    Sleeve vs Bypass

Just like with everything else everyone has their own reasons for which surgery we decide to do. For myself, I figured that I would get just one chance to have my WLS. I went with the RNY. I figured that I would go BIG or go home!! Another thing that I don't understand is when peeps say "I went with the SLEEVE because it is less invasive" what is taking out 90% of your stomach "NOT INVASIVE". Also, I would never go into my WLS with the idea if it doesn't work I can get revised to another surgery. TRUST ME!! My poor hubby has been thru the ropes!! You DON'T want to think it can be done. He has suffered terribly with few results! Now about my WLS, I did have problems with strictures ( kind of like scar tissue) I ended up having 5 ENDOSCOPES with 4 DILATIONS. I started having problems within my first 4 weeks. It felt like my food set on top of my pouch and then slowly go down. When I went for my check up the PA said we should take a look but of course I told him that it was just me learning about my body. (I had my RNY on July 2, 2013) In NOV of 2013 was my 1st Endoscope w/dilation. Again in DEC 2013, again Jan of 2014, July of 2014 with my last being in Jan of 2015. All has been great since. My Dr told me that no one knows who will have strictures. Now for my STATS: HW 249 (I did weigh 285#'s but managed to lose 36#'s) SW 232 LW 117 CW 125#'s. I got to 117 in 6 months but gained 8#'s but I have maintained my 124#'s for 2 and 1/2 years. Having my WLS is one of the very best things I did for myself. Only you can decide which surgery will work for you. Good Luck in whatever you decide to do. I look forward to following your journey!!

    Wls out of town

I had my RNY at a CENTER OF EXCELLENCE also. I traveled 2 hours from home. I had to stay 1 week in a Hotel and went home after my 1 week check up. Not all CENTER'S OF EXCELLENCE live up to their names. My Surgeon did mine and my hubby's WLS. He was a good surgeon but really lacked at bedside manners. He called me a PROBLEM CHILD because I had Strictures and he had to do follow up care on me. 2 months after my RNY he did a failed revision from a lap band to a RNY on my husband. Who developed abscesses also was labeled as a Problem child!! Come to find out our MEDICARE and other insurance paid a certain amount for our surgery and aftercare. So he made his money doing the surgery not so much for the aftercare. So we ended up firing him and going to another BARIATRIC CENTER also an EXCELLENCE CENTER which is 4 hours away. So happy with our decision. But our blood test are faxed to our Bariatric Center. I am far enough out that I don't need to see them only if I have a problem. Better care, which helps with our confidence in them. Well worth the move!!
  3. Hi Hopeful16! Totally agree with all above! Take a deep breath and exhale! I'm 1 week, 1 day post op...round two...band to sleeve revision. I think everyone has those same fear/thoughts. As a healthcare professional myself, I did that constant battle with myself literally all the way up until I was looking up at the anesthesiologist, with tears falling down the sides of my face knowing what was about to happen. This time around, I told nobody except my husband (obviously), my mother, my adult children, my very best friend since childhood (who had the bypass 10 yrs ago) and 1 co-worker who is a close friend. I just didn't want the negativity or questions. Since my Lapband in 2013, if I had a nickel for every time I've heard "surgery is the easy way out", I would be a millionaire! People that don't understand the struggles of weight loss will never understand a surgical option! This is FAR from the "easy way out"! I used to tell people how offensive it was to hear that...then I realized, only people that walk in similar shoes completely understand! You have made an amazing decision! Stay strong, be proud of yourself and know this...this journey is 10% psychical and 90% mental. From recovery to approximately 72hrs out, I was wondering why I put my self thru this again...my husband (not my adult children's father) and my mother kept telling me "you've given birth, you've got this, this is much easier"...I'm not going to lie...I think once or twice my drug induced response was "I'd rather give birth again"...but then I remembered that giving birth comes with an entirely different set of fears and emotions, and then they start walking and talking and grow up (don't let that scare you lol)! Know that you will not only have the support of your immediate family, but also the support of your bariatric surgery family! Go into tomorrow and your new journey ahead with peace of mind knowing that you are doing what's best for you! Best Wishes! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  5. I had gastric sleeve in 2011.Everything was going great. In the fall of 2015 started having issues with acid and bile reflux.I didn't feel anything but then starting coughing a lot. I started more Prilosec and checked in with my weight loss Dr.Had to have an endoscope and upper GI.The reflux was starting to damage the esophagus. I also had my hiatal hernia repaired but it failed too.I am having revision surgery on Nov. 22nd to Gastric Bypass to eliminate the acid and bile reflux. They said if they repaired the hiatal hernia again it would fail. This area moves while you are breathing so it can fail. 30 -40 % gastric sleeve can have this problem. Hope this helps others.
  6. Common question and concern so you're not alone. My weight didn't budge for 10 days after my revision to sleeve. Water weight for sure, body adjusting to major surgery. Everybody is different, some drop a lot the first 2 weeks, then stall on wk 3. I was kind of glad my stall (lack of a better term) was right away.
  7. Anyone had their weightloss surgery done at Oasis Hospital in TJ with BariatricPal TeamMX? Starting into look into getting my band and plication revised to a gastric bypass but can't afford my surgeons price :/ If anyone can share their experiences I would aprecciate it

