Just starting have questions.
bostonmama replied to hotmamma1979's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ask your surgeon about dropping below 40 bmi. I had the same concern and my office said they submit the weight from your first visit, not from any of the follow up visits. -
Anyone have UMR? I wanted to know how long the process may take with UMR? Also my bmi is 40.5 if I loose weight preop will that affect my approval for insurance? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I went through a weight loss clinic. Each month I went in and they did the weigh ins and kept track of that. I was put on a high Protein 1600 cal diet for the 3 months. They showed me exercises to do, but nobody kept track of that. Are you going through someone who specializes in weight loss or just a reg doc?

There are some great threads on here about what to eat.. I think one of them is titled 'what did you eat today?'. I'm a moderate pace loser: I had my surgery 7 weeks ago and have lost 21 lbs since then. I calculated by daily calorie burn based upon my weight and moderate activity level as 2400 calories per day, so my goal is to be negative by 1000 calories per day (intake thus 1400 cals). This should equate to a loss of 2 lbs per week and I'm just about on target (weight loss was greater in the very beginning when on liquids). Typical day: Breakfast is yogurt or oatmeal and a soy latte lunch is a Lean Cuisine Snack is either an Odwalla Protein drink, another yogurt, or a little Dole fruit cup dinner is meat and a vegetable Evening snack is a handful of nuts I've gotten some great ideas for meals on this site. One of my favorites was 'crustless pizza': I would take italian sausage and pepperoni and put it in a container with sauce and LF mozzarella cheese and heat. Delicious! Also do burritos without the tortilla by mixing Beans, some meat, salsa, a little cheese, and guacamole. Very satisfying. In this stage, before you have restriction, it's sort of like being on a diet in that you will be hungry and it does require will power. The good news is you can look forward to your first fill taking over some of the work. Best wishes and congrats on the 15lbs!

achambers replied to MCCLB's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have done the exact same thing, FELL OFF THE BANDWAGON, I went from 272 lost to 236 and then gained back to 255. I am working to get back on track myself, trying to stay motivated. With Gods help i am sure i will meet my goal. -

Hi Karen! My advice to you is to do your research if you haven't already. There are a lot of different kinds of weight loss surgery and a lot of different complications each can have. Make sure you know what the risks are, know what potential problems you can have, and make sure that you're comfortable with the decision. Read the boards here and find blogs of people who have had the surgery! The whole process went by really quickly for me. I went to a seminar, had an actual appointment at the office two days later, and scheduled the surgery at that appointment for four weeks after that! I was a little dazed through the whole thing, really. I'd researched for a few years and then when I finally made a move it was seemingly lightning fast. Best of luck to you!! -
My weight loss slowed a little and I also wanted to give my band a rest so I decided to shake things up. I replaced two of my meals during the day with Protein shakes. At dinner I would eat a high protein meal (fish or chicken). I started on Tuesday and am down 3lbs. My question is will it hurt if I continue to do this until AUG 24th?

I don't eat until I am full. I was told to stop eating when I am satisfied (no longer hungry). And eat again when I am hungry and I have been following that. At first, I measured everything so that I could get a handle on how much food satisfied me yet didn't leave me hungry an hour later. Now I have a handle on it and pretty much know without measuring how much food I should eat. I did overeat at lunchtime once . It felt like a weight on my chest and like the food was getting backed up. I felt uncomfortable all day and was not able to eat until the next morning...something I don't ever want to do again.

I was a slow loser. I think it's best because u aren't prone to eat as much and your body truly adapts to eating smaller portions which will aid in you keeping your weight off longer.

Extra Skin And Depression
Cazzy replied to Lissiepoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think we need a special club for all of us who carry this 'battle scar' around with us, as u can imagine with the amount of weight i have lost i am carrying another persons skin with me, i dislike it intensly but i would rather loose skin than it be filled again. The things that annoy is my legs, i hate my legs, my tummy i can hide but omg legs look awful, so i wont go swimming and i wont wear shorts thank god for spandex lol but i accept that it was a side effect. What gets me most tho is my face, when i was heavy the round face made me look younger, now i see a thin face, with lines showing and i feel old i know i am getting old, but facially i never felt it before, sigh but as the scales reduce my happiness comes from within, i know the skin is surface deep but its not as important as what i feel inside so i will sort it out gradually as and when i can afford it but till i can i do what i can to live with it -
Exercise is the only thing I csn suggest. I am 5 months post op tomorrow, have lost 78lbs and definitely have some sagging, I have been really good with cardio and am now starting a weight/resistance program to help alleviate the sagging. I refuse to have skin removal surgery. Good luck!

