    4weeks out

I am 4 weeks out and am allowed anything basically except raw vegetables. I can eat chicken and turkey no problem. Dr said I can start raw nuts too I can eat more than I did a week ago but know I have to limit myself. Yesterday I made turkey chili and ate a few extra bites I shouldn't have. I was full and miserable. Lesson learned! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    First bite of pureed foods

My first taste of food after liquid was KFC mashed taters and gravy per my NUT's advice. They are low fat, thin and so tasty. It was the best thing ever after three weeks of almost all sweet protein shakes, yogurt and pudding.

    Melt Down!

Last night was my first melt down since I had this surgery.....I told my husband I did not want to do this anymore...I felt so under pressure this past week.....4 times I went places that have dealt with me as a customer and no one recognized me...It was fun the first couple of times but then it started to get annoying. Then I was in a shop with my daughter and she lost me, I was almost standing right in front of her and she did not recognize me.... This past week, my daughter would not stop staring at me....She kept making comments about how proud she is of me....That's okay....But everyone watched how much I ate and watched me eat....I was made to try on clothes which I hate doing and found that some of them I can't wear because I missed them..oops... My husband said oh, I can't believe you ate that much fish..Would not have thought you could fit it in your sleeve.....I looked at him and asked if he thought I was eating too much...He said no..I am just surprised!....This set me off....As that night I decided I was only eating fish for dinner. Last night I told him that the pressure is getting too much that people who are supporting me are smothering me and watching everything I do! This is all strange to me as well as it is for them....I am not used to becoming a smaller me..... I just want to do this for me and it is like what ever they say or do is driving me up the wall......

  7. We've all experienced the typical ways of not fitting into the world... restaurant booths, airplane seats, amusement park rides, chairs with arms, student desks, regular sized blood pressure cuffs, etc. Friday I had to have a cardiac stress test in order to get cardiac clearance for VSG surgery. It's one of the last steps I have before getting insurance approval. In the nuclear medicine area of my doctor's office, there is a waiting room with a little alcove where they put the IV port in. There is no door on this alcove. I can hear everything the tech is saying to each person as he explains the procedure and puts in the IV and then sends them back to the waiting room.. Most of the people there are over 65 or so, and I know some of them are hard of hearing, just from observing them in the waiting room. I'm 50, and definitely not hard of hearing. So when it's my turn, and the tech stars his spiel, I stop him and tell him I've heard him give it about four times now. Then suddenly he stops, and in that same loud voice, says he's not sure I'll fit into the imaging machine. So when there is an empty machine he takes me in there to make sure I'm going to fit. It does, just barely, go over me. When I come out of that room to go back to the alcove, every eye in the waiting room is on me. I don't get embarrassed easily, and being fat doesn't embarrass me. I wasn't embarrassed that everyone knew that I might be too fat for the machine... they all have eyes, they can all see how big I am. Normally, I would have schooled the person on how they should treat fat people, so that other fat people aren't embarrassed. But for some reason, this time I didn't. I'm not really sure why. I have a followup appointment in two weeks and I might bring it up then. Anyway, yet another example of how I don't fit into the world. That's my main reason for getting the surgery, I want to fit into the world.

