I was allowed to swallow anything smaller than a pencil eraser right after leaving the hospital - which for me meant all but two pills. One was calcium tablets, so I just got chewables. Can't remember what the other one was (it's been over seven years), but the PA at my bariatric clinic said it would be OK to wait for a couple of weeks to start taking those - and by that time, I should be able to swallow them. He was right.

@@ckrbaird it's not actually stated that way and no one from Cigna ever said it to me. It's been ppl who have dealt with Cigna who've always said the 25-30 day thing. I called Cigna again today because I've been worried as well. The person I spoke with conferred with a coworker who had Bariatric surgery through Cigna (go figure) and she said it is 30 days. I asked about weekends and the fact that my dr isn't in the office on Fridays because those things interfere with 2 of my appt dates. She said that I could have my dr get a pre-approval based on that information. I honestly don't think anyone knows for sure.

Gastric Bypass - Mexico
Threetimesacharm replied to canadian_girl's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had sleeve to gastric bypass in Mexico. Check here on bariatric pal for a surgeon. They have a fantastic system set up for surgeons, package deals including hospital stay, recovery house, personal valet, 2 years nutritional follow up. -
Yeah on mine, James M. it said " vomiting of a prolonged period" well I called my Bariatric Clinic in such a case, was told by one of their Nurse Practioners I was delusional, I knew dang well there was NOTHING WRONG with me and to stop bothering them. Oh I have not called them again, I will be 10 months on Friday next and I don't believe I should still have frequent episodes of emesis My local community hospital, knicknamed "the BandAid station" is even worse, sad to say. They are not sure WTF to do with me, maybe they hope for constipation, fever, headaches and other "easy peasy "things, something within their competences. But a bypass patient, like a purple- spotted giraffe, interesting to look at, but what DO YOU. REALLY DO WITH one?👈👩👉

When can I have toast again?
catwoman7 replied to ColoradoCanuck's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
if you're avoiding bread for carb reasons, then I don't think toasting it is going to make any difference. I didn't eat bread at all during the weight loss phase, since I was following a moderately low carb diet (not ultra low carb like a lot of bariatric patients do). I do eat bread occasionally now that I'm in maintenance - but then thing to keep in mind is that it's not terribly nutritious, and it takes up valuable space in our tiny stomachs. You're usually better off filling the space with protein and nutrient-dense things like vegetables. -
When can I have toast again?
Lydarose replied to ColoradoCanuck's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was told by my bariatric practitioner that UNTOASTED bread an get gummy, ball up in your pouch, and cause trouble. Toasting the bread makes it more crumbly thus making it easier to make it’s journey through the narrow passage. I was allowed 1/2 slice of toast when I transitioned to a general diet, about 7 weeks post-op. -
Can low protein cause me to always feel hungry?
pminshew replied to Aginn10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, not enough protein (60-80mg was what I was recommended) will make you hungry. I’m almost a year out and have gone back to some bad habits (sweets, very little protein) so I saw my Bariatric nutritionist and she was adamant about getting my protein in and not worry too much about carbs and calories. I’m still in my losing phase, but I swear when I get in a ton of protein I not only feel better, but I go right back to eating super small portions. -

SLEEVE TO BYPASS REVISION
himalaya62 replied to MissLaLa05's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey. I'm having my sleeve to bypass revision next Wednesday, July 29. I was sleeved in February 2013. I lost about 40 pounds and kept it off for a year when I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and was started on a beta blocker. I gained 20 pounds the first month and it has just gone up since then. My insurance said only one bariatric surgery per lifetime however I decided to try to have it approved and they approved it within two days. The insurance company considered my failed sleeve a complication as well as my new heart condition and borderline sleep apnea. I thought for sure I would have to appeal the denial but was happily surprised. So if your insurance states one bariatric surgery in a lifetime, try to get it approved anyhow. You may be pleasantly surprised. I have completed all my preop requirements and I started my diet today. Has anybody gone through this and are you glad that you did this? My biggest fear is not the surgery itself but being a failure again. It's so embarrassing. I am telling very few people I'm having RNY. They all think I'm having a hiatal hernia repair. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you. -

Low blood pressure after RYGB?
James Marusek replied to eudys3's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Being dizzy, lightheadedness, fainting can also be caused by low blood sugar. There is a condition that occurs in Gastric Bypass patients called Reactive Hypoglycemia. One man in our bariatric surgery support group developed that condition. After fainting one time, he figured out the cause and then learned how to control the condition. Here are a few links. https://www.ridgeviewmedical.org/services/bariatric-weight-loss/enewsletter-articles/reactive-hypoglycemia-postgastric-bypass/ https://www.stjoes.ca/patients-visitors/patient-education/f-j/PD 7972 Reactive Hypoglycemia after Bariatric Surgery.pdf -

