    Shame

I didn't feel shame but I think it's only because I had gotten to the point in my life that I was desperate for any type of real help. That was back in 2009. I got the lap band, and that helped tremendously for many years despite it being finicky. After that surgery, it gave me the hope and willpower I needed as far as weight was concern. Within 6 months, that feeling of hopelessness and hitting my rock bottom disappeared. When I was told that I should have a revision to sleeve, I saw it as an extension of that help that I know I will continually need to be successful to stay healthy.
  2. Im in a similar situation. I have not had surgery yet, as i will have my 2nd consult soon. I have gerd, have had it for years and when the surgeon and I discussed it he said, " well if you get reflux you always can convert to bypass". I was,a bit frustated with that comment and, I said, "No, at 58 years old im only doing this once". He said 1/3 of sleeve patients will still have gerd, and he has been seeing sleeve patients 3 to 4 years out with severe gerd and going the revision route because its very bad and happens daily. Thats why I decided the bypass route. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App 4 years sleeve post op. Had slight heartburn before my sleeve but nothing like this....I had an upper g.i. on Tuesday to find out the Fluid comes right back up and my sleeve has a slight twist in it I had a miscarriage last year and my gerd is now out of control. Submitting for bypass revision Nov 19th. I hope u feel better. I've taken allllll the medicines possible. I even went with natural remedies. Baking soda and apple cider vinegar to help. But it's useless. Im looking forward to relief and losing the last bit I have to hit goal. I still do not regret my sleeve !!!!! Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App

    Normal hospital stay?

I had my band removed and revised to a sleeve done at the same time. I went home the same day at 4 pm. I had an easy recovery. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

