    alcohol

Mine says a year for several reasons. 1 - Alcohol can be irritating to a healing pouch. Possible ulcer risk, also. 2 - There is a high risk of transfer addiction. It's not uncommon for weight loss surgery patients to become alcoholics. Most of us had a food addiction and need to learn to deal with our problems without turning to food or other substances for comfort. Avoiding alcohol while we are learning this is important. 3- High risk of liver damage and/or failure. While we are losing weight fairly fast (primarily during the first year) toxins stored in the fat are released into our bodies. Our liver is working overtime to process these toxins. Adding alcohol can be dangerous at this time. The danger lessens as weight loss slows and stops. Always follow your own doctors instructions. Each doctor has his own instructions based on their own personal experiences and observations.
  2. I'm keeping my gastric bypass on the down low with coworkers. I seem to be getting unwanted attention about how little I'm eating and not drinking alcohol. Anybody have similar issues and have tips for diffusing comments.

    alcohol

My doctor plainly said to avoid it as much as possible. He didn't want to give me a specific "go drink alcohol" permission lol. I started though about 3 months out. But I don't drink often. One drink a month or so. Less sometimes.

Imus show suspended due to racial comments

Tommy O, If you actually read the rest of my post, I said that some are true and some aren't. I do not believe all Irish are a bunch of drunks, but there is some truth to an Irish wake. I was in Ireland for weeks as I was engaged to an I rish fellow from there, quite a sweet country. I was very confused when we were "going to mass". I thought I was going to church. Instead we were at teh local pub. However, it is not like everyopne was drunk. The irish use this as a social gathering. There were whole families there, grandpas and grandmas down to little "babbies". They did "sing-song" the real kareoke and everyone has to take a turn. Outsiders or someone who didn't like the irish would say..drunks. Others wouldn't. But the fact that they gather at pubs and have alcohol at wakes, to some tea-totelers would be considered drunks. Not me, I say live and let live. However, just a note, I did break up with him because his life style was centered on guiness a bit too much for my lifestyle (lol).
  5. I think the 40 grams of carbs should be 40 grams of NET carbs. Carbs - fiber - sugar alcohols = NET carbs An apple may have 8 carbs but with its fiber, you may only have 4 or 5 net carbs.

Liz, glad you're feeling better. I have to see my husband Tuesday at my home for a house appraisal. I have only seen him once in person in the past 15 months and that was at court. I haven't been inside my house since I left. Lots of emotions, but of course the one thing that bothers me the most is my weight. I'm ten pounds heavier than when I saw him at court In April. I gave up all alcohol three weeks ago but the scale has not gone down. I'm going on liquids for a couple of days even though my fill appointment got postponed this week. Protein shakes and Soups. That has always been good for a couple of pounds down in the past. My lawyer suggested bringing a friend with me to the house. I decided against it because I don't want him picking a fight with her, and I also don't want to give the impression that I need reinforcements. I will be so glad when this divorce is over. My lawyer told me it probably won't be done until next summer. Meanwhile, I deal with the body issues. I felt so confident in April, and that court date was my lowest weight since WLS. Then I spent these last six months eating wrong, drinking every weekend, and gaining these ten pounds. Anyway, you here are my reinforcements. So talk me off the ledge, please! Just kidding. It will be okay. I just wish I didn't feel fat this week. That jerk is not worth this angst. Edited to add: Mr. Wonderful always predicted I would fail at LapBand. He was openly critical and would often mock his coworker who dropped 100 pounds and then stabilized, with probably 80 left to lose. This idiot's words are in my head this week.
  7. I am not much of a drinker, before surgery I would have a cocktail once every couple of months so this has not been a big deal for me. I was told by my surgical team and actually had to sign a contract that I would not use alcohol for minimum of 1 year post surgery. I was wondering if that was the norm for most surgeons? I have seen quite a few folks mention they have had alcohol even weeks out of surgery and I have wondered about this topic. I am a rule follower by nature so I will refrain for any least the year, but I am curious.

