  1. Congrats on your darling son! The breastfeeding will really help with the weight loss. I think I got down as low as 240 when I was nursing (got pregnant at about 250 and I think I was around 280 when he was born- all the weight gained in the last 1.5 months!). My body is way different since I had a baby. I'm about 217 today and at 217 pre-baby I was not as thick through the middle as I am now. From about an inch above my belly button to about 3 inches below is just thicker around, darn it! I also have a lovely flab roll hanging over my c-section scar... so not pretty! Nor are all my stretch marks but I wouldn't trade them for my son!

    Gapapentin and the sleeve

I'm on it also for nerve pain in my leg and foot. I take it 3 times a day and even then I still have issues with nerve pain in my foot only. I had no idea that it could cause weight gain. I'm 6 months out and have lost 71lbs.

    Newbie!

Polycystic ovarian syndrome causes weight gain, needing steroids for asthma as well. I have been on and off steroid medication for my asthma for 26 years. I'm now 30... I've had tests done and my thyroid came back negative.
  4. On a scale from 1-10, how difficult are the lifestyle changes after acclimation? I think about all the time, effort and self-hate that goes into my day now (what foods I should eat, which I shouldn't, am I really hungry or just emotionally hungry?, exercise, weight gain, guilt, etc). I know it will be a lot of work post-op but I hope the self-hate and constant disappointment subside, at least a little.
  5. I am almost 2 weeks post op & still on a liquid diet. I only have 2 more days left before I introduce mushies, but just within the past few days my weight has gone up! I don't understand how if I'm only having liquids I could be gaining. Did this happen to anyone else? It's freaking me out a bit that I am one if those statistics that the band is not going to work for. I'm following Dr orders, I'm walking every day, & I'm drinking my water. The only thing I can think the cause is that I'm not getting enough calories. I'm getting at the least 500 a day which was considered acceptable from my Dr at this stage. I need encouragement :-(
  6. hey everyone.... i'm lost.. i have no idea what to do... 3 months after my surgery.. 6/9mils fill.. and guess what.. WEIGHT GAIN.. not once single pound lost.. i'm beside myself.. so so mad.. so upset.. i just don't know what to do.. my dietician sais its my hormones (PCOS) but wtf is someone meant to do, there cannot be NO answer for ppl with Pcos.. they can't be expected to stay fat their whole life.. my depression is getting so bad i'm comfort eating again... and considering my surgeon knows nothing about PCOS i'm running an uphill batttle.. i have f*ckall restriction.. (i only have 3 mils left to go in my band, he will only do one mil at a time) so therefore these binging encounters mean i can eat heapsss.. its ridiculous the amounts i can eat!! i' feel like im going to do something stupid.. i just don't know what else to do.. this was my last option.. and if i can't lose weight and be a happier healthier person.. i don't want to be at all...

    Pre-Op Confusion

So, on day OF surgery it STILL could get cancelled? This is crazy! I guess I can enjoy eating for another month, lol. I have never in my life purposely tried to GAIN weight, but I guess I better to be safe. This makes NO sense. Isn't the whole purpose to LOSE weight? Thinking back though... I think they told me that I can't show a weight gain either.
  8. Hello Everyone.... I am not new here...I have actually been banded since May 5, 2005. I am struggling and need to get myself back on tract soooo here I am. I actually was very very very close to meeting my goal. Then, I got pregnant. I had my beautiful baby girl in December 2009~ and have not dropped the weight I gained with her. I was diabetic during my pregnancy so I think that sorta contributed to my weight gain...but I also fell off the radar and didnt do much in regard to keep my weight down.. I got all the Fluid removed from my band in the beginning of the pregnancy...and I didnt follow up with my LapBand doctor. I screwed up....ALOT..... BUT I am here now and I am recommiting to do this. I have set certain goals for myself and I am going back on the plan and I hope that within 6 weeks, by March 4th I would like to drop atleast 16 pounds. I am very much considering bypass surgery.....but.... I want to know I have done everything I can do with this LapBand before going through yet another surgery. As it stands right now, I am at 260 pounds, 5 foot 4 inches tall. When I got banded back in 2005 I weighed in at 289...... At my lowest weight during the last almost seven years, I was at 168 pounds~!~!~!~ I am an emotional wreck over this weight loss challange.... I recently also lost my father who was my biggest supporter in getting banded in the first place.....at this point....I am clawing my way back up, or down the weight loss ladder..... and I hope to reconnect with some old friends I made here...along with make some new ones..... Thanks for reading....and I will talk to you soon~!~ Ciao
  9. Couldn't have said it better myself! I'm 30 years old and I'm 2 weeks post op. I have been over weight since the age of 8 and have gone through all the cycles of losing gaining etc. My health started to take a turn gor the worst about 10 years ago when i was diagnosed with PCOS and honestly my 20's were a whirlwind of health issues and weight gain. But i have never hated myself because of my weight nor have i blamed my weight for what happened to me in life good or bad. The one thing i do recognize is that alot of my health issues were related to my obesity. Like my diabetes for example. I was diagnosed last year and was an insulin dependent diabetic (haven't had to use insulin since the pre op diet phase ) but again i have a girlfriend who didn't have health issues except being over weight and got the surgery done because she expected her whole life to change once she lost the weight she expected her husband to come back and everything to be just peachy. Well she has lost the weight and looks amazing but her husband didn't come back, her job didn't get any better, and honestly isn't even enjoying the attention she is getting from other men because they only want to sleep with her or use her. So is losing weight which ever way ypu accomplish it the answer to all your problems no it is not! I have been married for 7 years and have had peaks and valleys like most marriages I'm happy right now because my husband who is not overweight never has been, has been very supportive through this process just like all my other health issues I've gone through. My husband has never put me down verbally about my weight or anything else that's just how he is. Have i joked that I'm gonna leave him once the weight comes off, yes i have but i noticed about the 3rd time I said it (Which i wouldn't because I love him and habe no desire to be with anyone else) that he did kind of believe it and he seemed hurt so i will no longer joke about that. I guess I'm lucky that my weight has never been an issue in our marriage at least that he has ever ever showed me. We have been together for 12 Years and married for 7. I'm hoping this journey only brings us closer. But again who knows how he might feel or see me once the weight is off. Best of luck to all of us taking this courageous journey and best wishes to all your marriages.

