My taste buds are weird now LOL

The change in your taste buds can be really weird. Things you loved suddenly taste disgusting. I was eating smoked salmon for a couple of weeks then one day it was like🤮. And I couldn’t face the vegetables I always ate. Thankfully the tummy turning aspect it is only temporary. Enjoy embracing new flavours cause that new enjoyment will last. Oh & be glad your sense of smell hasn’t gone crazy either. That can make walking through malls, eating out & cooking at home miserable.

Pureed Egg Salad (Keeping Me Sane)

So I can't stand light mayo or light salad dressings and I'm not sure I'll be a fan of Greek yogurt in its place. I get to start week 3 tomorrow and I'm so dang excited becuase I plan to make egg salad (I raise backyard chickens so can't wait to finally get back to eating their butt nuggets! 🤣), chicken salad, and tuna salad and I was planning on using regular mayo. My question as a new post bariatric patient is future plans with this eating lifestyle. My nutritionist said I won't be eating carbs for a while and even when I do start to introduce them, she said a lot of bariatric patients don't tolerate much of them. I was thinking low carb would be best for me as I have done it before but how would that work if I need to do low fat too? I've done keto before and to me, it's sooo much easier than low fat so I'm curious what others are doing successfully. Is there a way to find a happy medium between low carb and low fat?

I see you said WakeMed. Raleigh area of NC? I only ask because I'm in Eastern NC on the coast but am from Winston-Salem! I've been a NC girl my whole life with the exception of two years when I was out in Colorado. So happy you are doing well! I'm getting ready to start week 3 post OP and I can WAIT to make my chicken salad and egg salad in puree form. Other than some issues with gassiness off and on, and lower energy, I am doing awesome too and am sooooo glad I finally, after two years of my primary care physician recommending it, had the surgery! Now it's all about getting healthy and active again! Hoping some of the medications I was taking for scary stuff will eventually be weened! Also hoping my hypothyroidism takes a back seat in the near future. Hehe!

    Low BMI Gastric Sleeve story

Hi There so glad to hear your journey has gone well. I am 5'5 and 209 pounds but started at 227 pounds. I have just started my second week of Pre-op diet and surgery is on 6/30/22. I am so confused and scared to lose too much weight after surgery. I would love to get to 140-150 pounds but feel any more than that would be too much. I am going back and forth in my head if this is even the right thing to do. I do not have a thyroid due to cancer and this is what has caused me to gain all this weight. I will be having my surgery in Palm Springs.

Post Op Return to work question

I am older, and while getting over the surgery was surprisingly easy, your body has been through a shock. You will get tired more easily, and "your nerves" as my mother used to say, may take a while as well. Look around the boards here. You will see people stressing over what some may consider as minor stuff...it isn't minor to them, but you may burst into tears over nothing. Take the time off. You will need it more than you may think. And there will always be those that will be cleaning house, baking a cake and cutting the grass the next week, putting us all to shame, lol..
  8. I'd take the loose skin any day of the week over weighing 373 lbs again. ANY FRICKIN' DAY!! However, mine did drive me nuts after awhile (it was easy to hide, but *I* knew it was there...), so I had it removed. Poof! Gone.

Post Op Return to work question

I had surgery Tuesday and was back to work Monday. I also work from home at a very idle desk job. By then I had very little pain or discomfort, but I was extremely tired. I had to take frequent breaks to rest, and took a nap after work every single day for at least the first week, maybe even a little longer. If your schedule/work load allows for a good bit of flexibility where you can step away and rest when needed, then you should be fine to go back pretty quickly. But if you have to keep a more rigid schedule, I would suggest taking a few extra days. And, as others have mentioned, those first few weeks getting in your fluids and protein will be a full time job, so make sure you have the mental capacity to focus on that.
  10. I have a "mostly" desk job, that could easily be made a 100% desk job. I took 4 weeks off but went back @ 3 weeks part time, then by week 5 I was back to working normal hours at my normal efficiency but by the end of the day I was more tired than normal. With that being said, by day 4/5 post op I was able to do just about anything except walk very long distances. I could bend, sit, lay, stand. I was doing small things around the house, going for short walks. Also, being lazy and doing nothing. So, based on my experience I could probably work from home strictly on the computer after a week post op. Everyone is different though, just listen to your body and do what you can. My employer bends over backwards for me and basically let me come back at my own pace. Maybe you could try it out for a day or 2 and then if needed take a few more days off and try again? If your employer would be willing to work with you in such a manor.

Post Op Return to work question

I work a desk job, and wound up taking 2 weeks off fully, and another week of half days. While the job is not strenuous physically, it is mentally taxing and I would have struggled taking on a full load immediately. I would not underestimate how physically taxing surgery can be on the body, while you are healing. I didn't have much pain, but I was physically exhausted and needed daily naps for the first month or so after surgery. You are also eating so little that concentrating on complex tasks can be tough. I will say, keeping to the schedule needed to get all my fluids and protein felt like a full time job the first few weeks, and it did actually get tougher once I started working FT again, even from home. For example, once I got back to work, I had to worry about timing my puree stage snacks and meals with phone calls, etc. I would give yourself some grace. Maybe plan on two weeks off, but discuss with your job that it's possible you may return early - or may need more time. I think imbedding some flexibility into your plans is helpful. I originally planned on 2 weeks off, but was still so tired that the 3rd week I decided to do half days. I'd already prepped by job for the possibility and it made it easy. Honestly, everyone's recovery is different, so it's just smart in general to not count on being back to full strength. And if you are one of those that bounces back easily - great! I'm guessing your job wouldn't say no to you coming back early.

