  2. I know this is a topic that gets a lot of judgment on this forum. All I am asking is kindness in response. I am looking into getting my sleeve turned into RNY. I successfully lost all of my weight and kept it off for two years. I then got pregnant with twins. It was a high risk pregnancy and I didn't gain any weight during the first two trimesters. Due to pressure from my OB and my own fears about my babies I began to eat as much as I physically could. To be clear, I am not blaming anyone but myself, I am just explaining that it wasn't the typical slipping back into bad habits situation. After I gave birth to my premature daughters (who are now fine, healthy, amazing), I was stuck in the habit of continually overeating. It's a rut I continually fight to get out but I am now looking at revision to RNY because of this. Does anyone have success stories, words of wisdom, or revision after pregnancy experience? Thank you, Jen
  3. Very high in caffeine. I would check with your NUT. I was told no caffeine for a long time to insure proper healing. Since I had a revision, it may be never have caffeine again.

    I'm struggling, a lot.

Eating soft mushy foods 4 days after gastric bypass surgery I recently had gastric bypass surgery on 11/23/2016. It was a revision as well to remove the lap band I had in 2010. I did well in the hospital and when I got home the first day in eating Clear liquids but soon I became really dizzy and was somewhat still hungry so I took a hash brown patty and microwaved it till it was smooshy and then ate it. Nothing came back up so the next day I soft scrambled an egg and mixed it with the hash brown patty and it was ok except for it felt like things were moving inside my stomach is me being able to tolerate soft mushy foods so soon die to having had the lap band earlier? I just want to stay on track and wound appreciate any advice you could give me... thanks Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Oops that should be "due" Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App And "would" Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  5. I have suffered from severe depression and fibromyalgia for years. I have had several hospitalizations, and so many med changes I lost count. I even had electro-convulsive therapy. I had to give up my career and take my disability. That's a story all on its own. I opted for the sleeve, because my health had begun to fail me and I had to get the weight off. A lot of it is from medications I have taken over the years. Research your meds, and if any of them cause weight gain, you have to switch or you'll have a hard time losing. I ended up having severe bile reflux--my gallbladder was removed years before my WLS, so bile just backed up into my sleeve and into my esophagus. It was torture. I had to have a revision to bypass to cure the reflux. My psychiatrist had to change two of my meds because they were extended release and I need immediate release now. I have never felt better psychologically. My meds are working great, and the weight loss helps immensely. I still have to do the work in therapy, but for now I am doing surprisingly well. This is a decision that will always fall under great scrutiny; so many people know nothing about WLS and some of them believe in incorrect information. You will have to defend your decision often in the beginning. You are the one who has to live with it and make all the changes. You may just have to wait until you prove them wrong before they will accept it. Some people never will. They will maintain that you should have done it on your own. I make no apologies for my decision. It was right for me. All you can do is try to educate them as to why this is the choice you have made. If you truly believe it is best for you, then do it. Just make sure you are ready to change every aspect of your relationship with food if you have to. It is worth it. Even if you feel alone at first, trust in your decision and follow your instinct about it. Good luck to you. I hope you find your way to what is best for you.
  6. I didn't have a last minute switch, but went into mine not knowing which I'd end up with. I had a revision, dr said if there Is too much scarring I will do a sleeve, if it is fine, a rny. I wanted an rny. I found out when I woke up in recovery

Oh Lord :/ That's my whole reasoning for wanting a revision is that for the life of me I can't loose anything after getting the liquid out I've gained 15lbs and now that I have liquid put back in I can't even loose the 15lbs I gained!! apart from having some minor issues with my bad. 9. I read each and every posts. I realize they were giving a pass to the medically necessary revision. My point was that some people were still coming across as very judgmental. Just not an attractive thing for this type of board.

My band surgery vs. RnY surgery

I agree! It was light the light when on and I could live again. I'm over a year out from RNY revision and couldn't be happier!
  14. @RealScoobyDoo Do you mind me asking... why are you having a revision to a bypass? Did the sleeve not work for you?

