Nutritionist Rules - What did yours say?
labwalker replied to Sunshyne068's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When I started my NUT (six visits!) I was tracking my calories already. Her main concern was my Protein intake. I would have instant sugar free oatmeal with blueberries for Breakfast, and she would always comment that I wasn't having protein intake for that meal. Now I have low fat Greek yogurt and blueberries for my breakfast. I also started eating a lot of fish and chicken for my lunch and dinner meals, and started eliminating unneeded carbs (breads, pastas, rolls... the stuff that adds useless calories.) I was able to keep my calories under 1000, while keeping the protein at 80 to 90 grams. My NUT, and the APRN who does my fills and follow up visits, both want to see a minimum amount of protein. My NUT showed me plastic samples of food, and told me to be aware of portion sizes (what a cup of something looks like.) But, I was never told to limit my portions, and my APRN told me not to worry if I was eating more than a cup of food at a meal. I assume if I have future fills that lead to intake restriction, I may have to reduce portions. The NUT said always to eat the protein portions first, and then fill on the veggies or other foods afterwards. -
And the WTH have I done feeling has hit
TijuanaPlication replied to amw's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
I found Yoplait yogurt drinks to be great when I moved to full liquids. They have a resealable lid so you can just sip a little as and when I got hungry. Fermented milk (ie yogurt) is generally well tolerated even by those with lactose issues. Maybe something like that will help you. All the best - you've not got long until mushies - although it seems like an eternity!! -
And the WTH have I done feeling has hit
Deakay replied to amw's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
I've been on mushies for a week and still do 2 protein shakes a day just to get it all in. I'm afraid I will try to eat too much getting all of the 70 - 80 grams a day with just food. And I'm kinda lazy about packing lunch for work 2 shakes and a yogurt and I'm good til 2:00. I had my WTH moment as soon as I woke up in the hospital....it took a couple days but is all good now. AND I beat my coffee addiction while sleeping on morphine for 2-1/2 days! Go me! -
It sounds like you're doing quite well. I couldn't do the protein shakes, either, but my saving grace was Chobani brand Greek yogurt. Each small container provides 14g of protein. It takes me about 20-30 minutes to eat one but I try to get in 4 per day. I focus on other types of protein (cheese, salmon, tuna, beef) for other meals. I'm not eating raw fruits or vegetables yet--still on "mushy" foods.

Hi all! I'm at day 17 post-op... I am able to have about 1/4 cup of broth, around 3 oz's of Jello, pudding or mashed potatoes at my meal time... I have a horrible time getting down my liquids or Protein shakes( maybe 32oz's a day). I also tried yogurt and cottage cheese only about 2-3oz's of those as there consitancy is a little thicker. I know I'm full when I feel it sitting in my chest! It doesn't feel very good and I have been walking daily! My 2 week post-op the other day I was down 17lbs so I was happy to know this must be working... Everyone is different and I know it is going to be a journey for us all but this forum is a great tool to have at our finger tips. Good luck to us all

Gauge'sMom posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello All I'm 7 days Post op and I'm fighting my cravings. I still feel like I can eat way more then I'm supposed to and I'm scared. I've been able to eat about 6 ounces of soup and yogurt and apple sauce. My nutritionist says 4-6 ounces but I don't get that full feeling I just stop causr I know I'm supposed to. And I can't seem to regain my strength. I get tired very easy. Any suggestions are appreciated -
I am 5 days post op had Oikos Greek Yogurt (not allowed fruit on the bottom yet) and I love it. It stayed down great & was smooth & thick.
-
Ugh I can't stand it either! But I have never been a yogurt eater! Change in habits are so hard to make!
-
I too bought Healthy Choice Yogurt and ate 2 of them (there are 3) in the container. Tasted so good and then I felt bad that I did it. I just needed a little something that turned into 2 little somethings. Never again.

