    Newbie Here

I always wonder about the people writing about "brimming with energy" 3 weeks after WLS. Well, not this gal here... How much food the pouch can comfortably hold is depending on the patient (e. g. did they a pouch/sleeve-resizing or not, how much swelling is still around) and what you put into the pouch. I can eat way more than 0.5 cup. I'm 4 weeks out of revision from MGB to RNY. I'm always surprised how little other patients seem to be able to eat or drink. Totally normal. You're putting food weight into your system again. Revision weight loss is said to be much slower. You're also at a relatively low BMI of 32 - I wouldn't expect quicker weight loss.

    Self sabotage?

I had been doing that all of my adult life. I went on a binge before I had my revision surgery thinking I would be so depressed if I couldn't eat all of my favorite foods. Then I had the sleeve. With the sleeve, I just don't feel controlled by food anymore. I get sick if I were to overeat, so I don't. I don't even want junk food anymore really at all. The sleeve is an amazing tool. Good luck and hang in there! Your sleeve date will be here before you know it.

    6 months today

You are a great inspiration for those of us who are waiting (me personally for a revision), 70lb in 6 months seems fantastic - and just think of how toned and beautiful your body will be with the running. Congratulations! Glenda

High Blood Pressure & Diabetes after WLS

Thanks for the replies. I do have about 20 - 30 more lbs I would like to lose. I was at my goal but got to goal in a bad way. I lost my last 30 lbs by vomiting constantly. I needed a surgery on my esophagus to remove excess scar tissue from the band that was on my esophagus. My first surgeon placed my band ON my esophagus and after almost 9 years, I'm still paying for that! It was discovered when my band was removed and my revision was done. Any who, I couldn't keep anything down. Since my surgery to fix my esophagus, I've been able to eat and I've gained about 20 lbs. The surgeon that did my esophagus surgery told me that I was very malnourished and that I would probably gain weight after the surgery and would hopefully lose it later. Well, I'm still fighting with that! I'm sure you're right in that I am better off than if I had all that extra weight and I need to look at the bright side. I am already on 2 medications for the high blood pressure, but not yet on anything for the diabetes. My doc is having me watch my blood sugars. I'm sure the next time I see her she will put me on something because my sugars have been running higher. I'm just bummed out about it! I'm on meds for thyroid, high blood pressure and now diabetes? I will rattle when I walk!!
  5. How is everything going now? I am 3 1/2 months out from my sleeve and for the first time in my life, I started having HORRIBLE gerd symptoms 2 days ago. I'm uncomfortable during the day, but at night is when I'm in agony. I'm on 40mg of Omeprazole for 6 months because of the surgery, so I'm shocked this is happening. I made a post titled "Is this GERD?" because I literally have never felt anything like this before and it's freaking me out. I'm scared that if GERD is starting 3 1/2 months out from surgery, I'm going to have to be miserable for years before I can be approved for a revision. And I thought bypass was kind of the gold standard for eliminating GERD, and now I'm nervous having read a few threads on here about people getting the bypass and developing GERD after, or getting it because of GERD and it not going away.
  6. I'm in the process of revising from Band to Bypass due to GERD. Good Lord, I hope I don't get GERD again after the Bypass. That's supposed to cure it. My sister in law has LPR, but she's not a wls patient. Her father had it and it led to his esophageal cancer. So this sort of thing terrifies me.
  7. in most cases, gastric bypass improves if not outright cures GERD. Mine went completely away for 2-3 years. I do have issues occasionally now, but it's really minor reflux rather than GERD. Nothing a couple of Tums can't deal with (as well as not eating things that might set it off). And it's just occasionally - not every day like it was before surgery (and certainly much milder). P.S. I had gastric bypass almost seven years ago. Not a revision. I chose bypass over sleeve because I had GERD.
  8. Bands are miserable to live with. You'll be happier with the sleeve. It takes several fills to where you even can tell you have a band and until then, it's willpower alone. Besides that, you have to keep going back for fills, and if it's not right, get an unfill. don't even get me started on the complications bands cause. There would not be so many people getting revision surgery from bands to sleeve if we were all happy with our bands.

