    For the ladies

I had the worst period of my life after surgery. Mine are always a little iffy as to timing, but I really wasn't due for another week and a half. Normally I have very light periods and mild cramps. I had horrible cramping and clotting, super heavy flow and it lasted for TEN days. I am so over it and hope next month will be back to normal.
  3. It is definitely a much more complicated surgery and you have to find a surgeon who has done numerous ones. They will essentially undo the GB and make it a sleeve and then DS. It takes about 3-4 hrs and an overnight stay. But, it can absolutely be done

    September surgery buddies!!

I'm glad everything went well!! My period showed up a few days before surgery too, luckily it had lightened up for the day of. I kinda wish I had a cath, I was up every 2 hours needing to pee. About the hunger! Same! It's the excess stomach acid, at least for me. It's not just noise, right? Like it's actually a little painful? I could literally be watching my family eat and totally not be interested with no stomach reaction, then later take a sip of a protein shake or just water and then it's painful gurgling feed me now time, like I woke up a beast. It was the worst the first week and now it's tapered off, I assume because my body is adapting to how much acid my stomach needs. This video also helped ease my mind! https://youtu.be/m5NCKvkr7rU

    September surgery buddies!!

Hey Sptember pals, Had my VSG on 9/15. Stayed in hospital overnight. First day after surgery I slept most of the day while anesthesia wore off. Had a catheter, so didn't have to worry about going to the bathroom. Fun surprise though, my period started two weeks early. Doc said it happens a lot to women that have been on liquid diet. I was really light and actually forgot until I got up about 8hr after surgery. No biggie, they had put a pad on me post surgery. Anyhow, had no problems walking. Pain wasn't bad, but I had pain meds. IV pain meds until about midnight when they switched to oxycodone to see how I'd react to it going home. Also had a nausea patch. No nausea and pain wasn't too bad. Worst part was getting in and out of bed. Or rolling over in bed. That remains now that I'm home. Came home yesterday around noon. Stayed on top of the pain meds every 4 hours and still walked around the house a bit. Today, feeling better. May fully switch to Tylenol by this evening.

    SURGERY IN OCTOBER

I did do a “last supper” because I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to eat the foods I love ever again. It was all sorta silly now looking back because I can eat anything I want. I don’t have anything I cannot tolerate in moderation. Basically it was just that much more I had to lose post op. I didn’t go crazy though thankfully so it wasn’t like it was that big of a deal. Just remember the more carbs and stuff you have the more you crave them. So if you have that junk the last couple nights before your pre op diet it will be that much harder to stick to the pre op. I had my last supper a week before so that I could detox from the carbs and stuff BEFORE I had to start the pre op diet. Something to consider.

    3 weeks Post Gastric Sleeve

I am 3 weeks post surgery today and officially on the pureed foods. I find moving onto pureed foods extremely difficult and eating this consistency makes me feel sick. I am also convincing myself that I can have solids and when I do I just throw up. I’m not sure what to do or eat and I just really needs some motivation😖

    SURGERY IN OCTOBER

food restrictions are temporary. After awhile, you'll be able to enjoy the foods you do now, just in smaller quantities (and for some food items, just as an occasional treat). I didn't really have "food funerals" beforehand, but I did go out to eat a couple of times the week before my pre-op diet to have a couple of things that I knew I wouldn't be able to have again for a few months. I didn't overdo it, though.
  10. I find that I can participate in the major holidays with a small portion if I am reasonable. By that I mean don’t celebrate ALL day, just the one plate at the dinner or event and no leftovers later. And I mean truly only the major holidays as in I only celebrate my own birthday with food not everyone else’s and not every graduation or baby shower, wedding, etc. i basically try to keep it to once a month or less that I eat off plan whether that’s a holiday or not because it’s too easy to find an excuse if you partake in everyone’s celebrations you could be doing it every week and that can get you in trouble. One job I had did what was called a “life celebration” once a month on the first workday of the month and that was to celebrate everything happening that month whether it was someone’s retirement, bday, or an actual holiday like thanksgiving, etc. everyone brought in food and treats that one day and some were holiday themed and others bday theme or whatever applied and most people would choose a plate of food and one treat and be done with it. That would’ve worked out well for us post surgery. as for excuses for the events I don’t want to partake in, I usually either say i just ate, my stomach hasn’t been really feeling that great today or I am not a big fan of seafood or carrot cake or whatever it is. If it’s at work and they will see you eating your own food you could go with I’m dieting or I’ve had some medical issues and I’ve been working with a nutritionist and I can’t have it. I find that people like to hear that it looks delicious and you’d love to have it but your not allowed. And if they press just say no I’ve been bad too much lately or something like that. I love the idea of I’d love to take some home to have later if you don’t mind. You can offer it to someone at home who doesn’t struggle with weight or just toss it. Most people just want to think their hard work is being enjoyed and most likely don’t care when.

