My pre-op diet was simple. I couldn't take in more than 1000 calories for two weeks. My cousin was on a two week liquid diet. It depends on your surgeon.

Is the acid reflux permanent?
Oregondaisy replied to steve-o's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't have the feeling of hunger being off mine. I do get heartburn and some days it's bad and some days I have none at all. I've been off mine about 6 weeks now. I've heard of people getting off of them without any trouble. Since you had GERD before the sleeve, you may need to stay on it. If I were you, I would try the generic of Protonix. The generic is very inexpensive and I think Protonix works extremely well. Make sure you take calcium citrate but not within 2 hours of taking your PPI. Men get osteoporosis too. I was shocked when I found out I had the beginning stages of it. -
Gastric Sleeve Newbie with LOTS of ?'s
bigbang52 replied to skinny18's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How much you lose is up to you. Typically they say about 60% of excess weight but it can be more or less depending on your ability and desire to exercise and eat right. But the battle isn't with your stomach- it's with your mind. We have an addiction and you have to treat it as such. And getting active will help. I took up swimming because I have bad knees and it's been great. For a few weeks to a few months eating will be much different than you're used too. Full very fast. EAT SLOWLY. If you overeat I guarantee you will only want to do it once. Follow the plan your doctor gives you and don't deviate. They have a reason they do what they do. You will gradually be able to eat more but never like you used to. I just had my first ice cream in 4 years. 1 scoop filled me up. And no real desire to have more. The quantity you'll be able to eat will vary depending on what you're eating and how fast. But don't push it. I've had to find other things to replace my eating. I can still eat most things just in much smaller quantities. I don't do rice or much pasta or potatoes as they fill me up very fast and no room for the healthier- and tastier- things. I felt great after surgery. Told the doctor I've had worse paper cuts. No pain, no gas, no upset stomach. But I'm one of the lucky ones. Expect some problems like gas and just have a heat pad ready - it helps. There can be complications- that's true with any surgery but, again, follow instructions for hygiene and type of food. Excess skin? Oh yeah! I've lost about 250 pounds and I look like a partially deflated balloon. But I'm working at losing some more to have skin removal. Need a BMI of around 35 before that happens. How long again is a matter of how much and how fast you lose. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! I wish I had done it 10 years before I did. But fear kept me from trying. I heard a quote bt Will Smith. " God puts the best things in life on the other side of fear." How true! Finally I would recommend a book called Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies. Very informative. Good luck -
Nope. Sorry. You can use weights to tone but it won't do anything for the skin - though it might help fill out the skin a little if that makes sense.... Your body will shift around a LOT during your loss phase. You just have to dress as best as you can and realize that it is all for the better in the end. I reached goal several months ago but even though my weight has stayed the same, people keep saying I look thinner - and it is just the "parts" shifting around. PS - My brachioplasty is in 5 weeks. Can. Not. Wait!!

Anyone lose a bunch before surgery?
shrinkinggrl replied to GeorgieGirl1957's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
GG I am in a stall right now...the dreaded "3rd week stall". Yargh. So I am having the same panicky thoughts. Sigh. Oh, well. I know that logically I am eating too few calories NOT to lose weight. But it really is disheartening to see that # freeze in place. I need to back away from the scale and not go near it for a few days or a week. Hope you are fabulous! -
Anyone lose a bunch before surgery?
jenn20 replied to GeorgieGirl1957's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 55 pounds in 5 months before surgery and right now I am 5 weeks out and have lost 30 pounds. I actually thought this same exact questions the night before surgery. I thought...'well I have been eating very little before the sleeve already, so would it make a big difference after surgey? Will I still loose the weight like everyone else?'..... and the answer is yes! so don't worry about it. By the way congrats on loosing that weight! It only makes it closer to goal!! You loose so fast in the beginning that it makes you only jump closer to goal by loosing that weight before surgery! Good luck on your journey and keep us posted! -
So yesterday I took my daughter to the movies, we stopped at chipotle before we went. Just the smell make me wanna droll, she even asked if I was gonna eat. I told her no, and had a protein shake. Today at work, I have a heavy Co worker, she noticed that I don't eat anything like her, she is always speaking about how she is about to "start working out" and "juicing" blah blah. Needless to say haven't seen her do anything. She is really big on talking a good game. Well I truly believe that she has noticed a huge difference in my eating habits (I am a week and a half post op) and 40 lbs down so far. She has yet to conpliment me..... not that im waiting for one. she always ask me about food, if I wanna cook, if I Wanna go get lunch. I always tell her no. Well today she made it her duty to buy me some subway. Anyone would think it was a "nice thing" however I know for a fact she wants me to stay fat and throw off my eating habits. Once again this helped me with the will power. I gave the sand which away. Honestly I don't have the same craving as I did before. Smh let the games begin. I need her to come harder if she gonna come!!

