  1. I wouldn't try tuna with yogurt. Sounds absolutely ghastly! It's been my experience with the NUTS that I've worked with in the hospital, that discussing fats is difficult. They don't tend to be big on any fat, bad or good.
  2. Bufflehead

    Greek Yogurt

I like the Voskos brand Greek yogurt, as well as Brown Cow and sometimes Chobani. I am a yogurt snob and won't eat any yogurt that isn't 100% natural. I refuse to put artificial sweeteners or flavors in it. All natural yogurt will have a few more carbs, so I just eat low carb elsewhere, or don't eat as much of the yogurt.
  3. I would say, by definition, I was a slow loser. I had a total of 80.5 lbs that I wanted to lose to my goal after I had my surgery. In the first 6 months, I lost 55 lbs. Then, it slowed to a crawl. In the next 6 months, I lost 21.5 lbs I stalled at this point for 3 months and I actually thought I might be done losing, then I lost 3 more pounds, now at 15 months post op. Once again I stalled for about 2 months and thought I was done losing, still about 5 or so pounds from goal, but I was really that worried about those 5lbs. Then, 18 months post op, I hit my goal weight of 140lbs and 80.5 lbs lost. In the months following, I dropped a few more pounds! Now I have a 3-4 pound weight fluctuation. My cycle is a major factor in how much I weigh, so I try not to let it bother me. I can go up as much as 2 or 3 lbs during ovulation and 3-4 lbs during TOM. My weight loss near the end only really occurred in the 2 weeks in between Tom and ovulation, so I highly encourage women to really pay attention to their bodies. I also get wicked cravings and have a very hard time not wanting to eat everything in my path. How do I cope with the cravings? I do not keep anything in my house that I know I will eat. Now I am over 2 years post op and have not had many issues maintaining for the last 8 months. I am still learning as I go and I still make mistakes. But over all I would say I eat healthy 90% of the time, and 10% of the time I don't. If I am going to be truthful, I never counted anything (calories, carbs, protein), I never weighed anything, and I don't exercise by definition regularly. I did follow my post op guidelines. I rarely eat bread (but I will eat garlic bread when out for supper) and I eat very little other "white carbs" like rice, Pasta, flour, sugar (notice that I did not say never). I do not drink with my meals, I still occasionally drink Protein shakes, I eat a lot of greek yogurt sweetened with stevia, drink 2% milk, eat nuts, and enjoy veggies AND fruits. I will still have an ice cream cone once in a while, I will still eat chocolate and I will still have other treats as well. I just do not keep them in my house so they are not tempting because I do not have any more will power now than before surgery if food is sitting in front of me (hence a 4 lbs weight gain over Christmas that I am happy to report is all gone again). I wanted to make changes that I know I could live with, maintain, and be happy with for the rest of my life. I am happy with the weight I lost, and even though it was slower in the "sleeve" world, it was still faster than any other time I had tried to lose weight in my life. My new habits are firmly entrenched, and even if I stumble now (like Christmas), it is not difficult to get my head back in the game. I would not change what I did and how I did it and I love this tool that I have been given!
  4. Am I the only one who has had post-surgery complications? I tried to find the post-surgery thread but it appears to have disappeared!!! I ended up being re-hospitalized five days after my surgery because I had paralytic ileus - essentially my intestines just stopped moving entirely and nothing - including gas - could go anywhere. It was extremely painful. I was in hospital for four days. Now I am back home but I am having trouble with the incision over my port - it came partially open when they took the staples out and while it is not open all the way to the port (i.e. it is partially healed) it is an ugly mess. I have to go to the clinic every day to have my bandages changed and for it to be irrigated and checked, and it's going to heal into a massive, massive scar. One of the surgeons from the team who treated me reassured me that they could "revise" the scar later and right now we have to focus on saving the port - which of course makes sense - but after having so many complications it's hard not to be discouraged. I am on antibiotics for the open incision. At least I have not have any trouble swallowing at all. I am at the pureed foods stage and have had yogurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal, and pureed sphagetti sauce (with meat in it) no problem. My stomach is so happy to have real food in it again! For lunch today I'm going to try scrambled eggs and for supper mashed potatoes with some pureed apple pork. I'm eating under 1000 calories a day and not having any trouble sticking with those portions - I already have 3 ml in my band. From when I started the pre-surgery diet I am down 20 lbs, 2 pants sizes, and my BMI is down almost 4 points. So it's working. But no more complications, please!!!

