Hello everyone I have been lurking around reading multiple post that have been EXTREMELY insightful. I have started taking notes in order to make sure I don't forget anything. I don't have a date for my sleeve as of yet but I am hoping around July or August. I CANT WAIT !!!! I am already buying clothes a lil to snug and calling them my TRANSFORMATION OUTFITS.......(yea I am a shopaholic).......... My biggest fear is the sagging loose skin that alot of people speak of. My doctor told me that it is a 50 -50 chance of having or not having it. I would hate to go this transformation and be unhappy with the end results because of my loose skin........ I have been reading a lot about hair loss and that doesn't worry me that much cause I am a true certified WIGGY !!! I was considering getting micros but after reading about the possible hair loss issues I may just stick with my wigs to avoid any other stress to my hair. I have started dabbling in drinking some protein shakes and still haven't found none that I really like. My nutritionist suggested EAS protein shakes and they are ok but I still be hungry afterwards. I thought I was doing good by drinking those Special K shakes but nutritionist nipped those in the bud real quick.( lol they were good too) I would love to know if there are any people in the Columbia SC area on here that i could buddy up with. Last question or issue for now.....I am a very social person that often go out and was wondering is drinking alcohol totally 100% off limits with the sleeve ???

Vanna - I don't think some people will ever understand the reasons that made this surgery a necessity in our lives. These folks also probably think that if you have a drug or alcohol addiction that you are week and just need to get your shit together. Forget about them, they are not you and they are not the ones that support you in helping you to make a positive change in your life. We will run across these yahoos throughout our lives and we just need to let them be crazy all by themselves! Stand strong. BTW- I'm siting on exam table waiting for staples to come out! I am down 30 lbs from SW! Vanna - you have lots of support from our Losers Bench! -
discomfort when swallowing
Baba Wawa replied to mothering9's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you're not on solids and experiencing pain and difficulty swallowing you need to discuss this with your doctor. Personally, I would go back to liquids for a day or two and try again. Typically whenever I go in to the band doctor, I'm asked a series of questions: 1) do you find yourself looking for food during the day? 2) how much food are you eating at each meal? Is it dense Protein with veggies? 3) are you satisfied for at least 4 hours? 4) are you having any difficulty when eating, pain or other problems. 5) are you drinking 64 oz + per day, not drinking with meals or for 30 min after? 6) are you exercising? 7) are you consuming any alcohol? 8) what medications are you taking, including OTC, supplements and Rx? I don't know why 8 turned into an emoticon, lol! This helps them to determine if you need a fill or perhaps in the case of #4, if you are having a problem that a fill will only make worse. Some people go a year or more without a fill and do very well. Please post next week after your dr appt and let us know how it went -
My Suggestion-Stop The Obsessing. Rules Are Meant To Be Broken

1. Pussification pussification(noun): the state in which a society becomes less and less tough. This noun's originator is the famous comedian George Carlin. "We are undergoing a pussification of our entire society." 2. Pussification The state of mind that a man undergoes when he has lost any control that he ever had in a relationship with a woman. The point in a relationship where a man becomes his mates personal b***h. Once pussification takes over the man will spend every waking minute thinking of ways to please his mate. "Hey Mike, wanna grab a beer after work?" "Thanks guys, but I can't, I have to hurry home to give the cat a bath so that I'll have time to watch Seventh Heaven with the princess" "Holy ****!! Mike!! You've got pussification. We need to get alcohol in you right away" 3. Pussification Taken from a George Carlin bit, referring to the reversal of roles and attitudes specifically of the American male due to being overly "politically correct." Using soft language and avoiding confrontation and critisizm has resulted in the complete pussification of the american youth, as manifested by "emo", and "cyberbullying" emo pussification wuss sissy *****-whipped 4. Pussification To become a *****, wus, coward, whimp etc. We are witnesses to the mass pussification of males as a result of the fload of female hormones in our water from the consumer use of the birth control pill. Draft Dogers? That's pussification straight up! -
In the early stages of pregnancy there is not a lot of weight gain. Most women can stay in normal clothes until after the first trimester. If the pregnancy tests are coming out negative, you are probably not pregnant . Worrying about being pregnant can make your period not come. I would advise just relaxing and waiting to see if you get your period in the next week or two. During that time don't drink alcohol or smoke. If you are pregnant, the waiting doesn't hurt anything. You may be stalled in weight loss because you are in a happy relationship. When I met my husband (preband) I gained 20 pounds in a very short time. And absolutely use some form of birth control. Babies need to be planned.

