I was also getting horrible gas that started in the afternoon - it was my Protein bar in the morning. I guess that I am sensitive to sugar alcohol because once I switch to a brand without the sugar alcohol the gas went away. I think your 50 lb loss is awsome and you should be proud of yourself!! We may be a little slower but in the end we are a little firmer. Good luck,

Question: Can we have a cocktail?
-
There's no easy answer to this other than to just not drink so much. Space your drinks out with Water or diet coke or whatever you liek that has no calories. Stick with lower calorie drinks like wine spritzers or light beer. I find with alcohol it makes me not care any more about what I eat - and that's not with getting tipsy or drunk that's just after a glass or two. We've had a few bottles of wine open round here lately, I've had a glass almost every night with dinner and voila! Weight loss stopped. Its deadly when you're trying to lose and needs to be a very occasional one or two only really. That sucks when you're at that time of life when everyone is out drinking and its a big part of the weekend. But you cant fool your body, you just have to cut down on it to lose weight.

Socializing...aka alcohol.
justplaintired commented on justplaintired's blog entry in justplaintired's Blog
I know I don't need to drink and I plan on making good choices. I just know it will be a little bit hard when everyone else is drinking and eating and I'm sorta sitting there. I was told carbonated drinks are out and the only carbonated drink I have is beer....so non-alcoholic beer won't work. I was also told that you cannot gulp water...that you have to sip and you cannot use a straw? This is from NUT clases. The most important thing to me is that I am successful with this band. I am not happy or healthy being obese and able to eat/drink everything so I am going to have to make lots of changes. I appreciate the suggestion for drinking the protein drink, etc. My life will be changing in so many ways. :-) It's all good! Thanks for all of your replies! -
How about ordering sparkling water with a twist of lime and tell everyone you are drinking gin? No one will know that you aren't drinking alcohol, and you are not consuming empty calories. You can then act wild and crazy without the booze and no one with notice.

HELP!! Sabotaging Myself With Booze!!!
lady in red replied to Xann77's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I can't drink alcohol at all because I never had a stopping point like most other people. I often used to envy those that could drink 1 or 2 and stop. That was not a possibilty for me. The same held true for drugs and later with food. I guess being an "overdoer" means moderation is an impossibility for some of us. I know that some of the others banders I know say that a "seabreeze" is excellent for the waistline. This consists of vodka and cranberry juice. Then there's always a martini flavored any way you like with vodka or gin. Oh yeah, by the way, I used to be a bartender. One of the banders at my doctor's office has lost 160 lb.s so far and said she drinks corona light because it has less carbonation than other beer. Whatever you decide, the very best to you. See ya! -
Hi everyone, Just found this site and have to say it's awesome - reading the threads is great. I have my first appointment with the doctor in two days on the 25th. There are a few things I'm concerned about before I commit myself to the lapband surgery though. Can anyone tell me: - I like to exercise a lot. Is it true gulping Water can make you throw up? What do you do when you're exercising hard and need to drink a lot? - I'm 21 and love a couple of wines at the pub with my friends on a Saturday night. Can you still drink alcohol after the lap band?? If anyone could help me out with some answers I would really appreciate it!!