    August Sleevers Check In

I was sleeved on 8/14. Struggled with nausea and some vomiting + dry heaves the first 24 hours after surgery. Took a few tries to find something that helped. So I got an extra night's stay. (In Thurs. and out Saturday). The few days following I kept getting stomach/chest/back pains that came and went. I was expecting the incisions to bug me but not this. And this really hurt :-( So after a rough night Monday night, I called the dr.'s first thing Tuesday. I was asked if I could come in. So of course I did. Initial exam was fine. No real alarm bells per se, but they ordered some blood work and an ESD. By the time I was done, the Dr. had the results and ends up I developed acid reflux. (I actually saw it on the ESD) Never had any issues before. The acid could also have been behind the nausea in the hospital. So my PPI was doubled and I was told I could take Tums if also needed. It's believed that this will go away as the swelling goes away. Hope so! So now I'm doing fine. Getting all of my protein and fluids in. Definitely getting tired of yogurt, apple sauce, and protein shakes all ready, lol. Just 2.5 weeks until pureed :-)
  8. I like getting a high protein nonfat Greek yogurt (I use fage nonfat), putting in some organic unsweetened cocoa (I use Cocoavia cardio health), and mixing in sugar free maple syrup (I use Maple Grove farms no sugar syrup) to sweeten it. Tastes so good. I wish I knew about this recipe when I was in the puree stage but I just recently found it somewhere on the net. I don't even remember where.

    Hello I'm new!

Hey yall! Good luck to the preOpers and good work to the postOpers! Just wanted to share my fave way to get proteins and veggies in. I use my protein powder (Combat Protein Powder cookies and cream flavor, by Muscle Pharm from Costco). Then I add about a cup of fresh spinach leaves (from the bags in produce dept), a half of banana, some milk, ice, and peanut butter powder (PB2). Throw it all in the blender and u get a yummy nutritious protein shake! U can't taste the spinach at all! The drink has a light green color but it is wayyyyyy tastier then the protein shakes alone! The spinach helps me use the bathroom without taking pills. There's so many different things u can add to the shakes to agree with your taste buds cuz the shakes alone kid of were hard to get down even preop! Look for different ways to make them. Greek yogurt and peanut butter also adds more protein to the shake which is always a plus! Another tasty treat is Fat free sugar free black cherry jello mixed with greek yogurt! Again adds lots of protein even as a snack- it reminds me of jello with whipped cream when u mix it up. I also live on SF and FF Popsicles and Fudgicles! Very low cal snack that soothes my sweet cravings! I wish lots of luck to everyone who's sleeved or getting sleeved! Knock it out the park people!!!! ✌️

Nutritionist was NO help at all

I was told any non-caffeinated beverage counts toward the 64 oz of fluid requirement. And that includes protein shakes. I think some people who are lactose intolerant can handle cheese and yogurt - the fermentation and/or aging weakens the lactose - or something like that. Although I don't know if that's universally true. but other than that, yea - it sounds like she's not listening to you. I would have been mad, too
  11. I did the sleeve on 12/13/16 surgical weight was 190 losing 9 pounds in pre op diet. Now just over 6 weeks I am 163. But I feel I still can't tolerate a lot of soft food diet. so I resort to protein shakes and protein water. trying my best to get my protein from proper food but still can't get enough as I feel so full from just a 1-2 teaspoon. however, I tolerate very well plain yogurt or yogurt with fruit. a slice of small cracker cheddar cheese a day. I can eat soft boiled egg but that will keep me full for a long time. yesterday i tried white fish one half hand size fillet. it was so delicious but I just felt so full as if I ate one and half a chicken (as I used to eat before). I have always been a massive protein eater. Not complaining, it is great. But I am wondering what is your thoughts in getting real protein at this stage. knowing everyone is different. how frequent do you eat. Because even though i'm losing weight i fear i'm losing the good weight (muscles) rather than fat.
  12. Revs! Good news on the sleep! I'm glad you found a fix until this sorts itself out. Yes food choices, I'd keep it a bit bland for now. your stomach sounds like it's just not ready for much yet... I raise my yogurty spoon to yours in a show of solidarity! (Yes I'm eating yogurt)

The Natural Diet Solution For PCOS.......

