  1. Hi! I've never had the band but I know that if you go to the menu and scroll down you will find a band to sleeve revision forum! There are a lot of people that have had it! Oh and I thought about getting the band but felt there was to many complications

    Third Revision...

I’m looking into the same thing as the OP. Band in 2010, revision to Sleeve in 2014 due to band slip resulting in the inability to even drink water, and now looking for another option due to acid reflux and regain after a hysterectomy in 2016. I never felt restriction with the sleeve and didn’t lose much after the sleeve and now am half way back to where I started on my WL journey. I’m going to call my WL surgeon to make an appointment to see what my options are at this point and to see what is needed for insurance to pay. If anyone else with a similar experience has any words of wisdom to share that would be greatly appreciated.

    Third Revision...

@Caela88 yes, i knew someone she had the lapband for a few years - erosion, then sleeve - heartburn - revision to RNY haven't seen her in quite awhile - hopefully all is well. i don't know how often this happens, but for the above reasons it's sad, but understandable is a 3rd revision in your future? hope all goes well whatever you do☺️ good luck kathy
  4. I revised from a band I got in 2008, it slipped in 2017, I got RNY in December 2020. With my band I had several issues, pain with eating, throwing up, not losing weight. my surgeon said she would only do RNY because it was safer due to the scaring from the band, so my choice was an easy one. I’m a female, 5’9” and I have hormonal issues that hinder me from losing weight. But, I started at 255 in December and am 207 today, so it’s still been effective, even if slower than I expected. The best part is, no pain while eating. I actually don’t feel much when eating. So, that old feeling of band “restriction” is totally out the window. You have to relearn your body’s hunger cues, but the essentials of how, what, how much to eat is quite similar to the band.

    Date is Set! Bye-Bye Bandie.

MAN O MIGHTY you have had your share of it for sure!! My hubby had the Band for 13 years, they punctured it during his fill. Back to surgery he went. Now, he did lose 100#'s with his band. But his beginning weight was 520#'s. Now I'm not saying it was all from the band at that time. Fast forward to 2012ish he could not hold down even Water. He is a VETERAN so he went to the VA who sent him to a Bariatric Surgeon 2 hours from home. So in Sept they had planned to remove his band and his gallbladder, due to gallstones. Then revise him to a RNY. (which I had done July 2, 2013 and I have been very successful with mine) His band had eroded into his liver so they couldn't do the RNY. But told him that in 3 months they would finish the RNY. He developed abscesses and was so deathly sick for 9 months, 3 of which he doesn't even remember!! Oh course the Surgeon wouldn't do his surgery after all. He went to Portland, Oregon to an awesome Bariatric Center. By this time we found out that he has Kidney Cancer and they can't do anything for it until he loses 150#'s. So last June, we went to Juarez, Mexico. He went for the RNY but due to all of his past surgery's and his messed up band, his whole right side was solid scar tissue so he ended ugetting the Sleeve. He has lost 60#'s but he just can't fight the head hunger. The saddest part of all of this, was the Surgeon that talked him into the Band said he wasn't strong enough for the RNY. That man was so very strong and had just retired from his job!! I wish we al had a crystal ball back then it sure would have helped him out!! Now I didn't tell you all of this to scare you, I just wanted to vent AGAIN and to make sure that if you decide to go t0o Mexico for WLS please don't go thru BeLiteWeight. I have sense heard of many others having AWESOME AMAZING surgery's in Mexico just not where we went. It sure is much cheaper than the US but if we knew all about JUarez we sure woud have changed. The other sad thing is he has insureance that would pay for WLS, but he couldn't lose the amount of weight they wanted him to and get his A1C (diabetes 3 month of Blood Sugars) down to a 7 or 8. Good Luck and I look forward to following your post and watching you get healthy!! Thank you for listening.

    Third Revision...

