  1. Watch Keto during weight loss because of its high fat requirement. My cholesterol levels went up a lot & my liver function went hay wire while I was losing weight even though I was eating low fat. All the bad cholesterol I had stored in my fat was being released into my blood stream as I was losing. Once I stopped losing my cholesterol levels dropped back to normal. My recommended pre surgery diet was keto (2 1/2 weeks only) but there’s no way I’d use it again because of the high fat - I don’t enjoy fatty foods at all.

    Major stall!!

Protein is very important post surgery & for your weight loss. Too little protein can actually hinder your weight loss. Check with your support team as to how much protein you should be including in your diet. I was told 60-70g per day during weight loss (60g in maintenance) but people are given different goals. Also ask your team what your calorie goal should be.
  3. It could be just the effects of surgery cause surgery & weight loss can cause a lot of our hormones, nutrient levels, etc. to go haywire. But if it is very high & persists yes it can be a problem. Though one that can be simply managed via regularly donating blood. Hemochromatosis can be an inherited condition or a side effect of other issues. It’s in our family & my brother has it. Don’t mean to scare you but it is something you should ensure your doctor monitors.

    Major stall!!

Congrats on your weight loss so far. Whoo hoo! Maybe measure & weigh your food again for a while & check calorie content. I’m an eye baller too but I know it can be easy to let the serving sizes slowly increase. Check to make sure the food you are eating is on your recommended diet. Are you still meeting your daily protein goals too? You sound pretty active and may need more. Good luck.
  5. I’m really sorry you are experiencing all this! It sucks and you have every right to feel crappy! I would try to follow what your surgeon says but if you need to throw a “snack” in there, I think if you are staying within your macros without grazing all day, then the snack is fine. As for the hair loss, I have no advice besides I’m so sorry. This is something I’m so nervous about myself. I have PCOS, and have been losing my hair for a couple years, so I’m very concerned how much worse it will get. I already have an area that’s very thin and I’m afraid it will push it to a bald spot. I keep trying to remind myself that it is temporary! It WILL grow back. Though I know it’s hard to keep telling yourself that. You have done such a great job getting to where you are at. Keep pushing along!! You have made such great strides already! Hugs.
  6. Hi all, When I finally decided to have WLS, I knew it would be self pay. My insurance just doesn't cover anything to do with bariatric or help with weightless. I really am not interested in going to Mexico. I prefer to have a doctor who if I need them, I can drive to in a matter of 3 or 4 hours (just in case). I thought I found that doctor. Did more homework and checked out his reviews and paid $400 for a consultation. I was super conformable with him and his staff. I knew that some tests and labs would need to be done - but DANG! When I called, before making the consultation appointment, the first thing I asked was the cost. I was told around $25K to $30K and they even sent me a couple of websites that they said some of their self-pay patients had good luck with on getting financing. (The 2 financing sites had a max amount of a loan as $35K) So I figured that was good since I wouldn't need the full max amount that the approval odds were in my favor. Now, with my lists of labs and tests in hand along with the other items that are required for this surgeon. I started calling the numbers they gave me for EKG, ECHO, Psych. Evaluation, Chest Xray, GI Swallow, etc... and the prices at this point this evening are totally $46,876 (that is with several of the places stating the the fees for the EKG is just the image, there will be extra fees for a doctor to review them) and I haven't called the hospital yet because they require a pre-op visit (which will of course have a huge fee). Just feeling deflated, and at a loss. I know (in theory) my health is priceless - but in the real world there really is a price tag and it is simply out of reach.... For everyone here at BP- you all have been an inspiration - no matter where you are at on your journey.
  7. What are some things you plan on rewarding yourself with as you hit your weight-loss goals? (Or health/fitness goals, etc.) I can only come up with a few: -new leggings -new Fitbit band (old one getting too big!) -new workout shoes
  8. Yesterday was my post op check up with the surgeon and it went well.  He is happy with my progress and I don't need to see him for 6 months.  I'm at day 17 post op and the only real issue I have had is severe constipation.  Warning, TMI coming up.....

So I have been number twos three times since surgery.  Twice it was tiny, third time was just an absolute crisis.  Crying, sweating, it was right there....just so horribly hard and dry.  I had to get pessaries and take Coloxyl.  Holy crap (pardon the pun) when she finally made it through, she was a stubby whopper.  I drink 2 litres a day, I have stopped taking the protein powder and don't take huge amounts of multi vitamins.  I am on puree now so having weetbix (an Australian/NZ breakfast biscuit) and veges for lunch and dinner.  I am going to look for some tea that helps with the issue, I simply can't go through that again.  It was two days ago and I still feel bruised.   I am not exercising much so will need to increase that too, I just don't want to be taking laxatives as a habit.

