    Shapewear/Binders

I wore a binder for about a week after surgery- it really helped keep me from moving in ways that would cause the incisions to hurt. I don't know if shapewear will help your body go back to where you want it. I bought some because some of my skin has gotten saggy as I've lost weight. I pretty much only wear it if I'm putting on something form-fitting. Krista

  6. Surgery is Tuesday and I cannot wait!! I had my final appointment with my surgeon today - it was the first time I've met him, and all I can say is "wow." He is the sleeve expert of the practice and so enthusiastic (and ridiculously handsome - as in makes McDreamy look like pond scum) and is sooo perfect for what I wanted in how he operates. He uses a size 40 bougie which I am thrilled about. I don't feel like I need the extra restriction with the smaller one, and I was worried about strictures and what not. The other surgeons I met with earlier were all old farts. I could tell they were not big advocates of the sleeve and could barely walk. I was always nervous about that. I mean, if you're so aged that walking is difficult and your hands shake, how should I trust your hands to not nick my liver, know what I mean? He explained that he leaves the lower part of the stomach a little wider to avoid a stricture where the muscle is the toughest to stretch and closes the top more narrow where the stretchier part of the stomach is. If I could have written my own surgery, this is how I would want it. I'm soooo sooo happy. And the BEST thing is that he told me I could eat!! Omgomgomgomg. The liquid diet has me sooo hungry. I was drooling over a piece of asparagus last night. He said because I've been dieting for months that it wasn't as big an issue and that if I was that hungry to go ahead and have a little something to eat, but that I should keep it to fruits and veggies. FINE by me, Doc!!!! I had a shake for Breakfast and dinner, but I did have a side salad for lunch. I cannot tell you how much better I feel just from being able to eat that little bit. Jury duty tomorrow, but they'll excuse me for the surgery. I just have to show up. I just found that out today and have been worried for weeks about it. Hope everyone is doing well.

    LOTS of post-op pain

Most people report little pain and quick recovery. Mine diminished gradually over 2 - 3 weeks. We each heal differently. Please let your Dr know you're hurting. Peace
  8. Hi ! I am having the Lap Band procedure performed on Friday, January 13th. (Trying to not be superstitious) I have had trouble losing weight over the last 8 years. I will get started for several days to a week, then give in and go pig out at Chilis or similar place. I work as a midwife and deliver babies for a busy practice at our hospital. My 5 day work week is much more than that. I have to keep going sometimes on no sleep. I struggle with feeling like cooking, exercising, or pretty much anything else once I get home. So, I have put on about 40 pounds I would say over the last 5-6 years, and I was already overweight to start. I am sick of my body, being tired, stressed, unable to breathe just walking across the parking lot, or unable to get up one flight of stairs at work, having joint and back pain...you name it. I feel I need some help and I hope this is going to give me the extra boost I need to get healthy. I know the things I should be eating and doing, I just cant seem to stay on track. My BMI was 34.? at my consultation. I would like to lose from 200 down to 135. I would also like to have the energy to get all my body back in shape and toned throughout this adventure. Thankful for the forum and the support. Good luck to everyone here! Kim
  9. I'm not sure why you need to take liquid form and can't go for chewables, but anyway..... When you're given the list of things you need, ask for a list of places to get them. You're not the first one who has been given this list and for sure they'll have the info you need. Don't ever hesitate to ask your medical team a question. You won't be the first one to ask it. And the only stupid question is the one that goes unasked. :smile2: I take Flintstone chewable Vitamins. Just looking at the packaging now, it has 60mg of Vit C, 200mg of Calcium, no mention of Zinc but I know there is another variety in the Flinstone brand that has Zinc added. I just don't like them. :crying: Check out the ingredients of a few brands and see if you can find one that covers all of your requirements. That way you only need to buy one bottles rather than one for each thing on your list. I've tried the gummi bear kind, but they sort of stick to my teeth and I don't like that. As for Protein drinks, that's a very personal choice. Personally I don't like Isopure drinks. They coat my tongue and mouth in an unpleasant way. But many other people really enjoy them and find their favorite flavors quickly. It's trial and error until you find one that you like; or at least one that you don't hate. There are often sample packs of powdered Protein Drinks that you can purchase to get a taste it before buying a big container. I've been fortunate enough to find a Vitamin/Health food store that will allow me to return something new within a week if I don't like it to exchange for something else. The things you need for pre and post op seem daunting and expensive. But if you take into consideration the money you spend on junk food that you shouldn't be eating, it more than evens things out. At least that's been my experience.
  10. Glad you wrote about this. I had my band on August 14.I had my first fill today and it was a difficult procedure. they tried multiple times to with a two inch then three inch needle. I did have pain killer, lidacane which helped alot. We tried on my right side, on my back. Finally sitting up with my arm over my head worked best. My doctor says as I lose weight it will get easier. Yeah ! She also warned me I would be very bruised. I had 3cc put in today and will have another fill in 2 weeks. Liquids today, muschies tommorow and food on Wednesday. If they could not have gotten it I would have had to go to the hospital to have it done there. My nurse drew a map and put it into my files about where my port it located. Today I regretted every M&M and every chip I ever ate ! I am sure it will go better for you when you go in again. Carol

