  1. Prayer request. ellie123, send us a message that she was in extreme pain, last night she had to go to the ER, where they run a CT scan and told her she had a Partial obstruction and internal swelling. They gave her morphine and pain never stop. Today she is still in extreme pain, nauseous and vomiting. She was admitted at the Bariatric Hospital for tonight. I believe in the power of prayers, please join me in praying for her during the day asking God for healing and wisdom to drs so they can help her.

    Assumptions

Some are not right, I am not Obese because I am Lazy, Uncaring or Have never tried. At my weight I have walked until my ankles weakened, my dependant edema flared again, I have tried running until I was out of breath, have even subluxed joints trying to,love weights as I have mild-to- moderate case of Ehlors-Danlos a connective tissue disease, Evan if I reduce my weight, which my upcoming RnY on Wednesday September 5th will assist, that will always be,present. My arthritis and breath shortness will diminish but I will still, retain joint deformities, lungs that will never be 100%, I will still retain my slight cardiac deformity but it should not progress further. My 2 artificial knees will not regenerate, the calluses and slight deformities from past fractures will still be there. But guess what, the quality of my,life WILL IMPROVE, although my personal chassis will retain dings , deformities and missing paint, with minimal chug-chug it will still serve to get,my where I am going. And I am grateful for Bariatric Surgery , it keeps me from being smashed into a cube of metal in a Trash Compactor and this Little Engine that Could can keep going on her merry way. And if my headlights shining light someone else's way, what a Wonderful Thing that shall be!

    really not losing weight rapidly

“I thought the weight would be flying off.” Who told you that? To be frank, your expectation is wrong. Everyone loses at a different rate and for most of us it happens in a stair step fashion; meaning, lose some, plateau for a bit, then lose some more. You’re only 3 weeks out. The first few weeks are impacted by all the fluids that were pumped into your body during surgery, which is why many programs recommend staying off the scale during the first month or so. And many experience a stall 3-4 weeks post-op that can last 1-3 weeks. During this period, keep the faith and continue to follow your surgeon’s plan faithfully. Why are you drinking wine already? Does your bariatric surgeon condone imbibing so soon post-op? The fact that you’re rationalizing it because you’re exercising is concerning. The last thing you want to do is eat or drink additional calories because you’ve worked out, because in almost all cases, people overestimate how many calories they’ve actually burned off. What are you eating? Please provide your total calories and examples of what you eat for each meal so we can provide feedback /suggestions. Weight loss happens in the kitchen, not the gym.

Knee surgery 6 months after VSG

I guess my questions to the bariatric surgeon would be - is it advisable to have this type of surgery 6 months out from vsg? How do I cope with recovering and meet all my nutritional needs for it? Can you test me for any deficiencies prior to knee surgery to make sure I can sustain another surgery so soon? You know how TKR recovery goes, physical therapy, etc. I found the bone healing pain to be excruciating from TKR.
  11. I’m now 13 months post successful gastric bypass surgery. What can I do to eliminate foul gas? Family are fed up and I’m nervous about dating (I’m divorced ) a,loud flatulence b, smelly & loud flatulence. I have been taking probiotics, 1st brand was unsuccessful and 2nd brand has made difference but not cured the problem. I know in the States you can buy Devrom, but it’s unavailable in England at the moment plus the cost is prohibitive! Any suggestions?

Knee surgery 6 months after VSG

I know you'll do this, but talk with your bariatric surgeon and RD about this and let them help you find the solution. Then get your orthopedist involved with them. I'd think that you might need to get in 80-100g of protein (maybe) and you'll be good to go. You have probably 14-20lbs of fat that can fuel you on those 2000 calorie needs if you're at least getting lots of protein and healthy fats for healing. Having said that, you can do a lot of "calorie damage" by adding in 2tbsp of peanut or almond butter per day + 1 avocado + lean protein. Just sayin... Hope you don't have to have the biggest of the surgeries!!!

    Self-Pay with a starting BMI of 35

My starting BMI was 35.5. no co morbidities, but a family history that concerned me. I self paid through Blossom Bariatric. Three weeks from first appointment to surgery. I did have a full day where I met with a counselor and nutritionist, and had to show a history of previous attempts to lose weight. Perhaps the wait is longer without that history. I lost 40 lbs in the first 3 months. I was very strict in observing my diet and exercise routine. I've been less careful since (I'm 8 months out now) and have only lost an additional 10 pounds. I'd like to lose at least 15 more, and know that would be easily accomplished with strict adherence to diet and exercise.

