    Orientation!

I am scheduled for surgery on April 4. I had a required three month session, which included 2 small pre-op classes, 2 large group post-op sesssions, 2 with nutrionist, 1 psychologist, 2 registered nurse visits, pcp visit, 1 surgeon visit, bloodwork, and an ultra sound. All of my requirements have been met the end of Feb. I have surgery scheduled, but am waiting for the "go ahead" from insurance that can take 4-6 weeks. It was not bad at all. You really learn a lot from the sessions and I looked forward to them. I would not be as prepared today without them. Good luck to you!!
  2. Well you should always listen to your doctors advice. I can tell you that I am 3 months post op and I eat anything. I am actually having tri tip for dinner tonight and Pork tomorrow... I am not sure what the whole year thing is about. I would talk to your doctor about it if you don't think you can make it a year without steak. I honestly think that's pretty crazy.

Hi, This is my 7th day on Protein shakes Pre-Op diet. The first two days are the hardest. My stomach complained so loud. But now things are quiet again. I got enough protein in per day that I'm not hungry at all. Can you have anything else in addition to opti-fast? My doctor just told me to get 60+g or protein, 20 or les of Fat, and 10 g or less of Sugar per day. After 2 days of EAS Protein Shakes, I got so sick of sweet shakes, so I called up my doctor and asked if I can eat clear broth. The nurse said yes. So I got some chicken broth, add Protein powder (while it still cool). heat it up, a dash of salt and pepper. And It was yummy! My nurse also lets me have Jello (Fat free sugar free kind). So I add protein powder to that and eat about a cup of jello a day. 1 Cup of FF/SF jello came out to be 20 calories and 2g of protein. With Protein powder it's adding 55 calories, 1g Fat, 13g protein, 1g sugar. Also, check out the Special K protein Water. Get the powder kind and add them to your water. I take about 2 pack of those a day, 60 calories, total of 10g protein. So far I lost 7 lbs. And my Blood sugar went from 167 to 104 this morning.... good luck to ya!!! *I'm also self-pay. I'm getting banded next week~!! Woo hoo!!

One shake at a time.... that is how to approach it.. do not think of it as 2 weeks...just one shake at a time.... Drink lots of water or crystal light...Don't just get in the obligatory 64 ounces... WAY up your water intake..you will spend a good amount of time on the potty.. but your body will adjust by day 3....... Days 1-3 are the toughest and then it is fine.....you body will be on board to what you are doing from then on.... I did a 6 month program of optifast... towards the end... waiting on people to eat made me angry ... I called them "eaters" LOL! I wanted everyone to be able to shake rattle and roll on with their day with me.....Eating was a waste of my time... I had things to do!! So remember... ONE SHAKE AT A TIME.......and keep posting on here for support....
  5. I just wanted to say hello from Olympia Washington. I am just starting the process. I was just accepted into my insurances "Bariatric Surgery Case Management Program. I have received a checklist of things to do and get started. I am going to my first support group a week from this Thursday. I am so looking forward to getting the ball rolling so to speak. I know as I get things done and checked off the checklist I will have a ton of questions. How long did it take most people to get it all going and actually get the surgery done? Thanks Cherryl Rochester, Washington

    Holy Unbelievable Pain!

No it shouldn't feel that way if your tummy is ready for the cream Soups. I think those are week 3 for me. Still on week 1.

    So excited got my dates!

Well it's been a while since I've communicated. Sorry, but life issues taken presidence. I've been caring for my hubby who fell out of bed one morning having a seizure. It's been tough but God is good and we are taking it a day at a time. He had 4 total by the time the ambulance got to the hospital. I'm eating but can't eat much. I fight to stay away from the sweet and fatty stuff but I must be doing pretty good because I'm still losing. I have to admit I'm kinda of tired of the shakes. They taste good and I've added fruit and a raw egg. I try to have at least 1 a day. Now I'm thinking about buying the T25 workout video, not sure when I can do it yet with my knee accident but I want to have it. I drink ISO 100 it's like a shake but I've never been big on shakes is the issue. I've missed you all and hopefully I'm back at least 1-2 times a week. Be blessed and keep losing!

