  1. I was sleeved Feb. 19, and surgery went well. However, since then, it's been one thing after another. I was home for 5 days, wound up with gout in both feet and ankles....5 more days in the hospital. Eating and drinking still going ok at this point, and weight coming off. Got home for 3 weeks, went back to work for one week, gallbladder decided to act up, wound up back in hospital for removal and developed sepsis (blood infection). Back home after a week, still off work, and I can't get down, or keep down proteins. I can eat Popsicles, frozen yogurt (sometimes), water is difficult to get down, and I don't know what to do. Saw surgeon and he scoped me and straightened out a kink in my stomach, but things are not a whole lot better. I'm weak and discouraged! Is anyone else having these problems? How do I handle them? I'm scared to death to get dehydrated again, but I know I'm only getting less than 5 grams of protein or so in a day, and that doesn't always stay down. Suggestions??
  2. To Maagie517: Try taking a probiotic supplement as well as yogurt to replenish your good bacteria. Also, maybe you should call your PC Dr and see if they can give you something to calm your nausea. Your stomach and intestines might be inflamed and irritated. I hope you feel better soon. We all want to lose weight but it's important to try to maintain our wellbeing in the process. I do think that surgery in general weakens the immune system and since one's digestive track is an integral part of the immune system the VSG surgery may make us more susceptible and slower to recover. Plus, try a little chicken noodle soup. ???? pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4
  3. I developed an adversion to eggs since I had to puree everything. I made a packet of tuna fish, plain greek yogurt, and hot pickles and blended it and then I froze them in ice cube tray and they are ready to eat sizes. Also I have done soups. Those work the same way. Also I have eaten a lotnof yogurt, cottage cheese and used to eggs lol Good luck

    Marchies In April

Janine, I also just started on regular foods. I try and eat things with lots of protein and it keeps me full for a really long time. Today I got a small Wendy's chili with cheese and onion and OMG it was SO good and filled me up for about 4 hours. Maybe if you went with more beans, cottage cheese and skim plus milk, which has extra protein, it might help your hunger cravings. One thing that has helped me in the morning are the 42g protein test tubes. I've never been a big breakfast eater, so on my nightstand i keep one of those protein test tubes and before I even stand up I drink half of it. This gives me about 90 calories and 21 grams of protein right off the bat. While I'm getting ready for work I try to drink 16oz of water and then I grab a yogurt of a smoothie on my way out the door. Dannon light n fit strawberry smoothies are great and are only 60 calories. For lunch I'll usually have one of those soup at hands and an applesauce. For dinner a lean cuisine meal. For a snack a sugar free pudding cup and then the rest of that protein test tube. It really seems like all I do is eat or drink. I love the pre-measured stuff because then I really can't overeat. What do you typically eat in one day? Virginia

    B'ham Banding

Hi, I was banded in Birmingham too, not by Dr. Dewitt tho, Dr. Miles at St. Vincents East did mine 1 week and a day ago. I was so happy to be able to eat some yogurt, ya know something not just broth.. it is the worst.. lol Anyway hope everyone is doing good. I don't get a fill until Dec 16 but I am looking forward to that.

Just a thought, could you take Kosher meat to work with you? As for eggnog, take a protein shake in a thermos and when the egg nog comes out bring out the shake. As I understand it, carbs turn to sugar and sugar starts the engine, protein is the long burning fuel. Hard protein stays in the pouch longer thus the feeling of full. Until you can get professional help, try outsmarting yourself. For instance, I found my weak spot is the 3:00 afternoon break so at noon I have a protein shake along with 4 oz of shrimp. At the 3:00 break,I have tea with yogurt which keeps me until dinnertime. I haven't controlled the issues I have with chewing or grazing when alone, but I am the most successful when I try to outsmart myself. Take care

I am so lost and overwhelmed!

For now, it's a little tough. You still have swelling from the surgery which makes you tight, hard to take much in and it's maybe even harder still to continue to be satisfied by liquids since they don't stay in your pouch for long. I was on true liquids for 10 days and couldn't even have the soup or yogurt for 10 very long days. That first can of cream of mushroom soup was like getting a steak it tasted and felt so good, LOL. Just remind yourself that this is a very short term and it's just going to get better.

