    Feeling down….

Almost through my 4th week post op…. 3 weeks with no real weight movement. I know I’m a bit dehydrated - I’m assuming that’s why I have crushing fatigue. But not enough so that fluids are warranted apparently I’ve worked on increasing my calories and protein. It’s hit or miss but I am getting a decent amount, but my weight isn’t moving at all. When I say the fatigue is crushing - I mean any exertion of effort wipes me out. I see my pcp tomorrow - but I’m not sure he will have any suggestions the surgeon and nutritionist haven’t already offered. I am measuring and weighing every bite and I am only eating what I’m suppose to. I don’t feel well enough to exercise so I don’t imagine I will have much progress until that happens. I feel stuck/trapped right now. I know it will pass… I’m sure things will get better. It’s just really hard when I can’t even stand at the sink to wash dishes. My family is being very supportive and helping (kids and husband) but that almost makes me feel worse. They are doing things I should be. I just want to feel better. I’m trying to focus on the positives, I’ve lost weight, my body’s changing, my clothes are getting bigger…. I’m wearing things I couldn’t before. My Kees still hurt, but less. My liver is improving. My health is going in the right direction. Tuesday is 5 weeks. I don’t regret the surgery at all, I’m just disappointed in me and my lack of progress to this point. Sorry I just needed to vent my frustration. Thanks so much for listening.
  2. if you're swollen, that likely means you're retaining water. Might explain the weight issue. like others have said, it could also be the infamous "three-week stall" (that most of us experience) a little early - or you could still have some of the IV fluids in you that were given to you in the hospital. Some people leave the hospital up to 10 lbs heavier than when they went in!

    Gas and “smells”

I have the sleeve and I haven't noticed any difference from before the surgery. I just have to make sure if I haven't gone poo in 2 days, on day 3 I take something to get it moving. That's really it.
  4. Stalls suck, and they are normal, and they will happen a lot. I've had 3 so far. Each time, I gain 2-3 pounds and the stall seems to last a week longer each time. I just got out of my 3rd and I immediately lost 5 pounds. Now the scale is creeping along, which I've found is normal for my body right out of a stall. It'll pick up again. Just make sure you're getting in your fluids and protein. Stick to the plan exactly, and look for the non scale victories. Mine are: I can fit in a booth now with room to spare between my stomach and the table, I dropped a full clothing size and ring size, and now the ones I'm in are starting to get big, my double chin is gone. When you aren't seeing the scale do what you want, look for other things to confirm for you the surgery is doing its job.

Good luck to you and everyone else scheduled for this week!!!

    September surgery buddies!!

I had pain/pressure under my diaphragm around that time too, but it showed up when I was either reclining or going to bed. It worried me but it went away and hasn't been back for a week, so assume it was the last of the gas in my chest.

I had a lot of burping too the first week, it gets better but it really does make it hard to drink anything. I chewed a couple of gasx each day trying to get the burping to chill. It felt like even the smallest sip was enough to make me burp. Does your paperwork work explicitly say "water" or does it say "liquid"? Some plans keep water and protein (even in drinks) separate (dumb), but mine luckily considers everything I'm allowed, including jello and pudding, to be a liquid. If your plan says liquid, I would try protein waters, I use a clear protein powder drink mix every day. Also, I occasionally add electrolyte powder to the mix just in case. Don't beat yourself up too much about your intake, just keep trying for more each day, I'll be 3 weeks post on Tuesday and I'm just now meeting my protein goal but still about 20oz behind on my liquid goal.