Aside from that my only bug bear is the draw to the scales every day.  I'm going to get my hubby to remove them and hide them from me and only weigh once a week to ensure I'm staying on track.  I'm still seeing losses all the time, but I'm becoming so focused on that I forget that the scales are only one part of the journey, my wellbeing is the other.

My son and his fiance are coming up from Melbourne this weekend and arrive tomorrow.  I haven't seen them both since Covid and I've missed them terribly.  I have some fun things organised, but I just can't wait to hug my first born and tell him how much I love him.

    Happy Friday-eve from down under.

I had a very similar experience. Twice. It was awful and a bit traumatizing, frankly. I thought I was going to have to take Miralax everyday for the rest of my life, but I can happily say that being 5.5 months out, things are fairly regular and I haven't had to take Miralax in over a month. I always make sure to get plenty of water, which has helped. Exercise will definitely help you in that department, too. Even just getting a walk in everyday will be good for your bowels. :)

Wish you the best on your journey!

    Major stall!!

Maybe consider starting to track your food again...weigh, measure, log, etc. Sometimes our guesstimates are not even close, and it is still important to get that protein in. Also, maybe try adding in some strength training with weights, bands, and/or body weight workout videos on YouTube. Mixing up your workout regimen is good for health and weight loss. You can do this! 💕
  10. Thank you. I can't help but be depressed. There are other things going on in my life (work & family) that are contributing factors, so this mess with my stall & my hair doesn't help. I feel like if I had a full head of hair (which was thin & fine, to begin with!) and was continuing to lose weight, it might help and feel like progress. I'm trying to stick to things as best as I can, but when the surgical staff says "stop snacking, only eat meals", it's hard! I just can't do it. I get stomachaches easily and do better with frequent snacks. I'm pretty much on a keto diet as it is. I just hope this stall breaks quickly... I have 50lb to go to get to my goal. Even if I don't fully reach it, I want to get close.
  11. Hi , I am a newbie still but I 'll share my input. Dont be depressed, you ve made alot of progress from what I can see in ur stats. My hair is thinning too at the middle parting and more hair falls out when I wash out. I am expecting it to get worse at some point so. I dont think we can do much but let it run its course . I havent stalled yet but my weight loss is a bit slow. So I am taking a more keto approach, having protein shakes and salads more. Keto might help you but general advice is to stick to your plan until the stall breaks.
  12. Good morning all, My last post (about a month ago) was about hair loss, a major stall, and some female issues. A month later, and nothing has changed, except maybe getting worse. The female issues are *hopefully* being addressed at an appointment next week, though I'm not sure what will happen. I'm still stuck at 181 and have been for almost two months. At one point, I got down to 178 for a few days, but I suddenly shot back up to 184 and have been bouncing between 180-183 forever now. It's SO depressing! My hair is falling out at a rapid pace. I know this is a common side effect, but I wasn't prepared for it to be this bad. I literally now have small, nearly bald patches and the texture of existing hair is like fine straw. 😞 Not only that, but it doesn't seem my hair is growing at all. I had it colored two weeks before Christmas, and no new growth is visible. My surgeon's staff keeps telling me I need to be better about getting my protein in, and I need to stick to three meals and no snacks meals. Well, that's difficult for me. Even a tiny meal takes me forever to eat...can't tell you the last time I finished a hot - or even warm - meal. And I feel like I get far less protein in. I find I do better eating small snacks throughout the day. Snacks include mini cucumbers, raw bell peppers, string cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, a couple of slices of low-sodium lunchmeat, tuna pouches, V8 juice, Builders Bars, beef jerky, etc. I add Unjury Powder (yuck!) to just about everything. I've also tried to make sure everything is SF and low sodium. When possible, I eat lots of chicken & fish, but I'm getting super tired of those things. I've come to realize I no longer enjoy food, whatsoever. I don't miss junk food (not that I ever really ate much of that anyway), but I miss going to a restaurant and ordering a meal to enjoy with my family. I take a couple of bites and am done - such a waste. My husband is a great cook, and I miss the meals he makes...I can't finish even the smallest filet, can only have a few bites of salmon, etc. I feel terrible when he cooks a beautiful, healthy meal and I can only have a few small bites. Anyway, sorry for the long post...just having a mini pity party for myself today.
  13. Try calling and speaking to your insurance personally. Sometimes you can't rely on what the doctor tells you. Generally though, it's put in at the weight you started at. Or at least that's what I was told. I was a MUCH larger BMI then you so the fact that I lost 68 pounds during my 6 month period didn't phase me or the doctor. My insurance took it as how they were meant to as it showed that I was serious about my weight loss and was putting in the needed effort to work with the tool they were giving me. Best of luck to you and I hope things work out!