    Band vs Sleeve

I'm another former band revision (to rny) due to complications/breakage. there may be a possibility with complications after any surgery but with the band it is pretty high (especially when you look 5-10+ years out). it worked for me, then complications and it eventually broke. someone on another post said you need to look at it like you would breast implants. they need to be replaced every 10-15 years because it is a piece of equipment and they don't last forever. Mine lasted 11 years. others on here have some that are even older than that and still working. i am one of the lucky people who did not have heavy scar tissue or erosion that might prevent a revision or make it more risky.
  16. If you read the posts you will see that no one has issues with medically necessary revisions but at least a few times a week some one starts a thread basically saying that they successfully lost weight but regained it and are angry that their insurance wouldn't pay for another surgery. A few of them have had lap band revised to sleeve, not because of a mechanical problem, but because they regained the weight and call it a surgery "failure" (the i r words not mine) and are now seeking an RNY. The sleeve doesn't "break" and the stomach capacity can be evaluated. If the sleeve works why risk another major surgery? My concern is that for these people the underlying food issues have clearly not been resolved. To my way of thinking performing another surgery is unethical. I myself was sleeved on 10/25 and though I have never had GERD or any digest problems before but I now have severe GERD I sometimes vomit up even with the Protein shakes. It might improve. I'm hoping it does. Of course, one would want to live with this for the rest of their lives. No one should have to. I hope this clarifies the reason the thread was started. God luck with

Just got revision from sleeve to bypass!

I was sleeved in February of 2014 and had my revision to RNY on Nov 14th, 2016, My GERD was so severe that even water gave me heartburn. Acid was always coming up into my esophaugus causing me to choke and cough. I had to carry a bronchial dialater with me everywhere. I had taken so much medication and it was no longer working for me. My surgeon was afraid I was developing ulcers and the possibility of cancer was increasing. She talked me into having the RNY. I had a few problems with it and ended up staying in the hospital for a week. I've been home for a week and a half and still having complications. Definitely not as easy as the sleeve was. The good thing is....not one it of reflux or heartburn and I no longer wake up at night choking. I had no problem getting the insurance to approve the revision since it was for health issues. My surgeon's office handled everything and the approval went through in a week. Good luck.
  18. I feel like this particular board is being a bit judgmental. I had revision surgery two weeks ago from the Sleeve to RNY, For the record, I did not want to have revision surgery (who would????) but due to severe GERD and Rheumatoid Arthritis i had no choice. For my health it was necessary. I loved my sleeve and never wanted anything different, now dealing with the RNY is different and will be for the rest of my life. Being obese, we were always being judged by others and this forum is supposed to be our "safe place" but it doesn't seem very safe for some people.. Different surgeries work for different people and some don't work as well or at all. Our pouches are tools and those tools can fail regardless of how well someone is informed or how well they are sticking to their diets. Yes there are some people with food addictions or other issues that prevent them from following the plan. But to suggest because they have not been fully compliant they shouldn't be allowed an additional surgery in hopes that the new surgery could help them, is a bit cruel and selfish. Once you are a few years out from surgery your perspectives may change. I wish everyone good health and weight loss and know that any issues you have are just as valid as anyone else's.

@@keykey42 hi! I am having bypass due to me wanting to lose over 100 lbs and because I have Gerd (didn't want to take a chance of revision from sleeve to bypass if my Gerd didn't go away). My doctor personally gave his recommendation about what surgery he felt was best for me, after hearing some of my reasons for considering WLS. I say talk to your surgeon Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    New york (surgery 3/2017)

Hi there, I'm not in NYC but am a native NY'er now living in LA. I was banded at NYU in 2008 -- my revision surgery is scheduled for March 6th -- I'm also in month 3 of the 6 month diet. (Also, a fellow BC/BS). Where are you having your surgery done?

Just got revision from sleeve to bypass!

