  1. I just wanted to give everyone an update. I met with my surgeon this morning and he is as devastated as I am. He said that this is the 5th time this has happened to him and he has done well over 500 surgeries. He also said that he started using dissovable sutures for stitching the port and since he started that, I am the 2nd person who has had a flipped port. So, he is switching back to regular sutures. He told me that I ruined his week. I was like "YOUR WEEK!!" He was kidding, but pretty upset with the situation. My revision surgery is scheduled for the 28th!
  2. I am doing well, seem to be progressing nicely. My weight loss has been a little slower than some, but I've heard this is common with revisions. Since stating my 2-week preop edit on 5/9 I am down 23 pounds.
  3. I had two barium swallow tests that showed my band was in perfect position, but I was still tossing up most of what I ate, so my surgeon said I had to get it removed, and he would do an RNY in the same surgery. He likes to do it in one surgery if he can...less cost and one less chance for anaesthesia complications. He thinks the bypass is actually better to do than the sleeve on a one-surgery revision. Well, he got in there, and my band HAD slipped, and on top of that I had a hiatal hernia! When he cam to see me after the procedure I asked him why everything looked good on the xrays, he said it's not uncommon for slips and hernias not to show up on the xrays.
  4. Ever since I was a kid I've always heard that the faster you lose weight, the unhealthier it is and the faster you'll gain it back, not to mention you will only lose so much weight. While in the car yesterday, I was listening to KLove radio (a Christian radio station) and they had some weightloss stats from Wake Forest University nutrition program: 1. The fallacy that the faster you lose weight the easier it is to gain it back is untrue. Actually, the faster you lose, the more % of your excess body fat you'll lose. And you will no more gain it back than if you lose it slower. So that debunks the prior school of thought. 2. Eating after 7 pm will slow down your metabolism. I knew this one was false and argued it on many occasion. How does your body know what time it is? Your body works on a 24 hr clock, not just waking hours. 3. And my favorite (can't believe people actually think this): That muscle will turn into fat. Muscle is muscle, fat is fat. It's like trying to turn a bear into a tiger. one has nothing to do with the other. So us wls losers actually have a better chance of losing MORE weight in the long run than people who lose slower. Can we all know that the rate of loss has nothing to do with saggy skin. Thats 85% heredity and 15% luck (oh, and I think age plays a part too, the younger the better). It has nothing to do with exercising, expensive creams, or the rate of loss. While I'm losing pretty slowly (only 17 lbs in 7 weeks), I started at 174 (band to sleeve revision) so I knew it would come off a little slower. So lose away and don't worry that you're losing too fast. Eventually your body will slow down the closer you come to goal anyway!

    liquid diet

I had to do the liquid diet before my band surgery for 10 days and it was tough but I knew I had to do it because my surgeon said if I cheated at all he would know and would not complete the surgery. I have a new doctor that will be removing my band and revising to the gastric bypass on April 8 and said there is no need for a pre op diet out the liquid diet. I an doing a pre op diet on my own right now and will do the liquid diet anyway because it shrinks your liver to give the doctor more room to work. Also if the knick your liver because it's in the way, you can die. To each his own I guess and I know the importance of this and that out helps you prepare for what's about to happen to you so I will be doing this anyways.
  6. Marfar -- I'm wondering if you're hitting all of your basic goals at this point, and if adjusting to that first might produce the results you want. I've watched your posts for a while now, and I've seen you say you revised to the sleeve to be able to eat what you want and not feel like you're on a diet. I also know you eat out a fair bit (based on your posts), and I'm just wondering if these months out you're still tracking calories and macronutrients. My family eats out a fair amount, and those restaurant calories are so sneaky! Perhaps add back some shakes to ensure Protein goals are being met, and become more restrictive on calories and carbs until you're losing again.

    Keep Pushing!

