  1. I'm thinking about getting this sugery but I'm just not sure. I have been trying and trying to loose weight for the past few years and I think that this surgery will give me the help I need. I am in no way looking at it as an easy way out, more like a tool to change my life forever and for good. Everything I have read has seemed pretty positive, that doesn't stop me from being scared though. I just don't know. What are the problems you guys have had? What is the hardest thing about having this surgery? How much success have you had? Would you do it again? Do you tell people that you've had it?

    just got this e-mail!

Thats 41% of my body weight!
  3. I sleep off and on all night long. During the periods I am up, I usually eat something. I know there are physiological reasons why I am compelled to eat during the night, but I am hoping my 1st fill on Wednesday will stop me from being hungry during the night and STOP this terrible habit. It's 2:48 AM and I just had 2 pieces of wheat toast with fake butter on it. I know I must stop eating carbs but I just can't stop. Anyone else an insomniac with similar problems regarding eating during the night? The only reason why (I think) I am not GAINING weight in a serious way is because I do exercise consistently. I NEED that 1st fill!!!!!
  4. I read many years ago in a forum that during your six months of trying to lose weight, which is documented by your doctor, that you must lose a certain amount of weight, but that you can’t lose too much weight in order to be covered by Medicaid. I was wondering how much people have lost who were covered by Medicaid, or if anyone has any kind of idea of how much is too much to lose before getting the surgery?

    Not sure how to feel

dfdscott glad you are not going to change your mind about having surgery - keep that positive mindset your determination is great - good for you!!!! having WLS is wonderful - you will feel so healthy and happy glad your parents and wife are finally trying to be on board the "thing" about "you can loose weight on your pre-op, so just do this on your own"......... if a person has never been in your/our shoes - they couldn't possibly understand how hard/impossible it is for "us" to keep the weight off we've all yo yo'd - lost. then regained we are abusing our body with all the fluctuations up and down with our weight when someone is "concerned" or comments in a negative way - try to ignore their thought thank them for their concern - but tell them you have made up your mind- end of sentence - then try and change the subject i know "its" easier said than done - give it a try though thats what i did with a few people - "they" still weren't happy - they might have "discussed" bad things behing my back - oh well but............i decided i had to do this for myself - didn't want to listen to any negative!! hope you have your DOS soon good luck speedy recovery good luck with surgery 110% speedy recovery
  6. My surgery date is 6/28/17. I'd really like to find some other ladies within driving distance who'd be interested in meeting up face to face every month or more? I'm also interested in finding a workout buddy-even if it's though FaceTime! [emoji23] I just need to find some support. I'm personally not ready to tell my family & friends right now, since most of them have not ever struggled with weight. They just can't understand. I REALLY need someone who actually DOES understand. [emoji1374]
  7. I'm 7 weeks post op, 2 day post 1st fill. I am brisk walking 5 x's a week 3 x s daily but my doctor told me to start doing weight resistance training. So after deciding joining a gym was just too costly right now, I read an article in Prevention magazine about working with bands. They did a study of which form of exercise provided quickest results between yoga, pilates , working with dumbbells or using band. The bands won. So my 22 year old daughter (who's lost 22 lbs with 10 to go) decided to be my trainer. She was a All State Athlete in High school traveling on top notch fast pitch softball teams and playing basketball. It felt great working my upper body and was fairly easy. But the lower body definitely needs a lot of work. I've been suffering from butt and lower back pain for about 6 months so I could barely do 2 situps and leg lifts. But I know, it will be a slow process and I'll have to work my way up to being able to do more with lower body. I'll keep everyone posted on my results. Thanks for listening!!
  8. Potentially stupid ? alert...does taking three Viactiv chews at the same time have any impact on weight loss? I have been told to take three - one in AM, one midday and one in PM, but my work/life makes that hard, so I take all three at the same time along with my chewable multi. I am 7 weeks out overall having good results but pretty slow progress recently, and just wondering if anyone thinks it could be related?

    EATING.....

You know if you cheat, you are just cheating yourself, right? If you are not going to listen to your surgeon's advice, don't whine when your weight loss slows or stalls. Or when the food comes back up. I am always thirsty when I eat, especially when I finish. But when I was cheating with a few sips during meals, I found that I could eat more and was hungry quicker. Now I set my phone alarm for 30 min after eating and do something else. I find that the thirst passes, and by the time the alarm goes off I often forget to get something to drink. As long as you get your liquids at other times, you really can forgo the drinking 30 min before and after meals. Try it and see if you don't eat less and remain satisfied longer.

