  1. Have you addressed these questions with your surgeon or NUT? I am a bit confused at your first question. You've already had the revision surgery but you aren't sure of the difference between the band and the sleeve? I am POSITIVE I am misunderstanding that. And no, mashed potatoes are NOT liquid. If you can't drink it through a straw, it's not liquid. (And no, just because you CAN drink it through a straw, doesn't mean you should. Milkshakes are out of the question! ) THINK PROTEIN!! If you get all your Protein in, you should not have room for anything else.
  2. I read about many of the issues with the lap band while I was intially researching WLS. It seems that some bands were made of substandard materials, prone to corrosion or improperly fitted to begin with. In those cases, i can understand not wanting to have something literally rusting or corroding on my insides. As for the rest of it, I'm inclined to agree. I saw a post from a lap band to sleeve revision patient who has regained the weight and is now trying to qualify for a bypass. Personally, I think it would be malpractice to continue to operate on someone who obviously has an underlying issue that surgery will not address. It might not be the answer that is popular, but all of the procedures work. Not following the diet is the part that doesnt work. Huat eaeloer today there was someone inquiring about revision, and asking about eating mashed potatoes on liquids.
  3. I found myself at a WLS regain support group site someone had recommend in another thread just to check it out, and read this comment the founder of the regain program said about revisions: "If I had a dime for everyone who asks about ‘a Revision’, I would not have to work. Even if you need a revision due to a mechanical band failure, you still ate your way through the first surgery. If do not change the way you eat and have more surgery, you will eat your way through that one as well. More surgery is not the answer. Bariatric surgery is not a dam that is built to hold back the deluge FOREVER, it’s meant to hold back our eating and remove the bulk of the weight burden while we get our act together!" I know this is going to be a touchy subject for some, but what are your thoughts about the above statement? I have always agreed with her sentiment, but also don't like to paint everyone with the same broad brush because just like with anything, there are always special circumstances. What say you?
  4. Thank you. We already did that. My surgeon just called me and he's getting on the phone with insurance. He said that I'm one of those people that the band just didn't work for. My insurance covers revision in that instance as well. He said he's confident that he can get the decision overturned. I'm crossing my fingers.
  5. I just had my post op appointment. The reason why I had to get the sleeve was a decision made by the surgeon. Before when I had the surgery it was a plication with a lap band. Then he revised it to the sleeve surgery. When the surgeon before the surgery did it he messed it up. It wasn't done correctly. So basically this surgeon revised it and the best bet was to make it a sleeve. I am losing a lot of weight now but it is getting too much. I am losing too much weight on this.
  6. Thank you for your insight. However, I had been following the diet. In fact, with a few exceptions, I'm still eating like I would with the band. My band is empty right now. I've been on Prilosec about 2 months now and am feeling better; but I'm also more hungry. What I didn't say was every time they try to add Fluid to the band now, I get heartburn...even though the barium swallow didn't show reflux. It did show irritation near the pyloric valve consistent with my symptoms though. The slider foods started after I started having heartburn when I would try to eat solid Protein. So, I started eating more cottage cheese, tuna with mayo, etc. I'm also wanting to revise to gastric bypass. I have been on the struggling lap band board as well as both the sleeve and bypass revision boards. I'm just asking about insurance.
  7. I gotta say, I scratch my head often at some of questions fielded here. You had a major surgery but didn't think to get any of the post op care materials from the surgeon before heading home? I'm torn on this, because I belong to a Facebook group for the company where I had my surgery. Literally, every single day people are asking questions that I know for a fact are addressed in the post op care materials. Questions about when they can eat what, how long to dress the wounds, etc etc etc. I guess it's easier to ask a group of strangers on the internet sometimes than to get the information from the only trusted source (your surgeon). Lastly, and I might take some abuse for pointing this out, you just had a second WLS surgery to revise from a previous failed WLS, yes? WHY are you already looking for ways to eat around the sleeve? Liquids means liquids. Mashed potatoes are not only completely devoid of any nutrition whatsoever, but they are not liquid either! WLS is only as successful as you decide it will be. If you don't put in the work required, it's unrealistic to expect the same results as people who do.

    Feeling anxious.... advice?

