    Back pain

I am six days post op and have unbelievable back pain.... it doesnt feel like gas its sore, like hard to stand for a long time. I have had it slightly each day with today being the worst like a 10... I didnt know if this is normal or maybe due to rapid wl Ive already lost 11lbs in six days so idk if I should be worried or if the back pain is normal? They did not give me paun meds either after surgery I was on the fast track plan, so just Tylenol. Sent from my SM-N950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Chewing Slowly

you're supposed to chew your food slowly because your stomach won't churn nearly as much as it does now - so you have to "help" it. That said, I don't chew for 10-15 minutes anymore - but I do still chew more slowly and thoroughly than I did pre-surgery.
  4. Hi all, Anyone have an October 2019 surgery date? Mine is 10/28/19 (my surgeon is away for 2 weeks, so I'm at the end of the month). Oh, the holidays are going to be so weird this year (my birthday too, which is 11/19).
  5. Hello- I am researching and exploring the option to get a gastric bypass. As I am reading posts and looking at people experiences post-op with regard to eating behaviors, I see some mention of slow chewing. When one is on more solid foods and/or complex foods I have read some people might take as much as 10-15 minutes between bites as well as chewing thoroughly during that time. Is that slow, deep chewing of food a habit I will consciously need to change and monitor, or does the surgery, the full feeling and the nausea and pain dictate the slow chewing? In other words, will the slow chewing and long time between bites become a natural thing because of my new stomachs capacity?

    The Maintenance Thread

(EDIT: I was in the middle of writing this and was going to ask for maintenance updates from others when the posts form Cheeseburg and Fluffy came in...we are on same page this morning, literally LOL ) ---------- Ok, meant to write this up a couple days ago on my 10-month post-op "month-aversary, but better late than never, I guess. Anyhoo, an update on the maintenance path so far: I'm now about 3 months into maintenance and I'm feeling the groove. Yeah, I lost 2+ lbs this last month, but I'm not sweating it. I'm still in a healthy BMI range, feel and look great, and comments from the annoying 2-3 people now roll off my back for the most part (though on my less patient days I say a silent "eff you" underneath my understanding smile). Not counting my record-breaking calorie intake when on vacation this month, when I was upward of 3000+ cals a day, I'd say I've been averaging about 1500-2000 for the non-vacation days. But I think my sweet spot is still a liiiiiitle bit higher based on my exercise level*. I notice the loosening of my restriction. I still can't eat very much nor very fast compared to people with normal stomachs, but I'd say I can eat about 25-35% more in volume than 3 months ago...specifically, I can eat about 6-7 bites in a row now before feeling the need to take a break. *My exercise level has increased. I suspect I transferred my focus from weight loss to fitness/exercise. I am obsessed with running a 10K consistently and have been super motivated by the results of my arm & stomach toning efforts to keep it up. I often see people doing stuff and think, "hey, I can do that too", and then I do it or keep trying. I'm reverting to being the annoying little sister my siblings complained about who lives by the anything-you-can-do-I-can-do-better mantra. What is happpppennning??!? Mr. loves it though, he is totally digging that I'm interested and doing all his fave things with him (well except cycling, I will never love it...it hurts my bony butt...so not sure about a previous lofty goal of completing a triathalon next year...but I digress). Finally, I am trying to wean myself off my PPI. It has not been successful. I find that I can go without for about 2 days and then I get to too acidy. Have an appt with my PCP this week to discuss. Would love to hear/read other maintainers' updates ❤️❤️

    Any September Sleevers?

I am from the Chicago area and spent 10 years in SW Florida.... the heat in the desert areas is definitely different. We are definitely "hotter than hell" lol, but we aren't "hot and sticky". We can sit in the shade and feel just a little cooler (can't do that in the midwest). We can jump in a pool and while drying we feel cooler (just feel sticky in the midwest). Also... if you compare the same temperature days... our 80 feels like 80, whereas the humidity makes 80 feel a lot hotter (heat index). Oh well, off topic now!