  5. Okay so this is going to be a long one so my apologies in advance. I just need help and someone who understand somewhat what I'm going threw. I am 2 years 2 months and 4 days post RNY gastric bypass. I started this journey almost 3 years ago. I chose to take more time then you had to going to the dietitian to make sure 1 I couldn't do this with out the surgery and 2nd to make sure I was 100% ready and prepared for the long road ahead of me. My heaviest I was over 300lbs I stopped weighing myself when I got to 300 ???? at surgery I weighed 269 lbs and I am just over 5'5.5 in height. I had my surgery in Seattle Wa. At a hospital known for weight lost surgery and with a Dr. That has been doing this for years. The surgery for what we knew went well till the next day as they where telling me to get ready to go home just 24 hours post surgery I just had to pee first. I was so excited to be able to go home and be in my own bed but as I went to the bathroom (without help) to try and pee I started to feel as if something was wrong. I pulled the card I could tell I was gonna pass out. The following thing I know my husband walks in and finds me passed out and blood everywhere. Said it looked like a murder scene. From the time I went into the bathroom from the time my hubs got there 30 mins had passed and still no Nurse had responded to the pulled cord not pushed button but pulled cord. Finally my husband starts yelling for help and they come running. As it turns out I had a internal GI bleed that was being digested and going threw my tract and flowing out my rectum. I bleed out into my gut. I was transfered to the ICU for a week while I healed and got better. So you would think that was the worst of it right.... But nope I had issues with being able to even swallow liquids. They the nurses and Dr. Kept telling me it will pass it will pass finally after about 4 months they started doing tests and they found out I had a huge ulcer. So they say that's the issue take these meds. My question was why did I have a ulcer I don't ever or have ever taken any aspirin or ibuprofen. No answer. So I take the meds and still pain nausea and unable to eat. So I finally go see my PCP and he takes 1 look at my labs and say its your gallbladder if they are not willing to take it out I will send you someplace else. So I tell my bariatric surgeon this and they act immediately and run the test well turns out my Gallbladder was only working a 2% to be able to take it out you have to be under 32% so I have the surgery in April of 2015 to remove my Gallbladder. After I heal from this I still have severe abdominal pain nausea and do not tolerate anything! I was hospitalized a few times for malnutrition and other issues with my nutrition and blood levels and the bariatric Dr I had the nurse finally told me you just need to eat more... I have been telling them I CAN NOT EAT!!! I also at this point have been going into the infusion clinic to get IV liquids and nutrition. But there answer to the issue was to eat more. Finally after my PCP seeing the issues I've had loosing my hair and not able to even walk I was dying slowly dying refers me to another Bariatric Dr. At this point in have gone 1 year and 4 months and no joke 15 mins into my appointment with the new Dr. He does a simple test and finds out I 1 have a stricture and 2nd I have a candy cane deformity so he immediately schedules me for my 1st revision on my bypass to dilate the stricture and remove the candy cane. So things where going better after I heal from that surgery but still have some pain and lots of nausea so I go another 7 months with having issues and finally go back to my new bariatric Dr. He finds a kink lower down in the first new curve of my small bowel. So 1 year and 11 months after my original bypass surgery and 7 after my 1st revision surgery I'm back in to have another revision and the hope is that this will be the end. After this surgery I will be out of pain and can finally eat. Well I healed fairly fast with this last surgery and I can eat drink per and poo all on my own and I couldn't be happier there I am finally able to start living life 2 years later but I seem to not to be able to stop loosing weight. I have lost all my fat at this point and they say I am now loosing muscle. I weigh as of today 118lbs and they say 20 lbs of that is extra skin. I eat what I'm suppose to even more to try and gain weight but nothing I will stay at the same weight for about a month then loose anywhere from 2-5 lbs I am at a loss I don't know what to do anymore and my husband is also he says its so hard to watch the love of your life slowly die and there is nothing you can do about it but just watch them waist away. This broke my heart. This is affecting everyone around me not just me. We also have 3 kids my daughter who is only 17 years old has kinda had to take over the house and my twin 15 year old boys are just hanging in there asking when will I get better. When will they get there mom back. I just do t know what to do anymore. I knew there was a possibility of complications but my original surgeon said it was less then 1% of people have any at all. Well it seems as if I have gotten to short stick and have gotten every one except death but honestly how much longer till then if I can't stop loosing weight now even tho I eat and eat and eat. Please help has anyone been threw anything like this or has advice on how to help would be appreciated. Thanks so much for listening well reading my long post but mostly my long road of heartache Sent from my LGLS992 using the BariatricPal App
  6. Had my band for 6 years. It's not working for me anymore. I've gained all my weight back. Fluoroscope images look good. Waiting to do an EGD to see what things look like from inside. Hoping for something to show so I can get approval to revise. So tired of being 100 lbs overweight Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. I was told just the opposite. I had the sleeve in 2013 and rny was not an option by this particular surgeon. After going through the sleeve I had gerd so bad never had it before the sleeve. My sleeve failed and I went to a new Dr, was going to have a revision done to it but once the new Dr explained that a sleeve only guarantees you to lose 60-90 pounds and rny is for 90 and over, I chose to revision to an rny. I had my rny 2 weeks ago and it's been great so far. Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App I have read about many people losing a lot of weight with the sleeve, way more than 90 lbs. Just signed concent form on Thursday. Surgeon said I'll get a call at the end of this week or next week to give me the surgery date and time and pre op appt. 8. My surgeon said the sleeve is easier and faster. I would listen to surgeon #1, wouldnt you hate to have a revision to rny if you ended up with gerd after the sleeve. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App
  9. No actual books. Countless articles and took a 12 week course, every Friday for an hour and a half. I was pretty set on sleeve but this surgeon, as he was examining my meeical record he looks at me and says "oh yeah, we're doing the roux en y".. "we'll go over it in a bit". He seems to insist the rny will cure my GERD and the sleeve will make it worse. I ended up reluctantly agreeing to the rny so he put "roux en y possible sleeve gastrectomy" on the concent form we submitted. He did say that if I insist on sleeve that he will order a GI x-ray to look for a hernia. Said he didn't want to do the sleeve cause he'll just have to go back in and do the rny when the acid gets worse. Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App Yes that is true. My surgeon said, that 1/3 of sleeve patients will have gerd after the sleeve procedure. What he said he is seeing more and more is 3 to 4 years out from the sleeve, people are getting horrible gerd daily and end up getting a revision to the sleeve. Hope that is helpful. 10. I had my LapBand removed and revised to sleeve on 10/18/16. Wish I had done it sooner. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  12. I've heard good things about dr. Gagner. I went with dr. Christou for my band to bypass revision. I think dr. Gagner was a former student of dr. Christou so he had good things to say. I went with dr. Christou because he seemed most experienced with revisions (more than 250). Not a lot of doctors in Canada have much revision experience.