    May Bandsters!

I've been on several diets over the years where I've had to drink whey Protein mixes. Unjury is BY FAR the best I've ever had! It's delicious! I mix it with 8 oz. of skim milk. I ordered some strawberry Sorbet too but haven't tried that yet. One of the nurses said that she mixes the strawberry sorbet into her Greek yogurt and she loves it. But you can mix it with Crystal Light or whatever and get your protein in.

    May Bandsters!

Ok I was starting to question myself, but it seems like a lot of people progressed to soft foods around the same time, if not quicker than me, lol. Such a variety. I was just thinking the same thing. The conflicting info can be confusing. The best thing is to follow our individual doctors instructions of course. I'm glad it wasn't just me that had an issue w/ beans. I don't think I'll try them again for a while. How do you know you're full? I always used to eat to the point of being stuffed, lol, so this is new to me! But when I feel some pressure in my chest or side I stop. I got an example meal plan from my Dr and I actually can't even eat that much yet. For Breakfast it said 1/2 cup yogurt and 1/4 cup smashed banana.. I couldn't even finish the yogurt before I felt stuffed.

    December Bandsters 2009

Hi, everybody hope the Holidays were good and you did not gain a lot of weight...... So I've lost about 40 pounds since I started this journey. Got banded Dec 2nd. Far better experience than expected; no a lot of pain only took 1 days worth of pain meds. Only gained about 3 pounds during Christmas. Found out that pork is not my friend anymore but coffee is good (Thank God) Cottage cheese is good high protein low fat with sugar free jams is better and a good alternative to yogurt. Chili is good. Muscle milk is very good, no fat or sugar and about 25 g of protein. Tofu is good. If you have any tips please let me know

    Frozen Yogurt Six days out?

Omg I need some popcorn now..I get a huge laugh everyday at the food nazis.. I ate sugar free gummy bears last night..I sh1t my brains out and my stomach cramped bad! I self paid so I guess it was a 25k sh1t. I definitely want a freaking refund!!!! I won't be making that mistake again P.S. eat the yogurt or don't..it doesn't matter. What matters is you hold yourself accountable for your choices, which from what I can tell is you would have.
  12. Wow! Thanks for the attack! Actual I was being serious. And yes, I did pay for my surgery (not that that should be a factor in any case. This surgery is the same regardless). Perhaps I should have been more specific in starting sugar free frozen yogurt OR sorbet. I am not at the point where I can have Greek yogurt yet, otherwise I would help myself to some of that. I realize that frozen yogurt doesn't have "nutritional value" but at this point in the game, I'm not getting much nutritional values from anything that I'm taking in (besides my protein shake).

  16. Hi, I am 6 weeks post op and I am unsure on whether I am getting enough calories on a daily basis. I usually have: meal #1 - 1 cup of oatmeal, 120 cal meal #2 - 6oz. yoplait light yogurt, 90 cal meal #3 - 4oz. del monte peaches, 60 cal meal #4 - 1/3 cup deli sliced turnkey, 150 cal meal #5 - 4oz. filet of salmon, 150 cal under 600 calories on a heavy eating day. All liquids are Water, I am not doing any Protein drinks at this time. (is this my answer?) I am at that stage where I can start exercising again and the last thing I want to do is pass out in the gym. Thoughts? Suggestions? misspelled calories, that's embarrassing!
  17. I love love love pureed cauliflower, with plain greek yogurt mixed in and shredded cheese (& garlic and chopped onion and crumbled bacon) I made the best loaded baked cauliflower ever, and it saved me during those days. Tastes just like loaded baked potato!! If you can't have the bacon, just pick it out. But it flavors the cauliflower very well!! You can google the recipe, it's a pretty popular recipe.