  9. Hi everyone - Just found this site a week or so ago... I don't have a surgery date yet - last appointment (6 mo) with my PCP is next week - yippee! Hoping to get scheduled by the end of January, for maybe late February / March. My doctor is going to be Dr. Carmody at St. Mary's in Richmond, VA. Any one know anything about him? Just wanted to say hello! I'm sure I'll post more as I get closer to the actual date. Happy New Year!
  10. I'm 1 week post-op and looking for a good place for online support. The place that I had my surgery done is 2 hours away and I can't drive that far everytime I need support. Anyway, I'm just wondering if there is anyone else out there from Maine?????:car:
  11. Hi everyone, I tried to do some research on this before I posted but didn't seem to find anything. I've never had a problem taking pills before. I would take a few smaller pills at a time, no problem. I'm currently one month post op, and I've been taking my surgeon prescribed Prilosec and actigall since one week post op. I had been having trouble getting these down. It wasn't so much my stomach giving my problems, it was actually swallowing them, and getting them to my stomach. They felt like they were stuck in the back of my throat! I drank Water but it didn't seem to help, slowly I would feel them going down. Now that I'm a month post op, I just added a one a day Multivitamin capsule instead of the liquid I was taking, and it's really thrown me off the deep end. I feel like they get in my throat and two days in a row I had to run to the bathroom because I was this close to throwing up. I just can't think of a reason why I would be having physical difficulties swallowing pills now. Once they make it to my stomach I'm fine. Is this all in my head? Has anyone else had this issue? Or any suggestions? I'll talk to my doctor next week anyway. Thanks for the help! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    2 months

Way to go! I also had my two month post-op this week. I have lost 53 pounds. I am doing my first 5K on Saturday . I feel great I bet you do too!
  13. I am a week and a half post op, and experiencing my first cravings: tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots. To drink? Ice-cold fresh Water. I am, of course, still in liquids, but added yogurt this week. I really enjoy the Bariatric Pal Cream of chicken Soup as well. I never craved fresh vegetables before, so I could get used to craving something healthy!! I hope it's still what I crave layer when they are something I can eat.. Pre-Op Diet

I was about 100 lbs overweight and my doctor also put me on the pre-op liquid diet. I asked at his office why they don't do everyone, and they said it is determined during the examination by the surgeon. I think if he/she thinks the liver is fatty and they want to shrink it to make surgery easier they do it. I had Atkins Advantage (ready to drink) and EAS Advantage (powder to mix with skim milk), purchased at Target. I found Worldwide Protein shakes (ready to drink) at Trader Joe's in vanilla and chocolate. It comes in 21g and 35g of protein, and to me tastes better than Atkins. I discovered recently that GNC and the Vitamin Shoppe carry Worldwide, and it also comes in banana cream, Cookies and cream, and strawberry. I found them online so I don't know what the stores carry. They only had 35g online. At Trader Joes the 21s cost $1.69 and the 35s cost about $2.29. There is also a website called unjury and they sell powdered protein to mix with skim milk or Crystal Light(the strawberry flavor only for Crystal Light). Comes in strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, chicken Soup (kind of like chicken broth), and unflavored. I found a cookbook link to livingafterwls.com and bought the cookbook, recipes all by wls patients. One is super easy: make up a package of sugar/fat free Jello pudding, adding a scoop of unflavored Unjury. This bumps up the protein content of the pudding. On the full liquid diet I could have broth, tea, coffee, cream Soups, sugar/fat free popsicles and pudding, yogurt, V8 juice, fruit juice (diluted 50% with Water to reduce carbs) and Protein drinks. To ease me into the liquids, the dietician said I could have a small amount of lean protein, so at night when I would tend to overeat the most, I grilled two unbreaded chicken breast tenders and put salt and pepper on them, or I had two hard boiled eggs with salt and pepper. Four days before surgery strictly liquids. I lost around 35 pounds before surgery. I was a little hungry during the day, but I expected that, and work is so busy I didn't have time to dwell on it. So far I have lost 65 pounds. I was banded 3/25/08.
  15. Hi everyone I was sleeve 3/20 and I purchased Coco butter firming lotion to help prevent loose skin. It may not 100% prevent it but at lease I am doing something to help. Start using a firming lotion of your choice before the weight start falling off but if you hadn't reach your goal start using its not to late. I lost 120 pounds on weight watchers but gain it all back however I didn't have loose skin because of the firming lotion and I used Jillian Michaels No More Trouble Zones DVD for 7 months and it worked. This is totally from my experience and since history repeat itself I am doing it again but want allow history to repeat with gaining the weight back after surgery because I feel that God gave me s second chance to get it right????????????

    I need help!

Cheesy mashed potatoes were on my plan in the first week. Only a small amount, but extremely yummy!

    First months weight loss

My surgery weight was 284.3, in the first month I lost about 30lbs. I've had a couple big loss weeks, and a couple of barely any loss weeks. On average I've been losing 4-5lbs a week.
  18. Welcome to my world! I'm writing this as I am on a plane bound for SLC tonight. i will be working all day and flying back tomorrow night and will fly out again Saturday morning. Day started early so I was able to eat eggs at home, coffee Protein shake on the way to a client meeting, Quest bar at the airport, 1 oz of cheese from the "protein box" I bought on the plane (the one with very little protein), and will probably eat the dried edamame I'm carrying it's me once I land at 9 pm. I will have walked 2 miles by the time the day is over just running from one place to another and that will have to do for my exercise today. I have some Jerky that I may have to nom if I don't make my protein today, and I bought stuff to drink at the airport. I also have one packer of Protein powder that I will sweet talk a barista at Starbucks into making for me at some point I thus trip. You get used to planning ahead, carrying acceptable Snacks, and being utterly shameless about eating in the middle of meetings when NO ONE ELSE is eating! I often cook like a mad woman on the weekends and we eat that through most of the week, and rarely eat out more than once a week if I'm not traveling. I also know what I can eat at airports: Wendy's chili, the insides of any places sandwiches without bread, and SF geek yogurt. That's it really. So a lot more planning and forethought but totally doable.