    Dry heaves

I had a lap band to sleeve revision and dry heaved for the first 3 days afterwards (stayed in the hospital to keep hydrated) the area of my stomach where my lap band was removed was swollen shut, it was a nightmare. I suspect you have some swelling as well, definitely get with your doc, it will get better SOON!
  10. band to revision in 3 wks, scared about complications after reading posts, dont have any dieting, surgeon said to maintain 35 BMI. my family and friends are trying to talk me out of it telling me i only have 50 to 60 pounds and should me able to do it on my own, feel shame that i can't, excited but scared too, afraid i wont be able to drink 96 oz daily.
  11. So, I feel pretty unique here - correct me if anyone else has the same issues... I've had my band now for about seven years, I think. I am at a decent weight (though I am 20 pounds heavier after having my son, than at my thinnest), but I have some band problems: 1. I am able to eat a lot of food, though I'm pretty restricted. Had a flouro last year, suspecting maybe pouch dilation, but everything looked good. No dilation. Why can I eat more than I used to be able to eat when I was really actively losing??? 2. If I am stuck I am able to "push" food down by applying pressure to my band area with my hand. Yes, it's very odd. I try not to do it, but sometimes when I'm stuck or I WANT to eat more food, I'll push it down. 3. I don't really get that full feeling any more. Any other long-time bandsters have these same issues? Do you think a revision might help? The docs seem quite clueless - maybe because the band hasn't been around all that long. I would love to lose those 20 pounds I've been hanging on to for awhile, but it feels so much harder this time around!

    Ghrelin (hunger hormone)

How long does it take for the hunger to go away? I had my surgery (revision from lapband) on September 28th 2010 and at almost 6 weeks out I still feel hungry all the time and I'm eating too much. I lost about 15 lbs in the 2 weeks after surgery and since then NOTHING! I'm so upset and worried that this surgery has been for nothing and I'm not going to lose any weight. I eat alot less than I did before surgery though more than most of you seem to be eating, however, I eat often. My bougie size is a 34 but I don't feel I have the restriction I should. After I eat I'm good for a few hours but then I get hungry again and eat. I take Nexium every morning so it's not stomach acid. I track my meals on TheDailyPlate and I can get in up to 1500 calories if I'm not very strict with myself or as low as 900 calories if I really watch what I'm eating. I do notice that I'm not getting in all the Protein I'm supposed to. When will the constant hunger and cravings stop? I'm very, very worried.

    GERD a problem for anyone?

Thanks..slaw a gastro doc.....he has scheduled upper GI barium and endoscopy....will see what happens.I just found out I have a small hiatal hernia..l am compiling it all for a revision...sleeve or bypass .
  14. My experience was opposite. I was sleeved early 2018. Never lost my appetite with the sleeve. Hunger was a constant battle. Revised to bypass 4 weeks ago and have to force myself to eat. Never hungry and nothing tastes the same as it did pre op. I am following dr plan to the letter. If you were to go off plan and eat carbs you may find that they either make you sick or even more hungry. Possibly both. Try to increase fluid intake and stick to plan. Call your dr if you still find hunger to be troublesome. Maybe they will have some ideas for you. I can barely get a few teaspoons of dense protein in and I am stuffed. Good luck and hang in there!

    long term effects?

Unknown effects are still unknown... but as to the others.... Some bandsters (a very small portion) will have to have their Bands removed or unfilled due to: *slippage *GERD/Reflux *Inability to tolerate a fill or desire to expand food choices If your Band erodes (very very small percentage), you would have to have your Band removed. The other possible consequence is that you will not lose enough weight and you will seek out a different surgery. (This could mean that you still lose the 50% of excess weight that would deem the Band a success, but did not lose the 90-100% that you wanted.) The good thing is that the Band has not altered you permanently in any way, so revisions are very easy. I'm six years + out, I have not heard of Bandsters with osteoporosis, anemia, or other vitamin-related issues like you hear about with other WLS. I also do not know of any who have had hernia repairs...which seem to be quite common with RNYers and DSers. Another way to think of things is that the long-term consequences of being morbidly obese are pretty clear... increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.... which means, you have an increased risk for an early death.

    Drain Vs No Drain?

It depends on the doctor & many times even on the patient. I didn't have a drain & know others with my surgeon who didn't either, but then I just met someone who did have a drain & has the same surgeon. Hers was a band-sleeve revision & she did mention her surgery took longer because of scar tissue from the band before, but I really don't know if that had anything to do with the drain or not. I feel my recovery was fine without a drain.
  17. My hubby had his failed revision from his Lap -Band to a RNY and the plan was to remove his gallbladder at the same time They did take out his band and his gallbladder at the same time!! 3 years later he finally had his Sleeve done. So I wonder why someone who was already having surgery and they know there is a problem with his gallbladder why they wouldn't do it at the same time.

