What Spiritual Books Have Helped You?

A Course in Weight Loss: 21 Spiritual Lessons for Surrendering Your Weight Forever by Marianne Williamson. She really dives a lot into the psychology of why we hold onto weight and puts it into a real healing perspective from a spiritual (meaning non religious) point of view.

    First step!

My husband thought it was another hair brain idea. I went to the seminar anyway . I came back very educated and very excited. He read the material I recieved very carefully .... and here I am his "new on the outside wife" off 10 pills and 2 shots of insulin a day. edie

Little to some, BIG DEAL to me

Lil sister this is a great NSV. I am so proud of you and your loss already. WOW you are rocking that sleeve SIS, Don't forget to get those pics on the gallery so we can see the skinny you in transformation. I am so psyched for you. You are doing great!!!!!! :whoo: :clap2:
  4. Looking for experienced lap Band to sleeve conversions. I had my Lap band removed 11/2015, Sleeved Sept 8,2016! I’ve lost maybe 1 pound or 2 lbs, since being home this week/ 8days post op. I’m starting to think-this sleeve will not be a rapid weight loss for folks like me who had a band for (2006-15!!), so WOW 9 years. My weightless was low, at 45 lbs, in the beginning , but I Know it kept me for gaining. Then once removed back to my original weight of 250. Do you Ex-banders have as much success as the other newbies? Thanks all! I’ve been creeping here for months, glad I finally signed in.

    First step!

I dreaded telling my husband because he would think the same way I did when I first contemplated this ...it just seemed so extreme, it doesn't now the more I educate myself about it and here all these success stories. He actually found out on his own when he got on our shared computer and kept seeing this web site narrowed down at the bottom. He laughes and doesn't think I'll actually go through with it and of course gave me the lecture about starting today ...eat right exercise etc. and I'll see in a few weeks I'll lose the weight....I kept my 10 year intense weight loss battle mostly to myself I guess. I felt like this last weight gain after a stellar 4 month effort of marathon training and healthy eating just did me in....it was the straw!!!!!

    Should I get surgery

You have very good reasons for having the surgery & questions & doubts about progressing are common. It’s surgery. It changes your digestive system. There is a period of healing & recovery. To be successful for the long term, you will have to make changes to how, what & why you eat & your relationship with food. The months post surgery give you time to work through all of this & certainly therapy, as @SleeverSk suggested, can be very helpful. The surgery also gives you time to develop better eating habits & routines like being more mindful. Will you forget & take a too big sip or bite or eat too quickly? Yes it will happen but your body soon tells you & you’re usually extra careful after the experience. Often all you’ll experience is just discomfort but occasionally foamies or vomiting. Complications after surgery aren’t common and many are related to pre existing conditions or predispositions. The risks are lower for bariatric surgeries than many other common surgeries. I used to control almost all my reflux with dietary choices before surgery (no spicy, fatty or rich food, little carbonation & reduced caffeine) which is why I had sleeve. I still have reflux but it is different & I need meds every day which I didn’t before. I hate taking tablets & often forget. Multi vitamins always make me nauseous but my bloods are good & I don’t need to take them anymore though some sleevers still do. Just depends on your diet & absorption for us. But it is a necessity after bypass as malabsorption of calories (& therefore nutrients) is how it contributes to your weight loss. Dumping can occur with bypass (about 40% chance I think) but if you discover you have it it is simply a matter of avoiding fats or sugars as they are the usual culprits. Some even find they can eat small amounts as time passes. You can also have it with a sleeve but it is less common (30%??). The average weight loss with sleeve & bypass is about the same 65% +/- of the weight you have to lose to put you in a healthier weight range. Some lose more some lose less. Make a list of your questions to discuss with your surgeon. They’re best placed to answer them in relation to your specific needs, health status/issues & weight loss/gain history. All the best whichever surgery you have.

    changes after lap band?