I've heard of it though I'm not sure why surgeons would revise from band to sleeve (of course they have their reasons, just wondering what these reasons are). Anyway I was a band to MGB and a band to sleeve wouldn't have been possible anyway because of so much scar tissue. I also had severe reflux so sleeve was out of the question anyway. However, if one revises from band to sleeve I'm not surprised about the second revision because quite a few people get severe reflux after sleeve.

    BCBS of New England

Hey everyone, Just wondering if anyone has had BCBS of New England and gotten approved for the lapband revision to gastric sleeve. I've had my band for 6 months now I have lost no weight i've had fill after fill I feel terrible I'm getting acid reflux at night and I'm getting things stuck left and right. I go see a new surgeon on the 28th and I'm hoping he can help me out my old surgeon only did the band and he made me feel bad about myseflt the last time I saw him because I gained 5 lbs. I don't like the way the band makes me feel and I can feel the port all the time it really sucks. I wish I had know about the sleeve before the band because I would have gotten that instead. Keeping my fingers crossed that this new surgeon will be able to help me out thanks
  8. I have seen a few people post about significant regains on the Obesityhelp Revision Forum. I have also seen some posted on an Aussie sleeve forum where they have been doing vertical sleeves longer than in the U.S. A few of the ladies had significant regains after pregnancies which we all know could happen because pregnancy can obviously make people gain weight (although I know one lady who is about to have her 2nd post op baby and has remained slim throughout!!). Some of the people had simply not lost enough weight to get out of the obese or morbidly obese BMI range. And yes, some people had gone back to eating crap and gained weight back. Unfortunately it can happen with any surgery if you revert back to snacking on high carb foods especially like cookies or ice cream on a very regular basis. A couple of people experienced regains after going on a medication for an illness that causes weight gain. A few of them had been sleeved back when the stomachs were made quite a bit bigger than they are now and didn't remove all of the fundus like most surgeons do now. We always have to remain forever vigilant and learn the good habits after surgery. Not eating and drinking at the same time---protein first--things like that are big rules for a reason. Good luck everybody!

I need someone to kick my ass...

Paula I know how your feeling. I too am trying to get back on track. I was banded 12/09 and lost 70 lbs and then had a dilated esophagus so my band was deflated for a few months and then I had a port revision due to a leaky port all last year and gained back 20 pounds. Since that time I have finally lost the 20 and encouraged to continue due to the support on this forum AND my new friends on My Fitness Pal as they can see what I eat everyday and I'm held accountable. I'm addicted to logging my food and finding new things to cook and it has totally motivated me. Now I just need to get back into exercising! Once you get your mind made up you can do it!!!
  10. I am very sorry to hear you are having issues. I've been there. I was banded in Oct 2012, had revision from a slip after getting very sick with a stomach bug June 2013... did ok for a few months then my band failed and I had it removed Nov 2013. I had Gastic Sleeve just this past Monday (the 16th) and I feel great. I did have to spend 1 night in the hospital which I didn't with the band but I was thankful for the constant pain meds and nausea meds in my iv and attention I got. I came home about 3:30 on Tuesday and only had nausea that night. Haven't had to take pain or nausea meds since Tuesday night. Stomach sore like with the band just getting from sitting to standing position. Taking that 1st shower was heaven and I felt so much better too. Just been sipping on Clear liquids and Protein drinks every 30 mins or so. I can tell that I can't hold much for sure and yesterday I got to see my new itty-bitty banana shaped stomach! My doctor does a Barium Swallow to check for leaks and reflux on day 3 so it was neat to see that after 5 sips my stomach was full... I had to wait a few hours to add Water to that since the barium was so thick. Good luck in your decision but I can say, I'm not regretful for sleeving at all!!!

Band to vsg and now to rny QUESTIONS...

Hi I am new to forum but just wanted to share my journey. I had vsg 2011 .then Gerd really bad hernia along with my tummy getting twisted my Dr not sure how it happen but it did. Revision was in March 1st 2 months not so good but I am bouncing back really well. Didn't want to make this to long. Lol
  13. I'm a little curious why you wouldn't go back to Dr. Ortiz for your revision. Do you think he is in some way responsible for your current GERD situation or is he just too expensive? I know he's on the pricey side.