Suicidal thoughts with obesity?
FuelMan replied to princess_n_thep's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I totally agree with the "Gentlespirit". When we have had enough of life by cause of a incurable disease, it is time to go. Not all of us can do this, but...... the ones that choose to take the final exit, should be able to go with friends and loved one's around. My best friend in the world had to go out alone. He had AIDS and it came to a point where living was tuffer then fighting the disease. He fought it as hard as he could for years, and finely after a year in bed with all kinds of illnesses due to the AIDS, He took the last step. That was back in 86' when there was not much you could do about AIDS but wait. Even after all these years I am still heart broken over this. He had no one to support him as he slipped away, no one to hold his hand, and make him feel a little comfortable. He was so afraid we would get into trouble over this. I blame society for this. We are so ill prepared for the end. In my 25 years clean from drugs and alcohol, I have dealt with a lot of death. Burying many friends, due to AIDS or overdose. And I see just how unprepared we are. My mother-in-law is dyeing because of her lungs, and she is scared senseless, I try and comfortable her but there is no dealing with her. When she finally goes she will be out of her mind with fear. Shame on the medical industry, they hype us up thinking we can live forever, with enough drugs. And they charge by the day, pumping more and more drugs, and more test at the cost of our......... what? Money? Insurance? Peace of Mind? Sorry about the rant but I am so upset at how the "West" deals with death. We are all going to die, we might as well get use to it from the beginning, dealing with it in a spiritually manner. I guess this has nothing to do with WLS, or losing weight, but...... I still say "If you are sick enough to eat yourself into Morbid Obesity, you are digging your own grave a forkful at a time".Butch -
Hello, and welcome! I have not been banded yet, so my answers are based on what I have learned from my surgeon, and other banders on here. As you get closer to restriction, and your band gets tighter, it will be harder (if not impossible) to chug Water or other liquids. As for wine, and other alcohol, I look at it this way, the lap band is for life so you have to learn how to fit it into a lifestyle that can be maintained, and although most doctors will tell you that you shouldn't comsume alcohol (liquid calories) I absolutely plan to from time to time. I'm only 24, and well my friends like to go out and have a good time, so will I comsume alcohol, absolutely! I've also heard somewhere here that the "buzz" sets on faster after banding, I assume it has something to do with less food in your stomach. Hope this helps a little.

Thank you guys for all your suggestions. I had the last of my pre-op retesting today and everything is fine. :banana I'm a go on Thursday barring anything else getting in the way. Ryan I had that sandpaper and alcohol thingy today! Ouch! Turned out okay though so I guess the irritation was worth it. Three more days and counting.

Anyone Eating & Drinking At The Same Time?
chad2rad replied to NJSleeveboy's topic in Food and Nutrition
Used to have a cocktail at dinner on a regular basis at home or while out (may be more later too, but that is another topic) I guess if it is not causing you pain and discomfort now, you are likely okay, but at a later date you may or may not be able to change its effects if something changes. Unlike Water, alcohol especially liquor, can add up empty calories rather quickly with our knowledge. Could later contribute to stalls, gains or slow progress. It is human nature to relax on portions, intake ect and count it all the same as when we where more focused. So at this point I am staying away from cocktails. I am only 2 weeks out though. Set yourself up for a win and make it work for you Best of luck, glad u are enjoying life -
please tell me the truth
Bryan Graeve replied to itsmekarenlee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I've been drinking wine and gin-tonics starting at 2 months post-op (yeah I'm a bad boy). Haven't had any issues at all, other than a lower alcohol tolerance -
I don't really consider it cheating if I have a really small scoop of carb smart ice cream and then stop at that. You will need to decide if you can handle just something small like that. It really depends if you have an eating disorder (binge, addiction) or not. I got sugar free popsicles and eat them daily. I also got some sugar free candies and limit myself to 2 a day because the sugar alcohol can cause stomach discomfort. I had to completely cut off any kind of regular candy - chocolate was my nemesis. I won't eat that again. Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 198 GW 135

How Long Before I Can Drive?
VACookey replied to topgun's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wasn't given any restrictions but I restricted myself while I was on Vicodin. If you're on pain meds and you drive, you're driving while under the influence and can get in serious trouble. It's just like alcohol. So if you're off meds, you should be fine. -
As long as your in weight loss mode your shouldnt drink. Alcohol reduces an enzime in your body required to breakdown the fat you want to lose for 3 days. That's right one drinks significantly reduces your weight loss for 3 days. In essence, slows your weight loss down to half. Personally I dont think 20 year olds have enough experience in life to handle the mental pressure of bariatric surgery. I know I would not have for exactly what your concerned about, drinking. Good luck on your journey. Also leaving your comfort zone 3 days after surgery would not be my first choice.

