  2. So my surgery is September 28th and today is the first day of my liquid diet. 3 shakes, 2 yogurts,SF Jello and Popsicles. I'm having a really bad day so far, I have the worst headache ever and I want to kill anybody that even looks at me.. Lol Can anybody else relate? Any tips or suggestions to make this better? I need encouragement badly!!! Thanks in advance Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. I bought the ninja so that it can do double duty of Soups and smoothies. That thing destroys, I put yogurt, Protein powder, ice, strawberries, spinach, and flax seeds and in about 5 seconds everything is liquified. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    When did you start purée?

Purees and other soft type proteins (eggs, yogurt, etc.) in the hospital and beyond for the first month. I ignored the pureed lettuce (ewwww..) they served there.
  5. NPR, Don't give up! I am 8 days post surgery and I am just now feeling better. Remember to keep hydrated. I used a medicine cup to keep sipping Water. My stomach pain was worsened by takingmedicine. Try a few tablespoon on applesauce or yogurt before you take your medicine. You may need to take a daily acid reducer, as well. I used a heating pad constantly and slept on my side. My doctor also prescribed an anxiety pill (Lorazepram) for me. It helped me to sleep. I also took hot baths to relax. I think you will feel better when you eat more. That made my weakness and back pain subside. Best of luck! kate3boys

    Now What?

Hayley, It really has been surprisingly easy for me. I don't know that I am the best to ask for eating advice, but I'll give you all the help I can. First off, I really have no idea what the size of my band is and how much I have in it. I can't remember if they've ever told me. So here is a typical day for me. I almost always have a Protein shake for Breakfast. Occasionally I will have an egg or greek yogurt. lunch is usually protein and maybe some fruit/veggies. I eat tuna and chicken salad a lot. Just about a 1/2 cup and then a little bit of fruit or veggies with that. If I get hungry I will snack on almonds or a Protein Bar. dinner is usually my biggest meal and I try to eat the same as my family, except smaller portions and I usually leave out the carb side dishes. However, I can eat a small portion, if I feel like it. It also depends on the day, as far as how much I eat and what I can eat without problems. There are some days I can eat a cup or more without any problems. Other days I get "stuck" after just a few bites. I try to eat slow and listen to my body when it's full. Does that help? I also exercise 3-4 days a week. Both moderate intensity cardio and resistance training. That helps!

    Now What?

If you're losing more weight than you want, maybe add in something healthy like nuts or, if you eat dairy, full-fat yogurt, etc. Congratulations on your daughter's wedding! Enjoy your gorgeous dress and the occasion....and knowing that you look fantastic.
  8. @@blu2020 I couldn't do milk of magnesia either, just the smell made me want to gag too. I took Miralax in powder form and added it to my yogurt etc. it literally has no taste Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Best foods to introduce first?

I lived on drinkable yogurt, Fage greek yogurt and premier Protein the first 2-3 weeks. When I moved to soft foods, I really enjoyed 1 or 2oz of salmon sashimi. It's so soft and flavorful and goes down comfortably. The ricotta bake is delicious - search for the recipe in the search bar on this site. Well-chewed cheese sticks are great too Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  10. How long is your pre liquid diet ? I start mine Sept 22nd. We should keep each other updates after surgery... Sent from my LGLS770 using the BariatricPal App We should! I have my pre-op appointment on sept 19th. I'm also starting in the 22nd! I've started testing and trying to find some broths and Protein powder and shakes that I like. So far the only thing I know for sure is that I HATE the GNC lean shakes; they like make me nauseous and the one I love with is Orgain is not going to have enough protein it only has 21g per 8 oz serving lol!! How about you ?? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I actually found Isopure at the Vitamin Shoppe it's like a Gatorade consistency. It has 40g of protein in one bottle. So I got the grape... It actually taste pretty good. So I added some Water to it to make it last longer and some mio grape drops taste like coolaid. I got icepop molds also I'm going to make my own popsicles out of the protein. I have a bunch of different Soups and yogurt shakes, cottage cheese is allowed on my liquid diet so I'll be using that as well. I did buy some shakes to change it up a bit. The eas strawberry Protein Shakes are good. Sent from my LGLS770 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Best foods to introduce first?