    Reactive Hypoglycemia

Hi! I’m so glad to have found this discussion! I’ve been experiencing episodes of hypoglycemia that come on so quickly. I will admit that one time I drank a sugary drink and man, did I pay for it! (I had GB almost 3 weeks ago.) My blood sugar only drops into the mid 50s but I feel absolutely horrible. Sweating, shaking, feeling like I’m going to pass out… I see my doctor tomorrow as one of my follow up appointments so I’m going to ask about the other times where nothing I did seemed to instigate the sudden drop in blood sugar. Can anyone offer suggestions as to what you do when this happens? All I know to do is sip some orange juice. Thank you! 😊
  9. I so hear you!...im in the exact same phase as you are. We both are backsliding due to old problems and just plain old life getting in the way. First of all....give yourself a break. I literally weighed myself this evening after feeling like i was back up to my old weight. But of course that is all in my head...I was at my maintenence weight and doing just fine. We forget that we need to trust the surgery as well. That said...it's always good to do a mind and body reset. I was thinking about treating myself just like i did after about 3 months after my surgery where i was cautious about everything. Try looking new angles... Personally, i think im having problems with balancing my exercise with my calories. In other words, im eating too much because my mind thinks i need to eat more after working out so much. So...that needs to get worked on as well... That said...these forums are gold! ...i havent been here a while myself, but i know that the ppl and information here is THE best in the world!
  10. I saw him for my physical last week and he said when I get the o.k. from the neurosurgeon and now a hemotologist because I don't have a spleen and it causes my white count to be high that he will write my letter. The hemotologist said he didn't need to see me for that he will just send my surgeon for clearance. My neurosurgeon appt is on 9/29 so I hope I can get my surgery next month. My PCP tried to talk me out of it when I was there .I know what you mean about big breasts I passed a DD a long time ago. I may have to roll them up after surgery. loll I am glad your revision went well and you are on the road to recovery.
  11. They definitely are weird!! It’s so frustrating because I lost more weight on my 2 week liquid diet than I have since surgery… My surgeon says GB supposedly loses more weight, so I was expecting something by now. I am still swollen, so that may not help either. I just have this fear like omg did I do this for nothing 😳
  12. oh trust me i know. but the scale will drive you insane. at 3 months post op i lost maybe 5lb that was it. That was my 3rd month stall which is common. It will happen again and again.
  13. I'm no help with the elevated pulse, but I hope you find out what's up soon!! With the weight thing though, I'm feeling those feelings. I was sleeved Sept 6th, I lost 13lbs the first week, which was probably all water weight, because that first week I was barely getting anything down. I told myself I'd only weigh myself once a week, Tuesdays, but I broke yesterday morning and checked, and I gained a pound. I'm still on the liquid diet so that's wild, but I also figure my body is probably scrambling trying to hold on to what I can give it. I'm also only peeing like 3 times a day, which seems like so little considering how much liquid is going into me, and since that pee is light colored and not dehydrated, I'm taking it as an indication that my body is holding on to it. Bodies are weird.
  14. Stay off the scale for now. It will drive you nuts. You will hit stalls along your journey. I hit my first stall at 2 weeks post op. I didnt loose weight for about 2 weeks or so. you probably hit yours just a tad early which happens. Keep with the program and the weight will come off. I try to weigh myself every 2 weeks to 1 month. as for the pulse i am not sure there. I had high blood pressure before surgery and after surgery now i have low blood pressure. Where normally i would be in the 130-145 and now i am at 100 or so. (Blood pressure cuff) and my Beats per minute were in the 80-90's and now after surgery its low at around 50-60

    September surgery buddies!!

Tomorrow is finally the day! I haven't even packed my bag yet but I don't plan on taking much anyway. My biggest fear is that they won't let my husband stay with me overnight. We live over an hour away from the hospital so it would not be fun for him to be driving up only for visiting hours. Plus we both want to be together so it would cause a lot of anxiety if they won't let him stay. I am scheduled for my bypass at 9am so at least I don't have to get up too early. Not looking forward to the gas pain after surgery but so ready to finally have this surgery done. I started this process in Dec, so it's a long time coming. Also tired of the liquid diet so one step closer to real food is great. I'm even looking forward to pureed food at this point. Before I was sooo grossed out by the thought of it. I'm not even hungry on the liquid diet anymore but I'm bored with the same flavors and my intestines have not been happy on a high protein no fiber diet. Just ready to start my new life and eventually get back to a new normal. Can't wait to see what life looks and feels like in 3 months, so exciting! I think a lot of us have surgery tomorrow so good luck to us all and speedy recovery.

First Week Post Op Nerves Are Shot

I was going to comment about not being able to absorb more than 25 - 35 grams of protein at one time, but catwoman beat me to it. I would say the best thing now is for you to rest a lot so you can heal. Try to ease your anxiety and just relax and allow your body to heal. Walk when you can, inside and/or outside, but also rest and just track your protein and water. The first two weeks, I drove to a lot of places and just walked. Like Costco, the mall, etc. I live in an extremely hot environment and sweating when I'm trying to get every drop of fluid in is counterproductive, imo. Then after two weeks I went back to the gym for cardio only, then at six weeks I was okayed for resistance training. I recovered alone. I did fine. Family would stop by or come help when I asked them to, but they didn't hover at all. I used a binder for about ten days to minimize discomfort when I got up, walked or slept. Learn the log roll technique to help get out of bed, so you don't need assistance. If your family is driving you crazy, send them home. You need a calm environment to recover in. Call them for help if you do need them but let them know when you want to be alone again. Just follow your teams recommendations and take your families advice with a grain of salt. Your team specializes in bariatrics for good reason. As you said, your family have never been obese, or had bariatric surgery, so what do they know? :x

    August surgery buddies!

