  1. Has anyone experienced changes in tolerating foods after surgery. I know you can't tolerate certain foods post op but I mean being able to eat something and then suddenly you can't anymore. I was sleeved on July 15 and have been able to eat watermelon since about a week post op but today I had some watermelon and felt so sick I could only lie the floor in pain and then I threw up. What happened? I haven't had any problems before....

Glad to hear you reread your info. We need to stay away from sugars! Yogurt id good for you but stick to greeo yogurts. High in protein which will help to keep u feeling fuller. Yoplait greeo 100's or the light and fit greek is good too. Just watch which you choose for sugar content. Also the plain nonfat greek is good too if you like it. Good to substitute for sour cream or add fressh fruit for the natural sugar sweetener. I also ise it when making my own protein shakes. I do half cup frozen berries, about 3 oz of skim milk, half cup of greek nonfat plain yogurt and a scoop of vanilla or plain whey protein isolate and half a banana. Its good for 2 servings and about 300-350 in cal depending on ur fruit and protein u use. Just stick with foods high in.protein amd low in fat and the less sugar the better. Try to stay away from premade or boxed anything. The more natural the better and the lbs will start to melt away. Dont forget to exercise religuosly too. I am just 7 months and am now down 117lbs so it works. Good luck to you and congrats on your journey.

    March Sleevers

This week I averaged 530 calories a day.
  5. At 3 months post op I have lost 65 pounds and 51% of my excess weight. I have more energy, and am so much happier. I have not regretted this decision for one minute, and Celebrate my progress every month when I do my monthly check in pics. Loving my sleeve!!! You'll probably need to click on the thumbnails to make them big enough. :-)
  6. Out of nowhere tonight I suddenly felt like I had to vomit, 3 hours after I ate dinner. I spit up a lot of liquid, and had a horrible burning sensation in my throat, and taste in my mouth. I've never had acid reflux, I suppose that is what it was? I haven't been taking my prilosec the last few weeks, since I thought maybe after two months with no problem I was in the clear? Questions - I did really well yesterday at thanksgiving, except I ate a big chunk of skin from a deep fried Turkey. Could that trigger an attack over 24 hours later? It's the first time I've had anything that fatty in probably eight months. It was the only thing I've done out of the ordinary, today was back to my regular diet, although I did fund a beef Jerky with no carbs, and had about half an ounce of that with lunch. I had pepcid complete in the house, and chewed one of those. I'll call the doctor tomorrow, but can I restart the prilosec tonight? Should I sleep sitting up tonight? Would that help prevent another episode? If that is what people with gerd go through, my sympathy level has just gone through the roof. What a miserable feeling.

    How's everyone doing?