    Gall Bladder problems After VSG?

My bariatric surg was 8/8/22 5’6 highest weight after 4 kids (2,4,7,9) and a challenging relationship with their dad for 14 years. Down maybe 30lbs by now. When I was told on 9/12 I had a 26lb weight loss and told my GB had a stone so 10/3 is my surgery. It came to surface bc my pcp needed a f/up mri from a pancreatic cyst and Found excess Fluid in my stomachs. my surgeon said normal but not my gallbladder even the cyst is normal. Worse part is my mother and auntie both very judge mental and critical told me to pray. My mom said “People Get addicted to Surgery, not bc you feel better Eventually but bc the anesthesia😳😒) this being a Med necessity! But I’m so tired of the non support I’d honestly threw in the towel recently.

    SURGERY IN OCTOBER

You just have to get through it - make sure you finish all the preop stuff in time so you don't get delayed. You will likely have to do a pre-surgery liver shrinking diet which, depending on your doctor, might be all liquids or otherwise very restrictive, which will suck. Some do 1 week, some do 2 weeks (I had to do 2 weeks which was not fun). I think I saw one poster say once they only had to do 3 days. Whatever it is, just keep thinking towards post-surgery and how much your life will change. Good luck!
  14. I had the sleeve done on 9/8/2022. So i am just a little over a week out. I am starting to feel better, but I am STARVING. I am just drinking the protein stuff I am suppose to , water, and the protein soup. I have another week before I can be on soft foods. Also wondering if I can have a marijuana edible. I do not smoke, but would like to have a relaxing edible. Am I suppose to be hungry after this surgery? I though it was to shrink your stomach and appetite?

    Food Before and After Photos

The lentil stew I made for my work lunches this week. 1tbsp oil. 1 onion, 4-6 stalks celery, 2 large carrots 2 yellow bell peppers- all diced. garlic minced (measure with your heart). Cumin, ground coriander, curry powder, ground turmeric, pepper, bay leaf, 2 cups red lentils, 4-6 cups broth. Salt to taste. Add oil to large pot over medium high heat. Add diced veggies and sauté 2-3 minutes. Add garlic and sauté 1-2 minutes. Add spices and cook another 2 minutes. Add lentils and stir to coat with spices. Add broth and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook about 15-20 minutes.

    October 2022 surgery support

i transitioned to my pre op diet in august. Mine is 50 carbs a day (total, not net). I knew with my eating disorder issues I needed to slide slower in it so I would not backlash into binging so I transitioned down over a couple weeks. Been about three weeks at 50 carbs a day (ok, had about two days that i did less than 75) and it’s going well. I can eat a wide variety of things to keep it interesting. Early on i was ravenously hungry despite eating plenty but my brother (who has done keto before) told me to up my fat content and the hunger disappeared. I totally miss some foods, but not a lot. Beans used to be a big part of my diet and they are too carb filled for now. Rice, pasta/noodles and tortillas were also staples and are now not good choices. And most fruit is very carb filled, but occasionally I will carb budget for a lovely apple which tastes so sweet now. I had already cut out most bread so that wasn’t a big deal. following the diet I have lost 18.6 lbs in three weeks (69.6 in 2022 total) … so worth the shift in eating!