Liquor, Wine or Beer: Alcohol effects
CanyonBaby replied to inkmartyr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry, I can't tell you the effect it has on me because I'm too scared to try it, and here's why: I got this write-up from my dietician on liquid calories: "Alcohol is dangerous because it has more concentrated number of calories per serving than other carbohydrate. Carbohydrate has only 4kcals per gram. Alcohol is 7kcals per gram. Calorie content varies tremendously because of the other ingredients (sweeteners and such) and the concentration of alcohol." Not worth it to me. My "buzz" is from my successful weight loss! -
Liquor, Wine or Beer: Alcohol effects
ThinnieMinnie2B replied to inkmartyr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just had my 3 month post op checkup and my surgeon cleared me for alcoholic beverages. He stressed moderation and cautioned getting drunk faster. I had a few sips of my hubby's beer 2 months post op. No issues but apparently my tastes have changed because it was gross. -
"No, Sharon Tate nor Abigail Folger will come back to life if the killers are executed, but their families would not have to relive their murders every few years by having to go to the parole hearings tryin to keep them in prison." The families do not need to keep going back for parole hearings, they want to. Their need for vengeance is keeping them in Hell and ruining their lives, and is self destructive You may have noticed how the Amish welcomed the family of the killer of the 7 school children into their homes. They could have acted like most Americans and shunned them, but they forgave. Forgiveness is too often preached, but very seldom practiced. The families who dedicate their lives to parole hearings are killing themselves in a possibly subconscious attempt to join their deceased love ones. I watched a documentary once about a family in which a little girl watched a family friend kill her mother in their home. The other children and their father were not home. The man was sentenced to life in jail. The two other children and their father dedicated their lives to making sure the murderer would never be paroled, while the girl who was the witness moved away and flushed vengeance (and hate) from her mind. She is living a descent life. The father and her two sibling have all had bouts of alcohol and drug related problems including multiple failed marriages. Hatred truly harms the hater, while the hated is not effected.

I am Banded finally

BaraaMehdar replied to BaraaMehdar's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
about the pre-op diet: the doctor told me i should only drink liquids one day before the surgery and thats it!! may be because of my age and the fact that i never drank alcohol in my life my liver was not enlarged so much but thats only what i think, i didn't get the chance to ask the doctor -
Pretty sure I f***ed up the sleeve. No leak, but I might as well have never gotten it.

I didn't read the rest of the thread and just read the initial post but it sounds like you may need direct counseling rather than a support group. You may be addicted to food and alcohol. -
Drinking Alcohol After Being Banded?
MaggieB replied to SarahCasey's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You can still drink alcohol. I choose not to - too many calories. Most of the time I am too full. I have issues with beer due to the carbonation - makes me feel bloated and uncomfortable, I get the same feeling with sodas. -
Drinking Alcohol After Being Banded?
JavaKing replied to SarahCasey's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Lets do the math on this. (The calorie count is rough) Beer in general has 150 Calories per serving. Light Beer Calories 100 Extra Light beer has 64 Hard Liquor has 60 Wine has 120 IPA Beer has about 250 Calories Sweet Drinks such as Mikes Hard Lemonade etc about 250 Calories If you have about 10 IPA Beers per week that is a potential extra pound of weight loss you could have had but the reality you gained it as you didn't loose it because of the alcohol. Can you drink alcohol? It is not recommended. you will loose weight much faster if you don't. -
Drinking Alcohol After Being Banded?
kll724 replied to SarahCasey's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't drink alcohol, much. But he couple times I have had a drink, it goes to my head quicker. I have lost 100 lbs, so size makes a difference. But 1 drink, gives me a buzz. I had a Bud light on tap watching football yesterday, just one was all that I could drink. So, my answer is "yes" it affects you differently. I have been banded for 1 year. Karen(kll724)
