*** September 2018 Sleevers ***
Frustr8 replied to macadamia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
And there. are a few more on September 2018 Bypassers and my thread September 2018 Surgeries and Success. You will find many many friends at Bariatric Pal. Oh before I forget, Summer 2018 Surgeries check in here, YLime has that one going for months.😎🌻😛 -
And people, if your mind is set on Mexico as your surgical destination, please consider Bariatric Pal MX. Our founder, Alex Brechler trusted them brought to have his revision done there last March. Could have had his choice of all the world's hospitals, clinics and surgery centers and he still chose there. Pretty good recommendation from where I sit!😝👍😎

If you're breastfeeding, you'll want to make sure you get enough calories to feed the baby, too. This is something to talk about with your teams (bariatric and post-natal and maybe also a pediatric team). Balancing your nutrition and the baby's is going to be important. Even if you aren't breastfeeding, your body is healing, and it is probably holding on to some resources to make milk.

Is it possible to build muscle after the sleeve? I'm about to find out.
Diana_in_Philly replied to BlueCrush's topic in Fitness & Exercise
IMG_0001.mp4I'm meeting with a sports registered dietician who understands bariatric patients next week about just this. I'm down about 140 pounds and I've taken my body fat from about 50% to 30% (which is pretty good for a 57 year old mother of two). However, what I'm learning from working with two personal trainers is that to really build muscle mass and replace fat, you need to add carbs (I know - it goes against everything we think) but as I understand the metabolics of it, if you do not have enough carbs in your diet your body cannibalizes muscle for energy rather than the fat. But I have been frustrated with finding the right balance of carbs to make this happen without going down the slippery slope because they are crack to me. Timing of protein and carbs around your workout is important as well. You should have some kind of protein within an hour after a workout (usually I go for one of those Muscle Milk kind of things at about 30 grams and 200 calories) and fiber rich carbs an hour or so before and starchy carbs and hour or two after. I say this from the standpoint of someone who is 5'3" and now 152. I am a nationally ranked foil fencer in my age group (started fencing after surgery) and I fence 6-7 hours a week and am in the gym doing a crossfit-type class with olympic lifting 3 hours a week, Pilates 1 hour a week and agility/speed/other strength at least one other hour a week. I spoke with my bariatric nutrition team (all really great RDs) and no one there had experience with feeding a post-bariatric athlete. It took a lot of phone calls, but I found someone who is in my health plan so I can have her visits covered. You may want to speak with your team. DO NOT EAT ALL OF WHAT YOU BURN! Some of what you burn yes - but not all. Here's a video of me doing a clean and split jerk from about a week ago. Weight is low (55 pounds) but I'm still learning technique. Did I ever thing I'd be able to do this? Nope. ( Back Squat 215, Deadlift 195, Front Squat 165 - current body weight 152). IMG_0001.mp4 -
The one thing I wouldn't trust after bariatric surgery is.... dunh dunh dunh..... the birth control pill I think it's pretty well-known to be unreliable in preventing conception cuz of our new anatomy. But I had a hyster many years ago so don't really follow this stuff so closely.

September bypass buddies??
SueSaBelle replied to MissPoodle's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Other than gathering post-op things, I have been anxious. I was suppose to have surgery today but the doctor's office called to change it, so now I have to wait 9 more days. I sometimes feel like this entire spring and summer has been me waiting for hip surgery and now wls so I can move again without being in pain. I did get good news that my prescription insurance will cover the cost of bariatric vitamins so I set things up for my first delivery. I know that I need to appreciate this waiting period so I don't take things for granted when I can move with out pain. As my grandma always said, "This too shall pass..." I got my date on July 17 at the conclusion,of my appointment with Dr Needleman at OSU Bariatric Clinic. Suzy the scheduling Secretary plan to arrive by 5 AM for a 7 AM surgery on September 5 2018. Said wanted me to be first that day, that way if my surgery became, more complicated he could devote total attention to me. Hey, I feel honored, first time I have been first for anything. When you get repeatedly a fuzzy lollipop while the rest,of the world. gets cotton candy, you resign yourself to 2nd rate treatment, and I never stuck up for myself. How could I when I was my parents daughter, my husband's wife, my children's mother, I had no independent life, just an extension of someone else. Sad isn't it, I was never me, raised that way, lived that way. When my husband died, and I had to become me, it was scary. See, I had been browbeaten that no one could like me for myself. Been a rough 6 years establishing ME, but guess what -people do like me, I can finally seek the surgery I have wanted , that my parents and husband wouldn't permit me to have. And now I am doing it, and now I can be first in line on my surgery because my future health and ME matter, and for a few minutes I am the Empress, the person extraordinate the world waits for. AND it is Heady and thrilling!

Hello@denisheri I had my surgery July 19th I'm down 51lbs since bariatric surgery. My Sw was 348. I have been having a hard time. Eating solid foods. I was instructed by my surgeon and nutritionist to start eating normal foods at 4 weeks but it gets stuck no matter how slow I eat. I try to eat tuna, shrimp, salmon and they all have me foamy and nausea and vomiting. I just get so depressed and I hate to eat. I just prefer soups and drinks. Even my premier protein gave me foamies once. I am really down a d can't even get excited about the weight loss. Trying to stay positive but I am sad. Alex Brecher mentions BariatricPal in this news article
Born in Missouri posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
August 27, 2018: The gastric bypass procedure reduces the size of a patient’s stomach by more than 90 percent. This procedure affects people physically and emotionally, said Alex Brecher, who launched the online community Bariatric Pal (bariatricpal.com) after his own lap band surgery in 2003. The website has message boards, a store that sells a wide variety of products for men and women who have had weight loss surgery, and even helps arrange less expensive surgeries in Tijuana, Mexico, for patients whose insurance won’t cover the procedures. http://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-fea-bolt-bariatric-20180802-story.html# Brecher, who traded in his lap band for bariatric surgery earlier this year, said the dramatic weight loss can also bring about some unexpected emotional issues. “Some people aren’t ready to look in the mirror and see something other than an overweight person,” Brecher said. “They see that different face looking back, and a lot of times they realize they still have to deal with the emotional things that got them to being overweight to begin with. When you lose weight and you’re not able to lean on food for emotional support, it can bring the other stuff to the surface.” -
Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
baribetty replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same thing happened to me. I’ve found Bariatric advantage plus Iron to be the easiest to take! It’s still 3 capsules which feels like a lot, but I haven’t had nausea which is great. -

