    Duodenal Switch with heart failure

Likewise, I can't offer specifics for your condition, but this should be worked out between the surgeon and your cardioligist. Most of the surgeons who get into the DS these days are top notch, as it is a more complex procedure than most of the other WLS and it takes time and resources to develop, and maintain, those skills. An option that may be suggested if your condition warrants it is to do the DS as a two step procedure, doing the VSG part of it first and then the intestinal switch part later after you have lost some of your weight and are stronger. This is sometimes done in cases where they don't want to put the patient through a lengthy anesthesia. The VSG can usually be done in about an hour or less, while the whole DS may typically take three hours or so, but occasionally 6-7 in complex cases, It doesn't seem to be done much as it was 10-15 years ago as the state of the art has improved over the years with reduced surgical times and better anesthesia care, but is still used in some cases.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

It's so good to see how well everyone is doing 6 months out. So interesting hearing about how everyone is eating now, the challenges, and how friends/family are reacting. I am trying to get the last few pound off to reach goal and then would like to go down 5-7 more, just to add some wiggle room. Once I reach goal, I never want to see the 150's again. My mom and daughter weigh between 140-150 and they are actually feeling a little threatened! They have never really known me as anything but heavy, and although they are happy for me, it seems that they (my daughter, especially) are feeling a bit odd about me possibly weighing less than them. I discovered a little life saver tip. I have several 70-100 calorie snacks I make and freeze, and then when I might be tempted to grab something not so good, I can grab and nuke one of these. They are also a good supplement to any meal or to stave off the hungries on their own. 1) Mini quiches (made in cupcake tins. No crust, Made with eggs, milk, onion, mushrooms, cheese, broccoli and a few cubes of gluten free stuffing mix.) 80 cal, 3 gm protein. (Good cold or hot.) 2) Turkey meatballs. (made with ground turkey, shredded zucchinni, eggs, onion, finely ground GF dressing cubes instead of cracker or bread crumbs). 100 cal, 6 gm protein. (Good cold or hot.) 3) Pumpkin custard squares (made with pumpkin, eggs, milk, spices and a little monkfruit sweetener.) 100 cal, 3 gm protein. (Just kept in fridge and eaten cold.) 4) I also keep a pot of turkey/veg soup in the fridge. I cup only has 50 calories, 6 gm protein. A good way to get in a lot of veggies. It is very filling if I am feeling a bit hungry. 5) My final little treat is a sweet one that I use sometimes in the evening. It is the only sweet splurge I allow myself, and I have no sweet cravings. 1 TBS 72% cacao chips with 1 TBS (10 )raw almonds. Yum!!! 150 calories, 4 gm protein. Best wishes to all the Feb 2019 buddies, as we approach the final stretch! Hugs to all.

  4. Hi all, Today is my 2nd day back at work, I've had no issues. I'm still struggling to get my water in daily. I'm doing protein shakes for breakfast and lunch and pureed protein for dinner. I haven't lost any weight this week but from what I've learned it's common. I'll stay the course and wait it out. Being back at work means I get to go up 3 flights 6x a day. It's great excercise. I've been walking on breaks and lunch even though it's been miserably hot here in Tampa, FL. Hope all my surgery siblings are doing well [emoji847] 5'4" Starting weight 297 VSG on 7/31/19 265 CW 250 GW 135 Sent from my [samsung Galaxy] using BariatricPal mobile app

    Stall in loss

I'm in the same boat. I'll be 10 months post op this weekend and have 10 more pounds to get to my goal weight. Things have come to a screeching halt the last 6 weeks. I'm eating on plan, exercising, and keeping at 1000 calories per day, as my program requires. At 160 pounds, I should still be losing at a good clip if I'm eating 1000 calories per day, since my total daily energy expenditure is about 1700 calories. But it's not really coming off. I have loosened my intermittent fasting restrictions lately as I bumped up my calories because it was hard to get it all in, and I feel like that is also slowing my loss, but I simply can't get in 1000 calories per day without spreading my eating out more. I may try the alternate day restriction that another user suggested!
  7. I have noticed that as I get further out from the surgery (10 months out this weekend) I am more susceptible to those less-than-satisfying foods, so I try to be cognizant of that. I love my Premier shakes to get my protein in on a rough day, but those do almost nothing to satisfy me now, where a few months ago they would have kept me full for a few hours. Unfortunately, my current issue seems to be more about compulsion and head hunger than any real satiety issues.
  8. Hi everyone! Does anyone know the best way to get ur fluids in to meet the 64 oz of fluid. I had the gastric bypass on 8/8/19 and its hard trying to keep up and very overwhelming. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

    New food intolerances after revision?