What to Tell'em
possiblebandster replied to Uptwist's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! Congrats on your decision! I was banded on 12/21/2010. The only person that knows about my surgery is my husband. I am close with my family but everyone is at their ideal weight and no one has struggled like me. They may have been supportive but I know they would say "it's the easy way out" (which this journey has not been easy at all). No one in my family even knows that I had surgery. The only thing I had to worry about was people at work. I told them I needed to have my gall bladder removed. My surgery date worked perfectly because I am a teacher. I missed 2 days of work abs then was able to recover over Christmas vacation. Since surgery I have lost 47 pounds. It comes off slowly for me and I exercise regularly. Since the weight is coming off slowly (verses gastric bypass) no one has any idea I had weightliss surgery. It's a personal choice but I am a private person and that is the decision I made. Good luck to you in your journey! It is worth it! -
Weight watchers and the band
vlp1968 replied to wozzicat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I tried ww in the past. Wasn't really ready and didn't loose much weight. However, I think their eating plan is very sensible and the meetings motivational. Also, there is something about that weekly weigh in that is motivating. I would give it a try if you think it might help. -
I got a fill last Wed I was 232 got on scale today and it said 220 I thought scale was messed up up at Manor so went over to hospital to weigh it said 219 lol. Love Love Love my lap band. First significant loss I have had in awhile. I even called Dr. thinking maybe I was confused about weight and or date I got fill but nope it is true. 12 pounds since May 14th. And yes I am eating enough. Definitely not starving myself.

I went to my family doctor every month to weigh in for 6 months. Only to find out that those visits didn't count and I was denied. I then went to a nut that specialized in weight loss surgery, she had me keep journals of my feelings, my food, my exercise...anything that had to deal with my struggle of being over weight. I did this for 6 months. After finishing with her and she submitted the paperwork to the insurance, I had to appeal the first denial and was approved in a month and had surgery within 2 weeks there after. So I suggest going to a nut that is familiar with weight loss surgery. good luck to you

Surgery 11/29....and I am nervous as hell....
aquamama replied to HetKF's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is in Tiajuanna and is on Sat 11/27. I too am nervous and all this blogging is a little scary because there are problems I never considered. I tried for a couple years to meet Kaiser's requirements (10% of my body weight off and held off). I did OK for the first 16 lbs but after that I hit a flat line and kept that weight off for almost a year. However Kaiser is very strick and does not budge on that requirement. My weight started creeping back up and I decieded to go for out of country solution and here I am a week from surgery. I am set to have a super sleeve and want any advice to make things go easier and smoother. I did all the Kaiser classes, talked to a psyc, attended classes and support groups so I guess it is time to make it really happen. I really really really hope it goes smoothly so anyone out there with some tips - please pass them on. -
Anyone lose over 100 initially then gain back and recover to get back to goal weight? I need a process/schedule/recommendations please!
BandedInBama replied to cmackpmp's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I really don't think it's that bands are a failure-- it's that its just so easy to get around their restriction. And as overweight people we KNOW ways to get our fix of foods (or I do, anyways)! I KNOW my band can work for me-- I also know that I cheated that puppy for almost 4 years, so I can see their concern. But, I've got friends who went the bypass route who have gained back pretty much all of their weight, so by that reasoning, all WLS is faulty, right? -
From the album: Before Pictures
December 2012 is when I first began my journey into weight-loss surgery and had my first visit with my surgeon. -
They usually say that the lapband allows you to lose 70% of your excess weight and the rest is "up to you". Meaning you have to exercise and really work to get that last 30% off. For me this was more or less true. I am 5lbs from my goal and stuck, and I know that I have to really exercise to build muscle to get it off. I think you can do it if you are patient and keep going in for your fills (as you lose, your stomach loses too and you need to "top off" your band)so you keep losing. One or two pounds a week is normal and safe, but it takes a long time, and a lot of patience. IT CAN BE DONE. I've never had the stomach flu, so I can't answer that question, although I guess you could go to a closer emergency room for an un-fill if you needed it. I have arthritis in my back and losing the weight has helped a ton. I also have a tempurpedic mattress which I recommend highly for back pain sufferers. The lapband is a much healthier way to live than the bypass anyway. There are ways to cheat through your band (eating sweets and foods like ice cream that slide right through the band) but being thin is better than anything you could eat. So why cheat? Good luck on your journey!

chiming in for my monthly update. Still not used to the cpap machine... it sucks really bad, and I don't feel like it's helping AT ALL. On the plus side though, the doctor started giving me Nuvigil to help with my sleepiness from not being able to sleep with the machine. If ANYONE is having trouble sleeping with their cpap, I *highly* recommend you guys ask your doc about it. I feel GREAT on this stuff, awake, focused, ready to seize the day!! On the weight loss side of things, my starting weight was 415, when I checked in with the surgeon, it was 405, and today ( 3 months into my preop diet) I'm down to 375 !! Down 40 pounds ! woot.!

I went through this. I really wanted a tummy tuck about halfway through my weight loss - about November last year. I too thought that if I just lost my tummy, I would be happy with how I looked at that stage. I was convinced that it was the best idea. It was actually Dr Schulman who reminded me that if I lost more weight after the tummy tuck, that I'd likely need even more surgery later because the 'effect' of it wouldn't be as good as if I waited until I was closer to goal. So I waited. I figured at about 7-10 pounds a month weight loss, I'd only have to wait another three months before seeing a PS. So I rescheduled my PS appointment for Jan 09. When I saw him I was 8lbs from goal, instead of 25lbs. He scheduled me for body lift surgery (it's today actually, in about 6 hours!!) and as of today I'm below goal. So I would say that it may be an idea to wait. Even if it's only for 2-3 months. You only have 25lbs left to lose according to your ticker. What's 2-3 months in the scheme of your whole life? And the results will be much better if you wait just a little bit longer.