Black911, I did water aerobic classes prior to surgery & will again when allowed, now I'm doing short walks (I'm 2 weeks out from Lapband revision with Gastric bypass). What do you think about gentle exercising with sitting & 2lb. wt. lifting (arms)? I'm going to incorporate Tai Chi for Seniors (I have a DVD I ordered online - they show you how to modify in chair, it's WONDERFUL for any age/ability!) 8. I actually had this same question...was going to call my surgeon's office Monday, but it's a holiday. My revision from sleeve to bypass is Tues (29th). Have basically been on pureed soups for a few months....no solids, due to GERD. Planning on doing my full dose of Milk of Magnesia today, because like you, I have had major issues with constipation and for a long time. Was really concerned an whether or not I needed a bowel prep. Not a stupid question at all, thanks for asking it! Good luck with your revision on June 1st...we will be just a couple of days apart.
  9. I just had a revision from sleeve to RNY and I too did not have a bowel prep the night before; just 2 week liquid diet. Truet me when I say, you will be cleared out lol. I had diarrhea multiple times during those 2 weeks. I had regular poop in the beginning and then two liquid poops before surgery date. And besides, we are never fully cleaned out anyhow
  10. Hi Peaches, Well I've been having pain and Dr. Yau needs to get in there, see what's going on, and probably replace the band with a different one. I'm pretty much completely defilled right now, if I fill, I have more pain. I need to get back to a good fill level, I'm eating way too much. I feel out of control. Why did you need revision surgery?
  11. Hi all, I'm 6 weeks out from band to sleeve revision. I started the day before surgery at 174 and I've now lost 17 lbs. The past 10 days or so (yes, I weight everyday. I know, I know) the scale has bounced between 156-158-156-157-156-157-156-157 on and on.I can't really cut back on calories, I'm already under about 700 - 800. I'm thinking it's because I only have 26 lbs left to lose so it's going really slowly. At this rate I won't hit my goal for like a year! I thought it was last 10 lbs that were the hardest to lose. Seems it's the last 26! What to do? Besides be patient...

    I am scared to death

Feeling scared is normal. Just stick to all the surgeon's rules they are to protect you from complications. There is a risk associated with surgery/having the sleeve but the majority of people don't have problems. I'm about to revise to the sleeve from the band. I had problems with the band but I don't regret having that surgery the 60 pounds I lost improved my health and life in ways that make it worth facing the risks associated with surgery. If anything I wish I had just gotten the sleeve in the first place. I was feeling scared before I started the preop diet for the sleeve 2 weeks ago and started using this CBT for weightloss workbook that was really helpful. They recommend doing an excercise where you compare the cost/benefits in the short and long term of losing weight via surgery versus staying the same. They they say to rate what you list from 0 to 100 by how important the item is to you. After I did I realised there are more costs to staying the same then having surgery even when facing potential complications. Also, all the things I really value are long term benefits of having surgery. It made me feel more confident in my decision because I know that doing the surgery is the best way for me to obtain certain things in life that are extremely important to me.
  13. Even though I’m self pay revision, I’m still going through all the appointments like cardio, endocrinologist, Nutritionist, etc. Then I’ll schedule a date.

    No Complications

I would love to hear more about your experience. I am having sleeve to bypass revision and I am nervous too. Much more than I was for the sleeve.
  15. I will be completely honest. RNY is a great surgery. I myself was hoping to do it but I was self pay and just couldn't afford it. It was almost double the price. My nurse said she had RNY patients lose hardly anything compared to sleeve and vice versa. AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU ARE THE "DRIVER" AND YOU WILL CONTROL HOW MUCH YOU LOSE. *To an extent. Obviously your body will retain fluids, hormone changes and some weeks you just stall no matter how hard you try. But if you eat clean, do what you are supposed to and work out you will see good results regardless of which surgery you decide to do. I am not denying people lose weight faster than others. Anyway. Because you only have 85 pounds to lose and you didn't list any problems (diabetes, etc) I would say the sleeve is a great for you. You can choose to do RNY if you prefer, it's your decision, but the sleeve has done wonders for so many people, including myself. I started at 364 and I hit the 50 pound loss mark today after 5 weeks (1 week pre-op included) and I even gained 10 pounds of gas after surgery that took 4 days to lose, LOL. Also, you can have the sleeve revised to a bypass if it doesn't work for you. You don't want to "Settle" when it comes to your body and what you want. This is a major operation and it's life changing. There are also a lot of risks involved with all of the surgeries available. Be passionate about your decision and research a lot. Be aware of risks, the goods, the bads and the uglys. I will admit - I did settle for the sleeve but after awhile of doing more research and getting involved, I was very happy that I chose this instead of RNY.
  16. hello, I was self pay revision from lapband to bypass. My BMI was around 32 (up from 25 when my lapband was unfilled 6 months earlier). The Dr (not my original lapband surgeon) who helped me when I had the complication and required a complete unfill would only take the band out and revise in two stages. I wanted to find a Dr to do it in one stage. So the surgeon I ultimately chose did make me do the psych eval (which was very easy). Also for me personally (because I mentioned my binge eating problems) insisted I also start seeing an eating disorder counselor. Also saw the nutritionist one time and had an ekg and bloodwork. During the appt I thought I wanted a sleeve, but because the damage the band caused to my esophagus he recommended bypass. At first I thought no way, but after thinking it through (and getting a third opinion!) I decided to do the bypass. My initial visit was March 11 and scheduled for surgery April 26 (but due to my conflict it was moved to May 1). Hope this helps Stella
  17. Okay. So I had my sleeve done back in October of 2017. I was doing really well and went down to 185lbs. I’m now back up to 235lbs. August of 2018 my father was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed in May 2019. So I feel of track and 7 days after he passed I found out I was pregnant which was very exciting and yet extremely difficult and I suffered from severe depression and just kinda gave up. I have always had reflux and issues with being sick to my stomach. My pregnancy made it worst and I have yet to lose my pregnancy weight and I feel stuck. So I have been seeing a surgeon about a revision. I’ve had several test done. I had a swallow study which said my esophagus isn’t emptying properly and a gastric emptying study done that came back as saying I have rapid gastric emptying, and my sleeve is only retaining 8% of what I eat in under 60 minutes. My Fluroro was normal and so was my EGD except for some mild gastritis. I just finished my Bravo test ( Ph test) for GERD and it came back as normal . I haven’t seen the surgeon yet, but was under the impression that if this test was normal then I won’t qualify for insurance to cover my revision surgery . I have BCBS Medicaid of Sc. I was wondering if anyone else had similar issues and were still able to get a revision or had any advice? I’m over the reflux and I’m shocked my test is normal.. HELP!..