    Carnie Wilson

So Carnie Wilson, had Gastric bypass in 1999, and then the lap band in 2004. She has only lost 40 pounds since her revision. I suspect she will be getting the sleeve soon. Speaking of famous people (or semi famous people). I'm thinking Boy George and Chaz Bono had WLS. Any thoughts?
  19. I am going for a revision from the band to the sleeve on the 10th. I have had the band for 5 years. As you must see from your friends with issues, there can be some and then you may need it removed and be back to where you started: getting the sleeve. I say sleeve all the way.
  20. I had a lapband and like you only lost about 30 pounds. I was revised to the sleeve last year in May, and I'm already under my original goal.

    Gastric bypass

I need to lose 100 more and will be having my revision this summer from sleeve to bypass. Had my sleeve 12/2013. I'm also worried about slower weight loss. Who knew starting at 250 lbs and BMI 41 would be considered starting at a lower weight?!

    Pain in port area?

Hi I have been having the same port pain that you describe. I have pinching and pain when I move or twist in a certain way. I was just wondering if your pain and pinching ever went away or did you require revision surgery? I have been having this for over 2 weeks now ever since I picked up a 35 pound dog. Well I hope to hear back from you soon. Thanks in advance.
  23. That's true. I may yet find someone. I guess I'm just frustrated and a bit worried. I mean if something does go wrong I'm up a creek. I guess it hit home with me this month because I'm under a ton of stress because my mom has been very ill and hospitalized 3 times in 1.5 months. I ended up with a stress headache from hell and increased blood pressure. When my doctor wanted to put me on a high dosage NSAID and muscle relaxant we had to have a lengthy discussion about the NSAID risks vs benefits. Which made me wonder what I'd do if the NSAIDs caused a problem with my band. Thanks so much for your thoughts ... I think, though, if I cannot find a reliable doc within a reasonable distance within the next year I might consider removal. Either that or a revision. Edited to add: Kat - I took the positive note from your message and did another search for Lap-Band surgeons and noticed something new on the search feature at the lapband.com site. It's an option for "Accepts Out of Town Patients" . That's new ... well I searched and two docs (in the same practice) came up with that qualifier. So I'm going to call their office tomorrow. Wish me luck.

    Scare Tissue Restricting Band

Removing the band is pretty easy, the scar tissue is a whole different ball game. I had a revision done at the same time. But my esophageal damage was caused by the band, not the surgery to remove the band. That is one big reason I had revision surgery. Lap bands are not easy on your esophagus. I do believe esopohageal damage is common with banded folks.

    Scare Tissue Restricting Band

I had the original Lap-Band surgery just 01 month after it was approved by the FDA in 2001. My start weight was 240 and I was down to 162 at my lowest. I have been the unfortunate recipient of some unusual abdominal tumors that gave me an enormous weight gain. I was back up to 200 last year and I seem to hover around 190-195 currently. I was at a steady 190 for several years as I seem to have lost the first 50 in the first year. Now, in the middle of my tumor removal surgeries (yes, there were 2), I somehow managed to have the tube between my port and my band come "un-done" and it started "floating" around and poking my insides causing excruciating pain. I had the tube repaired in a quick outpatient procedure. I also managed to have a 4th surgery because my last tumor removal resulted in a hernia. Now that I am apparently healthy, which is been nearly 7 months now, I cannot seem to lose the weight. I never know when the band will work. Sometimes I can eat whatever I want and sometimes I can't. I was able to have my repair covered by insurance, but it doesn't normally cover WLS. My doc told me that I have severe scar tissue around my band because it is old and it doesn't want to stretch with the fills so it doesn't work properly. I desperately want to lose the weight, down to at least 150, but I am in a vicious cycle. I am too exhausted all of the time to go work out, which I need to do to lose the weight, but the extra weight makes me exhausted! Arghhh! Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone ever heard of Cigna covering revision surgery? I am thinking that although they don't normally cover WLS, since I am having health issues, they may actually cover it as a means of repair. Does this make any sense or am I just wishful thinking? The band and the port are starting to cause pain when I lay down in certain positions, too. Any thoughts? Thanks to any and all for any suggestions.