    Sleeve vs Bypass

I had the sleeve in May 2016, and my mild, occasional reflux became reflux from hell. I had a revision to bypass October 26. I am not sure if my experience is normal, but I have had a lot more difficulty healing from the revision than the sleeve. I am still very sore internally, and it seems like it is taking forever to heal this time. I can't help but wonder if I would have had a better experience had I gone with the bypass initially. Don't let this discourage you, but if you have ever had issues with reflux, do NOT have the sleeve. Best of luck to you!
  9. I need some inspiration...I've had this love/hate relationship with food for the past 25 years! I've always been a stress/emotional/bored eater. In 2013 I had the Lapband...day of surgery weight 319. After 2 years, and for the first time in my adult life I saw 199 on scale. That was absolutely the most amazing feeling I'd had (weight related) in my adult life! A couple of months after that, things changed drastically, I began having complications with the band and ended up in the hospital for a week...discharged with all the Fluid removed from the band. Frustration and anger set in and the weight began to pile back on. Today I am 1 week and 1 day post op from band to sleeve revision. The original plan was band to bypass...during surgery, due to extensive scar tissue from the band and complications with my intestines, my surgeon went with the sleeve...which he had discussed with me prior to surgery, saying that could potentially happen. I kept my hopes up for a successful band to bypass...#1 reason being that I felt like I "needed" that restriction! I don't remember feeling hungry after the Lapband! I'm only a week post op and I'm hungry! I don't know what to do! I don't remember feeling this emotional after the Lapband! I read and I read and I read...I know that everything says follow your Drs post op diet to the "T" or you could damage your "new" stomach. Last night I made the mistake of getting on the scale. Morning of revision surgery I was 302...last night my scale read 297...I was devastated! Per dr recommendations, full liquids are to start today...in my hungry, desperation, feelings of failure...you name it...pity party, party of 1 ????...I ate about 4 teaspoons full of low fat cottage cheese. Now I'm beating myself up and I'm terrified that I'm not going to get this right! Can anyone offer me some advise on how to deal with this emotional roller coaster I feel like I'm on and how to deal with wanting to EAT, not drink?! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Sleeve vs Bypass

I had bypass 5 weeks ago, no complications yet, besides getting a little dehydrated. Initially I planned on the sleeve, but my pre op tests showed that I have reflux. This was a total surprise to me since I've never experienced the symptoms. Reflux can be made much worse with the sleeve, and can require a revision to bypass. I didn't want to risk that, and though I would have preferred not rerouting things, I felt comfortable with the bypass knowing it has been done for much longer than the sleeve with great results. Another plus is that bypass patients usually lose a little more those who are sleeved. I don't think you can go wrong either way, though if you have reflux the sleeve is a bit of a gamble.
  11. Hi im actually having my re-sleeve revision today due to similar issues you stated in your post. I originally had the sleeve done in October of 2012. I haven't been able to find much information on people that have had a resleeve done. I will definitely give you as much feedback as i can through out my journey!

    Is my goal weight achievable?

I agree with both posters but wanted to add that I chose the sleeve because it maintains normal anatomy. In fact I backed out of getting a lap band several years ago because I was worried about a foreign object because of a preexisting autoimmunity problem and seeing how many people are having them revised I am glad I waited. I am not sure the vertical sleeve was an option, I was offered an RNY . Maybe I had other more pressing medical problems.

