    December Bandsters 2009

Hi, everybody hope the Holidays were good and you did not gain a lot of weight...... So I've lost about 40 pounds since I started this journey. Got banded Dec 2nd. Far better experience than expected; no a lot of pain only took 1 days worth of pain meds. Only gained about 3 pounds during Christmas. Found out that pork is not my friend anymore but coffee is good (Thank God) Cottage cheese is good high protein low fat with sugar free jams is better and a good alternative to yogurt. Chili is good. Muscle milk is very good, no fat or sugar and about 25 g of protein. Tofu is good. If you have any tips please let me know

    January 2012 Sleevers!

I'm doing pretty well. Down 44lbs and starting to comfortably get into my next size down clothes. I'm wearing a dress today I haven't worn for at least 4 years. I'm not going to bother shopping until I drop a few more sizes. I have enough clothes through size 14. I've been a total slacker when it comes to exercise! Baaaad girl. I need to get my fanny back on the treadmill and dug up my five factor fitness book that has a six day exercise program included. It's pretty simple- three exercises per day in addition to cardio. I need to get inspried! My giggly belly and arms should be enough to inspire me... Not drinking with my food is sooo hard and getting in all the Vitamins and meds - I feel like I need a schedule: 7am- thyroid, 7:15-7:30 - coffee, 7:45 - yogurt, 8:15 - start drinking a 20 oz drink, 8:45 - actigall #1 for the day. I can't keep track half the time! I've had some moody days too - days when I just want to crawl up and read all day. Thank goodness my mom takes my son quite often on Saturday so I get a day to just be alone. Overall, doing pretty well and very happy I made this choice for myself. Best thing I've done other than have my son and have lasic surgery! =)

    January 2012 Sleevers!

Try plain ff Greek yogurt mixed with extract and Splenda, Lime juice and Splenda, (like key lime pie) Fresh strawberries are AWESOME in it, Unsweetened cocoa powder and Splenda (tastes like chocolate mousse!) Haven't tried, but I hear that sugar free jams are good, Torani sugar free syrups, Crystal Light powder, You would just have to play around with amounts to suit your taste. I also use the ff plain Greek yogurt as sour cream, add chives, s & p, and a drop of lemon juice to top a potato. Mix with salsa for a dip Add ranch dressing powder for a dip for veggies or thin it out with water for salad dressing. I even made a creamy honey mustard last night, ff plain Greek yogurt, yellow mustard, lemon juice, pinch of dry mustard, s & p and Splenda. Let me know how you like these recipes. BTW, I didn't like Fage, Oikos, etc...either, I actually like the Shoprite brand best, and Yoplait, love the key lime, but I don't eat it too often because of the carbs.

    Seeking Buddies 5'2" & Under

@@AmberMc03 YOU WILL DO GREAT! I'm day 5 and it's not too bad. You can have sf Popsicles and yogurt! I bought strawberry Slimfast shake too. I'm also 5'1" and went in at 199.5. My goal is 115! I'm very busty as I have implants and now all this extra weight over them was starting to give me back problems. Therefore, I knew I needed to do something. I am hoping that this was the answer. Looking forward to being much thinner by my birthday on September 24. I will be 43 years old. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    disgusted!

Hi, It's amazing how different our tastes are. But, I think if you mix the nectar correctly, they recommend less than half the Water you used (I use 8 oz) you might like it better. I "overwatered" one time and it was indeed horrible. Correct measurement makes all the difference in the world IMHO. I just reordered a double Nectar sample pack from Vitalady.com as Nectar is the only one I can do mixed with water and I really like their high Protein, no carbs and pretty good taste. Another thing I do is shake it like crazy, in a shaker, of course, with lots of ice. I think the cold helps too. It does foam but I don't mind it. I have to add also, that I have not tried the strawberry Mousse but have had most of the other flavors and liked them all. unjury is another one that I can do easily but many here despise it. I find the unflavored goes great in Soups and I throw the vanilla in yogurt or whatever sweet. The chickes Soup wasn't bad to me either. They have sample packs available. I think Unjury is available on-line only. Good Luck!! Carol
  6. Ahh, good insight! But for the indvidul shakes can you mix all of the fruit/protein/milk/yogurt to get rid of the grit? I tried the nectar with water yesterday and thought I was going to puke..