    Regrets

This is a normal feeling! Most people have an emotional relationship with food. We eat when we’re sad, , when we’re bored, when we’re happy, when we’re celebrating with friends and spending time with family... and the surgery temporarily prohibits us from doing those things and from using food to cope. It is a struggle! But it does get better... and if it doesn’t get better, there are therapists that can help you work through it. I’m currently reading this book: The Emotional First Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery, Second Edition https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0054RXXS0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fp-IBb93VX555 I’ve found it to be helpful for me in dealing with some of the emotions that come post surgery.
  18. I am so glad I found this group! It is nice to know I am not alone. I started my journey in January 2018 at 295 lbs after trying to lose weight so I could have a right total hip replacement. I had gone to my PCP in July 2017 for my yearly physical and mentioned to him about my hip hurting. It took awhile for me to mention it because I thought it was because I was so fat and my inner voice kept telling me to "suck it up, this is the price you pay for eating the way you do" (I can still hear that in my head in my mother's voice). He sent me for an x-ray, then immediately to an orthopedic surgeon. He didn't sugar coat anything. I had stage 4 osteoarthritis in my right hip, needed a replacement. and the 80 year old man in the room next to me had better hips than I do at age 48. My ortho refused to do surgery and instead wanted me to do hip injections and lose weight. I got my first injection on Tuesday August 22, and drove with friends from Michigan to Philly on Wednesday to participate in the Susan. G. Komen 3 day 60 mile walk. On Thursday we walked around downtown and began the walk on Friday. By Sunday, we had walked over 70 miles in 4 days. My second injection came the Monday after Thanksgiving. What a fun holiday that was! I wasn't allowed to take my beloved Aleeve and Tylenol was not much help. I drank Scotch to supplement, much to my mother's dismay but my husband's amusement. That injection was enough to get me through hosting 40 people for Christmas at our house and going to New Orleans in February (What a fun town!). I went to a WLS consultation with my husband in January. We listened as the surgeon gave his speech where he talked about how people who more to lose have little or no chance to successfully keep any weight loss off because of our bodies and I immediately began to bawl. You mean my mother was wrong? I didn't need more willpower? Or someone to slap all the food out of my hands? Or I wasn't walking enough? (For the 3Day I walked a total of 600 miles in 24 weeks which averages out to 25 miles a week). My husband was very supportive, especially with drowning out that voice. So I began my 6 month physician monitored diet, which my PCP was not a fan of. My third injection came in March and lasted one week while we were in Vegas for March Madness. When we came home, I called my ortho and he wanted to see me immediately. He decided that since I was pursuing WLS that he would do the surgery. I was bone on bone and living on Aleeve and the occasional Scotch if I had a bad day at work. The worst was the two weeks before surgery when I couldn't have Aleeve and we went to Vegas again (The trip was already paid for). I couldn't get comfortable in any position - chair, stool, walking, standing, or laying in bed. Surgery was on May 29th and I had instant relief in my hip. No more bone achingness that felt like someone was sawing off my leg. I did really well with physical therapy and ortho was pleased. We are keeping an eye on my left hip, that is at Stage 2. I was in for a big surprise though. I thought now that my hip is brand new, I will be back to walking everyday and getting on with my life. On May 29th I weighed 316. I have found that the rest of my joints and back are now protesting all this extra weight. I have lost my stamina and I am so frustrated with the state of my house and gardens. Yes the husband and adult kids clean up after themselves but they don't do the deep cleaning that needs to be done. The good thing is my PCP is much more understanding and knowledgeable about bariatric surgery because of my journey. He has seen me lose weight the first 2 months and slowly gain it do to my loss of mobility. Well that is my motivation story, I have my surgery on Wednesday, September 5th and it can't come soon enough. I am trying to prepare myself mentally and emotionally for this and have been watching lots of Dr. Voung videos. How do others deal with the voices that tell you that you can't do this, or make you ashamed of ever getting this size?

    Vitamins and Supplements

yes and that's one reason why I decided to take all of my multi vitamin at once. Those Bariatric Advantage are no joke. The first time I took them, it was on an empty stomach and I'll never make that mistake again. I eat lunch and then finish with a sip of water and 3 capsules. Then, I set a 2 hour timer for my calcium. My other doses of calcium are when I wake up and when I go to bed.
  22. I am curious to know what vitamins and supplements everyone is taking. I'm currently taking: Bariatric Advantage Ultra Multivitamin w. Iron (3 pills per day and I take them all at the same time) Celebrate Calcium PLUS 500 Chewable 1 tablet 3 times daily Natrol Biotin 5000mcg 1xdaily I will be adding Nature's Bounty Probiotic 10 as soon as I finish my antibiotics. I need to add a B complex (I think) and for sure B12. I saw somewhere not to start B12 until month 3. Has anyone else heard this? I also need to add 500-700 mg daily of Omega 3 Fatty Acids. I'm not sure which one to get there are so many different choices.
  23. Bariatric Master nailed it. one more thing though, just remember to go easy on yourself over the next few days. youre going to experience all sorts of strange bodily sensations and youll simply need to remenber "im post surgery. this is normal and expected," for the most part. of course when in doubt reach out to your surgeons office, but you get my drift. goodluck
  24. First, are you diabetics? I think if your BMI is over 30 and you are diabetic you qualify for the surgery. The American Diabetic Association's 1st recommendation is bariatric surgery in order to avoid all the disease and disability that diabetes and excess weight. Have you seen a surgeon yet? If not make an appointment now. He/she will be more inclined to help you I changed PCP because he could not deal with my multiple problems. He wanted 1 diagnosis that was stable and only took 2minutes.. Where I had way to many problems to deal with in his 2minute schedule. I dumped him and found a doctor who saw me the person and not a 2minute office visit.
  25. I’m 41, and afraid to tell my mom I’m having bariatric surgery. She won’t understand, and she’ll be unpleasant about it. She’s always been tiny, thinks being overweight is just a lack of willpower, that fat people are just weak. But I’m so tired of fighting by myself. She put me on my first diet when I was 10. For the better part of 30 years, it’s been one diet after another. I know it’s not just willpower, and I know that even for the willpower part of the equation, I’m not magically going to turn into someone I’ve never been. I had the idea that I just wouldn’t say anything, but having a better understanding of the changes ahead, that’s not going to be an option. So I know I have to tell her, and I’m dreading it.