    When your RNY stops working...

The amount of revisions due to stretching on this forum seem to be a rare occurrence. US national library of medicine link https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4485844/ Conclusion Long-term weight loss in patients following bariatric surgery requires regular and supportive management by qualified health professionals. Based on the literature reviewed, our principal recommendations to optimize long-term weight loss include: ensuring that the patient understands how the procedure works; offering pre- and postoperative education sessions; ensuring the patient utilizes self-monitoring strategies; tailoring nutritional supplements; restraining liquid calories, pureed foods, grazing, and eating out of home; engaging in an average of 60 minutes of physical activity per day; and conducting lifelong annual medical, psychological, and dietary assessments. Stomach stretching? there is a paucity of long-term clinical evidence to describe the rates of occurrence.

    Finding The Right Plastic Surgeon

Here in Melbourne, which I guess is a small city by world standards, I think its pretty well known who the good surgeons are - and some of them become quasi celebrities anyway. There's word of mouth which works well anywhere in the world. I asked for a referral a few years ago to a well known guy but never went ahead with any surgery. This time, since I was also looking to have inguinal hernias repaired, I asked my colorectal surgeon to refer me on for that and to revise the scar from my bowel resection. Given that my colorectal surgeon i very well respected and a leader in his field, I trust that his referral will be to a respectable, well qualified plastic surgeon. I met the guy and liked him and the word of my colorectal surgeon is good enough for me, so I went with it. Perhaps your lapband surgeon can recommend people who work with bariatric patients or you know other people who have had successful surgeries.

    Any DS or Loop/SADI patients?

Hi!!! I am not a revision, I am 5 weeks out and I've lost 38 lbs total. I had 3 comorbidities... Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I also have Rheumatoid arthritis. All are resolved, no insulin or pills. I am so happy about that. I am in Burlington NC. My surgeon was Dr Jon Michael Bruce at Bariatric Specialists of NC. I do not regret my decision at all. I hope this helps you. Best of luck on your journey!!! [emoji1] Sent from my SM-G930VL using BariatricPal mobile app

    LapBand VS Sleeve??

I did a lot of research on the band before I had it and on VSG before I revised. Here are two peer reviewed studies: Comparison of weight loss and body composition cha...[surg Obes Relat Dis. 2009] - PubMed Result A 10-year experience with laparoscopic gastric ban...[Obes Surg. 2006] - PubMed Result I DO believe the band is working for many but I also believe it's failing others who HAVE followed the rules. As they say, there's good and bad in everything.

    New Member, Revised!

Congrats on your revision! Looking forward to hearing more as your journey progresses.
  25. How can I get a revision gastric sleeve approved? Had my surgery August 2018 started at 248 lowest at 170 and now I’m up at 195. I can’t seem to loose any more weight. But I don’t know how I would be able to get a revision.  Any suggestions?
