    VSG with no Thyroid

Thank you for replying. This is comforting to hear. I think 40 lbs in 7 weeks is pretty good. I would be thrilled. I did hear we may lose the weight slower than others wig regular thyroid.

    1. How long after surgery did it take for you to notice that you were losing weight? Weight loss started pre-surgery and continued through surgery. Fat loss is constant with caloric deficit. Weight loss isn't so shouldn't be taken too seriously or monitored too carefully. 2. What was one of your favorite items to eat right after surgery (would love recipes)? I was on an Optifast only plan for ten days following surgery. I lasted a week and transitioned onto smooth blended soups. I enjoyed neither. 3. How long after surgery did it take you to feel amazing? 4 to 5 days. 4. When exercising, was it hard to get in to the habit of doing so? If it was hard, how did you keep yourself motivated? Easier than before - being lighter is a good feeling generally for walking and my walking speed has increased dramatically.

    1) A couple of weeks after surgery the scales began to move. There's a lot of water retention post-surgery, which throws a lot of people off. Best advice is to just ignore the scale while you're still healing from the procedure. The weight is definitely coming off, but there's some adjusting your body needs to do. It's been through a lot! 2) I had no appetite right after surgery and was on liquids, so I really can't recall anything that I honestly loved. I couldn't tolerate sweet things, so any liquid savoury soup (like a simple miso) was appreciated. Unsweetened matcha lattes made on protein fortified soy milk also kept me happy. 3) It took a good month for me to recover (I had a hernia repair with my bypass). Once the pain had finally gone and things settled in, I began to feel better pretty quickly. The first big improvement honestly came from having quit sugar from the pre-op diet onwards. By about week 3, my skin was clear and I really noticed how much better I was feeling. No more headaches. 4)The trick with exercise is to pick something you enjoy. There's no point joining a gym if you don't enjoy gym fitness. The best exercise is the one you'll actually do. I personally love the gym, it's my happy place so I don't need to motivate myself to go because I look forward to it. Find what gives you pleasure. It might be swimming, riding a bike, or just walking (great time to pop on headphones and listen to a podcast or audio book). There's honestly a fitness activity out there for everyone. Set aside the time for yourself and enjoy it.

. How long after surgery did it take for you to notice that you were losing weight? - I am 2 weeks post op and down 13 LBs already 2. What was one of your favorite items to eat right after surgery (would love recipes)? Honestly? Cherry jello and cream of chicken with garlic powder 3. How long after surgery did it take you to feel amazing? Still recovering but I’m 30 and really only had 2 bad bad days and those were days 3 & 4 where the pain was awful 4. When exercising, was it hard to get in to the habit of doing so? If it was hard, how did you keep yourself motivated? Haven’t done much exercising besides walking but motivation is the fact I’ll live longer and healthier.

7 day post op mental breakdown

I understand that hormones can change with weight loss surgeries. You have a lot on your plate but you need to stop -just stop with the battles. Let go and give them to God. One person alone with having major surgery amid making life time changes it is too much. Crying is good, but laughter is healing for the body and soul. first take care of you. Find a quiet place, and take time to just be still. Put in a funny movie - something lighthearted that makes you happy or music, a sermon. Call your Dr or support group or find a therapist so you can vent, but get help. we can’t fix the world, and sometimes the more we try, the worse it gets . Concentrate on you. The eviction thing, tell the attorney to handle it, it’s why you pay him. What’s in the past, try to let it stay there. Court things taking forever right now, there’s always a lot of back n forth. Calendar it 4 weeks from today. people can’t hurt you more than what you let them. You stay in control, of you . Learn to respond and not react to unwelcomed news. Wish you the best. just read your profile. Happy Birthday. For you and me both. 4/29/ 53 here. 🎊

    VSG with no Thyroid

I didn't have my thyroid removed but was diagnosed with hashimotos two years ago and rapidly put on weight. I am 7 weeks post op today and I have lost 40 pounds since surgery. I do think my weight loss seems slower compared to others but I just said to myself today that this is the best I have felt in two years and that makes this whole process completely worth it.

    VSG with no Thyroid

I had a total thyroidectomy in early 2K. Put on a TON of weight. After 3 years of research & going back & forth on deciding, I had my VSG in November 2021, just 5 months ago. I I was in the same boat as you - wondering if the surgery would actually make a difference. It was quite worrisome for me. But - it HAS made a difference! I've lost 55 lbs since the surgery, 96 lbs total adding in the pre-op diet & on my own (after my 1st consultation w/my surgeon I decided to get busy!). I'm probably a bit of a slow loser, compared to some others here. But I'm doing it. It is totally within reach for you, and you WILL lose weight!
  8. Hi all! Thank you for being so supportive and forthcoming to my previous post. I am getting closer and closer to having all my requirements done (and closer to a surgery date!) I do have a few questions that I am hoping any other RNY patient can answer. 1. How long after surgery did it take for you to notice that you were losing weight? 2. What was one of your favorite items to eat right after surgery (would love recipes)? 3. How long after surgery did it take you to feel amazing? 4. When exercising, was it hard to get in to the habit of doing so? If it was hard, how did you keep yourself motivated? I am sure I will have a ton more questions later on, but I am so happy to be here and so thankful for any answers I will receive.