    EATING.....

Me, too! It's really a hard transition. I'm so weight watchers ingrained, I'm used to chugging water before, during and after a meal. It's rough.
  11. Yeah, I have taken adipex in the past (8 years ago) and I lost about 90 lbs in a 12 month period. I gained it all back and then some after about 2 years. I "tried" it again last year and I couldn't tolerate it anymore. Gave me terrible headaches and made me extremely jittery. Sooo, I say try it and it will get you on the right track, but I definitely wouldn't consider it a long term solution.

    Depression and anxiety

I was also worried about how the surgery would affect my social life which was also all about food and drink. Guess what...I am still a social person...still go out to eat and drink. I just no longer do it to excess. In fact, last week I went out to dinner six nights in a row due to family in from out of town and other committments. Even with a glass or two of wine, I still dropped a little bit of weight. I ate band sized portions and made healthy choices...fish, veggies mostly but small amounts of carbs as well. Stuck to broiled or baked..nothing fried. Wasn't hard to do and had a great time enjoying the food and company. I know you are scared of the unknown but try not to be. You may find like me, that things will be much much better than you can imagine. Good luck!
  13. Hello all, I have been reading the board and other information and know that I am ready, willing, and able to have the the band .. but there is a small issue. Currently, I qualify under my insurance with the exeception of the 6 month supervised diet. I met with the dietician last night and it seems I am VERY borderline for my BMI (I have 3-4 co-morbidities). We weighed in last night with shoes on, keys, wallet, phone in my pocket to get a few extra lb, and I come in at 37.1 (without this, I am 35.9). It seems unethical, but the dietician is making me maintain my weight for the next 6 months instead of losing anything. If my weight drops down to under 224 during this time, I lose out. Now, this is hard for me to grip, as I don't want to stay this way a day longer; however, I know the band could essentially save my life. Has anyone else been in this same boat, and if so, how did you proceed? Thanks Mark
  14. I too had to do my 6 months with a dietician. I gained 30 lbs in the 6 months in order to qualify and it took awhile but I did. After my final weigh in with her, I went on a diet and lost the 30 lbs due to eating like a bird and exercising like crazy. But now I have the band and wouldn't have done it any other way. I would have done anything the dietician asked just for me to be approved.

    Depression and anxiety

Hi Rose Thank you for your response. I am 48 years old, diabetic, on cholestrol tabs, have bad knees - all the usual stuff that goes with carrying excess weight. I am also under Prof Tess and her team...... I was loving being surrounded by doctors that understood us, and took care, but I missed an app with the Psych (Just completely forgot) and saw the wrath of "our" doc. Anyway, putting that aside, I had my family visit last night, and my family seem more Enlightened....but my partner who is long distance, is still trying to convince me to not do it. I am certainly feeling better physically....but mentally, I am unsure of how my life will carry on as it will change drastically. My social life is around eating, drinking and enjoying a night out, but I am battling to go out and drink Water....Oy!! I understand that I have to stop was wasn't working previously, and have researched this op for the past 5 years. Possibly just realisation that the op is 12 days away?? I am so happy that you are over the op and have been successful! Well done! Lots of love Dee - also Jo'burg
  16. Tiff-Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! Your response made me feel so much better about things. I never was a gorger, more of a grazer because I don't work. On a nice day, not a problem, I amout of the house! When it is pouring or 3 feet of snow, I tend to graze more. I also lose no problem, but then get too comfy and gain it back. I am looking forward to the smaller portions acutally. My daughter wanted to go to Applebees the other nite because she is on weight Watchers (she weighs about 130 haha) and they have a new WW menu so I thought I would be supportive. So we both order WW entrees and it came and I laughed for 5 minutes. The steak was maybe 3" diameter, 3 small new potatoes and a handful of brocolli. I was like "so this is correct portion size?" My stomach actually was satisfied after but it took my brain to get it. I look forward to the restriction but it is just so new and different from anything I have obviously ever experienced. I know I will very excited when I get a date. I weighed 143 in 6th grade, 185 when I got married 37 years ago and about 230 now so it is all I know. Again thank you for your constant support to everyone on this forum! Carol