Time for another day of work. The camisole is a size large and super baggy on me. My jeans are a size 10 and big on the waist. But it works. Have a great day everyone.
  9. My surgeon warned me that I could feel a little depressed after surgery . Well... I’m not feeling necessarily depressed but so frustrated with everyone around me. My patience is at an all time low. I rarely fight with those at home. Typically glass 1/2 full type of girl. My grandchildren moved out 1 year ago so it’s just the 4 adults left here at home. I’m the one who has for the last 10 years been the “mommy” to all of us. I run the day to day “operations “, do all the cooking shopping etc. I’m the matriarch of my family . In general I do feel frustrated with the others on a regular but yesterday I kind of blew up... 1st yelling at them.... then crying. Holy moley !!! THATS NOT TYPICAL. Honestly I was a little justified because I wasn’t getting some of the help I needed but my delivery was definitely out of character! So yes.... we can have have some emotional upheavals . The temporary hormone changes are real!! On a positive.... today I’m one week out from sleeve & down 9 lbs. I’m getting better every day at taking all my meds. For a few days that was rough. I’m getting in my protein & my fluids. Thank you all for listening!!! 👍👍👍

    Clothing Rollercoaster

I smashed saver so I have clothes size 12 through size 16w packed away. I'm 10 day out so still wearing my 2x and 18w hoping when they get to big I'll donate and take them to Goodwill. Not sure if I will ever get back in a 12 so when I hit goal they may have to go too but I'll wait and see once I'm in a 14. I plan on purging each size as I go. And will check the thrift store for any fill in the blanks I need