    Band to Sleeve

I had a relatively successful band for since 2009, and this last September I had the revision to sleeve. Hmm, let's see, I had it done outpatient by a skilled surgeon. It was fast, she removed the band and did the sleeve in about an hour. I was released at 4 pm that same day. It was an easy recovery. I followed everything she suggested, and by day 3, other than muscular pain, I pretty much felt normal. Eating wise, it's quite different. Like the band, liquids and pureed food passes through, so slider foods are still slider foods. When I eat dense solids, I get satisfied very quickly. I've had the sleeve for almost 11 weeks, and I haven't slimed or got plugged yet. I did get nauseous once due to eating too fast as I was in a big hurry that day. Luckily with the band it became a habit to really chew my food and not drink after a meal so for the most part, it feels as if I never had any surgery. I can eat fruits, steak, vegetables like I did before my band but due to the sleeve I get full at about 4 oz (depending on how dense it is). I don't regret the revision at all. I did go in to have my band adjusted and wasn't seeking any revision of any kind but the doctor who saw me suggested for me to change to the sleeve to avoid any future complications since I had a history of esophageal dilation due to being too tight.
  15. I had a revision surgery on Sept 10, 2012 with Dr Garcia. All I can say is that he is an amazingly skilled surgeon and I was well looked after while I was there no complications at all! He is also reasonably priced and I of course would highly recommend him. I am currently 24 pounds below my original goal weight and at 16 months out still have lots of restriction and little to no hunger; yah Dr Garcia, thank you!!!
  16. Just Wanted to touch base with you regarding my extended tummy tuck results. Its been over 5 months now and I can finally say I am feeling closer to feeling normal again. I still have very little sensation around alot of my stomach and upper thighs. From what I understand it can take Years to resolve since sensory nerve regrowth is very slow according to my doctor. I finally feel comfortable lifting weights now. I still avoid crunches because it still feels tight and uncomfortable to me. My Scars are healing and fading wonderfully. The side scar and back scar are higher than I would like, but I had already been prepared to accept a scar before I had the surgery so I have accepted that. I went to a followup visit last week and discussed scar revision. The back of my scar is a little jacked up and puckered looking where the drain tubes came out. I also asked if he could lower my side scar and he said he could if I wanted him to. I get my scar revision in October so I am very excited about that. The only dissapointment I have is that when I started running on the treadmill my butt jiggles. I have excess skin on my butt and thighs which really need to be removed if I want a super tight jiggle free body. I probably should have gotten a lower body lift butt I couldn't afford it. I might get my backside and thighs done in a few years to finish things off. I will see how much I can firm things up with the gym first. Overall I am very satisfied with my results. My doctor did an awesome job. Ok - heres some pics for you guys.
  17. Has anyone had a revision from sleeve to a duodenal switch with GEHA insurance? I’m having terrible GERD. I had the sleeve 6 years ago and have been on nexium ever since. My GERD is getting worse. So I’m thinking about starting the process of having a revision. Not sure if GEHA would cover it or even where to start with the process.
  18. My story is similar to yours. I was banded 6 years ago in 2005. I had a starting weight similar to yours around 285 or so. I too lost over 100lbs the first year. Then my band slipped and I had to have revision surgery as well. That was in 2006. After that I was so scared to have a fill. I was at my goal weight and I thought I could keep the weight off. 5yrs, a divorce, remarriage, and new baby later...I have gained all but 20lbs of my weight back. I was self pay for my band as well so I started feeling like there was no hope and I am a failure. I finally went back for a fill 2 years ago and it wasn't enough. However, last week I had a wake up call. My stomach had been hurting and very sore for two weeks and I just could not take it anymore. I was convinced my band had slipped even though I had no restriction. I went to the ER and of course the doctors there were "band phobic" and they did not want to even try to take a look. Then I made an appointment with a band doctor who I had never seen before. I chose him because he was closer than my previous band doctor. WHat a mistake!!!! He didn't care about the problems I was having. He made me attend a seminar and tried to convince me that I need the sleeve. I don't have the