Florida Blue (BCBS of Florida) Medical Necessity
Walter Lindstrom replied to UncleBeezy's topic in Insurance & Financing
First off, congrats on taking this giant step toward improving your health! I wish you the best in your journey. This is a fabulous and supportive community who will help you. Hopefully I can give you some important guidance. Your statement about bariatric surgery being excluded on the one hand, but you having the chance to establish "medical necessity" on the other hand really are somewhat contradictory so be very, very sure you have the coverage you think you have. It's awful when folks go through the full process only to find out at the end they did not have coverage in the first place. Have you actually obtained a copy of your Florida Blue coverage certificate (Sometimes called a Summary Plan Description)? Remember you need to look at the full booklet, not just the Summary of Benefits and Coverage that's usually only a few pages long. If the exclusion includes words like "unless medically necessary" or similar, you should be OK. But you REALLY NEED to confirm coverage for your surgery exists - don't take the word of the "customer service" morons who answer their phones at Florida Blue. They aren't interested in customers, nor do they provide much service. I've attached their Medical Policy which was just revised in July. I'm also attaching their Medical Necessity checklist. Hope they help. Last quick thought: don't rely on your PCP writing a letter by itself. Be sure to have medical records which establish your OSA diagnosis and start gathering your proof of non-surgical weight loss efforts because no doubt you'll need those sooner rather than later. Good luck! Bariatric Surgery CMN.doc mcg.pdf -
And here's me thinking there is only one Bariatric Clinic in Mexico. I had a wonderful experience and hope you did, as well.

Do not overstock protein shakes. Yes, don't over buy supplement or vitamins either - my bariatric ones made me barf. There are plenty of stores that stock individual ones. Bone broth with some celery and carrots cooked in and then strained tasted the best. Sweet shakes were a 'no' after surgery - I could tolerate Isopure ready-made blue raspberry or punch diluted w crystal light lemonade much better. Good luck.

STD didn’t pay me for my band to sleeve revision
Sosewsue61 replied to 3nuthut's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Get the dr office to resubmit with an acceptable code, appeal, appeal appeal. Get insurance coordinator from bariatrics to help - tell them if they don't you will be seeking reduced payments - it is in their interests of getting paid to help you repeal this. Don't give up. -
LOL! 🤣 Only diet preachers in my life are on bariatric pal! At first I thought your post was sarcastic and directed at people here. I love coming here to read and learn the different diets that work for everyone, great place to get lots of food ideas. BUT, some people can get a little intense about their way being the only way.

Those really must be good shakes and soups from Bariatric Fusion, hearing good reports on them

How many have lost more than the average?
Frustr8 replied to Separ1418's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
And like the line from an old Roger Miller song "You Can Be Happy If You've a Mind To" My dream goal 175 my Bariatric Table Goal 140, what I would really think doable -
THIS!!!!! and my plan had me do LOW-FAT, FAT-FREE and SUGAR FREE this early on. Search pinterest for ideas, type puree phase bariatric diet or just bariatreic diet. You'll find tons of suggestions. Last thing, maybe try using powder protein and make your own shakes. You can regulate how thick or thin they are and you can add things like fresh or frozen spinach for fiber and extra vitamins. GOOD LUCK!!!!

How Come We Never Look Like We Think We Look (Especially in Photos)???
Frustr8 replied to FluffyChix's topic in The Lounge
That's okay Funky Monkey, I contributed then and I'm back again. I wish my Bariatric Program has taken a picture,of me for reference in the Baiatric Clinic Waiting Room as I had my last Pre-Surgery consult next to the Signboard they have. Got Tomkitten (my son) to take some at home and I want one of me in my surgical patient gown and cap, just before I get wheeled away to the OR. With a blue surgical shower-type cap it won't matter that my hair is light ginger red aka Strawberry Blonde and The gown will be OSU scarlet and gray. And my REBIRTHDAY will be starting and I will never be the same! This is GOOD for the way I am now is not worth writing home about! 9-05-2018 and everthing will be made new! AND I CAN HARDLY WAIT! -
I NEED HELP! RNY in less than 2 weeks and I don’t know what vitamins to get!!
MarinaGirl replied to mdmiller9385's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My surgeon was adamant to not take Flinstones or children’s vitamins post-WLS. He recommends Centrum or One A Day vitamins or their generics (e.g. Kirkland brand vitamins at Costco). I take One A Day Women’s 50+ Healthy Advantage vitamins (2x per day) because they don’t contain iron, which I take at another time. Note: You don’t have to be over 50 or a woman to take them. Heme iron absorbs better and doesn’t cause GI issues like ferrous sulfate. I take Proferrin ES, which I buy online. Most chewable vitamins contain sugar alcohols, which I can’t take post-GB because they cause nausea & vomiting. YMMV You do not have to take chewable vitamins after bariatric surgery. Make sure you get complete lab work at least once a year to see if you need to take more or less of any vitamins or minerals as every BODY has unique requirements. And if you have vitamin deficiencies BEFORE surgery you should correct them as quickly as possible and discuss them with your surgeon and PCP.