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )

I eat carbs, never had any problem with pasta, rice, potatoes etc. That being said I don’t eat any starches generally until dinner time, because it makes me sleepy in the afternoon otherwise. It also helps me limit the amount I eat. I am still maintaining at my goal weight around 18 months later so my strategy is working thus far.
  10. I decided to only share my decision with my husband and two sons. My parents and relatives are very judgmental and I don’t want to hear their nasty opinions. We live in different states and they probably won’t see me anyhow. When the time comes to see friends or attend my husband’s company Christmas party, I have a plan. If they are nosey and ask how I lost weight, I will say that I saw a dietician and followed a strict liqud diet. It’s the partial truth. They don’t need to know all the details. It’s none of their business.
  11. I post this to see if anyone else has had a Psych Med for Depression, Anxiety, or Bi-polar that has to build up in the system to be impactful, like Depakote DR, Effexor ER ,etc. If so, I'd be interested in your story and how you are managing. Stuff Just Hit the Fan I had my RYGB last August, 2021, and I'm down a good deal of weight and was feeling great! Then the end of February rolled around and I started getting little headaches, not sleeping all night, and having the odd panic attack after a period of years of stability. Then all hell broke out. Headaches from dawn to dusk, insomnia every night, rage, restless legs, constant stress and panic. I thought we had prepared for this by switching my 2,000mg Depakote (Delayed Release) to 2,000mg Valproic Acid Oral Solution (Immediate Release) prior to surgery. Even one month after surgery my levels were fine (two months on the Immediate Release Liquid.) Somewhere in the past 7 months my doctor forgot to have my levels checked again, and since I was feeling good, I didn't remember either. I was able to get into my shrink mid-March and he added me to Geodon to try to stabilize me, 20mg x2/day. He isn't very knowledgeable about the Valproic Acid Oral Solution, and I had to ask him for a blood level test. Low and behold my levels came back at half what they were 7 months ago, and I'm quite certain this is why I'm having these problems. For the past two weeks I've been adding 1,000mg of crushed Depakote DR to applesauce daily and eating it. The only risk that I can find from my research is liver toxicity, but this is something that we can monitor for, and with how bad I was, and still am sometimes, feeling, I will roll those dice. How I understand the DR coating on the pills that I had to come off of for the surgery is to help the medicine make it past the stomach into the small intestine where it gets absorbed, but since we now have a much smaller stomach (and small intestines' too?) taking them whole won't work.
  12. One year ago today, my life changed when I walked into the hospital. The past 12 months have not been the easiest and I have had moments that I wish I could finish that 6oz steak, baked potato and the entire plate of roasted veggies they serve at my favorite restaurant. But when I can bike for a couple of hours now and still feel like I could go another two and when I go to the doctor and get on their scale and I weigh less than I did in high school and my blood work is all in the normal ranges, and I can go into the cute clothing boutiques and find things to wear, those annoying mealtime thoughts happen less and less. I hit and exceeded my goal weight, but then went back up a few pounds above goal...I think I'm in one of my lower weight set points. If it's anything like the past few months, I'll spend several weeks here, then drop again...as long as I stay the course. Still happy with all I accomplished and have absolutely no regrets! Except, I wish I had done it years ago!❤️
  13. People are going to assume you have had the surgery away when you start losing weight some might even ask you directly if you have so then do you lie to them ? I thought People would be very judge too and didn't tell anyone but then I had to because it was very obvious and I needed more time off work. I found most people were extremely supportive and you need that in the early days and why isolate yourself from your friends and social situations if your friends know maybe they can plan non eating get together until you are back in the "normal" eating phases. Bottom line is people are going to talk and assume anyway so it is much easier to be up front about it .
  14. Brief background, got lapband about 11 years ago (starting BMI was 43). I did well and kept off 55 pounds (BMI 33)... until I started aspirating at night. I had a barium swallow which showed a distended esophagus and a endoscopy which showed reflux. Doc said band needs to come out. I had band unfilled, and as I expected, I've gained weight. I've gained about 30 lbs in the last 5 months (current BMI 38). I want to revise to a gastric bypass. I am well aware that I need surgical help to keep at a healthy weight. Prior to banding, and since being unfilled, I'm constantly hungry and never feel full. I finally felt "normal" with the lapband. When I'm not constantly hungry, I can maintain a healthy weight. But, even with the extra 30 lbs, my BMI is still not over 40, which as I understand it, would make insurance coverage easy. (I have Maryland CareFirst BCBS) My doctor has me doing all the things needed for insurance approval for the revision, including being on a supervised diet. But I'm gaining weight. This does not surprise me -- there was a reason I needed surgical weight loss in the first place -- but I'm getting mixed messages from my doctor and from my diet supervisor (who works for his office). Diet supervisor tells me that I'm less likely to get insurance approval due to my weight gain since being unfilled and being on the supervised diet. Doctor has made vague statements saying that the reflux found on the endoscopy may be enough to make it go through insurance successfully. Diet supervisor wants me to lose a significant amount of weight in the coming month, to try to offset my gains, by going on the pre-surgical diet early. Very honestly, I'm hesitant. If I do end up having to get up to a 40 BMI to have the surgery (12 more pounds...), I don't want to yoyo any more than I have to. And if the reflux finding will get me approved, I don't want to starve myself without the benefit of surgical help. Anybody been in any kind of similar situation? I can use any advice or commiseration available.
  15. I believe it's a insurance requirement thing here. I could be wrong tho. Because I'm having WLS but I'm self pay (my insurance would not cover it). I didn't have to go months trying to prove I could lose weight. I also don't have to do the 2 week liquid diet. I only have to do 2 days of the liquid. So self pay and insurance requires totally different treatments.
  16. My initial appointment with my WLS surgeon is in 6 days...and I’m 100% committed to showing up and beginning this process of healing my mind, my body, my soul. 31 years of destroying it have caught up with me and now my body is screaming that it’s hurting...if I don’t turn this around it’ll give out. I had appointments for consults scheduled over a year and a half ago but kept backing out and in that time I gained close to 80 pounds, blood pressure/cholesterol/heart rate and sugars climbed, other things declined...my whole body hurts. It’s time for surrender and change. I’m going to that appointment on the 25th...NO EXCUSES.
  17. Hi, my name is Jen and I’m new here. I will be 40 years old next month. I have 4 kids (14, 6, 4, & 3). I’ve been thinking about Bariatric surgery for quite awhile. Currently a BMI of 44. I’ve tried so many diets over the past 20 years and even though I have been able to lose some weight it never stays off. Now as a result of being overweight, I am having a lot of knee issues, low back and hip issues. I know that losing weight would help tremendously. I want to exercise but because of my knees losing their articular cartilage, exercising has become so painful. My PCP, orthopedic doctor, gastro doctor and therapist all say that Bariatric surgery would be extremely beneficial for me. It will allow me to start exercising without all the added weight, help my GERD, help my Fibromyalgia and help my self esteem and anxiety. I agree with all of them. My insurance company (Quartz) does cover the surgery. They gave me 3 places I can go to. 2 of the places are very far from where I live. The 3rd one is at UW in Madison, WI (about 1.5 hours from where I live). The thing is that my youngest is in 1/2 day PreK and I have no family around. I’m wondering how I can make all the appointments needed work while dealing with kids and their school schedules? From what I’ve read UW requires 7 months of appointments. I kind of wanted to get the process started soon so that hopefully by next summer I could get the surgery while my kids are home from school. Has anyone ran into this problem? Also, has anyone on here gone to UW Madison for their surgery? I’ve been reading that Dr. Garren is amazing. Just curious if anyone has had experience with him or the surgery center there.

