  1. I am here yet again checking all of this out. I am feeling like a complete failure and after going to the doctor today, I am in super freak out mode. A little history, I got a lap band in June 2009. Lost weight and things were good until the said started. Was revised to sleeve on October 2014. Lost 20 more lbs but was never able to give up the Nexuim or Prilosec. Now 2 years later the acid has gotten really bad again. I take 2 Nexuim daily and up to 2 Zantac to get me through. I had an upper hi last Month and went for results today. Doctor wants to revise to bypass! I am scared of this. Is it hard to eat with a bypass? I dealt with the band and the getting stuck and never wAnt to deal with that again! I feel like a complete failure. Most people don't get one bariatric surgery. I am looking at this being my 3rd. Will the bypass help with the acid? Dr told me I can't stay on Nexuim long term because of osteoporosis.
  2. I'm getting a revision from lap band to sleeve. My paperwork was submitted over a week ago. I checked today but still pending. What is the usually turnaround time with Aetna? I'm scared I'll be denied

    CIGNA Insurance

I have Cigna and had to have 3 visits with the NUT. I had to show a change in my lifestyle like more protein, less carbs, and added exercise for example. The change in habits led to the weight loss for me. I could not have a net gain, but the NUT said basically insurance wants to see the adoption of healthy habits. Each visit we went over in detail what I was eating and drinking. I was approved for band to bypass revision. Cigna took about a week to approve once everything was submitted. I was never given an amount to lose... just guidelines to adopt the new habits I would need post op. Best of luck! Hope all works out! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. **************DISCLAIMER******************** I am not thinking about a revision since I just had surgery in June. I just like to be informed and the internet isn't giving me a lot of info on this subject. JUST CURIOUS ..****** So I read stories on here about revisions from band to sleeve, or sleeve to bypass etc. But maybe I am missing something. Do people get the option of trying a rx first in addition to whatever their current procedure is? And if so , do the drugs not work because of the new absorption rate? is it even safe to take weight loss rx if you have had bariatric surgery? Having this done once was such a process im just wondering what people go through when they seek a revision? if you have taken weight loss pills after surgery or had to consider a revision please share with me....thanks in advance. ********AGAIN I AM NOT TRYIG TO GET A REVISION************
  5. Your post is amazing!! Even if just one person reads this and realizes that Tijuana, Mexico is the best option for them, would make the world of difference between getting or not getting WLS. My hubby just went thru BeLiteWeight and we went to Juarez, Mexico, and our experience was NOT at all like yours. His Surgeon was pretty good, but in was there early in the morning and didn't leave until 9:30 or 10:00pm. He was doing surgery's all day back to back. We had a very bad experience in 2013 when his Lap Band malfunctioned and had eroded into his liver so I was kind of on high alert while I was waiting for someone to come let me know how he was. His DR had told me to wait in his room and he would come let me know how he was...he didn't!! I was so upset, it seemed like it was going to be just like his failed revision in which he almost died. Just when I was ready to go and find out something they wheeled him back to his room. The hospital wasn't quite up to par. The staff didn't speak English much. That was a huge problem. Anyway, I so wish he would have used BARIATRICPAL!!!!! He had looked into this site but he thought that with the other outfit being higher in their price that he would have better care. NOT!! The old saying YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR didn't work for him. He wanted and needed the RNY but his right side was solid scar tissue from the BAND and the failed revision. Again so happy you both had such a great experience!! Take care
  6. @@Nikkinee Yes, I actually made a topic in the Band to Sleeve revision asking if those that had the band to sleeve find themselves to have an easier recovery. By day 3, I felt normal except for muscular pain like one would feel if they had done too many sit ups. Only bad time was the first 4 hrs after my surgery, then I slept on Day 2. I chalked it up to having the most awesome surgeon but I'm seeing it time and time again. I can tolerate all foods, and right away I could drink water like crazy.
  7. i"m in week 5 and not eating lettuce or raw veggies, I have tried cucumbers (skinned) and that worked well with some hummus, but it is a softer less fibrous veggie, tomatoes will probably work for me as well, but haven't felt the need to try it. My Dietitian is fine with me having soft foods at this point (not necessarily purees). eg ground meats work well for me as long as they are moist (so I have made chili, stuffed peppers etc). i have have had 2 oz of chicken thigh with a low fat gravy and it worked well. any meat portions I'm keeping to 2 oz (particularly if dense like salmon sashimi or chicken). if my meal had ground beef I keep it to around 1/2 cup and i stop when I feel satiated. I'm having cottage cheese several times a week. My diet introduces fruit (as a carb portion) at the purees stage. I have a 1/2 banana in my morning Protein shake. that is the extent of my fruit consumption in a day. I have pureed and strained berries and added a tablespoon to my cottage cheese to sweeten it. if i liked yogurt I would have done that with yogurt as well. keep in mind I had a revision so my pouch is bigger than most bypass patients so I understand that were I may be comfortable with 2 oz of meat a regular bypass patient may be full with 1. Bottom line, follow what your doctor has given you, with the caveat that if you don't think you are ready for something yet..wait. eg. I tried a hard boiled egg in a pinch at work for a snack when I ran out of shakes...ugh...too dense..I didn't feel sick but it felt like it was still sitting in my stomach hours later, so i'm sticking to poached for now. I'm in no rush to try raw veggies and lettuce though I really miss salad. I'm satisfied with the variety of foods i'm eating for now so I'll probably wait until 3+months to try it, I will have to see how the other things I'm slowly introducing and trying go.
  8. @@BSWhip08 I had band to sleeve revision 4 weeks ago. And I wanted to say that even though we're all different, for me personally, the recovery from getting the sleeve was way less painful than the band. My tummy didn't hurt at all like it did with the band. I was shocked at how easy the recovery was. And I too had my band about 10 years ago. I'm only 4 weeks out so I don't know what the future holds, but I can say that I don't feel hungry and I have to force myself to eat most of the time. It's definitely nothing like the band. Lastly, your kids will be fine. I'm sure they'll see you becoming healthier and more active and just be happy that you aren't struggling anymore. I don't look at my parents and think because they did xyz that I'm going to do that too. Kids will be kids, they'll do what they want regardless, but at the end of the day they'll be just fine. Good luck with your surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Rny? Or sleeve?