    Assumptions

Like @Frustr8 said, lots of people assume I got so big because I'm lazy or something along those lines. I have health issues that have put me at a disadvantage. Previous meds largely contributed to my weight gain. Hopefully now I have the advantage back in my corner and can finally beat this beast.
  11. It's been 2 weeks since my last update. The first week, I was on liquids and the second week soft foods. The two drain tubes were pulled leaving only the feeding tube and G-tube into the stomach. Both have been capped off and only left in as a precaution. Today, I have an appointment to remove these remaining tubes. I am also supposed to get the go ahead for solid foods. I think it will still be months before the wounds stop leaking completely and close up/heal. The only scare I had was after 7 days of liquids and 2 days of soft foods, I gained 18 pounds!!! Who gains 18 # in 9 days?!!!! I panicked and paged the doctor. He explained that this was a reaction to my body from being in "starvation mode" for several weeks. Previously, I was only able to get in 600 calories each day. I wasn't so concerned about the weight gain as I was about whether or not food or liquids were still leaking out of my stomach. The doctor said that if that was the case, I would be violently sick. Fortunately, I am still healthy with no fevers. He said my metabolism should stabilize. I think it has because I dropped 4 pounds already. Apparently, there is a ton of politics in my doctor's office. My doctor left the business (with no notice) and moved to the opposite side of town. I sought him out so he could remove these final tubes. My follow-up care will be at the Mayo Clinic. Hopefully, there won't be any further complications.
  12. i had a complete hysterectomy in october and having been struggling with losing, more like lack of losing, since then. more so then before to say the least. i am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. my doc says its normal, but i wanna hear experiences from other bansters. i am really freaking out about it. i am on a replacement hormone, estradial (sp?). when having the hysterectomy, i figured i would gain some, but not like this. and i didnt think it would be so hard to lose. i have gained 15 lbs since surgery. its killing me.
  13. I am going to get banded on April 21st; however, the ENT put me on Prednisone for 10 days due to chronic sinus infection. Will I gain weight using the steroids for 10 days? Thanks,
  14. I was watching a program on PBS called "Depression: Out of the Shadows". Anywho, as one who has struggled with anxiety/depression and obesity for many years I have also struggled with the fact that having anxiety and depression contribute to my weight gain and vise versa and also the drugs that I take may also play a part in my weight issues. Back to the PBS show, there was a man on the show who had been profoundly depressed for a while and took a large cocktail of drugs that seemed to be working for him. He also took some medications that were to counteract some of the side effects of these drugs. He took a drug that I wasn't familiar with to counteract the weight gain side effect. Actually I'm going to try to go to the transcript of the show to see if I can find it but it was almost inaudible to me while watching. I then did a little research on the web myself and came across a drug called "zonisamide or zonegran". Has anyone ever heard of this before or have you been on them for this reason or anyone on a similar type of drug to counteract the weight gain side effects? I know there are certain antidepressants that specifically say they don't affect a person's weight but those are either drugs that haven't worked for me or not found to be true especially with the combination I take. And Wellbutrin has no affect on me whatsoever, just as an example. Thanks ahead of time anyone who has any info and would like to share, brandyII.:rolleyes2:

    Weight Gain

Sure, but it was ultimately his poor diet that caused the weight gain, not being hungry. He admitted to a poor diet. I don't often drink with meals because there just isn't room, but if I'm extremely thirsty, I will. I also have fountain diet coke sometimes now. It doesn't cause me to be hungry. IT just satisfies my desire.