24 hours after surgery
joatsaint replied to Bridget312001's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It does get better. I didn't eat anything for the 1st 5 days. I was in a lot of pain and my stomach rebelled with even the smallest bites. I wasn't able to eat a whole can of Soup in a day until the 3rd week. I could tell when I was getting full when I'd start to burp, and I'd have to eat very very slow. I'm talking 1/2 tsp every 5 minutes. I could take one bite to many and be in misery. I was still learning how much I could hold. So try to hang in there. It does get better, but it takes time. -
I'm 2 1/2 weeks out. My NUT advanced my diet to the following: yogurt, eggs, cheese, refried Beans, puréed chicken/turkey, veggie patties, and turkey sausage crumbles. But everything is making me nauseated, or hurts when I eat it. I'm trying to drink a lot of Fluid...& am not doing great at Protein (again back to the nausea)... Did anyone else experience this? Did it eventually subside? Any tips?

It's so hard not to compare ourselves to others, but this is our own individual journey. I'm 7 weeks out today and down 26 pounds. The day of surgery I was 205. I tell myself this is way more than I could have lost on my own. It will come off, just keep following the plan!!

This is the first time I have been on this. I had my surgery on Jan.24. Everything went great! I lost 25 pounds the first 2 weeks, and now I havn't lost anything. Have other people gone thru this? I have my first fill next Friday. I can't wait! I want to start losing again!!!

18 pounds is great. I am in the same boat. I lost about 25 pounds the first 2 weeks, and I havn't lost anything since. It is very frustrating, but it is a long process. I am waiting to get my first fill next week. Just keep your mind on how good your going to look this summer! Thats what I keep telling myself!

Banded 1 week ago- questions
Guest replied to georgiagal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
As the swelling goes down and you heal you will become hungrier. Whatever you do follow your doctor's instructions. The first six weeks are for healing - let your body do that. Make sure you check with your doctor tomorrow about an issues you may be insure about. We all recover differently and have different issues. I hate to use the word issues...but everyone heals differently and has different reactions to the surgery. Take it easy, rest and when you are able slowly start moving again. Stay hydrated. Good luck and congratulations! -
Banded 1 week ago- questions
Mocha75 replied to georgiagal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was banded 1 week ago tomorrow and I haven't experienced what you're experiencing but I will have this pain on the left side of my stomach. This happens mostly in the evenings but also at night and it wakes me up. I know this is only the first week so I've been writing all my questions down for my doctor. I will see him again on 12/29. -
When will my energy be back?
smorvant22 replied to rocknrollmama1980's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
im almost 4 weeks post op and i just started getting some of my energy back. -
I think some of the weight is from the crackers/sweets/fried food and brownies; and the some is from the high salt content that is fast/fried food. If you MUST have a snack at night I would make it chicken breast, or veggies. Because crunchy carbs are my down fall I don't keep them in my house at all. Full disclosure I had chips and salsa, and cheesecake at a Super Bowl party and it took me a week to loose those 4 pounds that were there Monday morning. Stupid Patriots!!!