I had a Crap Band for 11 years, revised to bypass 26 months ago. I am thrilled with my choice. I don't think I dump at all. i have had a couple of weird sweating incidents, but that could be hot flashes. I eat chocolate nearly every day (carry dark chocolate in my purse and have a small piece for "dessert"). I did lose hair and that went on for about a year, but then it stopped and my hair has returned to its former glory. Among the things I can now do: Sitting with crossed legs, fitting into an airplane seat comfortably, sitting in the backseat of a van between two car seats , shopping for "regular" clothes, wearing skinny jeans and boots, wearing yoga pants in public without looking like one of the "people of Walmart". If I could do it on my own, I wouldn't have regained the 90 lbs I lost with the band. I lost 107 within 14 months after the bypass. Have gained 10 back in a year but I am so much more able to keep that from snowballing!
  9. My $.02: Find the reason the restriction of the band didn't help with weight loss. There's a great deal of personal commitment required to make any WLS surgery work, as it is just a tool and not a miracle. Eating habits must be changed. Mental changes around food must be addressed by you. There are many successful lap band patients on this site, reach out and find out what they did differently and how they successfully lost weight. Secondly, barring some medical issue like a slipped band, erosion etc I can understand the telictannce to pay for another procedure. The sleeve is not magic. Any and all weight loss will come from careful planning, following dietary guidelines closely and addressing your relationship with food. It's not much different from a band, it just removes some of the possible negative outcomes like slipping, erosion, adjusting fills, etc. The work is still up to you. You admit that you aren't following a weight loss plan now, so why would that be any different with the sleeve? If you are hell bent on getting it done, i would suggest going to Mexico for a revision and self paying.
  10. If you can find a bariatric program willing to work with you, you may look into submitting for revision due to medical complications, not "failure" to lose weight. I have seen dozens of patients revise from band to bypass or sleeve because of erosion of the stomach, slipped band, hernias, infections, etc. In your case you have port pain. It's typically a matter of documentation and coding. Also seen insurance approval of sleeve to bypass due to GERD. The patient's weight loss or lack thereof didn't factor in if there was a medical problem associated with the surgery. But if all else fails, you can try Mexico. That's where I had my VSG 6 years ago because it was still considered experimental in the US and insurance wouldn't pay for it. In fact, my surgeon specializes in revisions. Good luck with your knee replacements! Ugh!
  11. I just wondered if anyone has had anything like this happen. I have BCBS NC insurance. I'll give you the Reader's Digest version of my history. Lap Band in 2008. My surgery weight was 258 and I lost down to 227. That's it. I never got any further no matter what I did. I got pregnant, gained weight, and then have failed to lose it. I started eating slider foods and gained a little more weight. Then, the heartburn kicked in. It led me back to my doctor even though I was ashamed of the weight I'd regained. I had an Xray, an EGD, and a barium swallow. My band is in the right place. It hasn't slipped. No H. Pylori. They didn't see any reflux on the barium swallow. I beg to differ since I was hurting pretty badly and having that awful left shoulder pain after the procedure. Anyway, my surgeon has recommended that I get a revision to gastric bypass. Today the insurance company said they wouldn't cover it because it wasn't medically necessary. They also told me to have my surgeon call so they can do a peer review. Any success stories for something like this?

    GERD

Hi all! I've had the lapband since 2008. I'm hoping for a revision to the bypass. Does anyone who has had gerd with the band and have had the bypass still get severe heartburn?
  13. 1. Full feels different now. I'm four weeks out from revision and get full very quickly-I'm on soft foods and can usually eat about 1/4 to 1/2 cup to feel full. Don't overeat! It's not like the band where you can eat a few more bites-if you think you are full, STOP! It will all come back up. 2. Did your program give you a food progression program?? I was two weeks full liquids, two weeks puréed, two weeks soft and then ease into "regular" food. I just moved to soft foods earlier this week. 3. You had surgery on the INSIDE of your stomach. There is a food progression to allow the stitches and staple line inside of your stomach to heal. It didn't feel good because your stomach has an open wound. Call your doctors office or go see a dietitian. You can mess up your recovery if you don't follow the rules. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. Hi revision from lapband to rny Dec 7th! My surgeon wants me to drink the Optifast 1 week pre op and 3 weeks post op. Has anyone ever tried optifast? And are there any comparables you like better? Thanks!
  15. Who'sThere

    Hello! :-)