How long should I wait before I can do squats?

congratulations on your quitting smoking. The issue with smoking and this surgery has to do with the liability/risk a physician is taking with someone who is getting "elecftive" surgery. Most surgeons prefer not to add an additionalrisk of a smoker to the already risk of being obese. It is the patient who needs to decide that this is one more step towards being healthy. If someone is deciding to address obesity with something as radical as bariatric surgery it doesn't make sense that they would continue to smoke which is an even higher risk for other health problems. (vascular issues, respiratory issues and cancer). This is a big committment and it should be a healthy committment for a healthier lifestyle across the board. Which includes smoking cessation. I was a smoker 35 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made to quit. Congratulations on an excellent choice towards a healthier you.

Upcoming article on obesity - if you are interested in being quoted, let me know
Dr. Schulman posted a topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I am working on an upcoming article about the psychology of obesity, for a popular magazine. If you are interested in being quoted, please private message me. Specifically, I am interested in: the psychological impact of being obese (personally, professionally, socially) the psychological impact of losing weight (the good, and the bad - has the weight loss improved things psychologically or has it actually made some things worse?) the psychological impact of having bariatric surgery (have people accused you of "taking a shortcut"?) I am looking to incorporate several "stories" into this article. Please send any information to me within the next week. I will contact anyone whose information will be used. If you want to send pictures too, please do. I appreciate the help - I know there will be some great stories from everyone here. -
Scared to death in Georgia
lindajoy replied to lindajoy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well spoke with one bariatric center regarding lap band in the atlanta area...my BMI is border line, have a few medical problems with the extra weight but not enough to get me into a meeting. Unalbe to get BCBS of GA to insure the surgery and I do not have 17, 000.00 laying around to pay for this procedure myself. So with that being said, thank you for the support you have showed me, and I wish you all the best of luck. -

When will bariatric care catch up with the science?
Cleo's Mom replied to Trillium's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I also think the surgeons who perform these surgeries need to catch up to obesity research, in many cases. Most, if not all, bariatric surgeons were general surgeons at one point who jumped on the bariatric bandwagon when insurance started paying for these procedures. I'm not sure what extra training they received but I think many of them are undereducated on the factors that result in obesity as well as realistic weight loss goals and weight gain after surgery. Obesity is a disease but is not treated as such by many in the medical profession and certainly not by the media or public. Blame the victim. -
Mine is at georgetown bariatric center.... In georgetown, ky. How long have you been going through the process?

I have ameriheath in Pennsylvania and the requirements for me are bmi of 40 or higher with no health problems or bmi of at least 35 with two health problems. Also for me it was a 6 month program (im on my 4th month), and just like most others its a visit with a dietitian and psych eval. I hope that helped! Also if you go to google and type in your insurance provider and put requirements for bariatric surgery it should bring you a form! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Thank you for the response. When you say a 6 month diet plan is that through the surgeon? I have been on a diet plan through my pcp for months with weight loss medication. I wonder if that would be acceptable. Mine is through the surgeon but im not sure! Maybe as long as you followed the guidelines i dont see why they would say no Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

What was the first food you ate when allowed soft foods?
FatPharm replied to FatPharm's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I did keto for a long time pre-op and even before I thought about bariatric surgery. My program is different, I guess, in that we don't do purees or full liquids and move onto soft foods like cottage cheese and yogurt, etc. on day 10. We are allowed chicken salad, even. She said to start with Greek yogurt, which I did. -
thank you all. I am grateful for your feedback and support. proudgrammy your results are amazing. hope to even come close. called my bariatric doc today to speak with their PA. hope to get some feedback from her too. I sometimes wonder if all the ups and downs over the years have gotten me to a place where my body is not responding to an 800-1000 calorie Protein mostly diet. not sure. well I got the sleeve so no turning back now. hope to feel grateful and provide support for others soon.

Got a date...anyone else having surgery October 7th?
hharrison43 replied to hharrison43's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Great ideas ladies!! The Bariatric protein powder is good..chocolate! I know my Dr said after surgery to not go over 5 grams of sugar due to dumping syndrome. The applesauce sounds awesome! And adding unflavored protein powder would work! ☺ Yall need to read "The Big Bariatric Surgery" book. I purchased on Amazon to read on notepad. Gives soo many helpful hints and advice w diet and menu help on what to eat during each phase. I also bought "Weight loss surgery for dummies" and it's a great book too!! I'm gonna have to get the sugar free Hershey syrup! Yummy!