I have started the pre op early. To prep myself when it begins. My preop is breakfast shake, lunch shake, dinner 4 oz of lean meat/tuna and 2 cups of non starchy veggies. 1 snack (2 string cheese or 6 oz carb master yogurt, or 1 cheese string and 4 oz of carb master yogurt) I think I can do other snacks but I don’t like them. My WLS team advise me I was pant to do 4 oz eggs for dinner. Eggs seem to fill me up and keep me fuller longer. Bone broth has become my best friend. I really like the chicken Zoup Bone broth. It curbs those cravings. And the calcium citrat chews, at 4pm I chow down on those 3 that I am allowed to have. But will have to stop them 9-27-22. All I can say to prep myself and keep myself in track is to remember Be BORING when it comes to my food. And keep my focus on my goal. It is really hard when I am cooking for my kid, and making them sweet tea or buying them snacks. LOL my kid asked if it was bad thing I had to cook. I said “I guess that depends on who is doing the cooking and who is doing the eating” lol He tells me it’s isn’t that bad. I said good you can do it with me. He laughed and said ummm I don’t have a relationship with food the way you do. And I am already skinny. (He was not being negative, we have a sarcastic joking relationship) I just reminded him he said the diet wasn’t that bad. He laughed and said I am don’t need to suffer cause you had a toxic relationship with food. I am going I am going to get a new healthy relationship with food and set those boundaries!!!!
  19. He has put me on the diet 1 week prior to surgery but I'm going to try for 2 weeks prior Oct 19th is my life change day.

    Starting my journey - Advice

Hello Ella97, there are a few of us here from the Uk and I personally have found this forum really helpful. There is always some one on this forum who has the same little niggle that you are struggling with and a kind word with a suggestion to ease the worry. As you have been advised, a 3 week break is a good time to have the surgery. In the UK we have different regimes pre surgery, than in the USA and we do not have the counselling or psych services that are the norm over there. Pre surgery, I read a lot of the back pages of this forum, I gained so much knowledge and just knowing that I could be posting before and after photo's like others on the site in only 6 moths to a year really spurred this old girl on. Just imagine how wonderful you will look next summer !

    insurance frustration

Oh yes but not via insurance. I had to pay for my surgery in a private hospital as everywhere in the UK was swamped with Covid cases and all surgeries were put back and non essential surgery was stopped altogether. The hospital had its bariatric services audited and the surgeon then had a holiday which all put my surgery back at least 2 months. For a few weeks I felt like I was unjustly punished, the ' why me ' syndrome kicked in. I was so upset. Then I got over it, what else can you do ? The days dragged by and then I was into the 3 week pre op diet so they dragged even more but I got there in the end. If your part of the world is into winter when you have the surgery, be ready, You may feel really cold, I did. Even in the house I needed lots of layers. I hope you get it sorted soon

Just had the sleeve done Sept 12th

Hello and welcome to the forum. We all had a terrible first few weeks after the surgery. There are so many new things to fit into a day. Drinks, tablets, walking and so much resting and snoozing. Its so much but it does get better at about a month out. What are you anxious about mostly ? We will have the answers and helpful tips you need at the moment.
  25. Sip your water CONSTANTLY! Don’t allow yourself to get dehydrated. If you do, (I did) then call your doctor and they’ll arrange for you to get some IV fluids. Don’t worry so much about hitting your protein goals for the first few days. Just keep drinking. Start incorporating some bone broth and protein waters. (My fave is the blue Protein2O.) Walk some to get the gas they fill you with to move! Take chewable GasX. After about two weeks start your chewable vitamins (I take Barimelts. Multivitamin with iron, B12, Biotin, and Probiotic.) Add in Zinc along with your Biotin to avoid hair loss. Take Senekot to help with constipation. I’m trying to think of anything else I do….. I hope this helps!! 😁👍🏻