    Social outings suck now

Late to this thread ... but adding anyway ... I do a lot of travel and entertainment for work. So that is several nights a week usually that absolutely revolves around food and alcohol. It's my job, so I can't avoid it, or change the focus. Additionally, spending time with friends usually revolves around food and/or alcohol as well. Happy Hour, wine tasting get together, cocktails at X's house, etc. Maybe because I'm older, but it hasn't really been that hard. At first I was hyper focused on losing the weight so it was an easy decision to make to have water. When you're only eating 500 cals or less a day, then a 100 cals for a light beer is a lot, and not worth it. As I've gotten near goal, I have relaxed a bit. I'll have a glass or two of wine, or cocktail, or beer. But it is much more so in moderation. I'm mindful that drinking like I used to would add 1000's of cals a week to my diet, many 1000's some weeks. There is no way I'm going to sabotage all my hard work in that way. So it really comes down to the fact that losing and keeping the weight off is much more important to me than drinking alcohol in excess.
  9. I had the revision due to weight regain (not more weight loss from where the sleeve got me). Fourteen years ago, I had the sleeve. It was great, and I kept the weight off for 6 years. In 2014, life began to take its toll, and I gained it back. It took a decade and a half, but it happened. I still had restriction right up to this second surgery. There were other factors, however, like severe depression and anxiety after the death of my parents (18 months apart), a divorce right in between those 18 months, a job transfer I was not expecting and was not happy about the year after that, and then seriously quarantine-ing with my daughter and having to teach from home for a year and a half. Then the medications they put me on which eventually led to drinking alcohol every day.

    Social outings suck now

Temporary thing. Once you're a while out you will be able to eat decent amounts of food and you will (most likely) be able to have some alcohol if you wish. I attended a party just yesterday, yummy food buffet style. No alcohol this time though because the party was in the boonies and I had to drive home. Interestingly enough I feel like having a hangover today anyway, lol.

Debbie, your transformation is amazing. Liz, you nailed it when you promised yourself you won't leave the boards. As you guys know, I stalled for a year (yeah, I know a year is technically not a stall) and then gained a little over ten pounds before I was ready to get my sshit together. I wasn't ready until I was ready. But once I was, miracle of miracles, my band was as reliable as ever. In December I cleaned up my food. I dropped the crap that I knew was causing my weight gain. Dumped the fried everything. Dumped the movie crapcorn. Focused on p rotein instead of bread and p asta. Alcohol was already gone. I tracked the food honestly and even bought a kitchen food scale and used it. I faced the truth about what I was eating. And the truth was that I was regularly eating over 2000 calories a day. No way was this old shot-metabolism, zero-exercise body going to lose weight on that amount of calories per day. Slowly I got my calories down to approximately 1100-1200 per day. I've gone from 204 down to 189 since December. It's been slow but it's coming off. And that "tightened" my band without an additional adjustment. Funny how this contraption works. Feed it lean solid p rotein and no sliders for a couple of weeks and restriction comes back. Don't give up on yourself. I don't know why I stagnated for a year. Furthermore I don't know what emotionally kicked my butt into reenergizing. I have my theories, but today the reasons are less important than the success I am experiencing. It feels good to feel good again. You will too.

    Pardon my bluntness...

That is an interesting parallel. Most of us are food addicts. I guess if you were an alcoholic and went to your AA meeting and asked if it would be ok to have a few beers on Valentine's day or shared that you threw back a fifth of vodka, you would get some different responses. Hugs from some maybe? I don't know. Others who were disappointed in you? Some who were angry? Some who said they understood but tomorrow is a new day? Of course not really quite the same thing since we can't stop eating food. I just thought it was an interesting way to consider another angle.

    Banded Bikers II

Welcome Pipedoc! You'll love the band. It really helps but you got to work it and it sounds like you're off to a great start. You'll be back on the bike soon too! Have fun tonight. If you're a drinker know that the alcohol sneaks up on you faster now so start slowly!!! Riding today in an event to support our Vets. Should be a gorgeous day later. Little cool right now but that's what chaps are for. If you're a HOG member I'm on page 58 of the new HOG magazine! Woohoo!!! Peace to all and ride safe!! Carol

