    July 2023 buddies

Hi! Just got a date of 7/19 for the sleeve. It feels so real now and not gonna lie, I’m nervous, especially now that I have a date. I’m taking in all the tips/notes from this site, so thank you all for that!

Surgeon suggested bypass instead of sleeve.

I had the sleeve and loved it.....until I didn't. I lost 116 pounds in 10 months. I was working out 5 days per week. I was doing weight training, core and strength training, and cardio. THEN I started having major GERD symptoms. They were insane. I was put on 80mg of Nexium daily and still had break through GERD. Also has gastritis and esophagitis. 4 endoscopies and 1 colonoscopy later (and upwards of 30 polyps removed) I was scheduled for my revision from sleeve to bypass. I just had it done on the 28th. And while the recovery SUCKS majorly, I know once I'm past this, I'll have my life back. Oh, and I never had any reflux or GERD before, which is why I chose the sleeve to begin with.

    Ice cream cone

i've ordered a kids size ice cream cone a few times (if i had to guess, less than 10 times since i've been in maintenance over 4 years now). i have yet to be able to finish a whole one in one sitting (im a dumper so i generally keep ice cream servings SMALL). i would order a cone and get a cup to put it in so i could store the uneaten portion in the freezer for a later time(s), if someone doesn't eat my leftovers for me.

    Food Before and After Photos

I had19 teeth extracted 2 bone graphs and a bone removed from my pallet. last year (2022) on April 25th and was fitted dentures. The bottom plate has never allowed me to eat with them, and it took 9 months for my gums to heal before I could eat (chew- or gum) again .I lived for 9 months on Ramen noodles, rice and multi vitamins. So when it came time for my pre-Bariatric surgery "diet" it wasn't a big deal. Because I had just lived through a 9 month what I called "Denture Diet" My peak weight was 245, In Nov 2021 I was referred for Bariatric surgery. Due to the fact that I suffered from Insufficient veins in my calves, causing edema in my legs and feet. Spondylosis in my L 3-4-5, Osteoarthritis in my SI joint where the sacrum and sacroiliac meet at the pelvis and the anterior cart edge in my left knew was gone. I was fit for compression socks, heavy duty knee brace and at times I had to use a cane to get up and down and to catch myself if my knee buckled.( I fell getting out of bed, 3x in 6months) I developed hyperlipidemia, and was Pre-Diabetic. I couldn't stand for more than 10 mins , squat, bend, lift, ( making the bed, sweeping or vacuuming was torture.) or walk more than a block or shop for more than 30 mins. Because of Covid everything was severely backed up, once all of my pre-surgery testing and procedures were completed, it was Feb of this year( 2023 ) . I was cleared as a perfect candidate, but again -back log. At the time they said it may be June to sometime in August before the surgeon would available , and maybe longer to find a clear OR. It took so long to get scheduled there were a couple of procedures and test I had to repeat. On April 20 (23) they called me, there a was last minute cancellation for May 22, 2023, was that doable ? Oh heck yeah ! So on the 25th they had me starting my Pre-diet, All liquids except for Cottage cheese, At almost 3 weeks in, they were concerned my weight wasn't dropping as it should be ,and asked if was following the liquid diet, I was like what ?. NO .I wasn't told to. She said yeah on the 25th. Ok well this may mean we have to re-schedule. I was so