    Sex after the Band

I don't know, because I haven't tried yet. I am only two weeks post op.
  9. Hi everyone! My name is Kris and I live near Cleveland, Ohio. I'm 36 years old, single with no kids. I'm still in the research phase and haven't made any decisions yet. I have a seminar to attend next week and the week after I'm meeting with my general physician to talk about all my options before I go to my first consultation. Growing up I was always the skinny kid in the neighborhood. I was a size 6 until my early 20's. Since then I've steadily gained weight. I've tried every diet out there. Some worked, some didn't. I lost weight only to gain it back plus more. I've done Weight Watchers which is really the only thing that actually worked but once I stopped paying the fee I gained all the weight back. After reading some of the threads here I have a couple of concerns and/or questions... I've been in and out of therapy since my late 20's for personal matters not directly related to my weight. About a year ago I had an appointment with my Psychiatrist for a prescription refill appointment and I broke down and told him that I had been using laxatives on and off for the past 6+ years to lose weight. (As much as they say laxatives don't work for weight loss, they lie because it has always worked for me). Since the admission to him I've also had to come "clean" with my regular doctor and my therapist. Early 2007 I had lost about 30 pounds and was up to 15 laxatives a day. I stopped taking them in July and gained all the weight back plus 10. I know laxatives are bad so I'm not looking for any lectures but its a problem that I'm trying really hard to work past. It's almost like an addiction. Every time I eat a bite of food I think about taking a pill. *sigh* anyway.... My question is... will this end up hurting my chances to be approved for the surgery? Another concern I have is the cost. I called my insurance company and they said the surgery is not covered. Has anyone fought their insurance company and won? If not, how were you able to afford the surgery??? I'm really glad I found this site. I just mentioned to my sister tonight that I was thinking about getting the lap band hoping I'd have her support but all I heard was "how stupid" the idea was! ~kris
  10. Hello all, I had my lap band surgery done on June 16, 2008 and a port revision done November 19,2008. I started at 226 lbs and now weigh 195. The majority of the weight came off before the surgery during my two week liquid diet. I would like to hit 135 as a high goal weight, but at this point I am focusing on breaking through 190. I have refocused and started tracking my foods more carefully and really trying to be more accountable. I have my 4th fill this month on the 22nd - hopefully that will get me just right. Anyways, just wanted to share and introduce myself
  11. The first couple of weeks is really hard anyone who is deprived food is thinking about food and that's a tough thing. Is when you jump on the scale and you've lost that first 20 pounds that you realize it's all worth it and you don't think about food so much anymore . Once you start to feel 100 percent you look at food in a totally different light because if you fall backwards in the things you use to eat you know what's going to happen but you push yourself forward in a positive direction and it all works out I would dream about chocolate rivers and now I can't stand the smell of chocolate since surgery so it's better to dream about food then actually put it in your mouth in regret it later. If you're wide awake you might wanna do a little meal chart or activity chart of the meals and exercises you going to do. Try reading

    Shopping help

Ok I'm finally down to an 18 in pants which I plan to continue to shop at old navy, lane Bryant, and target for those but I'm now wearing an xl or even large in some tops. I go to those three stores and that's fine but I want to venture out some for shirts. I don't want to go to a store though that runs small and look silly or feel sad trying and not fitting. So I would love some suggestions for places that have xl that runs regular or even a tad big. Any help from ppl who already have explored
  13. Congratulations on the loss! Wow! Isn't is crazy how long it takes to feel smaller? I just went through all of my clothes and tried EVERYTHING on. I had to get rid of lots of clothes that I was hanging on to. I was waiting to fit into 1/2 of my wardrobe, but now it is too big. I can't wait for my brachioplasty and 360 lift! I'm going for a consult in a couple of weeks! Let us know how it goes! That is super exciting! Banded 2010. Sleeved Dec 2016 122 lbs lost

    BANDLAND

Well I DID make it. Not without some quick thinking and shuffling, but I did it. I got to Mexico and was informed that I'd have to have the surgery that same day! I was a little nervous, had to mentally prepare myself (thought I'd at least get a good last meal in...) but I came to get banded so lets get on with it! The process was as good as I've ever been through in a US hospital. Very comforting nurses and procedures were identical to those in U.S. I was glad to get back home a couple of days later though, nothing like your own bed. I'm almost a week post-op and am starting thick liquids. This has been MUCH more satisfying to me. I'm not that hungry (mainly 'head' hunger) I am taking each day as a learning experience. I look forward to the day that my band and I will become good friends  We are learning each other right now, and I am an open book, willing to learn and make new chapters in my life, with its help.
  15. I decided in April 2016, went to a seminar, then had to complete at 6 month physician supervised weight loss program. I was approved within a week of completing it and had the procedure on 10/26/2016. No problems with approval as it is covered under my insurance, I completed the 6 months. Started with a BMI of 53 and had co-morbidities (diabetes and sleep apnea). Good Luck!

    Weights?

I just wanted to ask if anyone had any complications from lifting weights after surgery? I am 7 weeks post op and have lost 40 pounds so far, but I know to keep losing I need to exercise more. I have been doing a few light weights...ab machines...leg press, etc....nothing too heavy along with aerobic activity. I did speak with a nurse at my doctor's office this morning and she stated that everything should be fine; however, I am self pay and certainly cannot afford any complications. I would appreciate any help! Thank you!

    Surgery on March 12th!