I don't think there are a lot more people with regrets. I think they are speaking up more because one got the nerve to really speak out. And we don't hear from the ones that have regained all their weight or never got remotely close to goal and quit coming here. IMO, those with regrets should speak out so others have an idea of issues they may need to work on pre-op or post-op. When I first starting reading VST, Tiffy-kins was on here all the time. She had a terrible post-op experience, with a leak and having to get rid of her gallbladder, but I saw she got over those things and I thought, well if that happens to me, I can get over it too. I also read threads about people not getting to goal and those that did get to goal so I knew what I had to do if I wanted to get to goal and stay there. And I read the threads about people who became addicted to alcohol or drugs. After I started drinking again when I got close to goal, I set a limit on how often and how much I drink to avoid those issues. I think we all have issues with food or we wouldn't have got overweight to start with. And it's important to work on those issues because no matter how tight the restriction, at some point in the future, enough capacity for weight regain will return. Of course, that's just my opinion. Your mileage may vary. Lynda

I had a little trouble figuring out correct forum to place this topic so it goes here in "Rant and Raves" because it is a bit of a rave. My MIL was an RN before retirement and likes to keep up on medical studies. She and I were talking about (WLS (VSG) last night and she said WLS (VSG) changes the DNA. My first response was "what....?" and then " how is this possible?" She explained that there was a medical study done in Iceland where they said WLS (VSG) changes the genetic coding in a person's DNA such that the genes responsible for a predisposition of obesity are no longer present in future generations (read: children). Wow, that is powerful! Effectively it means you can expect to have beautiful and athletic children if WLS (VSG) does the same for you. All the genetic precursors like ineffective BMR are effectively reprogrammed. Now I am wondering if the results of this medical study also apply to alcohol, drugs and other addictive predispositions that are passed through DNA.

Laura, Thanks so much for this thought-provoking thread. I am a food addict with alcohol/drug/food addiction family genetics and a lifetime of addictive "experience". The first five weeks after VSG surgery were heaven (no desire to eat at all!), but now my stomach has healed, the honeymoon is over, and I am grappling with my new reality. The sleeve is a great tool ...but the addiction battle continues and it is hitting me pretty hard right now. I want to be CURED, dammit!! It really helps to know that others are struggling and succeeding. I have this little voice that is whispering "You can't do this...you will fail". Thanks to all the VSTers who are helping me to believe that I don't have to be perfect, that I can pick myself up and keep going forward, and that I can change.

Did you have second thoughts?
buplee replied to ladylaura's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I said the same thing on another thread where someone was regretting surgery because she could not head huge amounts of unhealthy food. Most of us had to go through one visit to a psychologist to get our psych clearance. Personally I do not feel that is sufficient. I went through several months to deal with my guilt and feelings of failure for making the decision to have surgery and dealing with food issues. I come from a southern family and my wife's family is from the Caribbean, and both cultures cultures have a heavy focus on food. I needed to learn that going out socially does not mean I have to consume huge amounts of good and alcohol to be social. I also did not have to clean my plate to show I enjoyed the meal as I had been taught growing up. I would highly suggest anyone serious about the surgery go through a few sessions of therapy to come to grips with our unhealthy obsession with food. -
My surgery was jan 28 and I'm scared to drink alcohol, I'm waiting until At least 6 months. Enjoy your drink if you decide to have one!

I'm meeting up with some of my girlfriends that I haven't seen since college tomorrow. I had surgery on Jan 24th. Can I have a drink?

Congrats on your surgery and I wish you the most success! Are they thinking fibrosis with Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Diesease? I have pretty severe fatty liver and they are going to biopsy mine when they are in there. Weightloss and low-no carb with moderate fat and excercise help improve it a lot.

I had my first drink at 6 months. Doctor and NUT recommended we wait 3 months and to ease into it. Alcohol may affect you differently as a post op. It might be a good idea to drink on occasion or in moderation if you are going to as calories add up fast. For me, 1-2 drinks a month, mainly as a social thing.