  14. Oh jeez! 🙄 Life right now could have not been further off track for me. Here is the sum of all that's happened in a week! 1. I lost my 2-year Marketing Specialist job here in Dubai, United Arab Emirates - my role due to COVID is REDUNDANT and no longer required as APPRENTLY they don't have enough $$$ - but i know the whole story at the back end and who said what and all the politics. 2. I was on a weight-loss stall which FINALLY got over but then ^^^ that happened 3. I started feeling sick especially because i started vomiting up at least once a day 4. WHICH LED TO ME GETTING COVID 19 because HEY! us bariatric pals don't have a good immune system! So post op almost 2 months and IM SUPER SICK! i have Asthma as well. I have alllll the covid symptoms you can think of and I'm isolated in my home. Thankfully all my close contacts are fine but MAN O MAN does covid suck more when u CAN'T EAT ANYTHING! All I want is a big ass burger and a milkshake or SOME SORT OF SAVORY food item but i can't even keep down protein let alone SOUP! It's been horrible - my nutritionist said i should just try to EAT or DRINK whatever i can at this moment. But BUT! there is a brighter yet a little worrying side. Ive lost about 3kgs! in 3 days. (sorta happy in a selfish way) but i have such a strong feeling ill gain it back as soon as I'm covid free. but hey! 1.5 months and I've lost nearly 20 kgs! WOOT WOOT! haha.. trying to not die between these 4 walls so I'm trying to look at the brighter side. However every inch of my body hurts as i cough up a storm. Is anyone in a situation like me? I hope not but if u are - let's relate? Btw i posted an image here pre-op in my first post ever id like to post it again next to a recent one -> could use the motivation to stay breathing 1. Me at 130kgs 2. Me at 116 kgs same dress 3. Me at 113kg
  15. I also have thyroid issues...currently on synthroid and liothyronine. The little amount of weight I have lost thus far has been hard fought and so, I have been wondering how this will play into weight loss after surgery. I think @Deb9386 might be on to something with the meds...(Good luck with the endno doc - crossing my fingers for you!) Hopefully we can all find that fine line of what amounts we need to take. It has been a long battle trying to get that number correct...I have a feeling it may continue to be one. But, the great news is that your doctor actually has agreed you have a thyroid issue. Most don't even bother testing for it. Good Luck everyone. I will make sure to post my results as I go along....
  16. Nah, not weird, just an alternative response. I'm the same way, if someone asks me how many lbs, I tell them. And if they ask how it was done, I say I ate way less than I used to. After that, I started getting annoyed, so I changed the subject. Almost nobody asks or comments about weight loss anymore though, its old news.
  17. Hi guys - I'm in a similar boat. Sleeved March 2015 at 292lbs. Got down to 177lbs. Was pretty happy there but was aiming for 165. Started to gradually gain - by Jan 2020 I was up to 200, and then because of the pandemic and lockdown (boredom eating mainly) I was up to 220 this January. So I've not regained all my weight, but still regained about 40% of it. I'm on week three of trying to lose my regain. Down 10lbs so far (but some of that in week 1 was probably water weight). This is what has been working for me: 1. Keep it simple. It's calories in vs calories out. I tried Keto for two days and was so miserable that it was never going to be sustainable. So I'm just going for a straightforward trying to consume 1000 calories less than I burn each day - i.e. less than 1750. 2. Within that calorie allowance, I allow myself to eat anything I want, subject to the following rules. 3. My first calories get used on a protein heavy breakfast, lunch and dinner. Only after I've logged all of those do I get to incorporate snacks. 4. No drinking with meals or 30 minutes either side of a meal. But otherwise lots of water. 5. No fizzy drinks except at weekends. I never had a calorie problem with fizzy drinks as my weakness was Diet Coke. But now I only drink sugar-free cordial (Robinson's Orange and Mango or Orange and Pineapple for those in the UK). 6. If I want a snack, I have to have a drink (water or cordial) first to see if that stops the craving. 7. Everything - and I mean everything - I eat is measured and recorded on MyFitnessPal before I eat it. It helps me see the impact of a particular choice on my calorie levels for the day, and sometimes leads me to make a different choice. 8. Six days of the week, I must be under 1750 calories. One day a week (usually Sunday) I allow myself up to 2500 calories but only if I have 'banked' enough calories during the week. So if, say, on Monday I consume 1500 calories rather than 1750, those 250 go into the bank and I allow myself to use them on Sunday (up to the maximum of 2500, which is roughly what I burn in an average day of activity). I've been doing that since 4 January, and have gone from 220lbs to 210lbs. I am aiming for 2lb loss a week for the next three months, and then to slow it down to about 1lb a month for another three or four months.

    Backlash??

My weight loss surgery and nearly 4 stone weight loss so far means that I am considerably less likely to require intensive medical intervention if I contract Covid, so reducing the potential burden on hospitals. It has also meant that I have come out of the diabetic level which I was just about in, again reducing potential healthcare demands. Elective surgery can save lives. Some people are just unpleasant and probably at the moment don't have anything better to do than troll others online. Just ignore them!