I have the same situation. I was sleeved Nov 2014 and I now have really bad acid reflux and heartburn all the time. Not sure how to go about seeing if I qualify through my insurance for a revision. I went through True Results and they aren't even open for business anymore. Really frustrating!!! Band vs Sleeve

When I first heard of the band I knew I didn't want it. The idea of having something like that in my body all the time didn't appeal to me, and I also had no desire to go back and have another surgery if I wanted or needed it removed. I wanted one surgery and done. When I first heard about the sleeve I knew it was for me. My first surgeon's visit in early August he told me he rarely does the band anymore, however, he did blame a lot of band issues on "user error". Still, he rarely advises anyone have the band. I do have a story for you about rupture though, you may want to think about it since you job is so physical. I have a friend who had the band for several years. She had not met her goal weight but was losing well and was happy with it. Then she had a heart attack (I am sure it had nothing to do with the band, most likely years of obesity) Anyway, somehow her band itself ruptured. She thinks it had to do with the chest compressions she had during cardiac arrest. Now she is walking around with a ruptured band, scheduled to have a revision to sleeve in early 2017. I agree with others, talk to your surgeon. Your individual needs and challenges will be taken into consideration.

    Band vs Sleeve

Hi YA, I am a RNYer, I'm 3 years out and had GREAT results I have been at my goal weight for 2 and 1/2 years. But, my hubby had his Lap Band for 13 years. Now he lost 100#'s but he started out at 515#'s. Which he didn't follow all of his guidelines but he did manage to keep the 100#'s off pretty much. Now fast forward to 2012 ( which was 13years after his Band) So it malfunctioned, he couldn't hold down even Water. So we went to the VA and was referred to a Bariatric Center 2 hours from home. He was going to have the band removed, gallbladder removed and a revision to the RNY. When they got in there the Band had eroded into his Liver!! There was to much scar tissue and bleeding so he backed out and told him that they would do the WLS after he healed. Well, he ended up with abscesses, and was deathly sick for 9 months, 3 of which he doesn't even remember. He ended up having a Wound Vac put in and went to wound care every day at first then every other day until he was healed. So he went back to get his RNY, but the Dr called him a PROBLEM CHILD. Wouldn't be getting the surgery from him. Now fast forward to 2016, we went to Mexico for his WLS. Still wanting the RNY. But his whole right side was solid scar tissue and he ended up with the SLEEVE. I'm not saying this to scare anyone but PLEASE make sure you know the problems of each surgery. You and your Surgeon are the only ones that can make an educated decision. Research everything before you decide. Good Luck

    Band vs Sleeve

@@bloomie85 Here's the deal. You are going to get diehard fans of both sleeve and LapBand on here. You are going to have those who believe that their WLS is the only and best. They can find all kind of reasons why they are successful with the band or sleeve and others have failed. But the reality is, only YOU can choose what's best for you. A decision made with your medical team. As I said earlier, do your research and trust what your surgeon tells you. I was the biggest LapBand cheerleader in the world, until things started going bad. I believed that I would not have trouble because I did everything that was asked of me by my weight management center. I had regular routine care, but in the end, my LapBand slipped and I had a prolapsed stomach. I had swallowing issues and couldn't eat most solid Proteins. Yes, in the end I had my LapBand removed and revised to sleeve and I don't regret it for one minute. I no longer have to worry about food getting stuck and feeling like I'm going to die. I no longer have to go I for adjustments and pay thousands of dollars over the years in co pays. I can swallow my food and it goes down my throat. So if the worse thing that I have to deal with is no more Band adjustments, big deal. I'm not going to pretend that the sleeve is perfect, but I'm relieved that my band is gone. I will never again be so smug as to think that my decision is the only right decision because it's not.

    Band vs Sleeve

I had a LapBand placed in 2010 and revised to the sleeve in October. Please do a lot of research before you make a decision. Many surgeons aren't even doing the band anymore because of known complications. I had issues for three of the six years that I had a Band. The last year that numbers were posted, LapBand had dropped to 5% of all WLS. Sleeve is now the most common of all weight loss surgeries at more than 50%. I wish I had known about all the problems I would have-in the end, my esophagus got worn out from the work of pushing food through the restriction of the band. When I swallowed, food would sit in my throat. This is all my opinion, but also my honest experience. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
