 2 liquid meals and a low carb/low fat solid meal; it all depends on your surgeon. Post-op we go through a liquid, mushy/soft food, and then solid food stage. I was on liquids for 2 weeks, mushies for 2 weeks, and onto solid foods. The timeframe here differs per surgeon as well. Pre-op I had Protein shakes, broth, Soups, and Water. Post-op liquids were about the same but I had Jello and sometimes sugar-free popsicles. Mushies was refried Beans with salsa and cheese, cottage cheese, thicker soups, ricotta cheese baked with spaghetti sauce, and really anything i could puree into a soft texture. Solids well..that's a given though I now only eat turkey and chicken most of the time, sometimes fish. I started off with a pretty low carb diet (around 30-40g of a carbs a day) for the first 7-8 months. At 9 months out I'm closer to goal and have started eating more grains and fruit. Hope this helps.

    Feeling so unsure.

I must have flip flopped about 50 times! My insurance company required 6 months preparation, which in retrospect was a good thing. I actually lost 30 lbs during the 6 month wait, which really turned into a 9 month wait with submittals/approvals/scheduling. I kept telling myself, maybe I can do this on my own after all. I finally realized the only reason that I lost the 30 lbs is that I believed in the surgery and that if I didn't get it, I would be right back where I started. The first 2 weeks post-op are no fun. 4 months after surgery now, I am down 70 lbs and feel great. The sleeve works as advertised for me, stops me from eating too much. It is a very personal decision that you can't rely on other people to make for you. The vast majority of us on this board have had very positive experiences

    What to get before surgery

Better than sippy cup you can get about 100 medicine cups from Amazon for about $3-5. I had to reorder after my first week. And I highly recommend that you DO in fact make a serious investment in your protein. Since you will no longer be spending money on other food you can have a spending spree on your protein and liquid and vitamins and still save money. I highly recommend Premier Protein Vanilla shakes, Vitamin Water Zero, and Pacific "Bone Stock" chicken broth. You can get these all on Amazon. The Premier Protein are READY to drink...i.e. No powder. They are $7.62 for 4 or $1.90 each and if you were getting a less expensive meal pre op let me know. The Bone Stock is ridiculously expensive at about $5 for two 8 oz servings but again that's $2.50 per meal now which is NOT expensive. Just also keep in mind that you will not sit down the day you get home from the hospital and chug an entire 8oz of broth or an entire 11 oz premier protein at once. It will take you at least an hour to get down that much of either. If you are buying powder Bariatric Advantage is the highest quality and best nutrition that there is and their Orange Cream flavor is very nice. If you skimp on this stuff, you are only skimping on yourself. If you get cheap vitamins you will not absorb them so well. If you get plain Campells chicken broth, well that is more of a salty liquid than a protein because it only has like 1 gram of protein per serving. Pre op I preferred and bought lots of beef consommé and chocolate shakes but post op I did not want ANYTHING remotely beefy or chocolatey. I'm 9 months out now and will have about 1 square a day of some REALLY good dark chocolate with almonds but I was about 3 months out before I really tried any. SPEND your paycheck on your nutrients:-) Do NOT shortchange yourself, this is not the time. Short changing ourselves is what got a lot of us to need the surgery to begin with. Take care of YOU girl. YOU Deserve it!!! [emoji4]

    Feeling so unsure.

No regrets. NONE. Didn't tell many until 2 weeks before surgery. Didn't ask for anyone's permission so they knew when I told them it was a done deal. They only option they had was either support me or get out of the way. I was fortunate to have had a pleasant surgical experience. This has been not only the best decision I ever made, but also a fairly easy lifestyle to adapt to.

    Diarrhea ...again

I was having a lot of diarrhea in the first 2 weeks due to becoming lactose intolerant. Try cutting out milk products for a day and see what happens. It only took me a day to see a huge difference.

    Barium Swallow

I'm having one in a couple of weeks, but I am really unsure of what it is and what it does. I have been banded since September 2, 2010 and have only lost 37 pounds and in the last 2 months I have only lost 2 pounds. I'm taking zumba 2 nights a week and I walk 5 days a week plus watch what I eat. So the doc said next visit I would have a barium swallow. Anyone had one of these and what does it show? And if it shows anything can it be fixed without another surgery? Thanks for all responses. Connie

    Pre-Op Diet

When I was struggling the first few days, I looked at the fat hangin' off my body and said, "Nah, I ain't gonna starve any time soon!" And that seriously helped when my head-hunger was telling me that I was starving. Nah, not even close to starving. After the third day my body stopped demanding solid food and just said, "Yeah dude, whatever. I'll live with the Protein shakes then." And then we were fine. And don't forget that these few weeks are just a tiny blip on the radar of your life.