    No Support from Husband

I agree with everything that others have said about your husband's behaviour being totally out of order - that is just not how to respond to someone you love when they're making a difficult decision. I also had to have a CPAP machine a number of years ago - my husband made fun of me but in a lighthearted and jokey way (making fun of the way it made my look like Darth Vader etc). But that's really different from trying to influence you into making decisions that are not right for you or your health. All I would say, so you're fully prepared: the surgery can make you super emotional. When I had it, there were times in the hospital when I would burst out crying (I was a 30 year old guy and not a crier normally). When I came home, one day I just burst out crying. I think it's a combination of hormonal responses to surgery, plus there is an element of 'grieving' for loss of food you have had an unhealthy relationship with, plus even though you won't be able to eat, you may still have head hunger. All of that plays havoc with our emotions. It's fine, and it definitely passes - for me, I was quite down for about two weeks after surgery and then felt tons better. But I say all of this because when you feel like that, that is when you most need to be around someone who can support you. There will probably be times after having surgery when you think it was the biggest mistake of your life. You need someone who can remind you why you did it, and someone who can make you feel better about yourself. If there is somewhere else you could stay while you recover (you mentioned extended family?) then that may be something to consider. If not, please do just mentally prepare for how you'll feel, and make sure you have people you can call, whether it's friends or a counsellor, or who can visit you, who will help to lift you up.

    Backlash??

Please ignore the naysayers, do not even engage with them, its a bit a like religion and politics, we aren't going to change their stance and they aren't going to change our stance. There will be some who believe we should be open and tell our weight loss surgeries to all and sundry, be an advocate for it. That is not our responsibility, our responsibility is to our own well being, and if that means keeping it private to ourselves and/or trusted family or friends so be it.
  21. Has to be your decision of course - I was finding it extremely difficult to lose weight prior to surgery and post-surgery I am losing without any real difficulty, even if the rate of weight loss is slower than other peoples. I had over 5 stone to lose and just knew that I wouldn't be able to do this without surgery. Part of the issue for my hypothyroidism is that I think my medication isn't at the correct level - I have never been able to get a referral on the NHS by my family doctor to an endocrinologist and looking at thyroid forums my family doctor isn't doing all of the blood tests that should be done and won't consider doing them (cost to the NHS). Because of the system here in the UK I'd have to get a private appt with the endocrinologist and then it's difficult to get the ongoing treatment plan/blood tests provided via the NHS so I'd have a large ongoing financial cost. If your medication is controlling your hypothyroidism effectively then you might have better/quicker weight loss?
  22. Thankfully He & my other surgeon both agree I don't have any of the supporting symptoms that would indicate a clot. I had an appt with my Dr today. Its likely my gate shifting from an 88 lb loss in 8 months, 68 lbs since Aug 24th along with some possible deficit in one or more of my vitamins. If the bloodwork doesn't show any deficit I will be assessed for restless leg but its likely the muscles readjusting to my walking pattern and activity levels.

    Diet soda

I used to be addicted to Diet Coke. I mean, you would think there was actually cocaine in it, the way I was driven to seek the dopamine release it gave me. I would even dream about it. Once I quit, it took 3 full years before my car stopped trying to drive itself through the McDonald's drive-thru for a large size, dollar Diet Coke. The addiction is real! Anyway, for me this weight loss journey meant learning to live in a new and healthier way - for life. I had surgery for my health, so it made no sense to continue habits that were not healthy - not when I paid so much money for the surgery and made such sacrifices to lose the weight. That meant getting rid of the stuff that was not conducive to a healthy lifestyle, soda included. Any kind of soda is terrible on your teeth, bad for your surgical site, and even diet sodas can trigger insulin release that results in fat storage - not fat breakdown. Soda is also listed in the medical literature as one factor in the development of Fatty Liver Disease. I had fatty liver, and WLS gave me back a new, nonfatty one. So why in the world would I feed it soda again??? There are more than a few studies that show diet soda drinkers actually gain more weight than people who drink regular soda. Anyway, I'm not trying to preach at anyone, but just asking folks to consider choosing the best and healthiest options for your new life, rather than flirting with foods and drinks that perhaps tripped you up in the first place, and that can hinder your long term success.
  24. I worry if the sleeve is for me due to my hypothyroid. If the rate of weight loss is still super slow I keep thinking maybe I shouldn't go through with it.
  25. Definitely not my back, I've lost huge amounts of weight in the past with these back issues but today I spoke to my Dr. Hes going to look at my new bloodwork this week but based on my supplement intake and symptoms he suspects its my muscles shifting due to the fast loss of 86 lbs or it could be restless leg syndrome. I won't know for sure til after my bloodwork comes back and I see my primary. Ugh.. For now my heating pad and tylenol are my best friends lol