upset. She said she was going to get ahold of my Case nurse to see what to do. A couple of hours later, I was like wait a minute. I called her and said I think there was a mis-communication. I have a copy of the diet, it didn't say Liquid . Just that I was suppose to start this diet on the 25th, and on the 20th right after she called I went and stocked up on EVERYTHING, and had the receipt to prove it. I asked when you said liquid did it include Cottage cheese. She said yes, Thank goodness. Yes I HAVE been on that diet since the 25th. I am very fortunate, I am a crazy fast healer,. I had all of this trepidation about healing right, and being able to get around ASAP. I am almost 60 and everything had been falling apart. My roommate is a very empathetic, compassionate , and a generous person, but what she is not, is a caregiver. So I was concerned about that. So I had my surgery on May 22, at 9 am. Woke up later in a hospital room, I had a horrible pain in my shoulder and it felt like someone kicked me in the gut. Tuesday morning I woke, still a little sore in the tummy ( like a pulled muscle) but other than that I was fine. At 3pm she came into discharge me, and told me to call my ride ( roommate) I ended up having to walk down to the nurse's station, because she said she would be right back to get my IV out ,but she didn't return, so I hunted her down. After I got it removed , she said she was going to go get a wheelchair. So I got out of bed, got dressed, gathered my things and sat on the bed and waited, and waited, my roommate called , I am here what's going on. I said she had to get a wheel chair. So I waited some more ,after like 30-45 minutes . Once again I walked down to the Nurse's Station hunting for her and pulled a "Karen", some guy showed up with my wheelchair, quickly. My roommate had been waiting in the Patient Pick-up zone for almost an hour and a half, she was fuming. I get home, go to bed, my roommate goes and picks up my pain meds it was liquid Tylenol and Liquid Gabapentin and Celebrex. When I took the liquids I almost threw up...WTH ? Out of curiosity, I looked up the ingredients. Freaking FAKE sweetener. I cannot tell you how many times I informed them I could NOT use any fake sweeter, because it gave me severe cramping stomach aches, vomiting, or IBS. Just two days before the surgery they tried to give me three Ensure to drink ,which I already knew had the fake sweetener, and said no can do, Keep them. And now my pain killers had them. I was like do you feel actual pain? Not really, just some tenderness. So I threw them out. The rest of the day I was up and around, doing things. And the next day it was like I never had the surgery. I live at a Studio Apartment complex with 16 units. My roommate is the on-site manager. So as I went back to my normal on the 4th day, ( with the weight lift, carry, push-pull restrictions), and the tenants were all like " I thought you were having surgery this week ?" I said " I did. On Monday." None of them could believe it. So that is my story. I am disappointed with my weight loss so far, ( it's been a month) as I have only lose 17lbs since the surgery. But I also considered, due to my 9 month "Denture Diet"( I lost 25 lbs,but once I was able to eat again I got back up, so, it may have changed the immediate weight loss factor. I have lost 45 lbs. So maybe that is why. So below is my pre-food, my favorite a plate FULL of (Foie de Veau Lyonnaise) Calf liver in onions. and my new diet. 4oz ( with a total of 2oz of food) containers with liver, mashed potatoes and broccoli.