    September Surgery

I have viewed this site several times, however, just now registered and looking forward to participating in conversations. My weight prior to pre-op liver reduction diet was 220. Weighed in at 207 on surgery date of 9/7/12. The first few weeks were tough, had difficulty drinking and eating. Dehydrated, got fluids, and things slowly improved. Dr. put me on soft foods at 2 weeks due to not being able to tolerate Protein shakes at that time. I am now just over 4 months post-op and my current weight is 155... Just 5 pounds from the goal set by my Dr. My major concern now is will I be able to stabilize the weight loss. I have an appointment with my nutritionist next week and hoping for some guidance. I realize that I am beginning to look gaunt and frail, particularly in my face and upper body... at 55 yrs old the wrinkles and skin sagging are really appearing. People are constantly asking if I am sick! I debated on having the sleeve procedure rather than the by-pass since I was not extremely obese. However, due to chronic liver disease my Dr. and I decided the by-pass would be best for my liver problem. Would love to hear from any of you with helpful info or advice. I still struggle with getting in my protein and I really have to make myself eat. Never thought I would have this problem!!! I am sure hunger will return...just wondering when???
  12. Surgery just got delayed by 6+ weeks and It's no ones fault but my own. I was so excited, I just completed my last options calss through kaiser and was suppose to meet with the surgeon on Tuesday and schedule a surgery date. Well part of our options program with Kaiser required us to do blood work at weeks 3 and week 10. Part of the blood was was an h pylori test. Well stupid me did the blood work but forget to do the h pylori test (it's a stool test). Well when I went for my week 10 labs they reminded me. All my labs cleared but my h pylori test came back positive so now I have to do antibiotics for 10 days then wait 6 WEEKS before I can retake the h pylori screen. I am totally kicking myself because had I done the stupid test in week 3 like I was suppose to I could be done with the antibiotics and be getting scheduled for surgery next month like the rest of my class... This SUCKS!

    hello everyone!

Hi Morgan, You have come to the right place for help and support. First of all, I'm sorry for Doctor laughed at you and told you that you were too young and just need to lose weight. That infuriates me to no end. Nobody has the right to say that to anyone else. It sounds like you have had a weight problem you whole life, like most of us here. People who have never been overweight tend to find it hard to understand why we are obese. They make assumptions that we're lazy and all we do is eat. That's so far from the truth. If you went into your Doctor's office for any other medical reason do you think he would have laughed in your face. Absolutely not! When I started this journey, the first thing I did was research. I then found a local information/support group for lapbanding. When I called to register I was asked questions about my weight, height, and BMI. The woman sent me some info. in the mail. The information session was great because it walked me through the steps of everything I would have to go through such as consults and so on. Things have moved very quickly for me already. I went to my first meeting on Augsut 24th. Since then I have had my psych. consult, nutrition eval. and my consult with the surgeon is scheduled in two weeks. Find a surgeon in your area, ask if they have a bariatric coordinator. He/She will be able to assist you in what you need to do next. Search this site, you might be able to find someone from your area who can give you more info. I have met someone who lives about 5 minutes from me who has been so helpful. We have actually met and walk together at least once a week. Sorry for rambling, I wish the best! Jenn

    My largest Incision- hurts!

My surgeon told me this pain was normal because of all the muscle they have to cut. Although the pain subsided after a few weeks for me, that spot was still slightly tender even at my six month follow up, for instance when sitting up after lying down. But check with your surgical team if you think it is unusual or gets worse, rather than better!
  15. Sorry to hear about your experience. I didn't stick with them after all. They know with the first call to the insurance company whether there are exclusions for WLS in your plan. unfortunately a lot of these WLS centers are just into it for the money. Had I stuck with them I may have had a lap band by now BUT it would not have lasted. Four years ago I had surgery to repair a hiatal hernia; I had heard that it could cause problems,so to dig out the truth I went to a gastro doctor that had no affiliation with lap band to make sure I was a candidate. It can be done, BUT I was at much more risk for failure, and more importantly complications. Lap Band Solutions had said " sure your a candidate, the previous surgery is no problem" I believe Lap Band Solutions would have let me continue to have appointments or may have even done the surgery knowing I would later have complications that could lead to additional surgery or to have a revision. In any case they did not have the chance. I decided to get away from the cattle call clinics and search out a private Dr. that does WLS. I am very happy with my choice and will soon be reaping the success of a gastric sleeve. Out of all the WLS out there, I choose the sleeve, and all three of my doctors (primary, gastric, & WL surgeon) agree it is the best surgery for me. As for Lap Band Solutions.... I believe their practices to be deceptive, and maybe even risky. I have directed a letter to the AMA an the TX medical board telling them of my experience. I hope others like yourself will do the same.