I find that I can't have the protein bars or shakes that I relied on before and after VSG. Now, they are too sweet and (sorry, TMI) I almost immediately get the shakes (dumping) and will probably have to run to the bathroom. And really, that's what's changed the most after my revision to RNY - I haven't had more than maybe 5 normal BMs in 19 months.

    Two week anniversary

It has been two weeks and I've met my first "mini" goal! Yes, I've missed food but I also want this very bad. I had my follow up and staple removal yesterday and was told no wine for my birthday, in September, but a small glass for my husband's in December would be ok. I have to remember I didn't get in this weight mess in two weeks and it won't go away in two weeks. It is a journey, I know this as I made this trip with the lap band 10 years ago. I also realize when you are as large as I was no one will notice until I lose a lot! The little victories that I have noticed, both feet easily go on the scale, I can go up the front steps without pulling myself up, my knees hurt less. I will take these victories and celebrate. My husband is very supportive and I have to remember that he also has the right to eat what he would normally eat. He has stepped up and is learning to make his meals himself, that is pretty funny as he's never cooked. I am in a good place today. For those that are starting out, there are good days and there are small victories you can do it.

    Freakish Restriction???

I wish for relief from true hunger pains and that you get the restriction. While you are waiting your 10 week countdown, you can read accounts from other post-op newbies who mess up like me and hopefully you will be a much savvier post-op WLS patient!!

    💜AUGUST 2019 CHALLENGE💜

OH my gosh..1 semi on topic post (from me): Was feeling really bad after the egg saga but still went with youngest daughter to Sam's as our heat index was like 110 and we've been trying to get together a few times a week to walk. We walked for about 1 hr and 45 mins. She really has to stop to see everything. I take off with the cart, holding my water and my 10 lb purse..and I've warned her that it actually hurts me knee and back more to stand in one place for too long...plus I want a more forceful walk effort..
  17. I also took your post as a conversation starter. That is a big issue sometimes with all of this 'written communication' is interpretation of tone and intent sometimes. My answers to your inquiry are as follows: 1) Vitamin query - I'm still on vitamin patches only and I have had 1 day each week where I've forgotten to put on a new patch. The 2nd time I forgot, I was back at the hospital getting IV fluids and find out my blood thinning levels were way too high. I let the vitamin patch slide when I got home as I momentarily was simply overwhelmed. I also have huge invested interest in trying to do anything to stave off as much hair loss as possible. I understand that I can still do all the very SMALL things that MAY have a slight impact (or not) on trying to reduce hair loss and it may not matter one iota. However, I will at least know that I did all that anyone has suggested/can think of/ dr input/ veteran input, etc. In the end, what will come...will come. And probably on Month 4 when I'm on a cruise ship! 2) Regarding NSAID's - ABSOLUTEY not cuz am on a blood thinner so I've been used to avoiding these since 2011. It would be a great threat to me physically, especially these days. I also remember a woman I worked with for 10 yrs who downed multiple doses of Ibuprofen throughout the day..way more than suggested & ended up with MAJOR issues in the hospital with her stomach/intestines and that sticks in the back of my mind. 3) Eating out - too afraid & am supposed to just start purees tomorrow. After my experience today, am going to throttle that back & talk to Dr. When time comes that I felt am ok with eating out, I'll go to places where I know I can order a healthy/clean meal. This is an area I identified as potential weakness as my emotional/mental wellbeing needs more work. I do however follow a fun thread of BEFORE & AFTER food/meal pics and have learned a lot of easy things. Also learned that I'm online with some AMAZINGLY gifted cooks and meal 'wonder workers'. There are also ppl like Fluffychix and others that will help out with ppl seeking easier ways to get their meals at home. One mental/or experience advantage I have is that I was a member of AA/NA for many yrs and I still keep at heart the warning to stay away from people, places and things that can jeopardize my 12 step program or 'insert goal here' Err..I forgot the other questions! LOL

    Freakish Restriction???