LOL! I know going meatless is not for everyone. I could honestly go without the meat because I've never been a big meat eater anyway. Congratulations, you made it to Onederland!! That is soooo great. I am sooo proud of you!! I had a yogurt this morning. I know that's not in the diet but I tried eating an apple and I was just too tight this morning. A lot tighter than I have been. It was the only thing I had in the house that would go down easy. My main goal is to eat more "live" foods, making sure I am eating fresh veggies and fruit. I made an appointment for a fill on Thursday. For the past few weeks, I haven't had much restriction at all, even in the mornings. Now I don't know if I should get one. I've been stuck on this plateau for a while now and I am so ready to get past it. Maybe I should just get a really small fill and see what happens, like .25cc or something. My last fill was only .5cc and it did really good for a while. I have a total of 6.5cc right now. What do you think?

The Natural Diet Solution For PCOS.......

It seems very compatible with the band. You can eat lean meats (beef has to be free range fed only, which might be a challenge for me because I don't know where to get it), chicken breast and turkey (no skin), fish and shrimp (not breaded or fried), organic or free range eggs (cooked on the lowest heat possible). You can have a large variety of vegetables, fruits, and nuts (though there are certain ones that are forbidden). No grains and no dairy on this diet. The grains I don't mind, but I'll have a hard time giving up my yogurt, lol. This is not just a losing weight diet for me, I am doing this so my PCOS symptoms can get under control too. So to answer your question, I think it's very compatible in regards to what is suggested by my nutritionist. Every nutritionist doesn't suggest the same things but mine suggests eating Protein first, then a non-starchy veggie, then if there's room eat a piece of fruit, then bread last. So it definitely works for what my nutritionist recommends. Good luck to you however you decide to work your band.

The Natural Diet Solution For PCOS.......

LOL! I wondered how you ate so many taco's so early in the day, lol. I didn't do too bad today, here's what I had: B'fast- weight watcher's yogurt Lunch- 4 whole (pretty big) strawberries, 6 fresh blackberries, 12 almonds Snack- weight watcher's yogurt Dinner- 5 chicken nuggets  I go for a fill tomorrow, so I will be on liquids for 3 days. I haven't been feeling very good today at all. I will probably go see my family doctor tomorrow too. A while back, my son got staph infection from some shots he received at the hospital. He had a rough time with it but finally got rid of it. Well, after that, my dad got it too, on his arm and in his nose. He finally got rid of his and now I think I have it. I have a huge knot on my inner thigh that is red and infected. I also have a knot inside my nose that is infected. The whole left side of my face hurts and throbs. It's not fun and I feel pretty miserable. Hopefully I'll find out what's going on tomorrow. Hope you kiddo feels better too!
  16. I could eat a 5.3 oz yogurt at 3 weeks and maybe more , but I don't I measure my food in a 4 oz container I bought at gfs and just don't eat more than that.

    Headaches?