I have a rumbly tummy and I will be 4 weeks post op on Monday. Every time anything hits my pouch it rumbles! LOL:-) but it's all good because the weight is coming off...I'm very very happy! surgery date: 7/30/12

pre op diet confusion
annieminutenow replied to dhall111's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Restless Monkey, How did they ascertain that your liver was too large for surgery? Did they take an Xray before surgery or did they rely on a physical exam? Also, what type of pre op diet were you given? I am on a low carb, high Protein diet for two weeks pre surgery, then one day of clear liquids. Is that what you had? Annieminute -
I'm following my doc's pre-op diet - full liquids which includes Clear Liquids and Soups with no chunks (creamy), frozen yogurt, popsicles, yogurt, etc. This is a 2 week diet, I'm on day 6. And I see that other people are on clear liquids only for 1-2 days. And some that are on liquids for a full week. And some are on low carb - so they can eat meat and stuff, just no sugars/carbs. And some that really don't have much of a diet at all. I'm not having any problems on my diet though I wonder why all the different types of diets? I know that all docs are different, but for most other medical issues there are general guidelines. To me it seems really weird that clear liquids, full liquids, and no carb diets can all have the same effect.

When I weighed myself at home on 2/6/12, I weighed 256. I was so happy because I had lost 2 pounds (I was 258 the previous Monday). I stuck close to my diet all week, but did cheat a few times with some crackers and sweets in the evenings. I still exercised each day though. Then, over the weekend, we had friends over and they brought Long John Silvers for dinner. I knew it was bad, but I didn't want to insult them, so I had 2 pieces of fish, 2 hushpuppies, and cole slaw. While we were playing cards, I also ended up snacking on brownies and Cookies that my husband had made. I knew it was bad and a no-no, but it had been sooooo long since I had those things. Well, Monday morning, I had an adjustment appointment and I weighed in at 261. I was so angry and mad at myself. I couldn't figure out how I gained 5 pounds in 1 week, but I bust my butt to only lose 2 pounds the previous week.... Is this possible, or was it possibly Water retention. My PA gave me a big lecture about carbs and how they affect blood sugar, insulin production, and fat storage. I felt like a little kid who had failed their science test. I weighed today and I'm back down to 258, which I'm happy about, but I'm still at a loss of the 5 pounds in 1 week. My scales are also very accurate. They are usually within 1 pound with my doctor's scales. I know there will be bumps in this road, but I didn't realize one cheat day would produce those horrible results. Needless to say, I'm back on the wagon this week and hopefully next Monday, I can see that 256 or less again....

After walking for almost 2 months, without my regular, cardio, power barbell, spin.........the PT could hurt - a bit Looking to getting the first fill done, being okayed for exercise and taking my gym membership off of hold........it will be a good week.

I waited two weeks to go back. For the first couple of days I was too exhausted to make it past about 3 PM so went home early, but otherwise everything was fine.

DeeSleeved427 replied to MrsSugarbabe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello ladies! I just received my date for December 1st-I'm also very excited about finally reaching this point (I had a 6 month supervised weight requirement for insurance). My pre-op appointments are on 11/20 and 11/26 so I guess I'll also be on liquids the week of thanksgiving also. I believe my plan allows one lean meal per day so I'll get some nice turkey and veggies still ???? looking forward to seeing your progress! -
Stomach feels full?
James Marusek replied to ThreeCrows's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After surgery, the primary drivers are meeting your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary. Your body is converting the stored fat in your body into energy. Thus you lose weight. I had RNY surgery and was restricted to 2 ounces (1/4 cup) of food per meal at the six week mark. So I thought it strange that you were consuming a cup per meal. But there are a variety of surgeries such as Sleeve and the meal limit requirements will differ. There are many different types of Protein shakes out there. To me they all taste bad. I experimented until I found one that I could tolerate. In my case it was Muscle Milk Light. I used a blender (Ninja single serving size) to blend the powder to the proper consistency. I blended in a banana to mask the taste.