Girl, I hear you! I drive an hour for my appointments. I'm a revision patient (had lapband in 2009) so my process was much faster but it almost wasn't. My insurance didn't require I redo the 6 months and all that (psych eval, nutrition, etc). My surgeon did want me to redo the nutrition class and go to a support group meeting, and I was fine to do that. I actually enjoyed them, and I have been to the next support group meeting too. The kicker was that the lady that does insurance in his office would not believe that my insurance didn't require me to redo everything. She basically called me a liar and had me call insurance and have them call her on 3way. Then she told the representative who was reading her emails from the bariatric nurse reviewer to the lady that she didn't believe her and would call the nurse reviewer herself. The nurse reviewer read her my criteria (either surgical or medical complications, that's it) and she TOLD the reviewer that I had no surgical complications. Wth??? I never claimed to have surgical complications, thank goodness. My complications are medical (endocrine related) and she hadn't seen the letter from my endocrinologist. Well, the end of the story is it was approved in full and she had to eat crow. Moral of my story: call and ask what your insurance requires and push for yourself. Be your own advocate! It definitely worked for me. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App
  16. Hi, same situation here. I was sleeved on August 2011. At that time my weight was 210 and 4 months later my weight was 169 (41 pounds loss) after that no more weight loss, Right now my weight is 192 (23 pounds gain). I am very disappointed with this whole situation, I feel that somehow my surgery was not correct. I read all the replies to this post and I am starting to look in to the Mini Bypass Revision, but I do not think my husband or adult children will go for this. I will go see another bariatric surgeon just to see if the original procedure was done correctly or not. I have 2 friends that had sleeve surgery around the same time as me and they have lost 100 plus pounds, they are never hungry ( I am hungry a lot). How is every one doing after the Mini Bypass Revision? Does insurance cover this here in the US? How much did it cost in Mexico? Thank you

  18. I just got my date today! On December 15, I will be revising from lapband to RNY. I had to fight with my surgeon's office to get it sent in, but they did (surgeon himself helped nudge the office) and it was approved in 8 days. I'm so ready to start this new journey! 19. I had VSG 4 years ago and it was a great stepping stone to feel what weight loss surgery really is... restriction. It doesn't stop the cravings, the emotional eating, etc. I am getting ready to work towards a revision into gastric bypass and now I feel ready. I understand that my relationship to food is an unhealthy one so I am working on eating to live not living to eat. I first had to get my anxiety under control and actually saw a psychiatrist. Food is a great comfort for me so I feel that I need more restriction to help me lose the pounds I put back on over the years. If you are worried about your relationship with food, I'd recommend seeing a mental health provider ( psychiatrist, therapist) to get down to the root of why you don't "feel" full. Some people just love food too and that's ok, we just have to learn to choose high Protein foods before the carbs ( the majority of the time ) Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. My surgery date is Nov. 21, 2016 in San Angelo, Texas. I am having a gastric bypass revision. I'm excited and a little scared but ready also for a new life. I would love to hear from you or anyone who has gone through this or going to.
  21. I'm 6 years out and No complications. Like others mentioned, GERD and Vitamin deficiencies are the most common long term complications of VSG I saw in my support group. GERD can usually be controlled with medication and diet, but sometimes requires revision to bypass. I have yet to meet anyone that developed vitamin deficiencies that were taking the required supplements and having bloodwork done regularly. Much less common long term complications that I've seen in my support group through the years were dumping (although much more common with bypass and usually controllable with diet) and reactive hypoglycemia. There were far more long term complications in my group for people with Lapband or any of the bypasses.

    Band to Sleeve

I had a relatively successful band for since 2009, and this last September I had the revision to sleeve. Hmm, let's see, I had it done outpatient by a skilled surgeon. It was fast, she removed the band and did the sleeve in about an hour. I was released at 4 pm that same day. It was an easy recovery. I followed everything she suggested, and by day 3, other than muscular pain, I pretty much felt normal. Eating wise, it's quite different. Like the band, liquids and pureed food passes through, so slider foods are still slider foods. When I eat dense solids, I get satisfied very quickly. I've had the sleeve for almost 11 weeks, and I haven't slimed or got plugged yet. I did get nauseous once due to eating too fast as I was in a big hurry that day. Luckily with the band it became a habit to really chew my food and not drink after a meal so for the most part, it feels as if I never had any surgery. I can eat fruits, steak, vegetables like I did before my band but due to the sleeve I get full at about 4 oz (depending on how dense it is). I don't regret the revision at all. I did go in to have my band adjusted and wasn't seeking any revision of any kind but the doctor who saw me suggested for me to change to the sleeve to avoid any future complications since I had a history of esophageal dilation due to being too tight.
  24. Has anyone had a revision. I had my lap band taken out in March due to some awful situations and just a huge mess. Now I'm in the process of preparing for the sleeve. I'm excited but nervous. Anyone doing the revision or have had it done? What has your experience been? Thanks in advance! Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