    Questions about diet after surgery...

It sounds like you are right on track. I don't eat refined carbs either. But I do get carbs from fruit and beans. I eat either Greek yogurt or a scrambled egg for breakfast. Lunch either chili, chicken soup or a chicken breast on top of greens. Dinner I eat what I make for the family but not the starch. So if I make them turkey burgers, for example, I just eat the patty and tomato. If I have an evening snack it is usually fruit or string cheese. I often supplement with a protein shake if I'm low. I average about 900-1100 cal per day, 90 G protein and 40 g carb. I've lost 130 pounds and am 6 pounds from my personal goal.
  8. It took a good 3 weeks before I really started having energy. My taste buds have changed. I can eat yogurt where I hated it before I love greens where I didn't before. Only 7 weeks out so I haven't tried much yet.
  9. im a month out of my VSG ive been dealing with a little Heart burn & i haven't been getting that many calories in my diet.mostly a premier Protein in the morning, a greek yogurt in the middle of the day & Water. im defiantly not getting enough water... and my protein intake generally ave around 42 grams. i feel fine but im worried their may be a prob such a low cal intake.
  10. Thank you so much! I'm on the same diet. Just added full liquid type foods such as fat free pudding and light yogurt. I've never had acid reflux before but this seems to make me have more. I have also been walking and you're right that does help with the gas pressure and soreness. I will keep up what I'm doing then. Just wanted to make sure it was normal. Haha

    How Not To Scarf...?

In my pre-op nutrition class, we were told to buy demitasse spoons and cocktail forks and to use 4 ounce ramekins to hold the food for the first couple of months. I do this for everything that I eat, including yogurt, etc. Having the smaller spoons and forks really, really helps keep the bites small. I did find myself putting another bite into my mouth before I had even swallowed the first bite, so now, I put the utensil down and don't pick it up again until I have swallowed. If it's a new food I am trying, I take a bite, chew really well, swallow and wait a minute or two just to make sure it's going to settle fine. So far, everything has settled well except for Peanut Butter. But, I just started on solid foods so I'm sure there will be some other foods that I will introduce that won't be that kind to me. There rae also some foods that I used to love, that I have no desire to try now, like bananas. I also used to crave salty and savory items like nuts and chips and have absolutely no cravings any longer - which is a good thing! I can actually gulp Water down without an issue so I still tend to drink fast, but I've not had any issues with it -- not even gas, so I haven't changed that.

    I Am Ashamed/embarassed

Talk to your Dr, a lot of Dr's have an alternative pre-op diet is basically a high protien, low carb diet. Mine allowed me to have lean meat, cheese, low fat yogurt, non carb veggies, light salad dressing, etc... It was much easier to follow and after surgery he said my liver looked great which is the main goal. I lost 15lbs on the pre-op diet, at good, and still shrunk my liver. If your Dr allows this than do it... if not then stick to his diet but one mistake does not make you a failure. Good luck!!!!

    Sugar Free Yogurt

King Soopers/Kroger makes a low carb yogurt. I ate it while I was healing.

    Sugar Free Yogurt

Milk products contain milk sugar (lactose), so they will not ever be completely sugar-free. In yogurt, most of the lactose has been converted to lactic acid, which is what gives it the characteristic sour taste...the carb count stays the same but metabolically, lactic acid does not cause as much of an insulin increase. As long as you are staying away from added sugar (i.e. stay with plain yogurt), you are fine. Most folks here go for greek yogurt for the added Protein. I mix berries and a little splenda in mine, however, fruit has natural sugars as well.

