    Lap Band Removal

No insult taken bayougirlmrsc but I did not wait five years, I have been very compliant and have followed up with my surgeon every 6 months or more if there were any issues for the last 11 years. I have had constant issues with my band for the last 5 years. I have had so many fills and unfills that I can not even count. I presently have no Fluid in my band and have not for the last year and I am sill having issue with reflux which is damaging my esophagus and stomach. I do not think that the LB is horrible, however it is causing harm to my body at this point even with my compliance. My actually question was that the surgeon who placed my band left the area and it is the new surgeon that is suggesting the removal and revision. I was not sure if others have had their surgeons suggest the removal or if they asked the surgeon to remove it? I went in to see him for review of my recent blood test and he threw this at me and it actually shocked me. I am also nervous about jumping from one WLS to another. I still see the nutritionist, attend meetings, get regular blood work and mostly follow the LB diet. I do eat a lot of Soup because that seems to stay down, it is a probably a combination of it being warm and a liquid. But truthfully I am tired of vomiting all the time and having pain. I can drink a Protein shake and vomit or have 3 oz of grilled chicken and it will be fine. It is like my band has a mind of its own and there is no rhyme or reason to it We did talk about the sleeve however he does not recommend it due to the fact the band will leave scar tissue where he will need to cut for the sleeve and there is a high possibility that it will not close completely and cause a leak which is never good! Rachel I am so happy for you and glad that it went smoothly for you. Can I ask you how long you waited between your surgeries? Thank you all for the well wishes and same back to you

  4. I had my RNY in 2002 and lost 220 pounds...2006 was a stressful year because I got married, moved 1000 miles away from family at my husband's request...I started eating sweets again which is like a drug to me...by 2009 I had only gained back about 40 so I wasn't too worried about it...then my dad got sick and almost died and that threw me into a deep depression as we'll as denial about my slow weight regain...over the next 8 years I ended up weighing 388 (not my highest) and decided to look into a revision...the surgeon I am seeing is the third opinion I've gotten...he supposed to be one of the best revisionists in the country...I am more determined to make this revision work then I was for the original surgery...back then I was in denial that I could gain it back...I'm also active in therapy where my eating is a topic. I've also done a lot of research about the DS and am aware of the high complication rate but since there is not much on success with a distal revision I was aiming toward that...so I was looking here for possible successes to help me decide to stay with this surgeon or travel far distances to hopefully find one that will do the DS on me. Oh and I'm now down to 360 bmi 59.9 because I've completed one of three consecutive months in my supervised diet...a pre-op requirement. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

    Band vs Sleeve

I think by "user error" my surgeon meant compliance, that in his experience band people were less likely to follow the rules. But with any procedure we have to follow the rules to be successful. We all know that. @@laceemouse Yeah, I agree with that. I just see a lot of people who are forced to have revisions due to band complications through no fault of their own, and others insisting it didn't work because of their "user error". Product liability type of issue. Hehe Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

    Concerned

I wanted the sleeve in the beginning of this journey, but as I researched, and after my first consult with the surgeon, I told him about my long time reflux/ gerd problem. He,said " yes, many people get acid reflux worse, after the sleeve, AND he is,starting to see 4 to 5 years after the sleeve procedure the reflux is horrendous for many people and then they end up having a revision to RNY. So with that said, im not willing to chance this or,am I willing to do a revision. So its bypass for me. Also the bypass is the gold standard of WLS. But never the less, its all scary. Good luck in your decision. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App
  7. Not what I said at all... but hey, read what you like into it, we all seem to be doing that. I said people deserve second chances. I said not all doctors who perform them are unethical. I said I don't want to make anyone feel ashamed for having a revision. I said I found my place here on this board after I never thought I'd be fat again, so I can see how someone would have faltered. Let he who be without sin cast the first stone... everyone deserves a second chance... I did not say any of those things you think I said. Not my opinion... fact. This thread was started as a discussion about revision surgery, which we were having a nice civil one until you came along and decided to be the thread police and declare that we were shaming anyone who has a revision. There's always one who has to come in and claim everyone is shaming someone when we try to have a frank, honest discussion. But you're new here. I'll let it go. Thanks... I can feel the love.
  8. One M&M for a surgery done in Mexico isn't really what I think most people here are talking about. You say we have differing ideas about what is unethical, and we clearly do... I am not a surgeon, nor do I purport to know all the risks and benefits, but I do believe they are highly individualized and best left to those educated on the procedure. There will always be outliers. There will always be truly unethical practices. But it sounds like there is a very black and white line of thinking here and I don't want to make people who have had revisions feel like they need to hide it or that they have done something wrong. I know 2 people who have had successful revisions. One of them done by my surgeon. She is amazing (my surgeon)... I work with her. She's done so many of these procedures she has it down to a science. I take care of her patients and chose her for her lack of complications and experience. She is a lifesaver to many and anything but unethical. Wow, you seem to be reading a lot into these posts and being pretty judgmental ((and black and white) yourself... Google a few "medical tourism" WLS practices and a email/text them that you are seeking a revision. See how through of a history they take before taking your credit card number and scheduling you. BTW,where did I say that the surgery was done in Mexico? Um...nowhere. I am familiar with leaving the country for surgery as it's cheaper... you said something about doctors in Mexico... I am not here to debate this with you, or anyone else, I am here to SUPPORT people. The ONLY reason I said my piece was to try and say that we are all different and NOONE should be made to feel bad if they needed/had a revision. This is turning into a who's right and wrong. I'm out. You can have the win since it seems to mean so much to you...
  9. I have a decision to make that I hope some of you can help me with...I had RNY in 2002...I'm looking to get a revision...the surgeon I have seen will only revise me to a distal RNY...I am more interested in the DS...should I trust him or look for another surgeon...this type of revision is only done by a handful of surgeons in the USA due to it's complexity Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

Just got revision from sleeve to bypass!