    Never Hungry

So, tomorrow is 3 weeks post-op and I am just not ever hungry. I can eat, but I pretty much have to force myself to eat. I tried to wait it out yesterday to see when i would be hungry and I started to feel light headed before I was actually hungry - so I ate. I guess this is a blessing, but I have not heard anyone else talk about this. Anyone else experiencing this? -BSG

    Surgery October 9

Malvord...believe me when I say all those thoughts were in most of our minds. But remember why you took this path in the first place. Two weeks is one thing but, the rest of your life is another. i for one did well on new diets for about 3 weeks. Then I'd hit a plateau and go another week. If that scale didn't move I'd immediately quick and eat my way back to where I started and then some sometimes. I went the lapband route the first time around because I was afraid to cut into organs. It was a great tool but, in the end I had trouble with it and it had to come out...so after yet again gaining weight back I knew this is what I needed to do for myself, my health and my life. Believe me I had doubts a few weeks before, then again 3 days before...scared, worried but, at the same time excited. It's natural! Only you can decide if it's right for you though. Write the pros and cons of the surgery, do more research and search deep within you about whether this is for you. Good luck and thinking of you.
  19. I am 5 days away from surgery and have waited so long for this...but now i am second guessing myself. If i can do this two week pre op why cant i do this any time? Do i really want to give up all my favorite foods? Some of which i may never be able to eat again?
  20. I was banded back on 10/13/08 and my recovery was very smooth. I'm down a total of 45 pounds from my highest, but only about 33 since surgery. Everyone says that once you reach restriction, it is a whole different world and many find themselves losing weight more easily. Ummm....well why isn't this happening for ME!! I faithfully went every 4 weeks for small fills until I felt good restriction. I've had one small .3 cc unfill because I was a little too tight. So why o why am I still at the same friggen fraggin weight? I don't eat that much and have fairly good daily activity. I wasn't too pleased that it took me about 7 months to finally get restriction, but I kept thinking that things will change once I'm at my sweet spot. These are those frustrating times I honestly wish I had chosen the sleeve over the band. Thanks for listening to my rant :grouphug:

    The Lymphatic System

Inner Surfer Girl - I just bought the dry brush and face brush on Amazon. Love my Prime membership. I've read about the benefits of dry brushing before and I'm going to do it. I have dramatically cut down on sugar and I'm starting Yoga next week. Yoga is 1 night a week in addition to my 2 Zumba days. I haven't ever thought about a "rebounder" before but I might look into it. Excellent article - thanks for sharing.

    Green Coffee....

I don't believe any advertisements for stuff that says it burns fat. But I also watched this Dr Oz show a couple of weeka go and went ahead and bought some from Amazon. If I remember to take it I'm doing ok. Don't know if it's working or not. Haven't gained anything in the past week since my band has been emptied due to a slip. I was so afraid I'd gain a couple of lbs this next 2 weeks till it's filled again. Like I sai I don't usually believe anything that states that it burns fat, but I trust Dr Oz. So I thought I'd give it a shot. My husband is taking them too. I'll keep you updated on his progress. Marci

    Looking Forward To..,,,

I am looking forward to going to the Mall of America waterpark with my three beautiful children and actually putting on a swimsuit and not being embarrassed about it. There are just ro many to list!
  24. So I have made it to the half-way mark. YEA!!!!!!!!:cursing: I really never thought this would be this easy. But, it is turning out to be very easy. I have never been this confident in myself. I have never tried to put myself together on a regular basis either. Now, I'm in the mirror all of the time, consistently making sure I look OK. But this weight loss has helped me so much. I feel better, I'm not tired all the time, I haven't even gotten as sick as I normally do at this time of year. I am almost 5 months post-op and down 60 lbs (post-op weight lost) and so proud of myself. I went to see my mom the other day, and it had been over a week since I had seen her last, and she lost it. She couldn't believe that I have done so well. She is finally starting to see the changes in me. Even at work, people that I don't even know their names, are stopping me and asking if I have lost weight. It just feels so good to be noticed. My whole life I have felt like I lived in the shadows. No one ever noticed me, that can take a lot out of a person. But, not anymore. Those feelings a starting to dissipate.... YEA to me again!!!!! My husband has always told me I was beautiful, but I have never felt it before. Well, that is all changing. I know now that my outside will reflect my inside.