    Regrets

I am 7 days post op. From the moment I woke up I was livid with myself for doing this! I was miserable for every single day in some way. I cried and raged and regretted. Then today I wasn’t super enthusiastic but the regret as I feel some hunger symptoms and don’t need pain killers all while liking the taste of water again, is definitely subsiding! I went from a 10 to a 2 on the regret scale! I wish this would be changed from being classified as elective surgery to restorative. Heck, if a woman needs to have her breasts repaired and replaced after a mastectomy it isn’t called elective, but reconstructive surgery. Palliative care in the weight loss surgery world needs to improve for sure. So we don’t all wake up immediately angry at ourselves. We could wake up proud for taking steps to restore metabolic function, cute diseases, and add health to our longer lives.
  9. Weight loss is SO individual. Keep with your program, and you will lose weight. Between my preop diet and 2 months post op (10 weeks total), I've lost 48lbs. And i stall a lot. You got this!

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Hi all! I had surgery on 6/13 sleeve to bypass revision. I was struggling with the liquid diet and I had some fish (cod & salmon) in small portions but only 10/11 days post op. I feel an aching pain in my left side all of a sudden but am passing stool so I dont think a blockage. I didnt lose any weight on my 2 week marker, I remained the same. Did I damage something? Also having a hard time knowing when I am full. Good luck to everyone out there
  13. Hello all. I’m needing some advice or help. I had the sleeve December 21 and had lost 80 lbs. I still had 10-15 to get to my goals so I started mounjaro in may. I’ve done great so far and have lost 12 lbs! We increased my dose to 5mg on Friday; and I’ve been an absolute mess. My body feels insanely exhausted. Walking up stairs I’m huffing and puffing. I can’t workout. I’m exhausted. My anxiety is through the roof. I also am getting married next month as well as moving 3 days after the wedding. I know I have a lot going on and I’ve been truly ok with not being overwhelmed. Friday we increased the dose and I’ve just felt so odd. My body feels like it’s a million lbs heavy and is so hard to do anything cuz it’s so heavy. I feel nauseous sometimes and most foods if not all foods make me feel repulsed. Nothing sounds good. Literally nothing. I’m barely eating. It’s been bad. I just don’t know if this is typical with increasing doses and if there’s anything I can do to feel better? I’m deff decreasing back to 2.5 or even stopping completely. I don’t wanna risk feeling this way. I’ve been just hysterically crying with anxiety and body weakness all day and yesterday. Does anyone have anything similar they’ve experienced??? Thank you!!!
  14. 10 months ago I had my sleeve (with a hernia repair) done… to be honest I had expected to loose more weigh fast than I have but I’m very pleased with my progress so far. I’ve had LOTS of long stalls (weeks at a time) along the way … and I did manage to loose 57 pounds before my surgery. My highest weight was 382… surgery day I weighed 325… this morning I weighed 247. It’s been nearly 25 years since I have seen this weight! It’s taking me a while, but I’m getting there… I still have a way to go, but I can’t be mad about loosing 135 pounds (78 since my surgery). About the hunger… for me, I notice when I’m not drinking enough I feel “hungry”. It’s more about hydration (for me) than hunger. If I stay hydrated - I don’t seem to get those hunger feelings. Stick to your plan and track your intake (food and water) … it really does help. Best of luck.

    My Gastric Sleeve Journey

My progress has been slow but steady. Sometimes I get a little frustrated because my loss isn’t as fast as others, but then I remind myself this isn’t a race and I’m working to a life long change not just a quick fix. I was over weight for most of my adult life, that change is going to take some time. I met a new “mini” goal today (I broke my weight-loss goals down into 10 mini phases/goals) so that felt pretty good. From my highest weight… I’m down 135 pounds! (57 of that was pre surgery loss, 78 since surgery). I’m hoping when I go for my 1 yr check up… I will be down 100 ponds post surgery (which will make 157 pounds lost if I hit that goal). Best of luck - hope you’re recovery is going well! You’ve got this. 🥰

    I’m terrified

My surgeon wanted me to lose 10-12 pounds, before surgery. They put me on Ozempic and that gave my body the little boost it needed, to start the weight loss. I lost 13 pounds on the Ozempic and when I had to stop taking it (because the clinic couldn't get any more samples and I couldn't afford it). They gave me a Rx for naltrexone and Wellbutrin, that seemed to help me stay on track and not gain. I had 4 months between the last of the Ozempic and my day of surgery. Maybe ask your team if there's anything that you can try. I was on OHP at the time (Oregon's version of Medicaid). They wouldn't cover the Ozempic, but they did cover both the naltrexone and Wellbutrin.

    I’m terrified

You got this! You've got 5 months to go! I would ask them exactly what you're concerned about: what if I'm 1 or 2 pounds over? I have a patient care coordinator who helped me with a lot of my questions. Does your surgeon have something similar? 10 years ago I had major surgery (an ovarian cyst roughly the size of a gall9n of milk plus a gall bladder that was completely shot) and I was opened from above my navel as far down as they could go.Because of my size, I ended up with a wound vac. The pain was rough. I developed a mantra as I breathed through sharp pains from getting up, sitting down, etc. "Today is better than yesterday and tomorrow will be better than today." It helped me a lot, even on the days it wasn't true. 😉 You've got this!