  14. So let's see... I'm about 5 weeks and a couple of days from revision. Definitely harder than the sleeve but can't really pinpoint what. It seems that I was further along with the sleeve, meaning eating more of a variety. This time around protein is hard to get in and hurts! I keep trying...chew really soft chicken but just a bite can cause pain, so lots and lots of soup. Mainly miso, lentil, bean and vegetable. So bored with it. I did slip and take a bite of my hubbys PB&J sandwich and unfortunately it was delicious and went down easily... I don't, at least it doesn't seem like it, the dumping for sweets. :/ had a teaspoon of honey as I was dying to get another flavor into me, no issues. I'm down about 18 - 20 lbs, and just started back with yoga. Pain from surgery completely gone except when I have that one bite too much. Still fighting head hunger...maybe forever...

    Exercise regimen before surgery

I am scheduled for a sleeve revision from the band December 16th. Yay! My question is, will it be easier for me to start an exercise plan before my surgery or will it not matter because I cant exercise for a while after anyways.....yes I know all exercise is healthy, but what can you still even do post op....and when? 16. I'm a lap band to bypass revision. I studied sleeve versus bypass and I prefer the malabsorption, the sleeve looked to me to have too large a pouch and I need the restrictions the bypass offers. Good luck on your upcoming surgery. Sent from my SM-G550T1 using the BariatricPal App
  17. I'm from Huntsville, AL. I had Gastric Bypass just over 5 years ago. I have lost 110 lbs. since my first Dr. visit. Not having many problems as long as I don't eat to fast or to much. I was your typical obese person, had diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. I am no longer on any meds for any of these problems. This procedure probably saved my life. It at lest extended it. I am ever so thankful to Dr. Mailapur for this tool. I was unfortunate enough to develop gastro/gastric fistulas 3 years after surgery. This required a very extensive and long surgery to correct. It required a complete revision of my bypass and removal of the remnant portion of my stomach. I had an ulcer caused when an orthopedic surgeon placed me on aspirin as a blood thinner after having hip replacement. He did not tell me that he used aspirin for this. Had a great gastroenterologist that treated the ulcer and things are now much better. I would not trade having bypass for anything. We have a fantastic support group here that is sponsored by our local hospital. It is staffed with a terrific nurse administrator and dietician.

    I'm thinking about a revision...

Have you had a pouch test to see if everything is in tact? Also, good to have a good physical as there are many things that can cause tiredness and weight imbalance... low vit D, thyroid as you said and done drs dobt follow the updated values on what is considered hypothyroidism, anemia, autoimmune diseases, Cushing's syndrome, pcos, and more I do think going back to the basics for more then a week might be. Good idea especially if you do have anoyhet unknown issue in the way. You can document everything so you have evidence to show the insurance and new doctor that you tried everything and here are the results Maybe you do need a revision but if you have a primary thyroid condition, a revision is not likely to fix it help much...your body needs repair first with meds, than WLS can be considered. I have bipolar, and lithium has given me hypothyroidism but after a couple years on thyroid meds, it's better. I was just sleeved and I have pcos too and I notice my weight is slow to move off despite following the rules. Still tweaking things though... I have to get steroids from time to time and that makes me voraciously hungry, pack on lbs and store fat for the winter lol but I'm still loosing with the surgery just not as fast as my counterparts it seems.... So, having thyroid issues should not make you gain huge amounts and loose nothing with the sleeve in place unless something is wrong with the sleeve and it happens even though not often I have to be very strict about my meals bc I dobt lose as fast so maybe you need a diet reset for longer, document every crumb for yourself, the NUt, surgeon old or new and insurance. Also suggest getting a good exam..maybe you need a new gp!! Good fortune