  13. I’m on the Dartmouth diet to prep for surgery per order of my surgeon. The basic break down is cream of wheat, soup, protein shakes and jello/pudding. I’m on day four now and I’m just getting progressively more sick. TMI- but nauseous, gagging when eating, diarrhea, exhausted and cloudy. I’m not sure what I should do? My surgery is Thursday 8/29/19 so I have 3 more full days of this left. I’m open to experiences and suggestions.
  14. Hi guys. In 10 days I start my two week pre-op diet. I can only have protein shakes during this time. I’m a bit lost as to which one to buy. My doc says any brand will do so which ones do you recommend?
  15. Congratulations on your pending surgery. I had my GSV last Wednesday. I am 67. I always swore that I would NEVER get over 300 pounds. Three times in my life, I have lost 75 pounds on my own. But unless I maintained a rigorous exercise regiment and a super strict diet, the weight would slowly come back. Then about 18 months ago I got on the scale and weighed in at 315! That was it for me. I have 3 ruptured discs in the lumbar region of my back and so cannot walk or stand for any length of time. I began by really truly using my Fitbit. I began to keep a food diary, entering my water intake, and logging my exercise. I have a recumbent bike and started riding five to seven times a week, starting for ten minutes and then adding five minutes every two weeks until I could ride for thirty minutes. at 13 to 14 MPH. I created a playlist of high energy songs (the kind that makes your feet move). Then sitting on a chair and moving my legs and arms to the beat of the music for 30 to 60 minutes a day. It probably doesn't sound like that would work but it does. My heart rate averaged about 115 beats and often reach 150 and the swear poured off of me. I usually lifted my two pound weights for fifty times before I started chair dancing, fifteen minutes after stating my chair dancing and after I finished my chair dancing. I could not imagine myself successfully sticking to a liquid diet for two weeks but I did and I continued with my exercise program. On August 21, 2019 as I was bei8ng prepped for surgery I weighed in at 262 pounds! We were advised by my surgeon's PA-C that we would vomit at least once after the surgery. However, I HATE vomiting so I have been very careful about how quickly I ingest my continuing liquid diet. To date, I have yet had to do that which I hate. I just concentrate on eating and drinking s l o w. The nutritionist recommended Isopure unflavored protein to add to broth so I bought some (I live in a very rural area so I rely on Amazon). Isopure also has a flavored protein that you can add to water and I bought that in Mixed Berry and that has proven to make staying on the liquid diet relatively painless. Now, for a treat I found on Amazon and not only is it delicious but the nutritionist was excited when I told her about it. It is Sans Sucre Mousse mixes. They are frothy, light, sugar free and very low fat when made with skim milk. I stepped on the scale (once my fiercest foe) and as of today I am down to 257. I have never felt so confident in my ability to lose the weight and this time to keep it off. I have always eaten relatively healthy (I admit to some bad habits though) but my biggest challenge was always portion control. The surgery is helping me with that aspect of weight control but over the months that I prepared for the surgery, I have developed the habit of exercising faithfully. I do not let myself leave my bedroom until I have ridden my recumbent bike for thirty minutes at the barest minimum of exercise for the day. This is not to say, that the surgery was easy. Anyone who thinks this is a silver bullet for weight loss, has never done it. While I strive to eat and drink slowly, I still manage to go too fast and the result is NOT pleasant. The surgeon prescribed a medication to help with the cramping and nausea and I am definitely using it. Admittedly, I felt extremely tired after the surgery for about three days (however, part of that was due to the fact that I had to travel about two hundred miles home). But yesterday, I felt so energetic. I decided to not resume exercising until tomorrow (I cleared this with the surgeon). So, good luck on your surgery. Even at this early date, I am very glad that I had the surgery.
  16. Okay. Down another 1.2 pounds from Wednesday. I’m now 167.8. And that’s with 3 days zero poop. Today I gave myself a 10 hour eating window and I’m packing in the protein. As a result, it’s also a much higher calorie day (I’ll hit around 950 before all is said and done) and I’m feeling like a total glutton. It’s intentional though because I’m going to go very light over the next 2 days. Lol, I actually need a day off work to eat >900 calories in a day. I can remember sometimes that would happen in a single meal, and I sure didn’t get in over 75gm protein with those 900 calories.
  17. So today I’m upping my protein massively and I’m giving myself a 10 hour eating window 9:30am (80cal) 1/2 premier protein shake (bananas and cream) and in my morning coffee. 11:30am (210 cal) 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 8 ounces fairlife milk 3:30pm (278 cal) 1 cup of that Tuscan keto soup (no extra scoop bone broth powder) 7pm (268 cal) Italian sausage and 1 ounce kimchee. Over 75gm protein and a VERY high calorie day for me at >900 cal. I’m trying my best to switch things up because I’m working 22 hours in the next 2 days and will slip into sub 600 calorie days and a 18:6, followed by a 16:8 day. Exercise was a cardio 1.5 class followed by a flow 1.5 — each class was 50 mins
  18. I certainly can't speak to the rides but as for the stamina I would think you'd be back in action by then. I am 10 days out and just traveled about 4 hrs to Celebrate my daughters engagement and stay 2 nights, If you asked me last week I couldn't imagine being here. However we arrived and have been doing nothing but walking and bopping from place to place. You got this

I think this is whats happening to me honestly. I try the protein shakes in many flavors and I become incredibly gassy my back is killing me today I am straight up miserable! Idk I am desperate to eat something that doesnt taste like a cow smells. I never used to have this problem I looooove cottage cheese and yogurt but now it kills me. And because I ate so much broth before rhe surgery I am literally over it now. Not a great start but I am happy I did this and I know it will all pay off I just need to be able to get my protwin some other way. hw 266 sw 252 cw in progress sleeved 08/20/19

    VSG surgery scheduled for Monday

Welcome and I wish you all the best in your weight loss journey!! This has been the best decision I've made. I researched it for years before actually going through with it. My only regret is not having surgery sooner! I was more excited than nervous about surgery. The morning of surgery went by really fast, everyone involved in the surgery prep process was kind and supportive. My surgery and recovery went amazingly well. Hope yours goes as well as mine! You've got this!! 5'4" Starting weight 297 VSG on 7/31/19 Surgery wt: 266 CW 248 GW 135 Sent from my [samsung Galaxy] using BariatricPal mobile app