Post Op Return to work question

I took 5 weeks but I have an active job. When I got out of the Hospital, I couldn’t drive for a week. Depending on how your doctor does your discharge instructions, you won’t feel like doing much for at least a week or so. When I was on the liquid diet, I was setting my phone timer every 15 minutes to drink liquids such as protein shakes from a medicine cup. That will take up your whole day. When you get to Puréed it will be more flexible

Congratulations!!!🎉🍾🎈🎊 to you . And best wishes on your journey! my experience has been similar. This is without a doubt one of the best things I have EVER done for myself! fourteen days post op and I feel like I’m 25 years younger (I’m 67). dr. Pilati (WakeMed) ordered my meds 3 weeks prior to surgery. My hospital experience could not have been more amazing! Anti nausea patch, nerve block on both sides of abdomen, non narcotic pain meds one hour prior to surgery: I NEVER needed any pain meds. Nerve block lasted 3 days. No gas, just nausea and I was immediately given a steroid/anti nausea cocktail (decadron) that was a miracle drug. My bp is normally 156/99….in the hospital it was 188/96. This morning at my pcp visit it was 104/65! My bp meds have been halved. I’ve been on them for 22 years since my twins were born…post partum hypertension. I start puréed foods tomorrow. I am perfectly satisfied right now on liquids. I’m not hungry, I am down 23 lbs, I feel fabulous. Right now, I am remembering how little food mattered to me most of my life and I am ecstatic. I wish that everyone could have the same experience I’m having. this is life changing.

    Stall and brain

I am in the same boat - coming up on 7 months, and I've lost about a pound and a half in the last 30 days. My weight goes down, then the next week it goes up (sometimes for two weeks!) then back down to where I was before or maybe a tiny bit lower - its a slog and I'm not sure what to do. Very frustrating! I know to expect a slowdown, and my bariatric nurse warned me a lot of people stall around 200 lbs which is where I am. Its encouraging to hear its common to stall for up to several weeks, just frustrating. I guess hang in there? I'm going to reach out to my team, too, to see if there's anything I need to tweak.

    No fluid issues?

It’s an individual thing. You may only be able to sip for months or you may be able to chug liquids in a few weeks. Neither is right or wrong. Just for the first couple of months we usually are advised to sip slowly to support & not strain our healing tummy & digestive systems. Follow the advice from your surgeon & you’ll be fine. You’ll get to what your body is comfortable with in your own time.

    Weight gain & Health Issues

As @catwoman7 said some of those changes you mentioned are just temporary. Like hair loss usually persists for about 3 months & your hormones settle once you’ve lost most of your weight (oestrogen is stored in fat so as you lose all the excess oestrogen is released into blood stream). Large weight regain can occur because of complacency & people slipping back into old eating habits. It can occur because how they were eating wasn’t sustainable &/or was too restrictive. It didn’t allow them to live their life as they wanted & hindered them doing what they enjoyed. Or they didn’t do the head work to understand & learn to manage their old eating behaviours & what drove them to eat. All things the surgery doesn’t do anything about. But it does give you the time to explore these factors. Also remember the average weight loss at about the three year mark is 60% of the weight that had to be lost. This can include the bounce back ‘resettling’ weight gain, complacency & adjusting to a more flexible eating plan. Or it could just be the weight your body is happier at. Sure there is always a chance to develop an issue that has to be monitored but it’s rare. Comparatively, there are very few complications from weight loss surgery. Some of the issues may not have anything to do with the surgery. I have a protein malabsorption issue. Not from my 3 yr old sleeve but from my gall being removed last year. (Malabsorption issues are very rare with sleeve.) I have low BP. I had a genetic predisposition before surgery now it’s all the time because of my lower weight not the surgery. Gerd is probably the highest risk after sleeve - about 15-20% I believe. But it can be managed or treated by a revision to bypass. Some issues may be revealed because you likely are being monitored medically more closely now then before or your weight & associated comorbidities may have been masking what were pre existing conditions. You’ll likely read & hear about people with problems because they they post to seek help & support. They don’t often post about what the cause was or the remedy. In comparison, people tend not to post or talk about their successes. I know many people who’ve had the surgery. No one has experienced long term or developed new issues because of the surgery. A couple regained most of their weight because they went back to their old eating habits. Certainly the benefits far outweigh any temporary side effects or the very rare problem.

    Pain

I had that for about 2 weeks. My stomach seemed to be extra sensitive to anything I drank. I had hoped after the 1st week it would feel better, but nope. It was literally day 15 or so before I stopped having pain every time I drank anything.