What does your surgeon recommend? Mine suggested mashed potatoes and ff gravy, Greek yogurt, refried beans... The potatoes were odd, but she had me use boxed, add protein' powder and I was only allowed 1-3 Tb per day with more gravy than potato.

    Second thoughts?

To be nervous is normal.. I had sleeve surgery on 9/1/16. After 8 months of going thru the process I questioned it all in the last week. It wasn't easy going thru the pre op diet for two weeks, but I got through it. I've added yogurt to my diet this last week and Sat I can have some pureed food. I've tolerated everything well, and basically was able to avoid pain meds day after surgery. As long as you are prepared you will do great! Good luck!

  14. I must say this journey has not been nearly as bad as I had anticipated. Other than a bit of discomfort the few days following surgery I cannot really complain at all. I know it has only been 3 months but I am not having a problem eating what I am supposed to and staying away from junk. My menu is pretty basic consisting of hard boiled eggs, chicken, greek yogurt, cottage cheese and some nuts and fruit and vegetables here and there. Had my 3 month blood work done and everything looks good so i assume I am taking enough Vitamins (with Flintstone as my multi). For all of those that are just embarking on your journey don't sweat it listen to your doctor and stick to the plan like most things in life I truly think it is mind over matter. Now for the good stuff. I am 6' 5" started this journey at 346.5 day of surgery after 1 week liquid diet 330 this morning scale says 276. Seventy pounds gone in 13 weeks, I think a few days of discomfort was well worth it!!! About 40 more to goal which I am confident I can work off by years end!!

    Pre-Op Weight Loss

Here was my 10 day fat man pre op diet. Two premier shakes, all of the sugar free jello I wanted, a green salad per day with lemon juice or vinegar for dressing, I could have grilled unseasoned chicken or white fish, at least a spoonful of Greek yogurt to promote good stomach bacteria. I mixed the yogurt with the lemon and it made a killer dressing for my chicken and green salad. I had it at work for a sense of normalcy and it worked well. I had headaches for the first 3 days but after that all was good. I went from 312 to 293 in 10 days.
  16. I haven't regained yet but I am sure headed that way if I don't get control again. In my head I have just been "testing the waters" and "learning how to eat like a normal person", but my therapist called me out last week saying that she felt I was relapsing. (I am definitely a food addict.) I was telling a friend at lunch about it today and how I thought the therapist wasn't being realistic. I said this as I ordered chocolate cheesecake for which I proceeded to eat half and not the "few bites" I said was going to take. Then I proceeded to tell her about the chocolate yogurt from Braums (with Reese's candy) on Friday and took my nephews to the candy store on Saturday and "just got a couple of truffles" and "had McDonalds breakfast" on Saturday. And all that was AFTER my therapist told me she sensed I was relapsing. So the good news is, that I said out loud to my friend "WOW, she was right!" so I have realized it. Now I just have to figure out how to get back on track. I am still making good choices too (getting in all my Protein, veggies, etc.) but obviously I am not on program. Part of my fear is getting too thin. I know that sounds kind of weird but I have realized my weight is a little lower than I wanted it to be but mostly I have lost muscle tone because I haven't exercised. I have my first round of plastics in one month (October 13) and I really intended to be "healthy" going in to this. I have got some work to do.... I guess I am not looking for advice. Just needed to type it out and confess it somewhere... So glad this is a safe place to do that.
  17. In addition to the above, I ate a lot of fat free refried Beans with a little cheese melted on top (and a little spice added). I also ate hummus (yes just with a spoon) and pimiento cheese. Oh and I also ate Laughing Cow cheese wedges. Also at that stage, I was still having at least 2 shakes per day (Premier Protein ready to drink shakes were super easy to carry). Oh and another thing - I would eat 1/2 a container of greek yogurt (Danon Light & Fit Greek Key Lime or strawberry Cheesecake were and still are my favorites) and mix it with 1/2 scoop of vanilla Protein powder to get higher protein. I would also do a container of sugar free fat free dark chocolate pudding snack with 1/2 scoop of chocolate protein powder. The protein powder I use is Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate it tastes great!