    Sleeve vs Bypass

I had RNY bypass 2 years ago, lost 152lbs and have been at goal since March. I chose bypass because I had gerd and that can get much worse with the sleeve requiring a revision to bypass anyway. I have had NO complications at all. I can literally eat anything that I want, not that I do. The only exception is eggs, my stomach just feels heavy when i eat them so I dont. If you get your blood work done on schedule and take your Vitamins everyday, bypass is an extremely effective surgery. By the way, you have to have your blood work done and take vitamins with the sleeve as well. Both surgeries are aggressive but effective. RNY creates a small pouch for your new stomach and reroutes which provides a malabsorption factor that assists greatly in weight loss. On the other hand the sleeve creates a banana shaped pouch and removes the other 90% of your stomach. As you can see.....both aggressive. RNY is the gold standard in WLS surgery but the sleeve is fast becoming just as popular however there is less long term data available. The important thing is to choose a surgeon you are comfortable with and do your research.
  14. Yes, I see that upon reading. Doesn't change my friend's experience To OP, I hope the revision works well for you.
  15. I think she's saying two docs have said it wasn't done properly. I'm not any kind of medical expert, but the shape does look odd to me. I don't think it's supposed to be barbell-shaped like that. I also think that you should have lost more weight, so maybe the sleeve just didn't work for you. It happens. If it was me, I would think long and hard about revising to something else though, since sleeve didn't work for you the first time around. Maybe try a different procedure? 16. I am curious also what they think they can do with a resleeve if it was done correctly. I have a very dear friend who also had a sleeve and never felt restriction. She was eating and drinking properly. After about 2 years, she got a revision to RNY. She has lost all the weight and has maintained for 2 years now. I discussed her story with my surgeon at first consultation and he said it is rare when the sleeve doesn't provide restriction but it happens. He still convinced me to go the sleeve route.
  17. So would a surgeon re sleeve you if they are saying it was done properly? I mean, how much more could they take? Most people revise to an RNY. I'd be curious to see if anyone else has been re sleeved also.

    Any Las Vegas sleevers?

I do think the sleeve is a much much better choice than the Lap-Band some people have great success with it but unfortunately it was not one of them, I'm looking forward to having the revision done so you'll have to let me know how you are doing! Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

    Any Las Vegas sleevers?

Dr. L did my lap band 4 years ago I wish I would have looked into other options because I was scheduled to do the sleeve but then they told me my insurance was not covering the surgery about 2 months into the process therefore my options were limited and I had to cash pay so I did the Lap-Band it has now slipped and caused major complications! I am going to Blossom Bariatric and having a revision to sleeve l. I liked Dr. L I just think I had other options to pick from but was vulnerable and desperate for anything kind of my fault I guess ..lap band was 9 grand and I was able to make payments with no interest and the sleeve was 17,000 cash no payments. Blossom is 12,500. Everyone has a different story they weren't to bad at oband center just felt alittle cheated. I wish you the best of luck and I am sure you will be in great hands! 21. I was out for 4 weeks went back to work for one week and now out again this is 2nd week. I pulled stitches inside on left where my port was (had revision from and to sleeve). Not sure how I did it, think it was simply the way I bent down to pick up a pen I dropped. Everyone is different. Just take it as easy as you can. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  22. Im looking in to getting a revision from lap band to sleeve. My paperwork was submitted on 10/24 and found out today that it was partially denied. I was approved to have the lap band removed but denied for the sleeve. My doctor's office will be doing a Peer-to-peer appeal on Tues or Wed. Did anyone have to go through that with Aetna? If so, what was the outcome?
  23. I never had a sweet tooth but now anything sweet turns my stomach. I really think it's because of pre op and all those Meal Replacement shakes. I really really hated that stage lol. My biggest taste bud change is I don't crave breaded fried foods anymore. I stayed away from breaded fried foods after the band in 2009 but I still craved them. Now after the revision, I prefer grilled fish and roasted onions vs breaded fish and onion rings. I'm wondering if it's because I'm just not "starving" anymore and therefore it's easier to make better choices. I'm really not sure. Either way, I'm so glad that switch is turned off. 24. Hello everyone Haven't been able to chat for a while like I have want to. I again had complication and just got home from having the lower intestine revise. Had a obstruction and a lot of scar tissue which was preventing me from keeping food down. It has been a nightmare for me but I hope this is my last time. Within 11 month have had 3 surgury and 4 dilation. I believe this time I will be better. I do feel a little better. I really love this support group and need all the support I can have. I have a question. I have had this cough before I had surgury and it is not a pneumonia. I scream of pain even when I hold on and hug a pillow tight to support my stomach. I was wondering if anyone recommends or have wore a belly belt for extra support. Please let me know. Thanks Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. I'm three weeks tomorrow from a revision from LapBand to sleeve. I thought I would be ready to return to work quickly, but I've decided that I'm waiting this out. I had planned on returning to work the week of Thanksgiving but have decided to hold off until the next week. I get tired-really tired-after I do much of anything. I work in sales and spend a lot of time in the car and can't imagine driving for three or four hours now. I'd fall asleep! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
