Almost 1 week post op!
cindyw41 replied to lala1234's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Walking only for 6 weeks or until your dr allows you(My wait was 8 weeks). Walk a little longer/further each day. Then it was a gradual increase of running and weight lifting. If you have a Planet Fitness near you, you can get a membership for $10 a month and they have free personal trainers. Are you eating yogurt, s/f Jello, s/f pudding, s/f Popsicles? They all count toward your Fluid intake and was allowed on my 2 week liquid post op diet Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
How Do You Stay Cool Without Ice Cream?
AZCristi replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
I'm 12 years post-op... I can no longer eat dairy - I've become lactose intolerant... the only dairy I can eat is yogurt. There are several frozen yogurt bars, frozen fruit, my favorite is the sugar free TROPICAL Popsicles - I buy them by the case. We're addicted to them in my household. I should also mention, I live in Phoenix, so summers are brutal here. -
Unfortunately without the nutrition information it's hard to say. A good source of Protein will not have more than 10x the Calories than it does protein. For example if the yogurt has 12 grams of protein it shouldn't be more than 120 calories. When I eat yogurt it's Oikos Triple zero. 15 grams protein in 120 calories. Be careful of hidden carbs too. Certain cheese can have more carbs than others, some veggies are higher carb too. And most yogurt is pretty high carb too. Carbs can sneak up on you and sabotage your efforts. Low carb works great for me but only if I keep my carbs really low. I have to stay under 30 net carbs a day (preferably under 20) or the weight doesn't budge for me.

Just under 3 weeks out and busy!

Baby food is not the best choices for food of any kind. Can you make your own purees? Or leverage Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, refried Beans with cheese, ricotta cheese, unsweetened applesauce as long as you eat some Protein with it, Cream soups, Of course I would also leverage my favorite protein shakes which are ready made and easy to pack in your lunch. They are Premier Protein ready made shakes. They have 30 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and 160 calories. Once you can mash things with a fork, leverage fish......very high in protein, low in calories and absolutely works well following WLS. -

Hand on your heart - how bad were the first few days after getting sleeved?
beautiful_alarms replied to skinnyjeansatlast's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my VSG on Friday, I stayed in the hospital until yesterday. The first day and a half were a bit harsh with pain and nausea, but it was controlled with medication. I threw up twice, but I believe that was due to the radiopaque stuff that I had to drink for flouroscopy to show that I had no leaks. By Saturday night, I was feeling way better. Fatigue like whoa, though! I've been sleeping on and off with walking around the house and sipping liquids and eating yogurt and strained cream of chicken Soup. I've had nothing at all for pain since Saturday night, not even Tylenol. I have some aches, but nothing worth taking medicine for. I've had to take anti-nausea medicine a couple of times since being home, but that seems to be easing off, too. The worst part is the lack of energy, but even that is slowwwwwly getting better. -

Pre op was hard. 2 weeks of following the plan to the T. Lost 16 pounds pre op. I walk alot. I started working out today as a matter of fact. Elliptical and free weights. I'm using a gym in my building. It's free for employees. So I don't have a trainer but they do have posters all around of different exercises. I eat alot of yogurt, Turkey burgers, and Protein bars. I can pretty much eat anything but those are my favorite. Once I have my 6 month follow up I will definitely try other foods. Oh and I like eating Cereal with no milk. Make sure you stick with your plan that your doctor give you. Good luck Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App -
In terms of eating, some things I do that I think are helpful are: I try to minimize carbs that don't have good Fiber - stick mainly with whole grain breads and cereals, fruits, and legumes in the carb category - sugars and simple starches can make you hungrier, in addition to being less healthy I do try to eat with good variety, not just chicken breast and broccoli 24x7, I mix it up, try new things, like making my own smoothies, or trying the par-boiled farro and bulgur grains that Trader Joe's sells, a recipe for seared lemon-pepper fish filet... I do allow myself some fun foods, but they are rarely "the full monty", for example I might have a frozen yogurt bar, some whole grain crackers with guacamole, a small veggie pizza with whole grain crust Mentally speaking, if I find myself thinking of a big slab of blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream, or a large pizza with pepperoni and sausage and extra cheese... I "change the channel" mentally, quick!