Originally I was going to get the sleeve and after meeting the surgeon learned that Gerd can sometimes become very severe after sleeve surgery. In fact, some end up with GERD after never having it before surgery and ultimately end up with a revision to RNY. After doing some research on RNY and understanding all of the elements I went for it and have not regretted my decision to do so. It is still the gold standard in weight loss surgery. I lost all of my excess weight - 152Lbs. I had severe gerd and was on max dosages for PPIs everyday. Since the day of my surgery i have not even had a slight case of heartburn. RNY literally cured my gerd, put my diabetes and stage 3 kidney disease into remission. Cleared up my high blood pressure and high cholesterol and cured my sleep apnea. NO MORE BIPAP for me..... My goal was to get healthy.......I did not have any idea that I would actually get to a normal healthy weight. That was a plus!
  12. That's, why I weighing out the options I have read many people that have the revision from band to sleeve have had mostly complications due leaks so they end up having the bypass to correct it. So I was thinking maybe the bypass would be best... Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App I had the band. Hated it! Vomiting all the time. Had it removed a year ago and just got the sleeve. I love it! It feels so much better. No sickness at all no vomiting. I can tell when to stop eating. With the band my first bite always made me vomit. I'm 2 weeks post op and down a total of 24 lbs. I'm feeling great and very optimistic. I wish you great success which ever choice you make. ???? 13. I'm having my revision to sleeve on Nov 9, 2016!! Anyone else on here having the same day surgery?? I started my pre-op diet yesterday. 2 Protein shakes, 2 Protein Bars and 2oz chicken and 2 oz veggies a day. I'm having a hard time eating all the protein wth the band!! Especially the protein bars! They are so thick and chewy and hard to get down. Next Monday and Tuesday I'm on Clear liquids only and Wednesday is surgery day! 1 night in the hospital (hopefully) and then I can go home. I'm nervous. Excited. Scared. So many emotions! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Which surgery?