HI ChariTee, While I haven't had kidney stones, I have had fertility problems in the past, probably related to PCOS though never formally diagnosed. (My OB/GYN and I had this conversation a few years back - but since I'm done having children, it's a moot point) Anyhow, I can tell you about some health improvements I've experienced post banding. Due to my weight loss: Diabetes - I was taking two oral meds for type 2 diabetes, and my HA1C's (glycosated hemoglobin - measure of blood sugar control over time) were creeping up - last 7.1. I knew I'd have to start taking more meds soon, and probably insulin in the near future unless I lost weight. In just a couple months, I was longer taking ANY diabetes meds and last HA1C was 5.5 - NORMAL. Random blood sugars are NORMAL. Diabetes - gone! Blood pressure - I was taking a bp med that was a 'ARB" and a 'Water pill' I now take 1/2 a pill, and could probably be off completely as my BP's are normal, and sometimes even too low if I don't drink enough. sleep apnea - I can tell this is much improved. I still use my CPAP machine, but probably won't need it much longer. Fitness level - I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without feeling really winded. I avoided any exercise like the plague. I now walk 2 - 3 miles a day, and don't even feel tired. I can walk up 3 flights of stairs non-stop. I used to hate to shop - I'd park in the closest parking area, shop briefly, and have to sit down in the mall for awhile. I hated taking my girls shopping, and mostly bought clothes from catalogs/internet. Now, I look forward to walking, shopping, and being active! I feel SO MUCH healthier and happier. I've starting having periods again without taking progesterone - which I had needed to take for years or would never have a menstrual period. While this is ONE health improvement I could do without (LOL), it certainly is healthier! Now, you don't have to have a band to experience improved health - you just need to loose weight. For me, it took the band to be able to do that! It's been the most wonderful thing I've ever done for myself! I still have a long way to go, but my life has changed SO MUCH in the past months, I am so grateful to have been banded! LIfe is so much better now. Good luck with your journey.
  8. Thanks everyone. I worry about the protien the most due to the hair loss. I went through that once and NEVER want to do it again. My post op diet (as of yesterday) is 3 small meals (cream of wheat, yogurt, fat free pudding made w/sk milk or low fat stained creamed soups) and 3 each 3 oz protien shakes which include skim milk. I am no where close to eating a fraction of this. Anyone know of any good protien water mixes...I cannot get the Special K20 in my area. Thanks again for the advice. My mind is just going crazy worrying about all of this stuff!

    Angels for pre-bandsters

Believe it or not I had an angel who was a BYPASS person. She came and supported me - I met her on a local board for weight loss surgery - and not once did she tell me that I should have the orther surgery done. I completely support being an angel. I am actually going to be an angel for 2 people here in Milwaukee. One being my best friend's mom - who has always struggled with her weight and another is my boss's daughter who has said great things to her about how I I am looking. I totally support it so count me in!!!

    post-fill diet??

Hi, can anyone give me any advice on living with the heliogast band??? I have only had one adjustment, but finding that weight loss isn't happening!!!! Please can anyone help/advise me?? Justine
  11. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences. I feel better about my decision more and more when I hear success stories like yours. I have a lot of people that are ignorant that want to tell me that I am going to extremes here with the surgery. I too had to gain about 10lbs to make sure that I met the BMI requirement for my insurance to cover. (I probably didn't need to gain but 5 really, but I threw an extra 5 in there for good measure). However, I have not ever in my life been able to maintain a loss. I think people just think I am lazy for getting the surgery, when really I am probably one of the most determined individuals I that know. I have lost and gained my entire life and am ready for something to be more permament, I think the Lap-band will be my life-long aid. I am comfortable with the decision and have decided to dump this trainer. I can do this! I know I can! Thanks again everyone!

    Mirena Coil slow weight loss?

No evidence that Mirena causes slow weight loss.... my surgeon told me to leave it in, it wasn't a factor in my sleeve pre or post surgery. i think 42 lbs in 4 months is pretty good going, congratulations. So why the rush to lose weight faster? Most of us have taken years to gain the weight, so it's not all going to drop off within a few months (although that was always my dream, lol.) And once you lose it, now that you are sleeved, there's more chance it will stay off for good. Speak to your PCP about whether to replace Mirena or not, the acne etc. But think about why you feel your weight loss is too slow. Maybe cut yourself some slack, have you ever lost 2.5lbs every week for 4 months???? Good luck.

    Can't Break This Stall

Ok this is my story I was sleeved Jan 24,2013 I started out at 264,and i'm now 173,after a month stall,i just loss a pound, they say stalls would happen,i don't count my calories,i try to eat every two hour, because i'm only able to eat small amounts of food.if you are exercising that much make sure you are eating enough calories to burn off I only exercise three days a week, because I know my stomach can not hold that much food,so I don't have much to burn up,so be very mindful on that, after a month stall I was excited to see the scale move again,i only drink water no diet drinks, no fruit juices,no bread..no sweets, every now and than I may take a bite of something sweet, and than i'm happy, lol,, I know it gets hard, but hang in there, you will start losing again and take that scale and put it up,and take it out in three weeks again, don't do that to your self
  16. Hello and I am a college student who is looking to start working overseas in China or South Korea. I have been wanting to get gastric sleeve for about a year, and I have medical assistance that allows for me to have bariatric surgery. However I want to start working early 2017 and I want to do the surgery now but my insurance guidelines is for me to have weight loss program or nutrition counseling 6 months before the surgery. Is there a way where I can file an appeal to my insurance company and show proof that I will work next year abroad so can expedite the process for gastric sleeve surgery. Thank you so much for your input. Feel free to post anything.