money, or the time for another surgery, although it sounded so tempting. Well, long story short, I went to see my original band doctor and he took an x-ray. My band was in perfect condition. The pain was being caused by a torn stomach muscle and it had nothing to do with the band. I was so relieved because I had already prepared myself for band removal....and to be honest I wanted it out. But what a wake up call! He gave me a fill, and I finally finally after 6 years, have a little restriction. I do think I need one more fill, but I have already started trying to go back to the original band habits that helped me lose the 100+lbs the first year. Since Thursday, I have lost 6lbs. We have been through too much girl, to give up now. Lets give this one more shot...together. We did it before. We can do it again. Lets be patient with ourselves....we are not failing our bands...they failed us. So it is up to us to take control and make it right. If you need a weight loss partner I would love to stand by you through this. I wish you luck with your fill. I know what you are going through so please msg me anytime.
  19. I also had difficulty with my band, it slipped, and I am at manager at a hospital. My band was covered under one insurance while my revision to gastric bypass was covered under another insurance carrier. My physician did not have any difficulty with my carrier to prove it was medically necessary to complete the surgery. I began the process last August and had gastric bypass November 10. My physician required I attend three informational meetings that are held once monthly before he would complete the surgery—this is the only reason for the delay. I also did not have reflux until the band slipped but medication did not help me. What my surgeon found while I was in surgery was a tremendous amount of adhesions had formed where the band was originally placed. The “reflux pain” I was describing was actually caused by the adhesions. I was in surgery for an hour and half longer than expected. He believes my issues were caused by the adhesions in addition to the band slipping. Unlike my band my recovery was slower than I expected due in part to the extensive surgery they needed to complete and the length of time I was under anesthesia. I was out of work for three weeks and returned part time for almost two weeks. Due to my commute (1hr 15 min each way) the first week back to work I was only able to manage to stay onsite until noon, but, this was due to exhaustion more than anything. The second week I had more strength and by the end of the week I was able to work a full 8 hour day. About mid to late January I started to feel more like myself and did not require a nap on the weekend every week. The last 6-8 months with my band my weight did not change. Since my surgery I have lost an additional 32 pounds. Good Luck!
  20. While reading your post, I'm looking around my house for cameras. Here is why; your experience mimics my experience in February of this year. It was a few days after having surgery to remove the ineffective lap band. I will not repeat my account of events, because you've captured them so well for me! I am now seven days out of revision surgery (sleeve, of course) and I have yet to experience a release. I am desperately afraid of a recurrence of "our" event that I am almost in panic mode at this very moment. I think I will make an appointment for a colonic as quickly as possible because I do not ever want to experience that level of discomfort again in this life time. I begged my husband to "knock me out" because the pain was almost intolerable! I almost logged in earlier to blog about this very same thing...so thank you! There are many suggestions given and for the most part, when you are experiencing that amount of pain I know from experience that any/all remedies suggested DO NOT offer any relief during that crucial moment.
  21. Shouldn't this be in the complications / revisions forums?

    More than 10 tears

What surgery did you have? Some surgeries from a while ago seem to have lived their lifespan and are very hard to get going again, in these instances a revision may be required.

Thank you LosingIt2018 for responding, I'm kinda laughing at myself because now I have to chose which forum to post my intro, you see I've had the Roux en y procedure 18 years ago and had my revision 6 days ago lol maybe I'll post in both. And thank you also for welcoming me, I appreciate you.

    Lap-Band to Sleeve

Laurie I came across quite a few posts saying they got the full coverage of their band/sleeve revisions in the states. I really would not give up that easily. Just be a persistent and stay your ground. I am not sure where I had seen all the posts about covered revisions but if you do a Google search or a search on bariatricpal.com gastricsleeve.com I am sure you will find enough materiel to make your case.
