    October 2022 surgery support

I have no preop diet. Surgery is on October 17th. Fly to Turkey on the 16th- Do all testing. No food 24 hours before and was told to avoid fatty foods and carbonated drinks for the week before. Feels a bit odd but my liver tests came back working above average so I suppose that may be it?
  2. Congratulations! Thanks! I’m also looking forward to a healthier lifestyle. I had planned two weeks to be safe! Continued success for you !
  3. I am turning 48 soon, so close. I just had GVS and it went really well despite having an umbilical hernia to boot. I am back to work, since day 7. However, I do teach from home and sit while working. If I didn't I would say a minimum of two weeks. I tested positive for sleep apnea as well. I don't tell many people about the surgery, not because I am ashamed but rather it is like any other health issue for me, I don't go around talking about them. I tell who needs to know or I tell someone who is struggle and asks me how I am losing my weight. The first few days are super hard, and the tiredness is hard in the beginning as well. You do have to get used to prepping food differently but, this is all worth adding 10 years to my life. Down 17 lbs since surgery on the 12th.

Pain at 3 weeks post op

I agree it can’t hurt to run it by your team. It should be getting a little better day by day. To feel the same as day one at three weeks out I would make sure to tell them that.

Lucky you for only getting a 10 day liquid diet (jealous some 😂). My anxiety kicked in during my last check in when they told me they were submitting everything to insurance 😩 I think it’s more so of a good and anxious nerve than fear. I’m anticipating the outcome more than anything. I have scheduled an appointment with my therapist 1 week before surgery for extra support with my anxiety. What are you mostly nervous about?

Yaaayyy!!! I have to start the liquid diet September 28th but I have to do a 3 week liquid diet. How long is yours? I know some people are only doing 2 weeks.

    September surgery buddies!!

Well said!! I wasn’t expecting that feeling and I spent most of my first week post op wondering wtf did I just do?? Everyday I was annoyed about it and it took a lot of self-talk and reassurance to get through it!

    September surgery buddies!!

58 here. As you know, the older we get, the longer it takes to heal. This is major surgery, so give yourself some grace and just know it's going to take a while before you feel good. I also told my wife to expect that I'm going to have buyers remorse (at least early on), so her job is to remind me why I did it. As you pointed out, the liquid portion of the diet can be challenging. The vitamin regimen isn't that big a deal for me. A bigger challenge right now is just how hard it is to take all my meds. I admit I'm on a lot of medications, but it's going to take me 2.5-3 hours a day to take everything. That should get better soon, at least I hope. I should be able to drop some of the meds, and it should get easier to take more at once like I used to.
  9. I did not have my gallbadder out but had what my surgeon called "3 surgeries at once" I have a MAJOR hernia fixed, had bypass and had "scraping and trimming" of my esophagus to fix extensive damage from GERD.
  10. Well I am almost 2 weeks post op and full for me is a pain that starts after I take a bite. Not like a searing just like a cramp that moves across my stomach. Or a hiccup!

    September surgery buddies!!

Welcome! This site is super helpful. I’m 53 so right there with you! Take the week off of work. Trust me on this. I was foolish and tried to go back on day 5 post op and it was no bueno. Rest, sip tiny sips of fluid and rest some more. Post-op eating has not been so bad. Liquid & pureed (currently mine) phases are a definite drag but doable. I bought a sample pack of Celebration brand vitamins and I’m pleasantly surprised at how easy they are to work into the day. Based on some other posters, Protein20 water is a real godsend. I like the Coconut flavor over ice. I’ve told very few people but interestingly enough, it was my doctor that recommended my surgery and two other medical professionals that have championed the decision. Everyone must walk their own path but it can’t be easy having someone special to you not easily on board. Good luck with your conversations, I wish you the very best.

    October 2022 surgery support

Hello everyone! My gastric bypass is scheduled for 10th of October. I have been on a waiting list since 15th of February 2021. I got all pre op check ups done last year, but had final check up before surgery 2 weeks ago (nutritionist, anesthesiologist and bloodwork). All was in place. But then my bloodwork came back really bad. I have developed anemia and its severe enough they called my in to have IV transfusion plus taking extra iron supplements with my pre op vitamins. Have new blood draw scheduled on 4th, so hope things improve enough to get approved. My BMI is 50 so already had to start my liver shrinking pre-op diet, 3 week before surgery.

    August surgery buddies!