One week post op
FieryRed replied to GlutenFreeSingleMom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved Wednesday and had hunger pains within hours of surgery. For the first two days, it was almost constant. Even after I ate/drank, when I should have been full. So it made it hard to realize when I was actually full. But the hunger pains are lessening and now replaced by digestive pains. lol Have found my favorite meal is a flavored Greek yogurt with a scoop of unjury, a splash of milk and an ice cube in the blender. Alternately, a vanilla greek yogurt with Unjury, a squirt of Mio and ice is good too. -
Am I the only one that doesnt miss food/eating?
gamergirl replied to gamergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pizza, pumpkin carmel bake and pumpkin cheesecake are. The yogurt isnt, and I didn't put the protein ice cream because we basically took a shake and put it in an ice cream maker so doh! Confessions Of A Junkie
Grateful_Love replied to Soon2BskinnyCyn's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks for sharing this. I'm newly sleeved, less than a month out. I took your story to heart. I feel like I have been "pushing" myself to be "normal." I need to learn my new normal and then accept it. Because I've had the thought, "it's just one regular pudding cup (husbands)..it's just like yogurt." I stopped myself. But that thought process has got to go. again, thank you guys for the wisdom and the proof that getting off track and then getting back ON track is possible. Keep us posted -
And So Our Journey Begins...
MistyAnnMoon829 replied to MistyAnnMoon829's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good news, my stall finally broke. I am now 259. Amen, hallelujah, I can see the light, lol. It was a shock. I only stepped on the scale today out of habit rather than making it a priority. So I lost 1.5 lbs overnight. I'm so pleased. Nothing else to report really. I tried carne asada last night, with some cheese, avocado, and sour cream. It was delicious and my tummy handled it fine as usual. It still took about an hour to eat. I also put two of my greek yogurts in the freezer so I will have some froyo for dessert tonight. -
And So Our Journey Begins...
MistyAnnMoon829 replied to MistyAnnMoon829's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Same weight today, peeps. Hopefully this is the longest stall that I have. I guess since everything else about my surgery has been picture perfect that I needed to have something to make it not 100% awesome. Tried the Dannon Light/Fit Greek yogurt, in Orange Cream and it was pretty decent. All my past experiences with greek yogurt had been terrible so that was a relief. Took me an hour just to eat 1. Then about an hour later I had some tuna so that I could up my Protein intake with out drinking a shake. I need to increase my protein, I think I will be going back to 2 shakes a day and a meal somewhere in there. -
I don't do fake sugars or stevia. This morning my Protein shake was greek yogurt. Isopure Protein powder, almond butter, cacao (unsweetened chocolate) powder. A little bit of Water to blend and ice to make it cold. I mostly just play with favors I like. Fage 0% Greek yogurt plus Isopure naked whey protein provides a good 30 - 38 gms of protein. It's not too thick because I use water instead of milk. I ma vegetarian and have a lot of food allergies. Artificial food dyes & fake sugars are 2 of them. I use the Isopure because it's just plain whey protein. No added sugar or colorings. If I want to add sweetness I typically use raw honey.

You can try getting your fluids and Protein in one go. If you are dehydrated or malnourished you are going to feel bad. Protein drinks really are trial and error. This is why it's helpful to work with your nutritionist. Sometimes the big name ones aren't going to be your cup of tea. My NUT gave me a list of acceptable drinks but also gave me basic guidelines of at least 15 gms of protein per serving and no more than 6 gms of sugar and just try to keep carbs low. Armed with that info I went around and tried various powders, pre-made drinks and liquid Proteins. Initially I used CVS brand whey Protein powder and Prosource no-carb Liquid Protein. Then I started using Isopure unflavored whey. With the CVS brand I mixed it with almond milk, FAGE 0% greek yogurt then added a ton of ice and a little bit of Water. It would take hours to slooooowly sip but I kept adding ice keep it cold and as long as I went snails pace slow I had no problem keeping things down. The Prosource no carb was good for mixing with herbal tea. Isopure mixes well with everything. Yogurt, juice, hot Soup, tea or coffee. When I started eating I found I had to go super slow. I would put a super small bite on the very tip of the spoon. Chew that until it dissolved, wait 2 minutes before I took another bite. My first egg took an hour to eat, but I kept it down. In between I walked. At 2 weeks post op. I was cleared to drive. At 3 weeks I resumed aqua fit class.

2 Tablespoons of Food. Really?
JamieLogical replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That doesn't sound right. Yogurt was considered a "full liquid" for the purposes of my diet stages, so I was allowed to have as much of it as I could tolerate. -

Jovie62 replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was eating more than 2 tbsp of yogurt in the hospital. Just really slow. Also I was able to have 1/2 to 1 cup of Greek yogurt for a meal. I just ate really slow. You're eating about like I'm eating and I'm sticking to my doctors and NUTs menu to a T. So ni, don't worry, we're just fine! -