I do not like the strawberry at all. However I enjoyed the chocolate one mixed with milk and the chicken Soup one during the clear liquid phase. I also have been putting the unflavored in my yogurt and some Soups and it mixes very well and to me it is virtually tasteless! -
Advice on nutrition when flying 2 weeks post-op
trekker954 replied to vamping's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I take my own yogurt, stick it in a qt size clear bag without a problem. You can mix some Protein powder into it at 2 weeks. When you say short trip, I don't know if you mean a quick turnaround or a short flight. -
Advice on nutrition when flying 2 weeks post-op

Hi there - I flew for an about 10 day trip at 2 weeks post op. My flight was only 5 1/2 hours long and they served a really good cheese omelette so I was fine on the flight. I just made sure to have something before boarding - I think I had a greek yogurt at the airport. I also bought a pre-made Protein shake at the airport after going through security and brought that on the plane. I drank half of it towards the end of the flight and the rest on my way to my accommodations. More important thing is to buy a big Water to drink on the plane. I was in first class so the attendant kept my water glass full, but with all the potential delays and etc good idea to have enough water with you. While I was on my trip, I relied heavily on my Blender Bottle and protein powder. The blender bottle was one of my smartest purchases. It saved me! -

I've heard you can take pre made shakes if it's medically necessary (not positive though) might want to get your dr to write a note for it. Yogurt is usually easily found, so you can always buy some when you get to your destination. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Sleeve set for September 14

Feeling nervous is normal! I did not feel nervous, but I think that makes me NOT normal, lol! I jumped right in with so much excitement. I'm just normally a very brave person. It's my personality. Most people feel very nervous. But I'd be lying if I said you don't need this, because you do. Yo-yo diets fail most of the time. They even make you gain more weight back. So you do this, and you make it yours! As for losing 4 pounds in 2 weeks... That is very easy to achieve. I lost 9 pounds in 1 week on the liquid diet. Just stay hydrated, drink just liquid (protein shakes and yogurt are life savers). -
How many times a day should you eat?
JamieLogical replied to juneau's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told to wait 20 minutes before drinking after eating, but usually have to wait closer to 40. Eating AFTER drinking isn't going to stretch your stomach or make you eat more food or anything like that, it's just uncomfortable, because your stomach is still full of food. You need to wait for the food to pass through your stomach to make room for liquids to move through. That's just trial and error until you figure out how long to safely wait. For me, if I eat until my sleeve is "full" it usually takes 30-40 minutes before I can comfortably drink. If what you are "eating" is liquid or liquidy (protein shake, Soup, yogurt, chili, etc.) then you won't have to wait as long, because that stuff passes through your stomach quickly. -
I'm officially 1 month from my surgery date of 7/22/16! Stats: Height: 5'6" HW: 180 Pre op: -7 SW: 173 CW: 155 Total Loss: -25!!! Drs Goal: 150 My Goal: 130 I couldn't be happier. I've lost 18 pounds since surgery which is 4.5lbs per week! I know the high BMIers put up better numbers, but I'm thrilled! I'm 5 lbs from dr's goal and 25 from my goal. I'm on soft foods until 8/31 then I go to a "normal" diet. I haven't done a lot of experimenting with food, because once I got to purées, I wasn't hungry anymore. What I'm eating: Premier Protein shake - 30g Fat free Fage greek yogurt w/ stevia - 18g Premier Protein Shake - 30g 2 oz Salmon Sashimi - 12g 1/2c fat free cottage cheese - 10g I'm trying to phase the second shake out with real food, but it's just so handy and I'm one of the few who love Protein Shakes. I only get my 64oz in if I drink Vitamin Water zero. Water hits my stomach a little harder for some reason. Still taking my ppi and Vitamins religiously. I've never has GERD, and I thankfully still do not. So far no loose skin or hair loss, but I think that will be down the road more if it happens. So far, I looooove my sleeve!!! I had to do a month long liquid diet the only solids on it being cottage cheese and yogurt.. ( not sure I can really call those "solids" lol However it was hard really hard.. I lost 28 pounds though.. the "liquid diets" are to help remove some of the fat from your liver because it has to be moved during the surgery in order for the docs to do the sleeve and or rny. I asked why... That was the answer I was told... I was also told it shows the doc your serious about the surgery and you have the fortitude to live the new lifestyle. I am not saying it was easy in all honesty it was a nightmare for me I hated it... I don' t like the Protein Shakes every one I had tried is just gross.... It was difficult because I can be so very picky.. considering how fat I was.... you would think I liked everything.. I didn't But I eat my Protein now... a lot of meat a few veggies... it's been hard... sometimes you just want a different taste... I have been experimenting with ways to add to my food choices and it's been hard. But it IS possible. just got to work at it.