    Bandster Boost

I met a small group of women for coffee and "Bandster Boost" session this afternoon. They were all recently banded. Four of the ladies met two of women from one of my coffee groups at a recent gathering of bandsters and they contacted me. Two ladies told the other ladies about my egg timer trick... they wanted more information and then we connected by phone and agreed to meet. The ladies wanted to pick my brain on how I have done on my lapband journey. Together as a group we laid the out their goals of what they wanted to get from their lapband journey. We set out a plan... and short-term goals EVERYONE agreed to TRY the follow for 1 week... - plan your meals for 1 week ONLY - try at least one new recipe every week (for those of you that know me I have a HUGE library of bandster friendly recipes that I have collected since being banded) - write down EVERYTHING you eat - listen to you body and your clinic - MAKE SURE you take tiny bites of food and swallow each bite before you take your next bite - only weigh and measure yourself ONCE a week - take time 15 minutes a day for yourself... walk.. or do simple exercises We have exchanged contact information and will be staying in touch. I was telling the group about my Bandster network of friends... not only the ones I meet at the coffee groups but also the many individuals that I speak with on the phone on a monthly basis. Let's face it the lapband journey is not easy... and who can afford to throw away the cost of the procedure. As many longtime bandsters will tell you... you must work with the band and use it as a tool. If you go into this journey with a positive attitude and take it one day at a time and seek support from fellow bandsters YOU WILL HAVE SUCCESS. For any bandsters that have fallen off the "band-wagon"... wether you have just been banded or banded a long time... it's NEVER too late to jump back on and ask for help. Trying to get back on the 'band' wagon

LOL... Did i make it sound like my kids were topping up on junk? Not really...just me! We bake muffins (usually fruit of some description)and when i haven't eaten the choc bits then we add choc bits to the muffins or biccies. Like you we bake for the lunch box. I have a policy that the kids don't actually take ANY prepackaged foods to school. we don't even have museli bars. They always take a salad sanga, 2 pieces of fruit, and for recess they will have a muffin or a cookie along with their fruit. 3 days a week and crackers and cheese the other two days. The muffins and Cookies we bake are from the simply to good cook books, so they are pretty healthy, low in fat and sugar. The only problem is that although they are rationed, I am not. LOL This week will be a good start to change things around as the kids are sick with the flu so no lunch boxes to worry me. There are no more choc chips left to nick and i won't be buying any more! You have my word on that! When I looked at my signature the other night i realised that I haven't had a fill for more than a year...that probably isn't helping how much i can eat also...hmmm Thanks for the kick up the butt though!

    Need some support here...

Music, you are a wise woman and I applaud you and your husband for picking your battles with his mother. He sounds like a great guy. Unfortunately, the poster's boyfriend has not stood up to his overbearing mother on her behalf for the 3 years they have been together. That's a track record and not a good one. If he's the one, I hope they can work it out.
  22. Tiffykins

    No....not the stall!

You're not doing anything wrong. 12 days ago, you're body endured something traumatic, your system is in shock, and is confused. It's more than likely water weight, and I promise if you stick to your program, drink your fluids, walk, and get your protein in, you'll lose again. Your hormones are all over the map right now. Estrogen is shooting through you like torpedoes and your body is just pissed off. Breathe, now breathe a little deeper. Don't get down, and you didn't invest in something that is going to fail you. In maintenance currently, I bounce up and down 2-4 pounds on a daily basis. If it was a 10lb gain, you could freak out. 3lbs is a couple days of urinating and sweating some when you walk. I was obsessed with the scale. It's what worked for me. It kept me accountable, but I never hit a true stall (no loss for 14 days straight) so I can not empathize on those feelings. I hit a bit of a stall close to goal, but it didn't last 2 weeks. If you think it'll help, put the scale away. If you need to keep on getting on it daily, do it. You have to do what is right for you, and the mental part of the journey.
  23. cgshrink

    No....not the stall!

Thanks Tiffykins and Goodlife, I feel very reassured. I put the scale up high in my shoe closet; I will try to stick to a once a week schedule...and definitely not until my period is over!

    Surgery Date 7/30

I was sleeved that Monday, and was back at work the following Monday. Other than getting tired in the afternoons it was ok. Around 3 I would usually crash.
  25. Okay I've been on the soft foods stage (soft enough to cut through with a fork) for 2 weeks now and all I can tolerate is 3-5 small bites. Is this normal? Should I be tolerating more? I'm not even hungry, I'm eating to start getting used to eating "real food".