amf1025, Well, he had the lap band for 13 years. He did lose 100#. But his starting weight at the time was 515#s. The Surgeon said he wasn't strong enough for the RNY. Which wasn't true because at the time he was still driving log truck and long haul trucking. He was 50yo. So after the surgery, they kept having problems putting in the fill and finally ruptured the port. Back into a day surgery got that fixed. So in 2013 it malfunctioned and he couldn't hold anything down. The VA suggested that he see a Bariatric Surgeon which we did. they said he needed to have the band removed. And they would do the revision at that time to an RNY. When they got in there the band had eroded into his liver. They couldn't do the revision but removed his band and gallbladder (due to him having stones) they told him that in 3 months when he was healed they would do the RNY. He ended up getting abscesses and was deathly sick for 9 months and 3 months he doesn't even remember. So now he is healed up so we go back to the Surgeon, he tell us he won't do the WLS because he said, he was a "PROBLEM CHILD". But he did refer him to another surgeon in Portland Oregon. Now they would do his surgery when he lost 25#'s and got his A1C (he is diabetic) down to a 7 or 8. Which if he lost weight his blood sugars would go high and if his blood sugars were down he gained weight. He just couldn't get it done. So then we get the news that he has Cancer on his kidney. Which the VA didn't tell us for 3 years. Now he has to lose 150#'s before they can do anything about the kidney cancer. So then we get the money up and off to Mexico we went. On June 3, 2013 he has surgery and is supposed to get the RNY. When they got in there they found that his whole right side is solid scar tissue. They can't do the RNY so he gets the Sleeve. So here we are now he has lost 60#'s but just can't seem to get any more off. This could have all been avoided if the first surgeon would have done the RNY. When he was strong enough to go thru it. They gave him 4 years if they can't do anything about the Cancer. Maybe 2 good years but the last 2 would be HELL!!! It has been a year already. Now I just found the KETO diet so I'm going to try it. We are both going to do it. You can do it to lose or to maintain. I feel like if I can do it wth him it might make it a little easier on him. I feel almost desperate like time is running out for us. So this is how the Lap-Band has been for him. Plus we have heard that most Dr.'s don't do them hardly, but the do many revisions. Please think hard before making your mind up on which way to go. Good luck!!
  16. My first two weeks has seen a 36lb loss. Amazing myself with it all. Had to buy braces to hold my trousers up for now as I refuse to buy new for the first few months....... I may have to revise that though :-)

    Which surgery?

I just had my band revised to rny. The lapbad is a piece of equipment and will eventually age and fail. My bet is that everyone with one will eventually need a revision. Mine lasted 11 years, but I've heard many fail at 5. My surgeon went as far as saying anyone still putting them in now should be sued for malpractice, they just don't work long term...10+ years and many people have issues with them and they have the data to support that.

    Band to sleeve Failure

I am also a Band-to-Sleeve failure - thank you homeesiick for starting this thread. I got a band back in 2010 when I weighed 330 pounds. The band worked great, because I lost 85 pounds, but I was throwing up each time I ate anything. I would even have slime come out of my nose! All the vomiting put a lot of strain on my esophagus and the part of my stomach above the band, where the strain ended up tearing a hole in my stomach. I saw another doctor and he revised me to a sleeve in 2015. The sleeve worked for a while, but I slowly started regaining weight and I am now close to my pre-band weight. My doctor recommended I get duodenal switch, and I am now waiting for approval from my insurance company. My doctor thinks a contributing reason why my sleeve didn’t work is because of all the damage done to my esophagus by the band. I would be curious to know how many other people have had a Band-to-Sleeve failure. Thanks

    Which surgery?

Lap band 2011, company went bankrupt, band slipped, daily vomiting and gain all my eight back. Revision on RNY Oct 3!! 28lbs lost in 4 weeks. Just too many possible issues with a hunk of plastic in your body, imo Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Which surgery?