Hi everyone, I was looking on this site last night for recipes and found you guys. Actually I found Lisa under a food post. How you doing Lisa? I was suppose to talk to you that one afternoon at Dr. Fowler's office, but we lost each other in the shuffle. And how are you Miriam? I spoke with you at the September support group meeting. I think you were in our group when we split into groups. Your the one who wants to be able to sing again, yeah? Well it's good a bunch of us are all in one spot. I've been bouncing from support sites back and forth. I'm usually on ObesityHelp.com or Bandsters group on yahoo. I have found that this site has much more information, especially about FOOD.......lol :biggrin1:. Miriam, I think you and I are at about the same stage in the healing/eating phase as I was banded (final one) a day before you. My journey has been anything BUT normal as I had to be re-banded. I went in for the first banding on Weds., Sept. 26. After surgery and when I was up on the floor I got out of bed and started walking immediately. Dr. Fowler came up and was happy to see me walking so fast, but the news he had for me was a little upsetting. He said that my liver was one of the biggest he's seen yet and it was 5 times the size that it was suppose to be. He said I'm lucky that I decided to have this procedure when I did or 5-10 years down the road I'd be in big trouble. He said my liver didn't like the food choices I was making and then he said that he put on the "medium" band and that it was VERY tight and that I'd be lucky if I could swallow my own spit. Boy was he right!!!!!! I think he meant it as a euphemism and not to be taken seriously. All night I kept spitting into that pink emesis bowl. The next morning I went down with the lady next to me to get the swallow test and came back up to the room with a thumbs DOWN. Jennifer came up to my room and told me basically that I was swollen shut and I had to try to wait it out for the swelling to go down. Talk about totally BUMMED. To make a long story short, we waited day after day until Dr. Fowler realized that the swelling wasn't going to go down and that the band needed to be replaced with a larger size. He tried to get an anesthesiologist to do it on Sunday, but his friend was off island. When he said there wasn't going to be surgery on Sunday, I asked him if I could please try to drink some broth or tea and he said sure. I think it was more of like a "knock yourself out trying but nothing's going to stay down." Finally on Monday we headed back into the operating room. One good thing about being re-banded is that I got the new AP band that I wanted.....yippeee. You have no idea how hard it was being in the hospital from Weds. to Tues. and 5 of those days being hooked up to liquid nutrition (IV). I had such a hard time trying to sleep in there too because every 4 hours was glucose stick time, every 5 hours was vital signs and every 6 hours was the "bruising" heparin shot. It seemed that every time I turned the TV on, I was inundated with fast food commercials. The Taco Bell cheesy melt was a KILLER. I don't know how the rest of you ladies felt about the hospital, but I hope I never, ever have to be admitted to there again. While the nurses/aides were extremely nice, they (most) were not well versed in taking care of bariatric patients at all. I even explained to a few of them what it was that I actually had done. There was also on at least 3 occasions when they brought me food trays and I had to tell them that I was NPO and couldn't have anything to eat. The one aide said, "Oh your so honest." They finally put a sign above my bed on FRIDAY saying NPO so the others would know. Two different times I had to ask if my heparin was discontinued and they came back with my shot and told me, "thanks for reminding me." Geeeez, they sure have a long way to go if they're trying to become a Bariatric Center for Excellence. Well, that's my saga so far. How is everyone doing on foods? I keep reading my materials from Mary and at times am confused on what I'm suppose to be eating. One handout says at week 2 full liquids and another at week 2 says pureed foods. Thank heavens for this support site to find out what I'm suppose to be eating. I made this recipe for black bean Soup I found on here and it's really good. I feel I could eat the whole batch I made. I think the only time I've felt full so far is when I ate some cream of wheat in which I kept diluting it until it made I swear 2 cups. Sorry the post is so long. Hope to hear from you guys.
  8. 1. Read well. Posts don't come with body language, vocal inflection, or a life tour. If the OP didn't write it, don't assume it! 2. Ask lots of questions...carefully. Never reply with "I think/believe/am pretty sure you really want/mean/feel ___." Instead, simply ask if it is possible they really want/mean/feel something different. Give the OP time to reflect without feeling misjudged. 3. Empathize along the way. \(~o~)/ (>_<) (T_T) 5. Offer options, advice, and suggestions rather than "you should ____." Explain the costs and benefits to help the OP make an informed decision. If you are responding to a medical question or concern, emphasize professional resources and not your personal experience or hearsay. 6. Does your advice stem from values or opinions the OP doesn't share? If you don't know, find out. Respectfully explain any relevant differences when posting your advice. 7. Avoid over-generalization. There are relatively few things that can be said of all or no people. 'Some' is a safer word. When being more specific, try to use numbers (citing research) in place of words like most, few, many, often, etc. Likewise, 'you might be ____' (stating a possibility) is safer than 'you are ____' (stating your assessment as a fact). 8. If you feel offended by a reply, contact the author and/or moderators privately. Emotional debates and public offense over matters of opinion just detract from the larger conversation, causing stress, anxiety, hurt, and division. 5 Weeks Post Op

You're right. Just lost so fast the first 2 weeks and not much after that. Sometimes I've got to remind myself that this is for life and not a short term fix. Thanks and best of luck to you

    Some guidance please....