    “Non scale victories...”

Great comment above. Doctors sometimes reduce certain health conditions to weight when it is more complex than that - for example, my very fit, thin cousin has uncontrollable high blood pressure, while mine is well controlled with meds. Just looking at our weights, you would assume the opposite is true. Regarding NSVs, big ones for me have been cutting my HBP meds (again, I have well controlled HBP, so I have had to reduce meds), more energy, a better sex drive (a bit embarrassing to share on a forum but it is true so...), less anxiety about fitting in places, fitting into old clothes in my closet, feeling eager to move more (when in the past activity was harder and I wanted to avoid it.)
  19. Oh I am so sorry you are going through this. I did liquid for a month before surgery it isnt easy but it was so worth it. Remember you are going through withdrawals from sugars etc so its going to make you emotional and yes angry. Also you are loosing your coping mechanism. The diarrhea is probably good for you because your body is detoxing from years of crap - this can also cause headaches so drink lots if water it should help Just know that it is also a good time to start learning self discipline- i know for me my husband enjoyed taking me to dinner and ive inly been out with him 2 times since my surgery in December 1021. Wven though I make the healthiest choice on the menu and only eat a small portion- i usually have enough for 2-3 more meals - i always up gaining or not loosing for a week - probably due to salt. Im going to give some advice I wish I had on the liquid stage - get Nutrition 310 Protein Powder mix it with unsweeted plant milk - I like Silk Almond milk - it comes in so many flavors that it helps with the cravings and it is so so good. I love the peppermint swirl. But they have a vanilla birthday cake thats so yummy as well. I seriously can live in just this stuff now and when you crave that treat youve got a healthy alternative- its full of Vitamins and I feel so good post op since I found it. Like I said, I wish I had found it during my month long liquid hell phase and the 2-3 weeks liquid post op. AMAZING!!!

