    4 Months Post Op Diet

I am almost 5 months out (I was sleeved 3/5/12) and I'm trying to keep my caloric intake between 700-900, although I am not strict. Some days I do 500 (rare but it does happen), most days it's 700-800. I work out 6 days a week, usually burning 350 calories minimally but more like 600-700. You are welcome to friend me on myfitnesspal and see what I do, I do publish my journals (although I use the disclaimer now to say I am not perfect. I do sneak in my chocolate or whatnots here and there... hey I'm sleeved, not dead ok?). I do still have a drink once in a blue moon and cheesecake or whatever, but yes, following a low carb/high protein/low fat diet with exercise into my usual routine seems to be working for me, as well as logging what I eat in myfitnesspal (I do that EVERY day). Best of luck to you all! always...
  2. I was banded on May 1st and hit my first plateau on May 11th. I was sssssooooooo disappointed. But the good news is, after three weeks of a plateau, I finally started losing again. I lost 6 lbs last week. I read on another post that you should concentrate on your Water and Protein and boy did it make a difference. I was very sincere about documenting my food and water intake making sure to get between 60 and 80 grams of protein everyday. I noticed that I was eating more calories by watching the protein but the weight just flew right off. That's my new plan, FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS on protein and water. To date I have lost 18.5 lbs and can't wait to weight again soon. Good luck to all.

    Stall

Hi, I had the RNY surgery on June 23. I've lost 50lbs since then, but now I seem to be at a standstill. Is this normal, should I worry about it? I haven't lost any weight in over a week so I'm worried now. I do know my appetite is a little weird right now because I've been on antibiotics for a month.
  4. Hi Kristal, I'm booked in to be banded by Dr Chris on the 26th January in Belgium. I have spoke with some people who have been banded by him already. They have said he is very good and that it is the best decision they made. They said the hospital is very clean and professional so I dont have any worries on that side. I've been thinking of getting this done for the past two years and finally booked the date last week. Nervous but excited. I'm travelling over from Ireland to get it done. If you want to add me as a friend I'd love to be able to keep in touch with you to find out how you got on and to let you know how it goes for me..

    Oh yeah, life is good!

Melting away this week, but I'm not complaining. I love being in the 160's. Today I hit an all time low, or the lowest I have been in 18 years! I weighed in at 167.7 - I love it! My last fill is really working, I'm satisfied on a small amount of food, but yet I can eat anything and don't have problems with PBing. I think this is the "sweet spot", the only thing I kinda have problems with is ice cold drinks, I have to slow down on those. Yes, Life is good in the band world right now.

What is the preferred Vit D?

Some studies have shown that D3 is better absorbed by our bodies than D2. When doctors prescribe Vitamin D, it is typically D2 however. I personally was prescribed Vitamin D for a very substantial deficiency and switched to an OTC supplement of Vitamin D3 after finishing my first Rx bottle because it was cheaper. The same studies that show D3 is better absorbed also seem to indicate that you need about 1/3 the IUs of D3 to match D2. So instead of taking 15000 IUs of Vitamin D2 once a week, I take 5000 IUs of Vitamin D3 once a week. My deficiency is almost gone after 6 months and my PCP is pleased. Definitely be careful with Vitamin D, however. It can be toxic if taken in high doses. The recommended average intake is 200 IU/day. Vitamin D supplements with a few thousand IU are not intended to be taken every day! It might be worthwhile to visit your PCP and have them do a Vitamin D blood test so you can know if you are deficient. Then you can get an accurate dosage from your doctor to address your personal needs. Vitamin D deficiency has recently come to the forefront since recent studies have found that lots of people are significantly deficient these days, so a lot of doctors are now aware of it and checking for it even routinely. That's how my doctor caught me! Check out the wikipedia for more info on Vitamin D in general: Cholecalciferol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Risk of a leak?

I am like 99% sure your dietitian is wrong. My surgeon said leaks will happen rarely and if they do, it will be in the following weeks after having the surgery. He made no mention of it being something to worry over for the rest of your life. And the idea that you could actually stuff enough food into your stomach to cause a leak let alone stretch the stomach (another one I see frequently on here) is pretty much impossible unless you like forcing food to the point of feeling like you're going to explode. You'd feel horrible way before you got to the bursting point, and you'd be vomiting up quite a bit of food so yeah, not likely to happen. Seriously, this is so small a likelihood, I'd actually discuss what the dietitian is telling you with your surgeon ASAP so they can reassure you, and also correct the dietitian from spreading this kind of false information.