1 week seems waay too soon to me, but them I'm just going by my doctor's schedule. He simply won't do a fill before 30 days (of course you can get an unfill at any time if you are uncomfortable). I'm personally very wary of any doctor who is way too aggressive with fills. Any fill runs the risk of extra swelling, and that can really become problematic if food gets stuck, and some people have had to have total unfills when that happens. Good luck!
  11. Hey all I am 3 weeks post op and I so full all the time. I just started blended food. If I open a can of tuna I can only eat 6-7 bites before I am stuffed. Is this normal? Should I be able to eat more by now? Even Protein drinks. I can only drink half and it takes me so long to drink it. Water goes down good no problems there. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!! ????

    Some guidance please....

My doc is aggressive with fills, has an excellent success rate and an A+ reputation here in Dallas. He has said once we start the fill process, I can see him every week if need be to get to good restriction. You'll hear all kinds of stories here. Since you presumably researched your physician beforehand, trust his judgement and do what feels right to you.

  15. Going on 4 weeks post op and I have been good to follow all directions thus far. Not advancing my diet yet, still staying off caffeine, etc. I've been a good girl. Really. But today, I was offered a piece of gum and I nonchalantly accepted without even thinking. As a matter of fact, it never once crossed my mind until an hour later when I accidentally sucked that bad boy down! Damnit. So, I'm a little over an hour out and still drinking Water with no problem. I absolutely refuse to contact my surgeon's after hour coverage unless I begin to vomit or feel discomfort. Just curious...anyone else experienced this little mishap? How did you rid yourself of the gum? Run its course or surgical removal? (Lesson learned....NO more gum so please no lectures) Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

    Idiot alert...

Chewing gum post op is frowned upon by most surgeon's. At least as early as I am. Those that don't condone it forever, still require you to wait around 12+ weeks. It can cause blockages and require surgical removal depending on the situation. Can cause you to swallow more air than usual. And a few other things.. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App Most surgeon's what? This is the first i am EVER hearing about not having gum. Is swallowing gum really that common? I chew a lot of gum, never even stopped when i had my sleeve. Was chewing a few days post op

    1st appointment not tI'll june

So if the pathway is similar to here (just to say) then first appointment will be probably a meet n greet, set up if future appointment and if you qualify for help. I don't think you automatically qualify for surgery in England as its seems as Cosmetic surgery but it may mean a long term weight management pathway, shrink and maybe last appointment is a year or so down line. Friend in Brum had his done via NHS and his PCT was 3 appointment spread over 2 years . Call them up and ask for a closer appointment, may get lucky Fridge Pickers Wear Bigger Knickers ????

    Bruising

I only had very slight bruising, it was a bit yellow, but I'm 2 and a half weeks out and still have a good amount of pain at my large incision. I'm just now starting to be able to sit up to get out of bed instead of rolling out!
  20. I am 3 months post op and I have lost 53 Lbs. last week I had emergency gallbladder surgery! Since the removal of my gallbladder, I cannot tolerate any food. Without too much Information, it doesn't stay in my system long at all. Carbohydrates are the safest thing at the moment. High protein/high fats are very destructive to my system at the moment. Any advice/suggestions to make it through this period? I'm hoping my body will adjust- but I struggling to make my protein goal at the moment!

    Day 2 post op

This happened to me, as well. I received two units of blood and then had to go back to surgery to look for bleeding. They didn't find anything. I ended up staying 3 nights in the hospital. I came home on Friday, November 13th. I am 12 days out now and feel completely healed. On another note, my taste and smell have changed dramatically. My breath is very bad. It is hard for me to get in my Protein and liquids. We are going out to lunch after church today and I am already wondering what I will eat. I'm so ready to get beyond this 'recovery' stage and get to place where I feel 'normal' again. On a positive note, I am down 24 pounds since my surgery. 46 to go!

    Question for PostOps!

Since I can only eat like 4-5 bites of anything, I'm hungry again 90 minutes later. I counted the calories I'd be getting if I stuck to my dr reccomendation of 3 meals a day and I'd get in about 350. So I eat numerous times. Probably 7-8 times a day.
  25. So I'm at 7 weeks out and the weight loss has been very slow. I've only had one fill so far and have little to no restriction. I know that what I've done so far has been through sheer hard work and determination. But while the scale doesn't want to move, I've had three people at work approach me in the past week and ask if I've lost weight. So at least it's starting to show a bit - gives me motivation to keep it up!