Yes, bypass. It is much better now, but then, I am also relearning how to eat - to slow down and take smaller bites and much smaller portions. It has taken a while for my eyes to catch up with the new tummy. Before surgery, I had no sense of fullness. I could eat and eat and eat and never stop. The surgery has definitely given me the fullness very quickly, but I had to learn what that felt like and how to stop BEFORE feeling full, because if I ate until I was just feeling full, 10 minutes later I would be in agony. I am learning how to eat like a normal person who naturally stops when they've had enough.
  19. OK, I got approval from dr. today to have 1 scrambled egg today and basically start pureed stage tomorrow (couple of days early). I scrambled it in olive oil spray and ate it as slowly as I ever ate anything...carefully chewing it to bits. My stomach was still growling (true hunger growling) but I figured the egg would settle in and that would be that. Instead about 15 mins..maybe 10..after the last bite, I felt the restriction kick in like I had just inhaled an entire protein shake. I have never felt the restriction discomfort as I've been on full liquids and have been very cautious..but I felt it last week badly..and it was when I stupidly made one of my protein shakes into more of a 'pudding' which I should not have done. My dr. did not say 'full liquids' AND puddings...he said full liquids, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles. I didn't even finish the entire 'pudding/shake' as it hit me suddenly I was FULL...MORE THAN FULL...OH MY GOSH IT FEELS LIKE A NOOSE AROUND MY POUCH FULL. Ended up throwing up. Was miserable...and what a lesson learned. Well, I tried to be uber careful with the egg as 'pudding-gate' is firmly entrenched in my mind. After 15 mins of eating I had that awful feeling again..not even a SUGGESTION that I'm getting 'full'..just hard core full out stop. Now it's been...4+ hrs since then and all I can still feel is that restricted feeling. Even drinking water makes my stomach hurt..is this normal? This is part of how I got so dehydrated last week. I am not even looking forward to pureed items right now as the restricted feeling has lasted afternoon into evening...I had an upper GI scan last week and no leaks observed, etc. Do some ppl have particularly 'tight restrictions'? Does that even make sense or is this normal and I should have stopped @ half an egg?
  20. Wow it's starting to get real.. Not too long now until surgery day.. Still got a few things to deal with first but it's got me a little anxious I need to start making changes soon to my diet and cut out the sugar and energy drinks soon Still got about 10 weeks to go but feels closer every day. I'm very well prepared stocked up on protein powders and tuna cans also got myself an exercise bike Got a few appointments lined up before surgery can't believe how real its feeling now and I just hope everything goes smoothly and time flies by for me so then I can begin my new life; lose weight get healthy again I'm so glad there's tons of people on this site going through the same process!! thank you all for your support!

    Bypass or Sleeve

Had the sleeve in 2017 /Converted to bypass 2019 I really don't see a difference yet between the two (except all the issues are resolved & when labs are done in a few weeks I'll compare) but as far as lifestyle... Same so far
  22. I had open Gastric Bypass in March 2003. In St Louis Missouri. That was the closest place to me that was doing the surgery. Lost 148 pounds. Kept it off for about 9 years. I gained about 90 pounds back. A week ago, Monday, August 5th, 2019 I had revision from RNY to Distal. I’ve lost 12 pounds. I’m still on liquids until Friday when I see my surgeon.
  23. I also would have been very nervous if i looked through people's food logs. I was never going to eat only protein 5x a day, i needed vegetarian options too and those by virtue are high carb/cal. I really only gave up the things my Team told me to: carbonation, alcohol (I don't drink anyway) excess sugar, then caffeine, bread pasta & rice (I dont care for pasta or rice so... NBD) for the first 6 months. And even then they gave me wiggle room for my Roman Holiday at 4 months post op. I was told sure eat pizza, but get protein too. So I ate pizza pasta & gelato nonstop for 2 weeks and pastries crossaints, fried chicken tenders and kebab for 10 more days in Paris (only the panna cotta bothered me- the fabled Parisian dumping incident). Lost weight. I made tons substitutions stateside for healthier versions of things and i will eat (or drink 😂) a salad in a min because i actually like them. But im satified that none of my choices make me anxious. I really really value that freedom. Maybe its because I've never dieted before or maybe its a personality flaw, but i find the idea of constantly dieting or diet mode after surgery not a good fit for me which is why my MPF page is super lonely these days.