    Weight Gain

I don't understand why drinking with meals and drinking diet soda caused your weight gain. It was more likely your poor diet, but gl with your journey.
  17. We have similar stats (not sure about your height though.. I’m 5’6 and have an 8 yr old. I have a hiatal hernia (related to weight gain) my surgery is scheduled for the 24th though.. so you’ll be way ahead of me! :) That’s around the corner too !! I’m excited for you

    5 years out...gaining weight

@Mindbodyandsoul Welcome! Weight gain can happen. No judgement. I have a friend who is about 5 years out and started regaining. She returned back to basics and joined weight watchers to keep herself accountable. Seems to be working. Best of luck!

    Target Calories?

I don't really count calories either with the exception of every 4th day I try to get more than 1500 on what I call my maintenance calorie days. A regular day is likely under 800 though based on rough math-- I count protien and my water intake an just try to limit carbs. I am testing a theory of 3 days on typical vsg food and one day increased calories to keep my metabolism up. Please note: this is not from a nutritionist or doc--I figured I would try it and see how it goes for a bit. I am out of town all week, so I have not been able to hit a scale. Clothes are getting very loose and the belt had needed to go in another notch this week. Granted, I cannot eat that much food on my high calorie days--so I suppliment with "Suplimed" a well balanced weight gain drink on day4. So far most food has just been like taking medicine--not hungry, but I know I need the nutrients.
  20. So when I decided to have a revision from sleeve to bypass, due to bad reflux and weight gain, my surgeon warned me that my weight loss results would be slower than if I had not had previous WLS. I defiantly felt like I lost more quickly with my initial surgery. I just wondered for those that are farther out from revision......... Did you reach your goal? How much of your excess weight did you lose 40% 50%, 60% or more of your estimated weight loss goal? Do you feel that your weight loss was slower than with your initial WLS? Did you weight loss slow dramatically after the first few month? How long did it take you to get to goal? I would love to hear any information or progress stories you revision veterans are willing to share. Thanks!

    I Miss You Coke!

I miss diet coke and diet dr pepper. But that was one of the bad habits I took up after my first RNY which could have lead to my weight gain. My surgeon says carbonation can stretch your pouch. I still crave the fizzy sweetness!!
  22. Hi everyone, I was originally banded back in Nov of 2012 only to wind up with an emergency removal & sleeve revision in Jan of 2013. I did great - lost about 105 - 110 pounds. But, as a result of a job loss, laid off 6 weeks ago, my bad habits came back. I "never" thought I would go back to munching on crappy food & over loading on carbs. The holidays are not the best time to be job hunting. The stress that comes with it is over whelming. It's hard being unemployed, spending HOURS & HOURS on my laptop applying for jobs that could be a match. I've gained about 10 pounds, and while it may not sound like a lot, that's how it starts. I "refuse" to go back to where I was (245 pds). I now weigh around 148 pds. I'm here to let everyone know that yes, you can gain weight after being sleeved. While you may not physically be able to eat as much, you can eat a little more than when you were first sleeved, and gain weight by eating all the wrong stuff. My point? It's time to refocus on why I lost the weight in the first place, and how being thinner made me feel. Time to go back to basics - 'do over.' Every day is a new opportunity to re-build my strength, and focus on what needs to be done to lose those horrible additional 10 pds that seem to be sitting on my stomach, and surely my butt :-). With this said, I'm trying to back track & remember what I did when I first started. I've become more lactose intolerant than what I originally was when I first started this journey, so I need to be careful what I eat. After giving so much support when I first started this journey, I am now looking for help & support. Trying to come up with healthy menus again. Goal is to eliminate those shitty carbs that made me do this in the first place. Appreciate any help you guys can offer! Depressed, but definitely trying to push through with positivity!! Thanks for listening!

    Up and Down...

Hi Connie - I gained 1kg/2.2lbs on the scales last week, but some how I'm fitting into some clothes that I couldn't before that. I'm wondering if it is muscle gain, as I have been walking and doing weights. Could this be your weight gain? I also find I put on about 2kgs or 4.4lbs of Fluid a few days before I'm due for my period, then it's gone the next week. Like MrsJingles said - Hang in there.. Amy

    Stress = weight loss

From what I remember, the cortisol that stress releases causes the body to do a little more "fight or flight" stuff. One of the fight or flight reactions is a shift in metabolism away from fat storage towards calorie burning; the rationale that I remember is that during times of stress we were more likely to need the energy boost RIGHT NOW than to save it for later. Of course, the interesting thing is that PROLONGED stress can lead to weight gain. I don't think that researchers fully understand that yet; it may be a homeostatic mechanism. Regardless of the physiological causes, it's very normal. Do some meditation or deep breathing exercises to lower your stress level, make sure you're treating your body right (good Vitamins, nutrition, hydration), and it should normalize.

    OMG....

They denied me because 1.During the 6 month weight management I gained weight and 2.They said it wasn't a medical necessity. I have arthritis, degenerative disc, bulging disc and lumbago in my lower back. So I went to my pcp and told her I was denied. So she gave me a copy of my mri and all my records and she also wrote a letter. Then I had been to another dr and I got my records from them as well. Then I went to my ob/gyn and got my records. I also have PCOS and weight gain is associated with that. And with my back im not able to exercise or anything. I havent worked since August. So with all that and God, they reversed the denial and approved it.