I think I'm going to just weigh myself once a month, if that. I can't go through this every week. I've been feeling so energetic and fabulous this week, and this weigh in has just crushed me. I really thought I mentally prepared myself for disappointing results, but it's clear I haven't. My poor husband!
  14. Hi, First of all , am so happy I found this site. I think it will be more than a little helpful! I am 62 yrs old so anyone my age that is going through or has gone through this I would appreciate any tips you could give. I am looking forward to having energy again and just being able to be healthy. This all started because I have to have my gall bladder removed and they are going to do the Bypass at the same time. I guess I am more nervous about taking all the vitamins and the liquid portion of the diet. I am finishing up some appointments next week. I am hoping I can do an at home sleep apnea test instead of going in. I still work and wondering about how much time I will need to recover. I have only told a few close friends and close family but I have'nt told my daughter who is an RN and not a fan of WLS. I am hoping it will not be a difficult conversation. Thanks again for all the good information! Good luck on your journeys.

    August surgery buddies!

I know what you mean. My weight loss has been very slow and I've stalled for 2 weeks. I'm finally losing again, but at a rate of about 1 to 2 lbs a week. I've only lost a total of 15 lbs since my surgery almost 6 weeks ago and 8 of it was in the first week after surgery when I could barely get liquids in. I guess 1 to 2 lbs a week is normal, but I had hoped for the rapid weight loss that I kept seeing during my Google searches for the surgery.

    August surgery buddies!

I think we have all been there. Stalls are really normal the first month. I spent most of my first month in a stall and it had me doubting everything. But then it broke and I started losing. As long as the numbers are going down... that is all that matters.
  17. I wasn't tired the first couple of weeks, but the last week I have been exhausted.

    August surgery buddies!

Well, today was my 1 month weigh in. I was at 297.5. I don't actually know my day of surgery weight, they didn't weigh me and I didn't have a scale. I was 325 a week after I started my 3 week pre-op liquid diet. 310 one week after surgery. So 27.5 lbs lost since August 6. I've always hated the scale, my whole life losing weight has been very slow, no matter what. I'm always the most compliant dieter, weigh and measure everything. Drink lots of plain water, exercise a lot. I'd hoped maybe getting bypass would change that. Guess not. Once again I'm doing absolutely everything perfectly, been in touch with my nutritionist frequently to share my food diary and he says I'm on track. I know it's a marathon not a sprint, I just stupidly thought/hoped maybe THIS time I wouldn't have to fight every pound off so hard. I swore I wasn't going to get upset after crying all day after my week 1 weigh in, but here I sit just a puddle. I did still go for my morning 35 minute walk, I'm swimming this afternoon for 30 minutes and I'll walk again for 30 minutes later tonight. All my food is planned and prepped for the day. It's all I can do. ARGHHH!!!!!!!!!!
  19. I think it took about eight weeks for it to completely lift, but it got a little better every week until it was completely gone (in other words, you won't feel this tired for the whole eight weeks (or however long it takes for you)). It'll gradually get better.
  20. Fluctuation is normal that early out. Try to weigh yourself less. It is not physically possible to eat enough to gain 6 lbs in a week, especially after WLS. You just can't eat enough to do it. Just stick to your plan and you will see the weight fall off. Good luck!

    **Weight REGAIN**

You are so not alone. This is a tough lifestyle change- for the better. You've done great, know you can achieve your goals and may have stalls,setbacks,... but get back up and reassess what you're doing differently. I'm not perfect no one is and we have to keep trying to get better everyday. My fav snack of chips is really improving because I try substituting things that occupy my mind and body,ie doing my hair, nails, long leisurely soaks, exercise,... sometimes it doesn't work, but I've stopped beating myself up because of the accomplishments I have made. This forum is great with great ppl. So I would suggest to keep reaching out here, find a pcp, social wkr., or someone in your surrounding community with experience to assist you in meeting your goals. You can do it, I can do it and we will meet and surpass our goal(s) and move on to the next thing because it's called living our best life! Blessings ❤

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Scheduled for my sleeve surgery on November 2nd. Final dietician appt in a couple of weeks and then a 3 days liquid diet prior to surgery. Nervous but I think it's long overdue. Haven't had many issues losing substantial weight, it's the keeping it off part that is tough. I think this is the tool that is needed to help me do so.
  23. I am not tracking calories right now as I just started pureed a week ago and I can barely eat 2 oz a day twice a day. But it can't hurt to start tracking. Also, I still struggle to get all of my water in but am working on it. Will definitely be talking to my doctor and dietician.
  24. So I’m a newbie and my surgery is scheduled for next week on 9/27 and I’m wondering what the veterans recommend for activities to do with your partner after surgery. Date nights for us would usually be dinners, movies, or bar trivia. Movies I see how that can be adjusted by not eating bad stuff. But what kinds of things have you guys found to replace old habits/hobbies that revolved around food and/or alcohol?
  25. Maybe take a break from the scale for a bit and just focus on meal prep and exercise when you can. I know easier said than done. I am looking at the scale a lot too. Our bodies need healing time, even after a revision. I heard week 3 is always for most people a stall. Look in a month and see.