    November/Christmas Goal

Well, Christmas is just about a week away. I cannot see me reaching my goal of 260. However it was a pretty steep goal of 17 pounds so I am absolutely thrilled with 12 pounds gone. I have to admit that my diet hasn't been quite normal the past couple of weeks. Things like cookies, chocolates, alcohol keep passing under my nose. I know this isn't thanksgiving, but this is what I am thankful for this Christmas. -I did not eat the whole bag of cookies -I did not hide any chocolates around the house so I could eat them when no-one is looking. -I am not stuffing myself to the point of being sick. I have indulged in little treats in the lasts couple of weeks, the key word being 'little'. This is the holidays, and I will not deprive myself of enjoying my life. This time last year I weighed almost 100 pounds more then now, the best thing I ever did was give myself the gift of the lapband. I am going to enjoy this Christmas holiday more than I have in a long, long time, and that will include the small 'little' treat. Anyway, my ticker may or may-not, move in the next couple weeks, but January is just around the corner. BIG goals then  .
  15. Ah, that's very interesting cat woman, you have such helpful information thank you. I clearly have the problem with the sugar alcohols. I was prescribed them post surgery in the soluble pain killers and a liquid antihistamine (reaction to something causing pain and swelling in my mouth) and I had the most unpleasant shaking, shivers and diarrhoea so managed without painkillers (wasn't in too much pain) and took an antihistamine tablet cut up. Can be tricky keeping away from sweeteners and sugar which is why I haven't had any protein shakes at all, they seem to have one or the other in them. I'm managing protein though with carefully balanced meals and at 8 weeks out all seems well. Good Luck dal101, you'll figure it out.

I do fine with alcohol.. just be careful it's empty calories.

    drinking???

Carbonation should be avoided. I don't think the Cosmopolitan's would hurt you at all as far as digestion or the band is concerned. The biggest reason to avoid alcohol (other than the carbonated varieties which must be avoided) is because a lot of us became obese due to food addictions, emotional eating, etc. Anyone who suffers from any kind of addiction can be predisposed to switching addictions when the usual choice is no longer available to us. Also, some mixed drinks are swimming in excess calories. I am not a drinker, but I had a little virgin eggnog over Thanksgiving and found that a tiny half cup stores a whopping 300+ calories. That half cup was yummy but I am afraid to buy any now, lol.

    Beer - Ouch

I'm not worried about becoming an alcoholic. I'm worried about messing up my sleeve. I get the part about the calorie intake but with this small of a stomach, not eating much nor able to drink much. I just want to make sure if I could get it down it would not it ruin my sleeve. Thanks for all the feedback

    Beer - Ouch

My Doc & Nut had printed in our manual (produced a cople years ago) "never" drink alcohol. In class, they had us turn to that page and scratch through the "Never", and simply write "avoid". They said no harm now and again, but don't make it a habit/new transference/addiction.

    Beer - Ouch

People have misunderstood me. I do not dispute that alcohol should be approached with caution post WLS, particlularly for those who were addicted to anything prior to surgery My issue is with a professional making a claim as though it is fact, and citing statistics based on estimates and opinions rather than on research. It is professionally irresponsible to do so. I am sorry to have not been clear in my earlier posts. I do tend to react strongly when people use artificial statistics and unfounded theories to scaremonger. FYI - my surgeon and my NUT recommended wine in moderation as part of a normal and healthy diet.

    Beer - Ouch

My nut advised me that approx 30% of WLS patients become alcoholics after surgery due to the fact that they end up trading one addiction for another. And if there is a family history there is more of a risk.

    Alcohol... ????

I do not know when you had WLS. I used to love an occasional beer but not any more. Wine is smooth and gives me heartburn. Margaritas made me gain weight. I want to drink but I am still trying to find that perfect alcohol. I do not know when you had WLS. I used to love an occasional beer but not any more. Wine is smooth and gives me heartburn. Mindless eating

my surgeon and nut are 8 hours away so I don't have follow up care. It never occurred to me to ask about alcohol when I was there though because I'm not much of a drinker. So guess I wasn't worried about how soon I could add it. That's good information to know though! Thanks!

    Mindless eating

My doc said ABSOLUTELY NO alcohol for 6 months after surgery. I understand that old habits die hard but for me.. With all the hard work and stress of getting to the point of surgery.. I don't understand why peeps would even dare to push the envelope. Thanks for sharing... The route we chose isn't an easy one.. Guess we will all have those challenges along the way!