    I’m so weak and tired

Try the protein shake thinned out with milk. I only tolerated it ice cold initially. Maybe just try Fairlife milk and see if that is tolerable and work up to the shakes? What about soups? I was allowed low fat cream of chicken, mushroom etc. but I had to strain the pieces out. Maybe try that. I would only do 2 tablespoons, wait an hour, try 2 more etc. Otherwise maybe low sugar yogurt, it can be flavored but not chunks of fruit.

    Any February 2014 Sleevers?

Guess what?!?! Able to eat 1/2 container of Greek yogurt. I feel accomplished. I'm just waiting to get my cue to run to the restroom. Lol My insurance would cover my lovanox blood thinner injections and my zofran but not my liquid lortab. They wanted me to pay $75 for that. Bs! If I wanted the tablets it would be covered. But I can't take the tablets. And do I hope I am past the point of significant pain.

    Any February 2014 Sleevers?

I got a strainer to strain out the pieces in soups. Since everything tastes so nasty I was very happy that the yogurt wasn't too nasty like jello, Popsicles and sf drink mixers are.

    NYE 2019 surgery date twin?

Have you tried Genepro? It's unflavored and doesn't change the texture of the food. I literally have been putting it in everything but my water. Herbal tea, pudding, soup, yogurt, etc. I have really big issues with food textures and it's been great. I agree that I can't handle the taste of any of the other protein drinks. They make me want to gag. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    November 2020 sleevers

I know there seems to be a lot of controversy about the brand, but it was what my nutritionist recommended... I got a sample (on my own) pre-surgery, and it was great as far as not being able to taste it, so... I use Genepro. Pre-surgery, I tried it in some yogurt, and in just plain water. Couldn't detect it in the yogurt at all, and could only marginally in the water (it might be undetectable if I added some Mio or something...) The Premier Protein is just all gross to me now, though I still slog through because I don't want to waste the ones I have.

    November 2020 sleevers

I'm home now and doing great! Still doing fine with my liquids. Sometimes I get a mild discomfort probably because I forget to sip instead of gulping it down like a horse. I'm on phase 1 of postop restrictions...two weeks doing 1- 2 ounce liquids every fifteen minutes with the goal of getting to 64 oz of liquid in the day. I'm allowed my protein shakes, broths, diluted apple and grape juice, crystal light, decaf coffee and tea and some other drinks. My surgeon also allows for watery yogurt and apple sauce. I'm also on 4 medications. One (muscle spams) I'm suppose to take for 2 weeks, second one (stomach acid blocker) is suppose to go for 4 weeks. The other two is an as needed basis since they help with pain and nausea. Fortunately, I didn't need the pain or nausea medications yet. Crossing my fingers it continues this way. I am not hungry, but do feel mental desires. However, while going through the pharmacy nothing made my mouth water or ache to have it. When I got home and saw the food I normally eat, I did have a moment of " I wish I could eat that" but I overcame it very quickly. I don't have a choice, but to keep going forward and there's no turning back which I'm quite happy with. Besides in time, we'll be able to eat again just smaller portions. I'm moving about, but I have to remind myself that a few days ago I had surgery. My body has so far handled it well.

Post SADI help <3 Save me from the farts

Hi and welcome to post SADi Life. I had it in Nov 2014 and understand where you're coming from. Before you stress over the list below, I eat all of the items on the list, and some are daily must eat for me. The gas for many SADi and Hess DS patients is triggered by: 1) Dairy (cheeses, milk, sauces with cream), 2) Onions, 3) Sorbitol and certain sugar substitutes but not all, 4) Some Fiber 5) Fruits like grapes. 6) Anything Carbonated. Strategy => after your morning major bowel movement which should happen if you have a good nights sleep, you won't have any gas. Morning => Start every morning eating healthy (Banana, Chobanni Greek Yogurt, eggs, oatmeal). Fruit (no grapes but any berries, mandarins, peaches, oranges, etc., and chocolate during the morning. Lunch => Sandwich, chocolate, fruit (but no grapes), and min trigger foods, so no gas likely Dinner and later => Anything you want which may cause gas but less concern at night. I eat Ice Cream, cheeses and chocolate every day.