I am only 5 months out from gastric sleeve. I go on Tuesday for revision to gastric bypass. I'm very nervous. I had surgery in the summer so I didn't have to miss work (I'm a teacher). Unfortunately, with an hourglass stricture and a pouch above it holding my food, I am throwing up undigested food. I'm freaking out about the recovery. I only plan to take a week off of work because I'm still a newer teacher without a lot of leave. The note my doctor gave me to bring in states 2-6 weeks. Ugh! I had no pain after sleeve. They said it should be a similar recovery. It wasn't for you guys? We need our own forum for sleeve to bypass!!!

  14. I had a band to bypass revision on October 4th. I'm happy with my progress. have had a couple of stalls which typically last just over a week so I'm used to them now. my weight loss definitely looks like a set of steps. I'm just short of 2 months post op now. I'm doing at least 10,000 steps every day with no exceptions. I am getting all my Protein in most days (still do about 1/2 Protein shake every day) and in the last week have been getting 80 oz of Water in most days (almost half is usually consumed in the evenings after dinner). I haven't found a food yet that doesn't work (steak is awesome) but i find it has to be freshly cooked, dryer leftover meat is pretty much a no go. I'm sticking to a pretty low carb diet which is i think a big contributor to my loss so far, which has been faster than I typically experience. hoping to be at my goal by summer, but we'll see what my body puts up with. I started as a size 18 and just wearing size 16 jeans today. looking forward to onderland when i should drop into a size 14 pant. already fitting into my size 14 dresses. I've been tracking so here are my stats: 2 week pre-op diet 16 lbs lost 1st month post-op just over 16 lbs lost 2nd month post-op likely to be 14 lbs lost that is a total of almost 46lbs as of today. pre-op 260, sw 244, current weight 214.6

    Help! Post-op pain control

I think it sounds extremely twisted for anyone to think that someone would go through major abdominal surgery just to get opioids. Seems a lot easier to feign back pain! But seriously, Stephens Johnson is no joke. You would have better luck talking to an actual surgeon. Unlike in the US, the representatives very often have zero medical background. Problem is that they want to see if you are a good candidate and make you fill out a questionnaire. My advice is to find a surgeon in Mexico with excellent English, fill out the health questionnaire and arrange a Skype interview where you can discuss your concerns. Won't cost you a cent. I used Dr. Fernando Garcia, and I hear that his English is very good (I only spoke to him in Spanish), and I'm using Dr Illan for my revision, and he and his partner Dr Ponce de leon also have excellent spoken English. Good Luck!

    Lap band back to basics

If you've moved so far that making an appointment at your surgery practice isn't feasible, you'll do well to connect with one where you live now. If it's been more than a year since you last had an appt, it's time. You should have an [annual] esophagram and discuss what your band is doing presently and whether adjustments are the way to go. You'll also get the full rundown on how to eat and the rest of the routine. I don't understand why your band was emptied instead of loosened. Are you leaving something -- e.g., dilation -- out? P.S. I was doing wonderfully well in the 15 months following surgery and then I blew it. A couple of times along the way, I reapplied myself (saw my NP, surgeon and RD) and lost about 20 lbs. Then I regained those bits. In July I went in again with the idea that my band would be a lost cause. (Much earlier I had dilation twice, which meant significant loosening.) I was wrong and am so relieved that I can forget about revision surgery. Get the proper professional assistance now and see where you get. I get the feeling from your account that one or more parties weren't particularly thorough from the start. Don't give up. I'm exhausted. Good night.

  22. We disagree on what is and isn't ethical. I had a morbidly and mortality yesterday. 357 lb 42 yo band to sleeve to bypass died in the ER. Seems to me that our south western boarder is teaming with doctors all to happy to "revise" anyone who has the cash. And NO, I am NOT saying that every, or even most, doctors in Mexico are unethical. 23. I was revised from LapBand to sleeve on 10/18 and so far, so good. Just went back to work yesterday and other than some fatigue, it's going well. I was released to exercise at my appointment on Monday so today was my first real attempt at a workout. Went really well-couldn't do anything that used my core because it hurt, but I did a 20 minute walk/run! Not too many food issues, only a problem with an overripe banana that made me feel like I was going to explode. I won't be using any bananas in a Protein shake for a while. I've had two stalls but I'm down 21 since surgery, 26 since pre op. I'm glad that I took measurements though. I've been measuring myself every two weeks so even when the scale is making me unhappy, the numbers balance it out. I've lost four inches from my hips and chest, two from my waist! In six short weeks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  24. I guess I view revisions for whatever reason to be at the discretion of the surgeon and patient. Everyone's story is different, but even if it is not "medically necessary", who am I to say another isn't worthy of a second chance? I am a nurse and have taken care of addicts of all nature and see the rate of recidivism/relapse. I know that it takes more than one round of treatment some times... yes, surgery is a major intervention and there are risks associated with it, but to say a surgeon is "unethical" for performing them as revisions is a bit judgemental, regardless of whether or not there is perceptible tone. Pray you never find yourself in a position where you have "eaten your way through" your surgery. We are all human and not infallible. I lost 115 lbs the "natural" way and kept it off for over 10 years. I NEVER thought I would gain that weight back. I thought my food issues were resolved. But here I am, typing this post on the bariatric pal thread. I gained all the weight back and then some. Went from 165 lbs to 362. I needed surgery to help with this. We all did, right? That's why we're here. I'm here to find support and offer it to others... if I had a revision and came here looking for support and was reading this, I think I'd cry. There are those that judge us because we had to have the surgery the first time... let's not do the same to someone who found themselves here twice.