That doesn't sound right. Yogurt was considered a "full liquid" for the purposes of my diet stages, so I was allowed to have as much of it as I could tolerate. That's what I thought too from reading everyone's responses over these past months. I thought that yogurt would be one of the foods that I could totally eat. But she limited me to 2 tablespoons. I asked again to clarify. She said take two bites of your yogurt and put it back in the fridge. -
Seriously I don't want to complain about this surgery, It's what I wanted and did it for a very good reason. I'm 5 day's out and on full liquids I feel like thing's are falling apart and I'm just trying my best to hold it all together. I'M STARVING!!..I've gotten in all 64oz of Water and 80grams of Protein and I'm so hungry I'm about to crack! It doesn't help that my husband decided it would be an awesome idea to bring 2 large pizza's into the house for himself and my small 4 year old daughter that will only eat 1 slice, But yet he thought it was necessary to get two after I told him to get one..This isn't head hunger. It's not acid reflux or the need to drink more water, this is stomach eating hunger.. Taking my pain pills and wrapping up in a blanket for a long night's sleep, At least I won't feel hungry then. Hopefully.. Hi there Baby...I've been reading your posts for a while now. Please don't be discouraged. I too get hungry and it has been that way since about the 5th day post-op. In fact, I broke the rules on the 6th day post-op and had yogurt and cottage cheese and refried Beans with melted cheese. Not saying you (or anyone else) shoud necessarily do that, only that the hunger is real and I feel you. There have been many times over the past 4 weeks that the rest of the family has been eating something really good..like hamburgers and french fries and yes, PIZZA! These were formerly two of my favorite meals. It's hard to sit there and smell it and want to have it, especially when you are truly hungry. I would sit down with my low-fat pot pie Soup and eat that. When I would become full fast, it would remind me that even if I wanted what they were eating, there was no way in heck I could even get down a portion of any of it. Other than that, I had to just walk away. They asked for chocolate chips Cookies the other day and I was going to make it for them. But after some thought I knew if I did, there was no way I could stop myself from sampling some cookies. So I just didn't go there at all. As my mother always likes to to say, this too shall pass. Good luck to you!! I know you will be successful with each pasing day.

Even when I'd moved on to yogurt and cottage cheese, I still wasn't feeling full. I couldn't feel my stomach at all. I called my clinic worried that maybe there was nerve damage or something. From what I understand, it takes a while for your stomach to come out of the anesthesia and shock and trauma of surgery. I didn't feel what I recognized as "full" until I was eating flakey fish.

Can you get de-banded after being banded?
sue in ne replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are several yogurt brands out there. there are Light, nonfat, and sugar free versions. I think Dannon and/or Activia has a smoothie drink. Whatever you choose it should be w/o chunks- No "fruit on the bottom". Weight Watchers has some you may like and don't seem to have fruit pieces; they are lo fat and sugar. I try to check the amt. of protein grams / serving in the container. Some are as low as 3 while others are 7-8.. Some use gelatin and others do not. Yoplait has several Whips. Lights., and regular versions without fruit pieces. -
Today I Start 2 Week Pre-op Gastric Sleeve Surgery Diet
Kristin replied to mouse trap's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My 1st week of pre-op consisted of 3oz lean meat and 1/2 cup veggie and that is all besides 2 protein shakes and water for the rest of the day. I don't think it will kill you to have a little yogurt, the doctor just watch the amount of carbs...the high protein diet is used to shrink your liver for surgery, making it easier for the doctor to perform the surgery. As my dietician stated, "the pre-op diet is not just to torture us". LOL Good Luck with everything! -
Protein bars are a huge slider for me. And it sucks, cause I love them. Had to put a hard limit on protein bars of three a week...cause sometimes I'm not that interested in cooking or assembling something healthy and it's just too easy to pick the delicious double chocolate answer. (and then pick it again a few hours later). I know that if I eat food with texture, I'll stay fuller longer. Want to get fiber, work on staying off supplements and crap, eat real food..... Need to keep up good habits...so I limit protein bars now. (Still keep one in my purse always) Oatmeal is a slider for me unless I make it pretty stiff, do steel cut oats, and put cherries and pecans in it. If I do my delux super oatmeal...it doesn't slide so much:) Same with refried beans...if I add the cheese and salsa and avocado and junk...I stay full. By themselves, they slide a little...but not as bad as other things. Yogurt with fruit, nuts and whole grain granola...same. Lot of soups slide...which stinks, because I love soup. My veggie soup doesn't slide so much. Split pea and bean soups are pretty decent to keep you full, too. Nuts are delicious and naughty. I love them and I eat them daily, but portion control sucks with nuts. SO densely caloric! I measure nuts in Tablespoons. And those suckers slide like crazy by themselves.