    Post Bariatric Weight gain

Hi Melanie, I gained approximately 30 pounds during COVID and only recently lost them back. I did Weight Watchers and other diets and focused on protein and portion sizes to get my act back together. I'm also working out 3-5 times a week. It's a constant struggle, but the good news is that the WLS still works as a tool when I'm making the right choices.
  21. Super excited - had my surgery 12/22/2021 I am hanging around 180 BUT I have been working out so i see the loss just gaining muscle AND I actually went running for the first time in 15 years yesterday!!! I was in track in Jr High and High School and kept up through the years until about 15 years ago I had my ACL replaced in 2011 and had cracked my femor so that started my no running gaining weight journey. It felt amazing. At first I felt my lungs after about 5 minutes and I thought hmm maybe I should stop but then I remembered that feeling from running track and racing it turned from this hurts to oh hell yes I loved that feeling because I knew I was running strong and hard in the day. I ran a mile - many leas than the old me could have - but I was proud of that one mile. And I dont feel bad today - my left hip is a bit sore but its full of arthritis so Im not surprised by that. I will rest today and run tomorrow Im building it back up slowly. I can say Ive lost enough I dont have the fat hitting so it was comfortable to run physically other than im super out of shape. I do have a lot of stomach skin - the Apron - it still carries weight as do my hips and thighs. Im where I want to be with the rest of my body - my husband said he can see my ribs and spine pretty dominant I just cant seem to move the hip, lower tummy and thigh fat. Thats where the last 40-50 pounds are that I need to loose. Im hoping squats and running with get it moving. Thanks for listening let me know if anyone here is starting to run! “Non scale victories...”

There is a whole thread on here for NSVs. But just a warning - don't count on all of your medical issues to disappear even if you lose a good amount of weight. Not all health problems that doctors say are caused by your weight are really caused by your weight. Some are genetic, like high blood pressure and cholesterol. Actually, cholesterol can increase right after surgery as your body releases certain hormones. Congratulations on having surgery, but remember that "health" is more than just your blood pressure or other medical conditions. Health has a lot to do with how you feel. I have lost 112 lbs and I feel great being able to fit more comfortably in places and wear "regular" clothes. I also move more comfortably and walk faster. But I was promised so many things - like having more energy - that I have not experienced. Good luck!
  23. a 10-20 lb weight rebound is very common after you hit bottom. In fact, I "attend" Unjury's virtual support group for people 1+ years out on Wednesday nights, and the speaker they had last week (a dietitian in Boston) said a 5%-15% gain from your lowest weight is pretty much expected, and they don't consider it a regain until it goes over 15%. Until then, it's just your body settling in at a weight it's comfortable at. That said, things do start to get trickier, because you don't want your weight to start spiraling out of control again. A lot of people set a "red line" for themselves - a weight that, once you go past it, it's all hands on deck until you get back under that red line again. so anyway - yes - it's a lifelong battle.
  24. Hello. During my preop insurance approval phase I ate whatever I wanted but I did count calories. I stayed under the allowed calories given to me by the nutritionist. I lost 25 lbs. Then I stuck with the preop diet and did it for an extra 4 days. 4 weeks postop now, sticking to the plan 99.99999%. My only "cheat" was that I ate 1 reese piece! That 1 reese piece cured all my urges to have a treat that I know I shouldn't have. Eat what you want, but don't go over board because sometimes gaining weight will have your surgery cancelled. My team, at the final weight check you could not have gained any weight. Didn't have to loose but gaining delayed your surgery date.
  25. I'm fighting this same issue as well just under 2 years out from surgery. I hit an alltime adult low of ~213 pounds about 8 months ago. I've kept it close to that, but over the past 6 months I've slowly gained about 9 pounds. Don't get me wrong, 222 is still a far cry from my June 2019 weight of 389, but the warning signs are there. I'm hoping that Spring warmer temperatures finally actually get here so I can get outside for exercise more regularly (or that I'm more inclined to do so), but I need to focus on my eating habits more and nip this thing in the bud. I think we sometimes forget that lifelong battles are indeed that.