    Port position

Mine is several inches to the left and above my navel. My surgeon never even mentioned the issue of port placement. I'm pretty sure he puts all of them near the navel. I can't feel my port, and don't have any problems with it. If I had the option to pick, I probably would have asked for a sternum port because they seem to be less likely to move or become uncomfortable as you lose weight. However, I also know of many people who are happy with their abdomen ports, so I don't feel there is a really dramatic difference between the two locations. I just trusted my surgeon's judgement and so far so good.
  18. sleeve newbie, I'm in the same place you are right now... the scale's going up cuz of my period. I dunno what will happen afterwards, cuz it's still going on and I'm only 3 weeks post-op so this is the first time. I am frustrated and sad. Not to mention just generally feeling ill cuz I think my period is causing all sorts of other health issues to flare up It's definitely Water weight tho... don't worry. I can tell because the body fat % on my scale dropped by several points, haha. Also because my husband squeezed my arm like a ripe fruit (you know, the fleshy bat wing) and said "Don't worry, it's water." (Apparently I'm squishier when it's water than actual fat. My husband ALWAYS knows just what to say.)
  19. I suspect that your family and friends don't understand the operation. I found an ABC news story about Khaliah Ali's book about her weight loss due to lap-band surgery. The article includes an excerpt from her book in which she does an excellent job of explaining the surgery and benefits. I suggest you send out this link and/or print off some copies of the article to hand to your friends and loved ones to help them understand what you're doing. It might help you to read it, too. It helped me. ABC News: Excerpt: Khaliah Ali's 'Fighting Weight' Some people are uninformed, some are envious, and some are just mean or negative. And frankly, there are some people that would rather we remain fat for a variety of reasons. They may not even realize why they feel the way they do. It doesn't mean they don't love you or care about you but they're not necessarily showing it in the way that's best for you. If they take the time to read this and other articles and still have concerns, you can politely ask then to respect the fact that you have researched this, you know the risks, you are under the care of a doctor, and you would appreciate it if they would respect your decision, even if they can't support it. This is one reason why I'm not telling many people -- not because I can't handle it if they don't support me but because I'm not in the mood to educate others right now. Maybe later. Good luck! You're doing the right thing to come here for support.
  20. please someone tell me this is just some crazy Water weight that will come back off...... during my pre op liquid diet-i lost a total of 8 lbs by surgery day which was friday... so i just weighed myself and i am back up to what my original weight was?!?!? what on earth? is this normal?
  21. I've heard of the 3 week stall. But I stopped losing weight at 1 week. I lost 10lb during my 1 week pre op diet and 10 lb the week after my surgery. My surgery was 11/30. I haven't lost anything since 12/7. I use a Bariatric app to track all my food/water/vitamins. My calories have gone up over the past 2 weeks (as expected) from around 300 to 600 and my carbs are higher than I would like (around 35 avg), but I'm finding soft foods are limited. I am not meeting my water goals of 64 oz. I'm getting about 30 oz. If I do too much moving around, my incision sites get really sore so I have not started walking but I do a lot house work and go into my office a couple days a week (not just a couch potatoe, like week 1). Anyone else experience this? Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. Remember, aside from "White Knuckle" dieting, your band is probably not helping you with hunger control. I did Ok for my first fill. It was 4 weeks after surgery. between my first and 2nd fill, 4 weeks after the first, I GAINED weight. Because at the 4 week mark I was allowed to start "regular" solid food.

    Difficulty With Protein

Try softer Proteins, like fish and tofu or chicken thighs cooked for a long time. Eat slowly, chew well. Take your time. I never counted calories, avoided carbs or made a note of the amount of Protein I ate. I kinda let the band do all the work as far as portion control. And I lost weight. So eat well and maybe don't worry if you're not getting the whole 70g in.

Did anyone lose weight with the 1st fill?

CONGRATS on your 1st fill. Restriction will come, as previously stated everyone is so different. I had my first and only fill January 09 (2.4cc) and lost 45 lbs. I just went today for my 2nd fill because I have not really been restricted over the past 2 months. I actually ate way more than what I usually eat over the past 2 months but I didn't gain any weight or lose any weight. So with this 2nd fill I anticipate losting the remaining 35 lbs. Good luck!!
  25. Hi. I have a 10cc band and will get my first fill on 6/30/09. Who lost weight with the first fill and how much did you lose before needing a 2nd fill? I lost 11 pounds the first 3 weeks post op. I was scheduled for a fill on 6/16/09, but had to reschedule because I was flying out on my vacation. I am now on vacation and can eat anything. I am not over doing it, but I no longer get full after a few bites. Last night I was able to eat most of my hamburger. Nothing is getting stuck at this point. I do not have a scale available, but I think I am gaining weight. I just hope that I can lose more after I get my first fill. Please tell me I can. I really need to be encouraged right now. I pray that this will be the last vacation where I am FAT. I look like I am 7 months pregnant.:blushing:
