Still stalled - and hungry. Where's the magic weight loss i was promised?
Seastars replied to Seastars's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I like these tips! Dr. Gail, I do think I'm over-relying on shakes. I still have at least 2 per day. (Pre-surgery, I was similarly reliant on Protein bars - at least one per day.). Pre-surgery I was mostly vegetarian, with some low-fat dairy, eggs and fish a couple of times a week. I ate a LOT of legumes and whole grains, and some nuts, for my protein. Unfortunately, those are high in carbs (part of why I got obese) so I've had to cut them out except as a treat. Fish is my main "solid" protein source now, at least once per day. I try to eat chicken and turkey but am getting a little burned out on it. Ditto cottage cheese. So all that is to say: (1) my body may be adjusting to a new, low-Fiber part of dieting along with the low-carb part. (2) since I'm still relying on shakes to meet my protein goals, I might not feel as satisfied - mentally at least. Maybe adding more fat will help. What are some good,non-red-meat fat sources? I do get some from oily fish. I have my 2% cottage cheese (higher fat, harder cheeses are not tolerated now). I could add more eggs. I used to (pre surgery) have ground flaxseed and olive oil on popcorn - nearly every day - but I know popcorn is out for sleeve patients, and nuts and hummus have too many carbs. I had a little avocado yesterday. I haven't reacted well to salad dressing, so that's out. -
I'm almost 6 weeks out from surgery and have lost 23 lbs since surgery (weight at surgery was 238 lbs). This seems to be a lot less than others have lost. I consume approx 800 calories a day and most days stay under 50g of carbs. I'm a vegetarian who doesn't eat eggs so getting in enough Protein has always been a challenge - I max out at 60g of protein most days. I can't stand the taste of Protein shakes so those are no longer in my repertoire. I've only just begun working out in effort to speed up the weight loss. I've had an extra-long period for the last 10 days which might be contributing to the holding on of weight. Any ideas on why I might not be losing as much?

Hi everyone! I'll be 5 years out in November. The day of surgery I weighed 351 and I am maintaining at 141. I'm 5'8. I also stopped taking my Vitamins about a year ago but my lab works comes back perfect. I was giving myself B-12 injections but had to stop because my Vitamin B was too high. I do take calcium once in a while. I'm a vegetarian so getting my Protein in is a struggle. I'm a super picky vegetarian About a year ago I was diagnosed with Graves' disease but I don't think it has anything to do with the surgery. Other than that, this surgery was the best thing I ever did. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Becoming vegetarian after surgery.
Smallbites2015 replied to tony031469's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hated meat at first, it just made me too full no matter how little I ate. I kept trying. Switched to chicken thighs as the breast I could't seem to get down. Beef still not that Great. I eat maybe an ounce of meat at a time because it feels me up so fast. I considered myself a vegetarian for a while after surgery but stopped when I could tolerate meat. I was tired of Beans and the carbs were freaking me out!!! Couldn't do eggs either, but no problems now... I have an eggs steamer and love the texture a bit better than boiled. If it doesn't work for You at first , put it Sade and come back to it later. -

I still like all the same foods... I don't think healthier eating as a vegetarian is automatic - chips, Cookies, candybars, pizza, full fat cheese, white bread, rice, potatoes, white Pasta, cake and pie for example have no meat in them but aren't real healthy. But so long as you do your research so as to make healthy choices and get a balanced diet, vegetarian eating can be healthier than omnivore eating. I still eat the flesh of animals, but really try to emphasize eating finfish, shellfish, chicken and turkey for my "meat", and to sample from beef and pork only occasionally. -

I don't have trouble with chicken. I just don't like it! Nasty... Many WLS folks have major taste changes post operatively. Every couple of weeks, try eating meat---tiny bits. Usually beef will be the last dense Protein to be tolerated. Don't give up the ship! I thought about becoming a vegetarian once, but am EXTREMELY allergic to all beans/legumes. Oh, bother... -

I'm 4 months post op and I'm finding it really hard to eat meat especially chicken. I find the taste to be raw like even though it's fully cooked and seasoned. Anyone else have this problem? Has anyone become a vegetarian because of a problem like this? Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App -

If you don't eat animal Protein, then substitute the protein of your choice. If you are vegan or vegetarian you are should already be used to this. It didn't say protein, it just kept saying specifically animal protein and animal meat. I don't think specifically saying animal protein for a universal post is helpful to those of us that have read things like the China study. Sent from my SM-G930T using the BariatricPal App -

When to eat what not to eat
Inner Surfer Girl replied to conquering_dreamz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It does sound like your surgeon is vegetarian. My plan is Protein first also, which in this case would be Beans. My surgeon is adamant that I get at least 100 grams of protein, starting the day after surgery. Protein and fluids are critical for healing and weight loss. Beans do have protein, just not as much as some other sources of protein. As to "feeling full", I go for "satisfied" instead of full. -

Yeah to the above message! Perhaps the biggest most wonderful change gthat I didn't see coming is the absense of pain or the great lessening of it. Joints, back, everything just doesn't hurt like before not carrying that horrendous weight around. I no longer live on advils and stuff like that. But yes I second the wish I hadn't waited so long, I'm 60 and absolutely damage was done to the joints under all that weight. I've had to learn to modify greatly HOW I exercise. And one other thing that I love: the damn operation seems to have sort of turned me into a vegetarian. meats just don't go down or sit well, so it's just not a big deal. I'd always sort of flirted with the idea of not eating meat but this has made that very easy to do -
Was up at the lake last weekend, visiting some friends (a couple of which are vegetarians). As everyone was partaking in a bowl of ice cream, I was asked if I wanted a little. I held my tongue from what would be my normal reply (being that there were kidlins around). Instead I politely declined and asked her if she would care for some dead dried out cow ( I was eating jerky).

Orbera Balloon booked in next week! Nervous, excited, anxious! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all, how are you all doing? I am currently overseas on business but I thought I would check-in with everyone. I am doing great and happy to report I have lost 9kgs (19 pounds!) in just under two weeks! With a low-ish BMI to start with I am completely stunned by the results! I've feeling fantastic and the only thing I can not eat is lettuce! For some reason it just kills my stomach. Discomfort is about a 2, no pain, no nausea, no smelly burps. I am vegetarian though so I think that helps as I don't have any meat sitting on the balloon. I am eating as normal but can not manage more that 600 calories a day. I am having Protein shakes which are helping. But generally I am very happy. I also managed the 14 hour flight to Dubai no problem and am currently in 50 degree heat and managing just fine! Not lightheaded or anything. I have been so blessed and I hope all of you have as positive an experience. -
What’s the Most Awkward Part of WLS?
lexiemustang replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have a coworker who keeps giving me diet recommendations. I "should be" eating this and I "shouldn't be" eating that. She knows that I have had surgery, and I keep reminding her that I'm on a "special diet" with a reduced stomach, so the "recommended" way of eating (half a plate of veggies and a very small portion of protein) isn't going to work because my focus is Protein first - whether it be via Protein shakes or lean meat (she's also vegetarian). She doesn't agree with protein shakes and meat as protein sources, because she says "I should be getting them naturally via veggies/beans." I am tired of explaining this to her, LOL. My other pet peeve - my family keeps telling me that I'm getting too small and that I don't need to lose any more weight. Even though I'm tall - I'm still a size 12. Far from skinny IMO. -

I ve changed animal protein to vegetal ones. I can't eat chicken anymore or pork or turkey. It hurts too much and I don't like the taste anymore. I eat instead cottage cheese, peanut butter, alpro yogurt, greek yogurt, tofu, black beans, lentils, eggs, milk. I feel is time to become a vegetarian. -
When to eat what not to eat
conquering_dreamz replied to conquering_dreamz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@kristenle. I am confused. I think my doctor is trying to convert me to a vegetarian. She told me to start with the Beans first and than the veggies. I'm like what about the meat. Lol. So I have been trying to have a lean meat only once a day. She said she doesn't want me to focus on scales and counting. Eat four times drink my 3-4 bottles of Water and take my Vitamins. I had a whole argument about what "I saw on the Internet". She said leave the Internet alone. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Is anyone out there a vegetarian?
kellilynn1107 replied to beachwalker4rny's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm 35 and have been a vegetarian since I was 11. I only eat eggs, cheese and drink milk. I had my surgery 11/2011. I honestly don't follow the guidelines anymore but my body tells me when I need Protein. My labwork is perfect and I have maintained my goal weight. I weighed 315 the day of surgery and weigh 141 now. I'm 5'7. I do however eat a lot of Beans and quinoa. I don't eat tofu because it reminds me of meat, if it looks like meat, I can't eat it. I'm just weird like that. Any questions, feel free to ask Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Anyone from Houston, TX?
Smjnranrk replied to Elyse519's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Awesome! I have ZERO trouble avoiding meats. I was a vegetarian for a really long time, but I was the kind of vegetarian that would load up in starches (Mac n cheese, Pasta, etc.) instead of veggies. Even pre-op, I've only eaten chicken. I don't remember the last burger or steak I had...it could be never! I get so discouraged by my nutritionist's plan for significant amounts of meat first, THEN veggies. I'd so much rather fill up on Beans and vegetables. I actually have an autoimmune disease that responds very well with no gluten, so I've had to eliminate most of that, too. I'm really hoping that the post-op diet I'm on right now will reset me for a cleaner way of eating in the long run. I do loooooove good cheese, though! Sent from my iPad using BariatricPal -

Can you eat all this in a day? HELP!
OutsideMatchInside replied to AchieveGoals's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I doubt you will be able to eat the yogurt early on, it can be dense. You might be better off with 3 shakes a day. It took me about 1 to 1.5 hours to finish a shake. Since they were a liquid, I could just sip on them as long as it took to get them in. The 20 minute rule didn't apply to liquids like Protein shakes. If you know a good veggie broth you like, I would suggest getting an unflavored Protein powder to add to the broth. All of my vegan or vegetarian friends are fat, except one that I think is just naturally thin. They are the worst sugar addicts I have ever met in my life. And there are tons of great Vegan treats in Chicago, which doesn't help. The metaphysical place that closed down about 12 years ago on the north side use to have the best vegan Cookies, I wasn't even Vegan and I used to devour them.