I am already a veteran of. 1 open abdominal incision, I have my Bari Bear just waiting, I bought him off Valentine Clearance at Wally World for $1.25 because I knew he had the right dimensions. No I didn't try him out in public on my belly, I just eye-balled him. Now to get my surgery, no further developements as yet. I arise every morning and then get more and more disappointed as the day goes on. I am impatient, it hasn't even been a full week yet. Yeah Rome wasn't built in a day but it would have been had I been in charge of the project! I go around singing " do they love me? I've got to know, if they don't please tell me so!" Yes I'm a tired old 60s song! I hope-a , I wanna I need it so! Yep there I go again, hope I don't go into my second childhood before I get to finish my current adulthood. Stuck with weight loss lapband

If you're truly eating 800 calories a day and then burning 1000 calories during exercise, you're doing your metabolism a HUGE disservice... Look, your body NEEDS food to survive. Your brain alone uses 25% of your energy consumption. Digestion and respiration use a good deal of energy as well. In order for your body to operate, you need a minimum calorie allowance of usually 1200 calories. MINIMUM. If you drop below that minimum, your body WILL panic. A panicking body slows the systems down so they require less fuel. You do this long enough and your body will start to think it doesn't need as many calories after all and your metabolism TANKS. This isn't good. It's starvation, and your body is fighting to survive. If your NUT approves of this sort of extremism, you need to find a new doctor. Try increasing the amount of food you eat and cut back on the exercise, slowly, over time. In a few weeks when you get to a sane eating and exercise pattern you should see the weight come off. Do it soon before you do any serious damage to your body. Your lap band should NOT be a tool to make you drop weight in 7 weeks for a stupid reunion. What you're doing is irresponsible and unhealthy.

Hello to all, beautiful day in Massachusetts. yet sad for me

I think going to the beach is the thing I miss the most. We went to Florida several years ago, spent a week. I was one of the fat people and blended in with several others, but refused to walk down the beach in fear that I would run across the skinny people. Always fearing as you walk by those that are lined up in their chairs they are looking at each other thinking "Good God, look at her."

    Checking the Boxes

I'm filling out some forms for my Psyche evaluation that is scheduled for 05/30. I can't help but wonder if I'm writing 3/4 of the report the guy is going to send the insurance company! I had a brief conversation with this guy when I scheduled my appointment. It sounds like he is a non-value-added checkbox along my path of this journey. He has no specific training in obesity issues, doesn't even appear to be a full-time psychologist (only available nights and week-ends). I asked him what his qualifications were for performing the evaluation; his response was that his wife had been through the surgery. Doesn't seem like much of a qualification. My husband will be happy to know that he'll expand his career options once I have the surgery! Oh well...I'm already working with a psychologist on my own. The dr. didn't want her opinion; afraid that she won't fill out the report properly was the reason. She and I have tackled many of the issues surrounding my weight. One checkbox will be complete on 05/30 (Psyche Eval) Second checkbox will be complete on 06/09 (6th month of nutrition counseling). Final checkbox will be the letter of medical necessity - supposedly to be sent by the surgeon. There really is no question on that issue; my BMI is over 55 and I have two co-morbidities (high blood pressure & obesity induced asthma). The timeline I've been told is that to anticipate a surgery date between July 20 & 31. I think I'll be holding my breath until I come out of recovery. :glare:

    1st Post op Visit

Today was my first visit with my surgeon post op. Good news is that I am down 14 pounds since surgery two weeks ago. Woo Hoo! Bad news, or not so good news is I dont feel very much restriction right now so the pureed food doesnt do much to satisfy me. The surgeon said my first fill will be Nov 8th! I cant wait. Then at least I will feel full when eating these small amounts. Other than that I am good. The itching is starting to subside more and more wiht my healing. I am noticing my clothes getting much looser. I tried a little tuna salad for lunch today. Just ate it from a little cup. It was good. :-) Anyone else have some good ideas for this pureed stage? Ive tried soups, refried beans, cottage cheese, yogurt, oatmeal, and now tuna salad. Have a great week everyone!

    Weights?

I had a little port pain after doing abdominals 4 weeks after surgery. My doctor just told me to take it easy another week or two and then I should be fine. I have no problems now. At 7 weeks out you should be just fine as long as you are using appropriate lifting technique and are not overdoing it. Just listen to your body. Start easy and if you are not sore the next day or so then you know you can pick up a little more. If you are careful and listen to how you feel, it is not likely that you will injure yourself.