My counsellor at WLF said they want us to eat plan, greek yogurt - if we need to add vanilla (a drop for baking) to it that makes it yummy or spices (eg. Epicure spice dip mixes) or even add in some crystal light powder to flavour it. even greek yogurt with vanilla already in it has stuff we should probably never eat. It's all just a new life ....
  19. 2 weeks- 15lbs. 2 shakes a day and one protein meal, a snack of cottage cheese, yogurt, or fruit and all the veggies I wanted (minus the starchy ones- corn, potato.. etc.).
  20. Oikos Pro yogurt. 20g of protein per cup. Vanilla and Peach are my favorites. Mix with fruit serving or a bit of granola for crunch. edited to add: I also have used the 3 ounce proteins shots. The taste isn’t so good but it’s only 3 ounces and gives you I believe 20 to 30 g of protein.
  21. I started losing my hair at 2 months post-op and it stopped after my dietician recommended that I drink an ounce or 2 of keifer per day which was at 4 months post-op. I did it for a month because she didn't tell me how long I needed to until the next month when I went back for my visit and I was only supposed to do it for a week. However, it seemed to reset my gut microbes and helped with a the constant nausea I was having. I feel as though I can relate to what you've been going through. I've been losing slowly myself and they have me tracking all of my foods so that I am noticing how many carbs I am eating. My program suggests limiting carbs to 30 grams per day. I find this extremely difficult especially after the surgery because I get really tired after eating a higher protein meal. I do meal prep. I take a cup of chicken and marinate it in different marinades, cook it and I freeze it in small containers so that I have snacks or ready cooked protein for meals. I keep cottage cheese, boiled eggs, and string cheese or cubed cheese handy in the fridge. I have tried to change all my high carb foods like potato chips, ice cream, and milk to the high protein versions. I get the quest high protein chips, fairlife milk, and if I want any ice cream I get the yasso greek yogurt frozen bars. My biggest problem is the vending machine at work. Cheez-its are my kryptonite and I'm just really lucky that the past 3 weeks they haven't restocked the machine with Cheez-its 🤣. I have a hard time with drinking the no sugar drinks like diet coke or coke zero. Too many of any diet drink and my stomach is upset. Also, I'm having a hard time with drinking plain water because I don't like the taste. When I saw the dietician this month she suggested that I get an infuser water bottle and it's helping. She told me that I needed to make sure that I was drinking enough water, reaching my protein goals, and try to keep my carbs as close to 30 as I can. She also suggested that I start doing some cardio every day 15-30 minutes. I have lost a total of 60 pounds including 15 before the surgery. I still want to lose another 30-40 pounds and I'm 7months post-op. I've only been losing about 5 lbs each month since about 2 months post-op. I'm hoping to see more weight loss with the changes that I keep implementing. I was very discouraged when I started noticing everything that I was doing but my doctor and dietician were so supportive. They were very encouraging and told me that the surgery is my tool but that I would have to make some long-term lifestyle changes and the fact that I'm noticing what I'm doing and trying to make corrections that I was still on the right path. I'm sure that you will also reach your goals and the hair loss will stop eventually. Once the hair loss stops you'll have a bunch of baby hairs growing in 😁.
  22. Convenience is also a thing to consider. For example, Jello makes ready-made sugar free Jello cups and sugar free chocolate pudding cups. I always have these on hand for my chocolate craving that pops up every now and then. I also always keep Sarrgento low fat mozzarella string cheese and lower fat Babybels on hand. I always have Chobani zero sugar Greek yogurt on hand as well. I know you said it makes you gag right now and I went through something similar because i honestly dislike Greek yogurt but I have learned to eat it. I buy multiple flavors to keep it "fresh". I can finally eat fresh fruit and vegetables so I buy a bag of frozen blueberries to add to my yogurt cup. That really helps the yogurt go down smoothly. I also still drink a Premier protein Chocolate Peanut butter ready-made shake every day. That is the only one I can get down without difficulty although the cookies and creme does taste just like Oreos! Maybe try a different brand/flavor of protein shake. I'm 3.5 months post sleeve and just met with my nutritionist. They love protein shakes for us and told me to continue to drink them. I have not had bread, pasta or rice since my surgery 3.5 months ago. That was something I prepared myself for prior to surgery. I will make enough dinner to have it as a leftover for lunch at work the next day. There are so many lower fat/ no sugar options. Use cauliflower rice instead of regular rice. Add salsa to it and you have Spanish rice! Use zoodles or spaghetti squash for pasta substitute. Use a lettuce leaf instead of bread for burgers. Use plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Dip veggies in hummus or ranch dip made with greek yogurt for more protein. I think if you make changes as everyone has suggested you will be successful on your journey. Don't get discouraged because you've already realized you need to change how you eat. That is already a win for you! Good luck, I know you will be ok! We are always here for support!

    yogurt after surgery

yep - the others are correct. It's the added sugar that they want you to avoid (or really limit). Most of the sugar in yogurt (unless it's got added sugar in it because of the flavorings) is lactose, which is naturally occurring in milk. I eat yogurt every day and have since my surgery nine years ago. I eat very little meat, so having Greek yogurt for breakfast starts my day off with a good amount of protein.

    June Sleevers!

I was sleeved on the 4th. I was to begin softs- eggs, cheeses, Peanut Butter, yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, soy milk- this past Monday. I am having such a hard time getting my fluids in that my doc wants me to add another Protein shake to the 1 I'm already doing and just work on my fluids. He says to try stuff as I feel up to it. Laughing cow cheese wedge and a mozzarella cheese stick have gone down okay. Took forever to eat tho. I just tried a taste or two of peanut butter and so far so good. Completely creamy Soups seem to be alright. Have to go very slow w/those tho. Monday, I can add tuna, canned chicken, Beans, fish, seafood, nuts. Not sure. I'm looking forward to tuna. Hope it goes well! LOL! I was told to re-start everything 5 days out. Everything I have is chewable. I've heard others say they started right away while others were told to wait longer than I was.
  25. I used to adore milk chocolate and I find it sickeningly sweet now. In the same vein, I thought dark chocolate was horrid pre-surgery but I absolutely love it now. I also love iced coffee now and rarely had it before. I can't stand tortillas anymore... it just feels like a giant mass of dough in my mouth. I also really don't care for pork anymore. It just seems really rich now. I now love greek yogurt, chicken wings, and eggs; all of which I rarely ate in my old life. I'm sure there is other stuff but I can't think of it right now. Amanda