    No Pre-Op Diet

I only had one day of a preop diet - the day before my surgery. But after surgery I was on a liquid diet for three weeks. Dave
  9. Avocado is a pretty fatty food to start with for a sleever. Maybe wait a couple of weeks and try that one again. In fact, that's good advice for any food that makes you slime, vomit, or hurt. Starting mushies is an experiment in what works for you, and everyone is slightly different. I started with eggs, pureed meat, refried Beans and instant taters. And I still haven't tried much beef except for beef stew meat that has been cooked to a very soft consitency. I had some cube steak this past week and it's been okay, but I'll be three months post-op tomorrow. The sleeve gets full very quickly, especially during the first few weeks. One of the reasons we are told to slow down and eat super slow is to help us avoid over-filling the sleeve. There's nothing worse than wolfing down some "small" amount of food, only to start having pain a few minutes after. My doc recommends eating very tiny bites, chewing them to applesauce consistency and waiting for a minute or so between those bites. Since our sleeves are still swollen, this helps to avoid the slimes or that horrible over-full feeling. At 3 months out, I can eat a whole egg and a piece of sausage, but at 3 WEEKS out, I could barely eat 3/4 of a scrambled egg. The sausage would have made me physically ill. Keep trying and follow your guidelines on what to eat. It will get better and easier, but it will take a little time.
  10. LML and I had the same surgeon, and he's got a pretty specific list of food that you can have each week, or his Nut does, anyway. I think the reason that your menu suggestions change is that you are going to graduate from softer foods that are easy to digest, and add in foods that are tougher on the tummy each week. So, week 3 might include really soft foods like mashed potatos and soft fish, both of which digest easily. So, week 3 has foods that don't require lots of chewing to get them soft enough, applesauce consistency. Then week 4 adds in slightly tougher foods, as do weeks 5 and 6. Look at your food suggestions by how soft and easy to digest the foods are. Remember, your sleeve is still healing. Your goal with food is to get in your nutrition, but you should be very careful that you don't make the sleeve work really hard to digest something that's really tough. And, for the most part, your sleeve will reject food that's too tough or too much volume. At worst, if you do get it down, you'll have a classic tummy ache that will remind you not to eat that food again. Definitely ask your doc, but I think he'll tell you something similar to the above information. If he says it's okay to eat from any of the lists, then, of course, you should do what he says. I'm not a doctor. Good luck on your journey!!

    New here and wanting advice.

Sounds like you are not sitting around eating! Welcome to the group. Fifteen or maybe more years ago I followed my poor husband to WL seminars. If he had known about the sleeve back then I think how wonderful it would have been for him. However it is never too late, as we were sleeved at 67, three years ago. Best of luck!

    T-minus 12 days

Load up on vitamin c and stay as far away from sick people as possible! I practically kept myself in a bubble the 2 weeks before surgery--its one of the downfalls of having surgery in the cold and flu season! Best of luck with the pre-op diet (if you have one)!

    Chinese

The Chinese place near my work has 'diet delight' meals - plain rice, Chinese veggies, with chicken, beef, scallops, or shrimp (or a combination of these) with your choice of sauce on the side. A girl at work and I got it last week. I had a scallop, a shrimp, and a couple little chicken strips with some veggies, drizzled with a little Chinese hot sauce. It was good, just enough, and my friend didn't even miss the little I took!

Should this still hurt this much?

Sweetdreams, I know exactly what your talking about.. I am now 9 weeks today out of surgery. My pain lasted for two weeks and then on the day of my two week check up I was in the shower and I felt something POP and the indention on my left side was popped out and NO PAIN!!... I mean i was on pain meds the whole two weeks after sugery and had to wear a binder around my stomach, or the pain would just tear threw me. I couldnt be left alone because I have an english mastiff who will try to get in my lap and I didnt have the strenght to push him away. I couldnt stand up straight, an the binder caused a rash that itched like no bodies business. Heck it was still there two weeks after the pop. I kept Gold Bond Medicated powder in business during that month. But just know that each day got better and one day it will just disapear with the POP... and no the pop didnt hurt thank goodness.. I asked about this at my doctors and she said it was normal and that several patients had this issue. Once it popped I did not need any more pain meds at all.

    Do you count vitamin calories?

I am three weeks out and I am lucky if I consume 300 calories per day. I feel satisfied with 200-300 calories. I don't count my vitamins either. It's amazing how different I feel about food now. It's like night and day! I had a stall during week two and didn't lose anything for 6 days. So far I have lost 27 pounds.
  19. I love Dr. Chae. He is an awesome doctor! You're getting sleeved this week? You must be so excited to start your new life.

    Exercise Question

I am 9 weeks out today, and the guidance from my nut was to be at 800 calories at this point. , I exercise 3-4 times a week. 30 minutes of hard cardio. Then do machines for lower body.. Also swimming laps. I could not do this on a 500calorie diet, . Seems as though u need to increase your calories. And protein grams Don't be afraid and try it. I am losing consistently . Last week 3 pounds. I am currently at 800 calories and target grams 70-75 ..this suggestion may help u.
  21. I am 11 days out form bypass surgery. I love my new life already! The only issue I am having is no energy a all. Everything exhausts me! I am on at least 4 oz protein liquid every hour and liquid in between for 2 weeks post op. Anyone else have this problem and what did you do? Thanks!
  22. KittyKat848

    Just out of curiosity...

    I am 14 weeks post-op. I average between 450 and 600 calories, 30 g carbs, and 80-90 grams of Protein per day.
  23. @@del112 - in about 2-3 weeks this will seem like a distant memory, and the scale numbers should help bring your future into focus!

    External Reviewer?

I was denied from BCBS IL - I sent in my appeal and withing 2 weeks - the exteranl board of doctors approved it : "Reason: Approval is based upon recommendations by an external peer review, after consideration of the member's individual clinical circumstances." I called the phone number on the lettter I received that said it was sent to the revies board - and was told a week before I received the letter that it was ok. Lou
  25. 9 lbs a month is good. 1lb in two weeks is nothing to panic about if you eventually get a drop. I revised to rny and I was told it would be slower that newly wls folks. I'm losing faster than expected and they were shocked. My current rate is about 9lbs a month and I expect that to really slow very soon. I think your dr may need to come on here and read the thousands of posts about the week 3 stall. That he told you to start jogging is absurd. Please check out dr. Matthew weiner on YouTube if you are looking for reasonable post op diet and exercise recommendations. He also talks about why people lose at different rates etc.