Good morning from slightly overcast San Diego (man I'm going to miss this city as I leave my home of 25 years a week from tomorrow morning). My 1-month surgery-versary is in a few days. There was a week when I was gaining weight (yes, even following guidelines)--probably from water retention, but it's coming off again now, and I'm less puffy having discontinued one of my two BP meds at my doctor's request. I'm down 31 pounds since the liver-shrinking diet (2 weeks before surgery). NSVs: 1. Yesterday, I went to Target with my daughter. It was the first time in ages that my back wasn't killing me, and I didn't have to stop and rest my hand against walls to relieve the back pressure. 2. I can fit behind the wheel easier... even when my thin 17-year-old daughter forgets to put the steering wheel back up when she's done borrowing the car. 3. I've been able to stand for longer than 3 minutes without pain, which helps me do more packing (soooo much packing... the movers arrive this coming Friday).
  19. I got my gastric bypass on September 7th 2022, and I’m not really losing weight yet… Is this normal? You would think the weight would be coming off being that I’m only on a full liquid diet, and following it exactly how they advise. Also has anyone else had an issue with elevated pulse? I had tachycardia before my gastric bypass, but was still cleared for surgery, however at the office last week my pulse was 167 which is way higher than it typically is. Also on lovenox injections. Super dizzy whenever I get up to walk around, has anyone else had this issue? I do have an appointment with my cardiologist on the 26th.
  20. Ok, breath. You just had a pretty major surgery. You’re going through a lot of physical, psychological & emotional changes & it takes time to sort them all out & work out what you’re doing. So feeling a little anxious is quite common. Yes, you can add additional protein powder to your shakes. You can add it to soups & broths too. Walking is the best exercise to begin as it doesn’t strain or overly tax your healing & recovering body. Remember you should limit your lifting, pulling, & reaching fir a few weeks while healing. Plus it helps with avoiding clots & with getting rid of any lingering surgical gas. Some activity is good but listen to your body as to how much you can do. Start with around your house inside &/or out a few times a day. Yes, you can go outside. (Funny they think fresh air is bad but they wander around your house with cigarette smoke over their clothes, in their hair & on their skin.) You don’t have any open wounds. The wounds are quite small usually each less than inch long & they’re covered anyway. Yes, bruising, swelling, tenderness, etc. around the wound sites is common. If it persists or gets worse contact your surgeon. Some people do have more discomfort after surgery & have trouble getting up & down to begin. Think of all the abdominal muscles that got poked, prodded & stretched (the gas alone stretches your tummy out) during the surgery. Some say sleeping in a recliner or propped up in bed helps. Others say binders help support the abdominal region. Sugar free popsicles contain artificial sweeteners which continue to feed your desire for sweet plus some can cause side effects like bloating, diarrhoea, etc. Water, shakes, soups/broths, herbal or green teas, milk, yoghurt drinks, etc. all contribute to your fluid intake. Mix it up for variety. Does your family really need to be there? I live alone & looked after myself without any issues after my both my sleeve & gall removal surgeries. Maybe it’s time to say thank you but I can manage okay alone now but I’ll call if I need help with anything.
  21. Hey everyone! So, I got sleeved on 09/13/2022! I usually bounce back quickly from anything, however I am so nervous something will go wrong or that I am doing something wrong! So, if anyone could help me with some of these questions it would help ease my mind some what… On the left side, where they pull the stomach through is it normal to feel a little hard, very very sore and a little bulge? If so, how long does this tend to last? I have had this since the day of surgery. Was anyone else sore just getting out of the bed? Did it feel like you would pull something doing so?! Did anyone else resume Vyvanse days after surgery? It seems to me that most people returned to normalcy immediately and that is not exactly happening to me. If you use shakes like Atkins, Ensure Max, Premier Protein can you mix them with a whey protein powder to get you closer to recommended amount of protein per day? Are sugar free popsicles the easiest way to stay hydrated? How many are ok in a day? Can I do low impact indoor cycling at a slow pace? Did you start walking for at least 30 mins immediately upon discharge home? And how long did you let your family stay after? While they are a HUGE help and I truly appreciate that I have each one of them…They are driving me literally nuts with what I shouldn’t do. (I shouldn’t do anything except stay in my bed and go to the bathroom.) (My mom thinks I shouldn’t even go outside to walk🤦🏾‍♀️) because I could get sick from being open and having a major surgery. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Not one of them have ever been overweight or had any bariatric surgery! They all smoke which is their choice I did too previously, but I don’t allow it my apartment, so they are in and out every 10-15 mins, especially on the nights they drink wine 😡… My sister is also here with her out of control, talking back to her seven year old😤. Any pointers or helpful thoughts are welcomed!!! SW219 CW206.7 GS09.13.22
  22. Yes! I can’t use any of the things I was depending on. No G2Z with protein, no protein shakes, no popsicles, no sf jello, no sf pudding, no yogurt….nothing sweet. It makes me so very nauseas. Blech. Sweet tooth is gone! During my week of full liquids, I pretty much lived on Progresso’s Creamy Chicken Soup broth and Manhattan clam chowder broth. They were all that tasted good to me.

    September surgery buddies!!

You are not alone. I’ve had to wash all the bed linens twice and had one unfortunate incident at a coffee shop with my hubs that ended with most of my clothing in a spare trash bag from the stall I was in…😳. So very humbling 🤦‍♀️😂
  24. Hi Kam. I am 6 weeks post-op. What are your questions?
  25. Once you get going on drinking plenty of fluids and taking your vitamins, it’s really not bad at all! I know it seems that way when you read everything I wrote but (seriously!) you’ll be fine! I was just trying to think of a the tips I’ve learned along the way. I had my VSG 18 months ago and my GB 2 weeks ago. I’ve read so much and received so much information from veteran patients I just wanted to share what I knew. I know you’ll do well. People on this site are very helpful. All you have to do is ask if you have questions about things. 😁