I am very strategic about my Protein, i usually try to get my protein as high as i can during each meal, so i don't have to eat large amounts to meet it, i try to be as creative as possible with my meals so i don't get bored. So, i will make a lamb salads, or slow cook meat with beans/legumes, roasts with veggies, chicken salads, fish etc I try to add non meat Proteins, nuts, cheeses as well to change it up and increase the protein amount Eg, you could make a lentil and lamb salad, add greek yogurt to dip the lamb in, sprinkle some seeds/nuts, add some feta... awesome.. thats practically a quarter of your daily needs just there! Eg. I make an open taco bowl... lamb or turkey mince, old el paso taco seasoning/sauce, red Beans, white beans, onion, tomatoes, capsicum, fresh corriander.. cook it all up, then put it ontop of a "salad" of iceberg lettuce, tomato, corriander, red onion, capsicum... its yum! I find Mediterranean and middle eastern recipes do this very well

Surgery is getting closer.
Hiraeth replied to Kaylaseibert's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Why are you nervous? Are you nervous about the surgery, the diet, or both? The surgery was easier than I expected. My only challenges were the gas pains that lasted for almost 2 days and getting in enough liquid. My pre-op diet lasted for one week and was actually pretty easy. I didn't really feel miserable like some people say they felt. I made sure to drink at least 3 Protein shakes a day and eat about 2-3 light and fit yogurts a day. Also, drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself fuller longer. Good luck! -
Late June Sleeve Buddies?

Hey there I do the Greek yogurt the oikos triple zero for low carb and high protein. I agree with @@ShelterDog64 try to mix it up with eggs. I am into poached right now but like scrambled with a little cheese, turmeric or hot sauce. -
Veggies can be difficult to digest this early out. You also have to be careful with seeds (zucchini, cucumbers) as they can get stuck in your staples or incision and cause complications. Try sticking with things with Protein such as cottage cheese, refried Beans with cheese, strained or pureed Soups (no rice or pasta), greek yogurt, etc. Be sure to get plenty of fluids. You may still need to supplement with Protein drinks or shakes. Be sure to bring Water and protein Snacks to school. Good luck.

I do much the same, Magoosmom....I have Protein in my coffee right when I get up (I am one of those people who staggers to the coffee machine immediately upon waking), then some greek yogurt an hour or 2 later. I had not been able to tolerate an egg at all, but then I tried making shakshuka the other day and it was fabulous! Eggs poached in tomato sauce and onions, with some cumin. Maybe them being poached, maybe the tomatoes? I don't know, but it's the first egg I've been able to eat. I see you're down 48 lbs...that's so fabulous! We're all fabulous!! But where is Maggie? I worry.