I had my LapBand removed and revised to VSG on 10/18/16. For me, the band caused much more trouble than I ever expected. I lost about 60 pounds and kept it off for three years. When the LapBand was working and I didn't have to fight with fills and un-fills, life was good. When things went bad, they went really bad. At the time of revision, they found that my band had slipped and I had prolapsed stomach. Nothing I did, just a failure of the device. I did all my research before being banded and I did all the routine care that my program required, but I still had a band that was a failure. My surgeon is doing very few bands today. And...the rate of weight loss is spectacular versus my band. I'm down 17 lbs. since pre op. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Round Two - Band to Sleeve

I'm also a LapBand to sleeve revision. My band started to go bad a few years ago and I'm thrilled that the thing is gone. I'm not quite two weeks post op yet, but I will tell you, I'm already so far ahead of where I was with the band. I'm down 17 pounds since pre op started. It took me two months to have that with the band. I wish that the sleeve had been available in 2010. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. You said at first that you were leaning towards the Sleeve, but your Dr recommended the DS. Then you said if it didn't work out you could go back for another WLS. I would strongly think hard on that. It isn't easy to get revisions approved and sometimes they can even do the surgery. Now I will try to explain why I feel this way. It might be a long but here goes....My hubby had the Lap Band for 13 years, they punctured the port and he had to go back to surgery. Then like I said 13 years out it malfunctioned. BTW he did lose 100#'s but he is a heavy big guy. Sept of 2013 he went in for a revision from the band to a RNY. When they got in there the band had eroded into his liver. There was too much bleeding and scar tissue so they backed out. No WLS for him. They removed the band and his gallbladder then told us in 3 months they would redo his WLS. NOT!! He developed abscesses and was deathly sick for 9 months 3 of them he doesn't remember. After he healed up we went back to the Surgeon but was turned away and called a problem child!! But he did get a reference to OREGON HEALTH AND UNIVERSITY in Portland, Oregon. Again, he was told to lose 25#'s and get his A1C down to a 7 or 8. (3 month blood sugars) he couldn't do both because if his A1C was down his weight was up, the other way around weight down BS up. So we went into debt and went to Juarez, Mexico. When they got in there his whole right side was solid scar tissue then again no RNY, they did the Sleeve. Now he has lost 60#'s but you know how we all say this Surgery saved our lives? Well, he has Cancer on his Kidney and was told that he couldn't have anything done until he loses 150#'s. He now still has 90#'s to go. The Sleeve just doesn't seem to have enough restriction. I know others have great results but it isn't happening for him. All of this and he might still lose his life!!! This is why I say it doesn't always happen to have more WLS. I would really think hard on what surgery I had and go for the one that will give you all of the results that you want and need!! Just my thoughts. Good Luck

    Need Some Feedback/Advice

I am a band to sleeve revision. I lost 50lbs with the lap band but put 25 back on. I had the revision done Aug.17th and so far no more pain and belching like with the band. I am 35 lbs total. I went 8 months completely unfiilled with the band to reduce all the swelling and inflammation, I did put on about 10 lbs during that time. It didn't bother me because I knew I was getting a revision. Don't sweat it and follow the steps so you can have the revision soon!! Good luck!!

  25. After having my Lap-Band in for 8 years with issue after issue and 2 babies I had it taken out Sept 1st. My surgeon was "hopeful" that Priority Health, sticklers for sticking my by their "One surgery per lifetime" policy would approve a 2nd surgery. It took a lot of documentation over the last 8 years but it was finally approved. I had 3 years of documented fills and unfills right after surgery and the most recent with band removal to back up the why should cover it. I am still in shock and cautious about my approval. It is very much a mental thing going through all this. Especially since in 2012 I had appealed for a 2nd surgery all the way to State level. But here it is, just waiting for my surgery date. I think it will be December 15th but need to get confirmation from the 2nd surgeon that it is okay that day. My surgeon wants him to do it with him since he has done more of that procedure. With 2 little ones at home, I am more than happy to have 2 surgeons working on me with such a big surgery. I feel like I can finally focus now with all waiting to see what was going to happen with approval behind me. Now I can start pre-paring for my big day. Sorry for rambling, its been a long time coming.