    Any September bandsters out there???

Wow - so much has happened since I was banded. I am taking notes and writing it all down! Kellymovingon, thanks for keeping up for me! You all are doing so wonderful! I was banded on 9/19 and had a problem with nausea. I am doing much better. Make sure to walk walk walk. That will help so much. I got to have yogurt this morning and it tasted so good! I have lost 12 pounds since last wednesday! I feel great! I hope you all have great success as well!
  16. Yes, good thinking! Cottage cheese has much more Protein than yogurt does, so it helps you stay full for longer. It seems a bit thicker too, so that helps keep you full also. Good luck on your journey!
  17. Each of those items listed is considered one serving, and it's saying you can have 3 servings or less per day... So essentially, you can have 1c of skim milk and 2 8oz yogurts today. Tomorrow you could have 2c of skim milk and 1/2c of cottage cheese. Does that make sense?

    Im In The Green Zone!!!!!!!

Yeah I feel tight in the morning when I drink my pills and eat my yogurt. But by lunch I'm good. And if I don't chew good then my band screams at me to slow down. This is awesome for me. I am excited to get on the scale every morning. I'm never hungry anymore Like I was In the beginning. I love my band.
  19. I like to take 6oz of yogurt and add a scoop of unflavored Isopure powder. You can't even tell it is in there. I'm not sure if you are able to eat that much? It is yogurt, so it should slide right through, and it makes normal eating the rest of the day much easier.

Plain Greek Yogurt ~ what can I do with it??

My favorite is to mix two cups Greek yogurt with a pack of sugar free cream cheese pudding mix. It makes several servings (at least four depending on how much you eat I guess) and then I microwave some frozen strawberries for a minute and add them to it for a strawberry cheesecake-ish taste.

Plain Greek Yogurt ~ what can I do with it??

You can use it to make a chicken salad--use pre-cooked chicken (or canned), a bit of green onion--not too much!--and some Greek yogurt--zap in the processor (I make it in my magic bullet). Delicious! You can add whatever seasonings you like, but I tend to like it sort of plain. I also like to get it very smooth, so it's more like chicken salad paste, if you get my drift, and I can eat it with a spoon or on a cracker or on a slice of cucumber.... You can also make really good deviled eggs--I can't eat eggs any more after surgery, but even before surgery, I liked deviled eggs with the Greek yogurt. Smush up the hard-cooked egg yolks with some Greek yogurt, some Creole mustard (or I bet sweet-hot mustard would be yummy), a little salt and pepper, and, if you want to get fancy, some fine-chopped pickles or olives. Stuff the egg whites and enjoy.

    Menu Plans & Ideas

I track everything on MyFitnessPal and have lots of MFP friends who do the same. My diary is open to friends. I suggest you get an MFP account, acquire friends who are post-wls, and peek in at their diaries to get ideas and inspiration. How much you eat, how often, calories, protein, etc. will vary a lot depending on what stage you are and what your doctor's guidelines are. When I was at your stage, my rules were: --no more than 800 calories per day --minimum 75 grams of protein per day --maximum 60 grams of carbs per day --3 meals per day, no more than 3 ounces of food per meal --no snacks other than calorie-free liquids and protein shakes --no grains, no sweets, no high-carb veggies such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, or corn (which is actually a grain anyway, not a veggie). Within those rules, I could play around as much as I wanted. Typically I had something like Greek yogurt + berries for breakfast, diced chicken breast with green veggies for lunch, tuna salad & a poached egg for dinner, + 2 protein shakes.

    Healthy-ish cheating

I've tried pro-yo. It's like a protein yogurt, 20g of protein. The flavor I've had is only ok, it just tastes like a frozen protein shake.
  25. I’ve been exactly the same. Just can’t do the purée. I’ve been sticking with yogurt, cottage cheese and popsicles. I’m almost one month post op. Wednesday is 4 weeks and I’m hoping I’ll be more motivated during soft stage.