    Low carb not working

That's always a plus! If you want yogurt- try the Oikos Greek Triple zero. ImageUploadedByBariatricPal1473558455.382744.jpg I use the Danon Light and Fit- post op bypass here ImageUploadedByBariatricPal1473558622.248461.jpg And you don't need a whole container of you're eating with other things. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I'll try that, thank you Sent from my SM-J700T using the BariatricPal App
  19. Remember that anything you can crockpot, you can eat during the soft stage. Take left overs to work the next day. Sometimes you should strain the crockpot creation if it's too "lumpy" for your eating stage. How about tuna salad in a tomato---if you can have the tomato. Every plan is different... cottage cheese Soups greek yogurt pack of hot cereal---once again, if allowed egg salad/egg drop soup pate' I always thought that the soft stage was "fun" because it lets us use our imagination. Let it go! Think outside the box! Go for it!!!! Happy exploring.

    Soft food suggestions for work

I wasn't working during my soft food stage, but I ate a lot of Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, turkey, etc. You could also take things that you had during your liquid phases: soup, protein shakes, etc.

    Hunger

I get very hungry unless I continually graze on protein foods--cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese strings, etc.
  22. They reloaded the snack machine at my office, with THREE ROWS of jumbo honey buns. Am *SO* grateful for my sleeve and the loss of the cravings for that stuff. Part of my brain still responds, but the other part doesn't think that sounds as good as my key lime greek yogurt. LOL

I'm not a big fan of pumpkin spice, actually. LOL I'm waiting for Starbucks to put the Christmas menu out because I'm all about the peppermint mocha - though I'll have to see if they can make that skinny now. LOL.

HA! I am not a fan of pumpkin spice either. But I do love my yoga pants. And I hate honey buns. My youngest works at Panera after school and brings home pastries a few times a week. If I was a sweets lover, I'd change the locks.

Starbucks has a new Mexican hot chocolate with or without espresso that I can't wait to try.

  23. I do have to supplement with Protein Bars. The rest of my protein comes from meat, cheese, nuts, and yogurt. Back in my weight loss phase, my daily intake looked something like this: Breakfast: Protein Bar (~20 grams) Morning Snack: String Cheese (~8 grams) Lunch: Meat of some sort, usually leftovers (~16-20 grams) Afternoon Snack: Greek Yogurt (~12 grams) Dinner: Meat (~16-20 grams) Evening Snack: Protein Bar (~20 grams) For the "meat" mentioned above, it was always the protein portion of whatever my husband made for dinner (I was married back then). So if he made meatloaf and mashed potatoes, I just had meatloaf. Shrimp and Pasta, I had the shrimp. chicken and rice, I had the chicken. You get the idea. Awesome information, thanks JamieLogical!

  25. Hi everyone! Just wanted to share my story with you. I just turned 31 years old, have been big since my teens. Have a lot of weight and body image issues (thanks Mom) ????. At my heaviest, I was about 104kg or 229 lbs. I'm 5'5, have knee problems and polycystic ovaries, depression - the works. Managed to lose some weight by going to the gym and watching what I ate but I was yo-yo-ing between 97-95kg I was at 97kg (213 lbs) when I decided I didn't want to be big anymore. I did the Spatz gastric balloon first which didn't really work out for me, so 6 months with the balloon and I decided to go for a more permanent option. I was sleeved August 30, 2016, a month after removing the balloon, my weight at 92kg (202 lbs) I lost 2 kg after the balloon was removed which was pretty ironic ???? then I gained it back a week before surgery because my doctor told me I didn't need to do a pre-diet so I ate everything I thought I wasn't going to be able to eat post vsg. The first week was horrible because Soup and liquids are boring, but I wasn't throwing up like with the balloon, for which I was really grateful. It's my 2nd week today, my doctor gave me the go ahead last week to start eating soft food. Yogurts, soft cheeses, gradually moving on to steamed fish and chicken. I'm able to eat almost normal food now, but I stay away from red meat, carbs and sugar. I'm 86.6kg (190 lbs) now and I'm feeling quite happy. Although there are times when I kinda feel sad because I have to choose between Proteins and a donut, overall I think I made the right choice for my health and well being, not to mention my self-esteem. Thanks for reading, and I'll post progress pics once I find a pre-surgery full body of myself (I forgot to take one before the procedure)