Hi Rosa, Welcome to LBT! And welcome to your weight loss journey to a healthier happier you!
  18. Hi Everyone I am still considering wether I feel the band would work for me.:scared: The problem is I have a habit of working against things that are good for me, particularily with weight loss. It seems as though it is my way of rebelling against a world that has shunned me for being over weight but unfortunately it's only myself I am hurting in the process. I am concerned that I will find ways of cheating the band but at the same time I am wondering if this will give me the kick up the backside I need. Hmmmmmmm Did anyone else feel this way before having the band? X Katie

    Feeling Good

Sorry for highjacking your post with weather and body temp talk. Congrats on your weight loss so far!
  20. Welcome! First of all--take a deep breath and let it out slowly. All the concerns you mentioned are part of this. We have all asked those questions. When I first started seeking weight loss surgery I was irritated that the approval process and pre-op testing and such took so long. Now I am 11 days away from my surgery and am glad I had a lot of time to really ask all the questions and get answers. You don't have to have all the answers right now. Give yourself some time. Look around on this site--it is really helpful. Go to the consult--ask a lot of questions. In a little while you will know if this is right for you or not.

    Need help

After doing some initial research on my own about the various weight loss surgeries…I went to see my primary care physician who recommended the surgeon I used. Then, I called the surgeons office and they told me about an informational seminar about the procedure, which I went to, and I also made an appointment for the consultation with the surgeon…all in that one phone call. During the consult the doctor thought I would be a good candidate for lap band with plication. After the consult, his assistant went through the checklist of tests and such that were needed….and I began my journey! After all of my testing and insurance requirements were met I was given a surgery date! And here I am today…..7 months post surgery with lap band with plication…and I am 92 pounds lighter! Hope that helps you in some way! Good luck!

    Need help

You need to just call a weight loss surgeon in your area and set up an appointment. They will go over all of the different surgery options, pros and cons of each etc. I will go out on a limb and say that if you don't have insurance you might want to consider something other than the band due to the fact that the ongoing follow up visits would get very expensive.
  23. What your uncle did was horrible, and I hope surgery will be healing for you. Will you be in therapy during your weight loss process to help you cope with your new body and the new way it will force you to relate to the world? If it's something you can manage, it might not be a bad idea. Although I'm not a survivor of sexual abuse, I can relate to not knowing how to accept male attention. In fact street harassment is one of the few things I'm really worried about regarding life after weight loss. I get some now, but not as much as I know I'll get when I'm smaller, even though I live in a country where it's not as big a problem as others. Truthfully though, I'm not a particularly feminine woman. I wear dresses and skirts everyday now because they're comfy and stretchy and relatively flattering and fashionable, but once I drop down to a 12/14 I think I'll be presenting much more masculinely (get a short haircut, wear menswear inspired looks, etc). Not just to stave off street harassment, I genuinely am something of a tomboy, but I'm hoping a reduction in street harassment will be a bonus.

    how do I break a stall !!!!

You have to establish the correct intake balance and exercise balance to consistently loss weight and everyone's is different. I personally had to eat very high protein 80-90 gms consistently, around 100 gms of carbs and exercise 6 days a week doing cardio and weights 3 days a week. Ihad many stalls along the way and some lasted as long as 5 months but I never gained and sometimes I lost inches. I do measure and weigh my food and count calories but more important I monitor my protein intake and portions. Be patient we did not become obese overnight.
  25. This is a life time commitment, my friend from Queens (I'm presuming). Don't worry about anything just two weeks out. You won't lose every week, and you won't lose big numbers very often. It's the end number you need to think about. I've lost more than 145 lbs. and never lost more than 3 lbs. in a single week...and in fact, my typical losses per week were less than 2 lbs. Just stay the course, and the weight will drop. You know it and so do I. Good luck! PM me if you need to...if you are indeed from Queens, I'm just across the East River from you.