    My Gastric Sleeve Journey

So, I woke up Friday evening around 5pm in my room. I have no idea how long the surgery was and I have no idea how long I was in recovery. I was told during a nurse shift change that I'd had a hernia repaired as well, which was news to me. The nurse allowed me to keep the leg massagers on which was nice. My mouth was SO dry and they said I could have ice chips. They brought in a 64oz cup full of ice, then got mad when I said there munching on ice, lol. Around 9pm, the nurse asked me if I wanted to walk around the hospital wing and I said I did. At first she was worried that I'd fall, but I was pretty comfortable on my feet and did 10 laps around the wing. She seemed impressed and told me that I'd be surprised to know how many people have the surgery and refuse to walk. A few hours later, I had really bad chest pain and no one seemed to know what it was. One nurse claimed it was gas pain, another said that it was probably associated with one or more of the incisions, another claimed it probably had to do with the hernia fix or the tube they shoved down my throat. Saturday morning, after being told all day that I couldn't eat or drink anything, they brought in a breakfast tray with a cup of chicken broth, a jello cup, and a bottle of water with a crystal light packet. I appreciated that and was able to get about three sips out of the broth, a couple small bites of the jello, and a couple sips of the crystal light. The flavor was lemonade and it was wonderful. I then asked the nurse if I could walk again and she agreed. At this point, I wanted to up my laps from 10 to 20. On lap 17, my surgeon appeared in the hallway and told me that he was glad to see me walking. He asked if I was able to keep down the liquids that I'd been given and I said that I had. He asked if I had any nausea or anything, which I didn't, then he asked me if I wanted to be discharged or spend a 2nd night in the hospital, I chose to take the discharge, though I probably should have stayed. Currently, I'm able to sip liquids but I'm not getting even close to the suggested 4oz an hour. I notice that after I sip, I have brief stomach pain. I assume that I'm probably going to have it for at least a week, which is okay I guess. It's only a brief pain, then goes away. I was prescribed Tylenol 3 with codeine for pain and bought a pill crusher, which is a PITA, but it works okay. To date, I started my journey at 385lbs, I went to my surgery at 361lbs, and I stepped on the scale today and weighed in at 348lbs. It's hard for me to imagine that I lost 13lbs between Friday morning and Sunday, but maybe the lack of eating over the last 3-4 days and the stomach removal is what did it for me? I have no idea, but this has been an interesting journey and I'll looking forward to what comes next.

New here! I have my VSG July 10. I’m also on day 6 of the liver shrinking diet. Ugh. I want Mexican food so bad right now. Lol. Im excited yet really nervous for the day. I get in my head too much sometimes and freak myself out. I know I’ll be fine though. I have found that TikTok has some wonderful people on there to follow. Recipes, support, advice, etc. it has really helped a lot. I’ve told my family and a few friends. I feel like after surgery it will just be easier. I know lots of people know though. You know how word spreads. Hope you are doing well!!!!

The first 2 weeks are really challenging. By day 10 I was crying, some fluids started to repulse me, nausea returned and I just wanted to start eating again. Just be strong and know it's a tiny part of this journey. Try not to sneak food in this time, your tummy is undergoing major healing. Big hugs!
  22. I’m on day 6 of my liver shrinking diet. I actually thought it would be a lot harder. I’m just bored of my selection of food. I do 2 protein shakes a day and one meal. Usually 5 oz of lean meat (chicken, shrimp, salmon) and a cup of veggies. No butter. I did make a home made cabbage and other veggie soup to “snack” on here and there and count that as my veggies. I’m just getting really bored of the food. Anyone have any suggestions or meals to make it a bit more bearable? I have 2 more weeks. Surgery date is July 10.

Thanks, I just walked 10 laps around the floor and it was okay. Chest pain didn’t subside, so they gave me some pain meds. Hopeful to get out of here no later than Sunday. My surgeon used staples, is that common? I was expecting dissolving stitches and glue, lol.