    Gastric sleeve and heartburn

My new surgeon says I have Twisted sleeve slightly up top and massive heartburn. Upper g.i. Showed my sleeve to be very large and Fluid coming back up but luckily not all the way into the esophagus. Mental.eval on the 17th then submitting for approval for revision vsg to bypass. Nervous but ready to be our of this pain !!! Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App
  20. I also had sleeve to bypass revision surgery on 10/28. I was very nervous before surgery remembering the pain from the sleeve surgery. With the sleeve I had a terrible time getting in my liquids the first several days. With the bypass I had no trouble getting in liquids even on the day of surgery. In fact I was worried the surgery was not successful since I could drink so easily. At my post-op appointment this past week the PA told me it was fine and I could drink all the liquids (Water and crystal light type drinks) that I want. Let's keep in touch!!
  21. @@sheetmetalgirl, I agree with @@Dairymary, maybe go back to the basics first and check to see if you have PCOS or insulin resistance. Also, check your insurance company to see if you ate a candidate for a revision. I don't know much about revisions...
  22. Unfortunately you have to follow the food "rules" forever, not just the first 1 - 1 1/2 years....even with a revision. Have you tried going back to basics? How much Protein, carbs, calories and fluids are you getting? How are these numbers different than when you were losing? You sound pretty active and that can only help. If you feel you were not losing weight, despite eating high protein/low carb and getting 100+ ounces of Water and taking all your supplements, have you been checked for metabolic or hormone related illnesses?
  23. I had a vsg in June of 2013. Prior to surgery, I lost just over 40 pounds (over about a 6-7 month period) and lost about 40 pounds within the 4 months post-op. At that point, I had my gallbladder removed and then it took about a year to lose another 10 pounds or so. My lowest was about 50-55 pounds from surgery weight and around 90 from my highest. Over the past year-year 1/2, I have gained back about 40 of the 50-55 lost since surgery. (But I am 2 sizes smaller than I was at this same weight before, I'm guessing from the muscle mass change) Looking back, I think it's odd (and a bit unsettling) that my surgeon talked to me about revisions the day I had my initial consultation for the sleeve (it was also pushed VERY hard for me to go with a lap band).I find this so unsettling because I realize now that he knew at the time my insurance will pay for revisions. I knew nothing about them then, and still know very little. I never ever not even once have got sick after eating. I also have always found this odd, because I don't really know of other people who never experienced that- not even one time. I followed the food "rules" fairly strict for about a year- year 1/2 post op, but admittedly have slid off of that wagon over time. I started doing half marathons (I am a mostly walker, but some walk running usually for the second half of those) last year and have done 6 of them this year along with the prep for that and various other exercise. Anyway, I have been thinking about this for quite a while and finally decided to try to see another doctor because I really have not so great vibes from my original surgeon. I am seriously considering a revision, but it has been hard to come to this place mentally where I have accepted that it just didn't work out for me like I thought it would. I don't regret it at all, and have made some serious life changes that have stuck all this time. I'm looking to see if there are others in this group who have been where I am right now for support and possibly advice. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Happy today

The smile on my face is because I was able to wear the new size Large tops that I bought at Kohls this week. I had some kohls cash to use and figured that I would buy some warmer tops since its that time of year. Imagine my surprise when I tried one on and it fit!!! Revised from LapBand to sleeve on 10/18. Normal?

I'm about 6-7 weeks post op and feel normal now. I'm lucky though as I've never gotten nauseous. I went out for Japanese for Lunch and have a Mexican themed dinner party to go to tonight. I just look for things on plan. So for lunch I had salmon poke which was basically salmon with avocado in a citrus dressing. It was an appetizer so perfectly portioned for me. I'm at 1/2-3/4 cups of food now. But that is proababy more than most. I had a band to bypass revision. So bigger pouch. From what I understand most people end up with about a 1 cup capacity