    Pain

It could be little post surgical muscle spasms when you swallow. Everything is still a bit sensitive. It takes weeks to heal & recover. Make sure you’re sipping not gulping & leaving time between each sip. Cold drinks are often a culprit too so try room temperature liquids or warm/hot (many of us find warm more soothing). Eventually you may be able to drink larger amounts, closer together & drink cold again but when, how much & how often is an individual thing. Me, I can’t do more than two large mouthfuls in a row after all this time but others can chug. Just one of those things.

    9 Days Post Op

You won’t have messed up so you can breath about that. I do agree with the suggestion to check your portion size recommendations. Mine was 1/4 -1/3 cup to begin from purée. Liquids stage was just sip your shake or soup ‘meal’ until finished. Portion size of those were a cup of but I’d dilute them to double & would take a couple of hours to drink. All adds to your fluid goal so all good. If you weren’t given portion size recommendations, ask for some. Nerves are cut during surgery so your signals aren’t working & then they may not work the same which is one of the reasons portion control is important. Plus liquids go through your body more quickly so your tummy is emptying more quickly than you getting ‘full’. Even when your nerves have healed, you’ve recovered & are eating solid food, you may not feel full or feel your restriction. The actually goal should not be to eat until you are full or feel the restriction but eat until you’ve had enough. Three years out I still ask myself do I need the next bite or just want it. Big difference. I still eat slowly too: 30-60mins depending upon what I’m eating (of course I’m eating more then you are at the moment). It takes me about 50mins to eat a 6oz/1cup yoghurt. But surgeons have different recommendations on time frame & you’ll discover what works best for you. I still also take small bites. A teaspoon helps to modify the size of your bite & keep them small. Then, put your spoon down between bites & wait a couple of minutes before your next bite. There are a lot of new things to learn but you’ll get there. Also what worked for your brother may not work for you. All the best.

    Post Op changes

What sort of changes are you referring to? Dietary, taste, constipation/diarrhoea, tiredness, activity, recovery, food intolerances, stalls, hair loss, etc.?? It’s good to be aware of possibilities but you can’t predict what will happen to you. Generally a lot of things that change are temporary or are easy to modify your behaviours to manage the changes. Some may be frustrating or require support from your medical team & dietician. Some changes will become permanent like dietary choices, activity, etc. Don’t let fear hold you back. The benefits are amazing.

    blood pressure changes

Your BP is often higher when you see the doctor. Apparently they attribute it to a conscious or subconscious stress reaction. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I started keeping a record of my at home BP readings to show my GP but then forgot to take it 🙄. My readings are usually 15-20 points higher at the surgery than at home. Funny thing is I’ve been seeing her for more than 20yrs, taught her daughter, she’s very supportive & we get on really well but my BP still goes up. I blame the traffic I have to battle to get to the appointment. 😁 And yes your BP will be up & down at home too depending upon what you’ve been doing, time of day, if your hydrated, etc. I always record the time & add what I’ve been doing against the reading. Sometimes it’s helpful to take it at the same time three times a day. Congrats to everyone who have been able to reduce or drop their meds. 🎉

4 months out and stalled all month!

I seem to be in a cycle of losing and gaining the same 3 lbs. I keep going in between 250 and 248. I am also about 4 months post op. Is a 4 month stall normal? I thought I broke 250 but it goes in between those 3 numbers probably for 3 weeks now I think or more idk... I'm going to be honest I'm not meeting my protein goals or hydration goals. Trying very hard with water but protein I am.not getting enough. I am still in a major calorie deficit and started vigorous exercise recently. I'm frustrated but all I can do is stay off the scale, stay in my deficit and keep working to reach my protein and water goal. Uhh but it is the most frustrating thing ever. I want to get to 200 so badly. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi surgery twin! I had my surgery the same day and finally advanced to full liquids from clear liquids this week. I feel a little more human but I am having those cravings as well! My dr’s plan has me able to eat peanut butter next week, I hope you are able to have some soon too!

    Surgery day questions--Assistance please.

What I learned on this forum. Everyone has their own experience. You will have your own. I don’t think anyone is alike at all. My surgery took forever. My family was seriously worry. It started at 130pm and got to recovery at 830pm. I stayed In the hospital for 3 days. My doctor came and saw me. I was very well taken care of. I arrived to the hospital like 1030am. Surgery was scheduled at 12pm. I arrived and had to register and check in. Then they had me strip naked and wear hospital robe and put all my stuff away. Struggle at the hospital is making that first urination. I just couldn’t urine laying in bed. I had to use the bathroom. Once I did I was up every 2 hours using the bathroom. I had bunch of machines on me. So it was annoying. Being home so far is putting eating a drinking in order and I’m schedule. I’m still struggling with it. I took two weeks off and I will than be working from home for a month. I will be going into the office afterwards. I packed my phone charger and a change of comfy clothes. Loose clothing you want nothing tight on when u leave to go home. Hope this helps but again you will have your own story and experience best of luck.