My doctor said to wait 6 months before I had any alcohol. But advised against it totally because of the empty calories and the effect on the liver. -
I've only had alcohol on a couple of social occasions.. It hit me fast and made me very flush and uneasy for a minute or two, The interesting thing for me is I felt very buzzed quickly but then that feeling of being buzzed went away went away just as quickly.. I had some red wine and one time a very small glass of Vodka and cranberry and added ice to it all night. I've never had a problem with alcohol, just food, But I will say (as I have said before so please forgive me) that weeks after surgery I was still taking my pain meds every night (same time that I did my best eating too) to feel "better" I started looking forward to my night time dose. I refilled my meds twice I told my husband what I was doing and how I was feeling and we threw the pain meds out. I was never hooked on drugs just food..

This thread has been a great insight, but also a great laugh! I have truly enjoyed the jokes. Speaking of alcohol, I am nervous to have a drink! My surgeon said after 1 month it would be ok. I have a couple weddings coming up, and of course don't want to have one drink and become the life of the party. I understand alcohol effects people differently. What were some of your experiences after the first drink? What do you like to drink since you can't drink soda? My other concern is how many calories that are in liquor. I surely don't want to not be able to eat all day because I choose to have a drink. I will really have to question wether or not it's actually worth it. -
I've been in a stall for three weeks and before hand alcohol made me drop weight. It's weird how different the body takes it. I will wait the two months my dr says

This one scares me! I postponed my surgery because I found out less than 2 weeks before that a relative of a good friend was in the hospital dying of liver failure. She had cross addicted to alcohol after surgery to deal with her problems because she couldn't eat and alcoholism runs in my family so it concerned me. She died at age 32 and left 3 kids behind. = ( -
Help! Struggling to be ready for pre-op diet
winnada replied to mamamareli's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You know... Thinking about it... I feel the EXACT way I did in the few weeks before I had my first child. 3 weeks before she was born I started thinking... 1. I'm not ready 2. What if I'm not good at this 3. How could I give up 'MY LIFE' ... The only way of life I e ever known! Long story short... I would not change my decision to have my daughter in my life ( or my son who followed shortly after ). Life is about choices... Following through on our decisions. I believe that God has lead me to where I am currently, has cleared the path for me ( as the approval process was without any issues- even when I tried to dream some problems up ) and has blessed me with the loving supportive husband, brother, sister. I'm going to take it on! One hour at a time! I've always thought I was an 'displaced alcoholic' - food being my addiction. I'm going to take it hour by hour, which quickly turns in to days, weeks and one day... I will notice its been YEARS! -
My honest opinion? If you're letting her stick around, and you're supporting her, if she's not blood, or wearing your ring, she's out regardless. So you're not together, she knows this, what if she brings another man over? You gonna handle that well? What if you have the chance to hook up with someone, and you tell them "oh my ex lives with me still" boom she'll be gone faster than the road runner man. Plus, the wonderful common law marriage laws and community property laws. Not sure what state you're in but in Texas, she'd have rights to everything in your house and nothing you can do but take her to court. You said she's done nothing wrong, but then you say you can't stop revisiting the past and her "habits" etc. I'll tell you from experience in law enforcement, if her habit is alcohol and drugs, and your little boy is around that, and Mom is a clean person and finds out about it, you'll have more trouble on your hands than it's worth to keep her around.

Their regular protein bars are amazing...like 5 net carbs/20g protein. They are endorsed by Eggface and hungrygirl. Good ingredient list and some have no sugar alcohols at all, for people that have issues with that. Lots of great flavors too...chocolate chip cookie dough is awesome as well as apple pie and others. I got these peanut butter cups but haven't tried them yet either. Hopefully this product means they are branching out into the snack bar world similar to the Atkins snack bars that are more of a sub for candy bars. Anything that helps satisfy our cravings for the bad stuff is great! -
In my opinion, since we lose the ability to consume large amount of food, our minds still don't lose that mentality of mass consumption. In other words, don't substitute alcohol for food because its something we can consume again in quantity. Plus with the ability to get anebriated faster, it can lead to bad habits.

My Dr. and I agreed that drinking was not a good idea period. For me it is a trigger for other bad behavior. I personally made the commitment that if I had to haul my ass up on an OR table and let a bunch of strangers cut out a perfectly good organ, I could put down the bottle. It isn't going to hurt me physically or socially if I don't take another drink. I don't need a drink to have a good time and I don't need to go back to where I have come from, and alcohol was one of the reasons that I was they way I was. Good luck with your choice.
